PS2 SHORTAGE EXPLAINED: IT'S THE SUEZ CRISIS
Russian transport planes conscripted to parachute in emergency PS2s
12:57 The shortage of the new slimline version of the PS2 in the UK and Europe has been explained, as SCEE boss David Reeves finally came clean to respected UK trade mag MCV.
In this week's MCV cover story, Reeves acknowledged the problems with the current level of Sony's PS2 stock but stressed that it was due to events entirely beyond the Japanese giant's control.
"A number of factors have led to the this situation," said Reeves. "The Suez Canal was closed for two weeks, with 104 boats on it. We were number 67 in the queue." :lol
Although the UK and Ireland are suffering the most, virtually every European territory has apparently been hit by shortages of the new model as gamers snap it up. Reeves went on to explain that although Sony is making every effort to meet demand by diverting stock from other territories, it faces a number of legal hurdles as it is not allowed to re-label stock from other territories for distribution over here.
In fact, the situation has become so acute that Sony has drafted in massive Russian Antanov transport planes to airfreight in fresh supplies from Middle Eastern and Eastern European countries, to satiate an ever-hungry public.
So now you know, but at least it looks like Sony is making every effort to ensure that if you want a PS2 this Christmas, you'll get it.
