The Amazing Spider-Man |OT| This is How you Shot Web

Either something's up with my Xbox, or this game won't install correctly. For some reason, even though I've installed it, the drive spins.. HARD.. throughout play. Not just the normal couple of minutes like most games that are installed.

Anyone else notice this?

I had this problem with Dragons Dogma. I tried it on different systems and it would do the same.

But it is just swinging, why does it matter if it sticks to a building or the cloud? what possible advantage do you get from it sticking on a building? how does it make it better? and don't say because it's realistic because nothing about spider-man is realistic.

Im saying it anyway. Because its realistic.

I know. Teenager, bitten by radioactive spider, spends his life swinging through New York killing half lizards, octopus men, and business owners dressed as goblins. Thats not realistic at all. But the one key element of spidey that benefits from realism is the swinging. Each swing having its own momentum and physics to the point where you actually had to learn how to do it properly...its extremely satisfying. Even moreso when you start pulling off some crazy shit because of it. It makes for a better game.

Saying it just "sticks to a building" is an oversimplification of it. Theres so much more to it than where it sticks. It literally changes the entire feel of the game.

Am i the only one that doesn't get annoyed by cloud-swinging? i keep hearing everyone complain about it but does it REALLY matter? would it make the game leaps and bounds better with it? its just swinging :-/

Doesn't bother me since he's been doing it in comics and stuff for years. Would it be nice to have SM2 web swinging? Sure, but it isn't a deal breaker to me.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
It doesn't respect the limitations of the character and it doesn't make for an engaging, believable relationship with the environment (momentum and physics don't matter). Really if this is about the fantasy of being spiderman the experience of swinging through the city should be absolutely the primary thing to get right before anything else. And if it's not about that then it's just a generic cash-in action game.

I agree with this guy. Well said.

Of course we've been saying it for years.

I will try the game if it lands in a redbox. Otherwise it's a pass. I won't pay a dev who ignores swinging in a SM game. If I rent it and the game seems to justify the money, maybe I will buy it. But everything else would have to be pretty damn good, and I'd still be quite annoyed about cloud swinging. That shit just aggravates me. We have been so vocal for so long, and they just continue to ignore us.

With this "cloud swinging".... you can't really climb to the highest building and then just swing off that, can you? really???

From what I've seen of the gameplay and listening to the devs, it's a hybrid system. The game fudges it when you're going between buildings, but when Peter goes beyond the buildings (say over the park), he can't swing off the clouds.

Some one with the game could probably describe better than that.

It's the core mechanic of the character. For example, I'd liken cloud-swinging to if they gave Marcus Fenix "auto-aim". He didn't have to actually point the gun at the bad guy, he could just squeeze the trigger, no matter where the gun is aimed, and the enemy would fall down.

It's just more of the dumbification, "win button" mentality of many video game developers, making it so that there's no reward for taking time, learning and getting GOOD at the game, as long as any 9-year-old can just walk up and win.

I still bought the game, and I'm having fun with it. I'd have MORE fun with it if I was rewarded for understanding the physics and practicing. As of now, my locomotion skill can never get better, and THAT was what made Spider-Man 2 so rewarding for me as a player.

Ugh. That sucks. Soul Calibur V had this issue (dunno if patched out) where the disc never stopped spinning if you return to the main menu. Terribly annoying and a game-killer since I install everything, and that defeats the point. Someone mentioned Dragon's Dogma but that one worked normally after a long initial spin. I'm also curious if others see this issue, but judging from SCV a lot of people don't notice/care.

As with any case of preorder DLC, I just wish to know whether the three retailer exclusives will see a wider release on digital platforms... especially given how much is added via the Stan Lee content.

The Web Rush system actually looks pretty interesting. Like a Spiderman version of Assassin's Creed free running. You still appear to aim where you want to go, etc. you just have web rush to get between everything.

I can't read the details of the ign review from where I am, what didn't they like about it? I've played about 4 hours and would give it like an 8.5

they liked it overall but said the boss fights were lame and the visuals were "flat"

Fair enough, those things are not so great. Pretty much every character except spiderman looks terrible. The boss fights look cool but they are more flash than substance.

I'm not a stickler for cloud swinging, but it's so true. In SM2, you had to thing before you would swing and it gave the swinging a special feel. It was a game unto itself.

Gamespot review is up, I watched the video review and its similar to IGN's. Gamespot gave a 7.5, has some issues but it's a really fun game.

These reviews are enough for me to dive in.

Wait, wait, wait.. you're saying they made a comic book about Spider-Man? Oh, thank god you were here, citizen. I'll have to look these up. Are they popular?

...

My mistake.. I thought you were wanting to have a conversation involving the exchange of ideas on the topic. Had I known you were just blasting people whose opinions on this specific instance are different than your own, I wouldn't have taken the bait.

cool story bro.

You people bitch like little girls because it's cloud swinging then try to say it's a core mechanic OF THE CHARACTER yet that character cloud swings in the comics, come back when you have an actual reasonable reason to dislike cloud swinging and i want a logical reason that hinders the game, that makes the game unplayable because you can't.

You people and your nostalgia glasses are stuck in the past over some mediocre spider-man 2 game that frankly wasn't even THAT good, the story was rubbish and the combat? wasn't that great. Ultimate Spider-Man was a far superior game.

I like both web swing styles..

On one hand, making it simpler means my daughter can play the game. It also makes the game theoretically less reliant on those speed swing challenges where a single screw up can be frustrating.

It was fun accelerating and all that stuff with the other play style, and it was a little more challenging. I'm guessing it was a conscious decision to make the game more accessible to everyone.

Anyways, love the Rhino challenge, shame it's not longer.. currently ranked 9th I think.

Web slinging to traverse the environment is definitely one of the core mechanics of Spidey. It doesn't matter if he cloud swings in a forty year old comic book... after the web swinging system in Spider-Man 2, we all know going back to the far inferior version of weightless cloud-swinging is just a regression in the gameplay mechanics. Giving the player that sense of true, physics-based swinging momentum as Spider-Man is one of the few "exclusive" feelings you can get from a video game version of Spider-Man that you can't experience from a comic book or movie. Nobody is out of line when they bitch about how awful it is that we haven't seen a similar swing mechanic in a Spidey game in 8 years

the only thing good about sm2 was the swinging, almost everything else was bad but the swinging was SO good that it made a lot if people not give a fuck about the bad because the swinging was so much fun.
you say that you want a logical reason why cloud swinging hinders the game that makes it unplayable? nobody says that cloud swinging makes it unplayable we just don't want to play that game, we want the game to include a mechanic that was in around 3 of 4 open world spidey games, perfected in sm2 that is incredibly fun and satisfying.
here's a post that explains why

Who gives a shit what's in the comics? :| Comics don't have gameplay you need to worry about. The undeniable FACT is that cloud-swinging is vastly inferior to how Spider-Man 2 does it. Sure, the swinging can be decent without it (but ultimately boring since it requires too little input from the gamer), but SM2 has shown the way on how to do webslinging. That a game ~10 years later can't at least copy-paste the same system (let alone improve on it) is a shame.

They really should have released a demo. I'm still interested, but not quite enough to pay full price given the reception thus far. But if a demo was released and I liked it, I would probably buy the game immediately.

Oh well, Activision's loss. Guess I could hunt down a Redbox that actually has the PS3 version...

I want to know how the swinging is, since that's a dealbreaker for me.

Is it true there's no gravity or momentum? :(

Comparing it to Spider-Man 2's swinging, it's inferior. That doesn't mean you should skip the game altogether. The web swinging is still done quite well. The Web Rush mechanic also helps for faster travelling as well. Everything else is much more polished (combat, missions, etc.) compared to previous Spider-Man games.

If you're not sure, a least give it a rental.

must resist buying it on PSN...

wish I could rent it but damn Redbox only got the 360 and Wii versions :| (have two free game rental codes)

wonder why there is no full game trial for PS+ or even a demo

...for those that are going to try Web of Shadows, make sure you get the 360 version. the PS3 rev never got a critical patch that fixed a lot of bugs. Don't know about the PC version, but the 360 was the lead sku.

Going to have to pick up Amazing, looks like fun.

Okay! Impressions of the DS version, since Activision doesn't feel it's worth talking about!

If you liked Web of Shadows DS and especially Shattered Dimensions DS, then you should probably think about getting this. Despite changing developers, ASM DS is really, really similar. The only thing that's different from the outset (I've only played the intro level) is that enemies and Spidey himself are 2D spites, rather than 3D models from the other two games.

No combat moves unlocked, but you can uppercut a dude in the air, and juggle him, you have a regular combo move, and a slide attack. The levels are 3D and are big and open like Web of Shadows and SD on the DS.

The only thing I can say negatively about it, is that the artstyle they have for portraits when characters are talking is pretty horrible. It's KINDA like they tried to make characters from the Spectacular Spidey cartoon show, but failed misreably. Can't say much about the sound, because I had to play it silently.

Will play more tonight, but so far, I'm happy I bought it!

After playing it for a couple hours, I kind of like Web Rush. If you want a proper web swinging game, the game is probably not for you, but the web rush does make a lot of things more convenient and it just straight up looks better than anything you could do manually.

Also, I found releasing the web swing and hitting it again makes it seem like I'm going higher/faster rather than holding it down, but I might be insane. Animation's a lot better than I thought. Most the citizen models don't look great, but man, Spidey's suit looks fantastic.

For people who don't like the new movie suit, and I don't consider this a spoiler given how obvious it is, you unlock the classic suit almost immediately

Do you unlock upgrades that make the swinging faster?
The swinging isnt terrible in this but not as good as I hoped for. Speed will help.

Im having fun so far though.

"Classic Suit"
, you guys are talking about the
Raimi Movie Spidey Suit
, correct?

Are there any websites out there that have reviewed a copy for the PS3 or have written anything about the Move controls? I'm not a motion-control nut, but I got a Move bundle for free this week and wouldn't mind playing around with it if it's done well.

EDIT: Whoops. You guys answered my question while I was typing this! Disregard that first question!
