The Black Culture Thread |OT X| Thread's Up, Don't Lurk

So, thoughts on what I have for a UI so far? The contextual stuff (weapon "blueprints" etc) is mostly placeholder. The red / green overlays represent default HDTV safezones.

with H5G screen overlaid
standalone

In the center of the health bar there's a compass which doubly highlights the direction of objectives, waypoints and teammates.

I feel obligated to explain the weirdness with the grenade setup: rather than have a set location for each grenade type and a headcount for each, the grenades have a "queue" where you can carry up to five total, but there's no restriction on total per grenade type. You can still cycle through them the way you would Halo's grenades, but in this case you could have 5 Supras, 3 Soulwaves and 2 Bloodlines, and so on. There are five different grenade types.

What's the number in the middle of the shield/health bars?

I assume the direction above it is the direction you're facing?

No minimap? (not necessarily a bad thing, but it depends on whether the game is designed around having one)

Does the grenade selection stuff collapse when not choosing one?

The central number is your health sum in points. By default you have 200 shield / 200 health. Because of the way the shield bar area is set up, when you're coming around to a cardinal direction or a midpoint (NE, in this case) it'll relocate to above the health value as you're looking around. After a certain point it goes back onto the actual compass thing.

The HUD in general still has a lot that needs to be added, but I'm not planning on including a minimap. It'll be balanced accordingly.

The upper "CRAFT WITH DPAD" stuff would have a toggle for collapsing / expanding in the control options, but the actual grenade queue would still stay up. I could mess with the opacities to make it less obtrusive when you're not selecting a grenade type, though.

A lot of this is nitpicky but I dabbled in this stuff in college so I'm going to keep it fresh and use some of it ;)

Is the actual number of your health actually important? Do guns do set damage that is widely available to the players? Like, would the number be able to more clearly tell you "I can only survive one more rocket/grenade" more clearly than just a bar would? If not, I don't think it's necessary.

I see better how the compass works now, I think that's cool.

I think it would be great to have the grenade selection stuff collapse/fade when not actively using it. It looks pretty slick for a menu, but I dunno if it's something I'd want to have open all the time (plus that's screen space that could be used to look for things to shoot :p). The important thing to me, when it comes to using that menu, is that it responds quickly and gets the information I need across to me quickly and clearly - very few bells and whistles, clearly and uniquely identifying which grenade you're selecting/have selected, etc.

Essentially, personally, I'm of the mind that the only information I want is stuff that is absolutely necessary.

now that Empire came through and crushed the buildings, should ABC move Blackish?

We need to go back five and four years, respectively, to find the last black comedy on the Big 4, Fox’s Brothers in fall 2009, and the last drama with black main cast, NBC Undercovers in fall 2010. (Undercovers had two black leads, for a true black ensemble drama we have to go back far further, to 2000’s City of Angels.) All were swiftly cancelled.

The most recent successful black comedy on the major broadcast networks was ABC’s 2001 sitcom My Wife & Kids while I can’t think of a single black drama that has done well on broadcast TV.

This season were have one of each, Fox drama Empire and ABC comedy Black-ish. Ironically, as rare as it is having two black broadcast shows the same season, Black-ish and Empire also air against each other.

The new competition has taken a toll on Black-ish. While remaining the season’s No.1 new comedy with the best Modern Family retention in 5 years, Black-ish was the only ABC Wednesday comedy to post declines when returning from holiday hiatus on Jan. 7. That’s when it faced the highly-rated premiere of Empire on Fox. Black-ish matched its lowest result in 18-49 (Live+ same day) that night. Last Wednesday, when Empire grew in Week 2, Black-ish slipped to a new 18-49 low in L+SD, 1.9.

Empire clearly is impacting Black-ish, it would be impossible not to as their audiences clearly overlap. Dramas, like Empire, carry a stronger sense of urgency to view, which explains why the Fox soap is drawing audience away from Black-ish. Comedies in general don’t command the same urgency, so we will need to wait for DVR data to see if Black-ish viewers simply postponed watching their show to tune in to Empire or permanently migrated to the drama.

Either way, ABC may want to explore swapping the Anthony Anderson sitcom and The Goldbergs, which, for the last two weeks, as Black-ish was being dinged by Empire, outrated Black-ish despite its stronger lead-in from Modern Family. The sophomore family comedy is doing nicely at 8:30 PM, regularly building onto its Middle lead-in, so there is an element of don’t fix it if ain’t broke. But if Empire continues to be as strong and Black-ish continues to slide, a switch may be an option.

It is safe to say that a comedy about a 1970s Jewish family will not have such a big viewership overlap with a contemporary hip-hop black family soap.

Did my black duty by not ordering the Selma tickets online and it was sold out.

Quick thinking got me and the family into Paddington. A really good movie I have no problems recommending for parents, families or just regular single dudes.

A surprise hit. Great story, good acting.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
So I went back to to see if the vibe of the early threads felt different than what we have going on nowadays. Felt the same. Niggas been talking about hot girls, porn and other such effects since day one.

it was a different time then. the streets have obviously changed

Shitting on civil rights to try to make a bad analogy really should be bannable

I'll keep the minimalist stuff in mind, thanks. Regarding the health value, yeah, the numbers behind it are actually pretty important higher up the skill curve. You don't make enemies bleed numbers like in Borderlands or Destiny, but holographic "cuecards" illustrate the damage values in-game and they're available for view / study outside of matches. For example, the starting pistol does 100 damage per shot, so it's a four-shot kill, while the rocket launcher deals between 200 to 300 points in splash damage or 350 on direct hits. Once you start getting familiar with all the point values, it becomes a lot easier to assess engagements based on what weapons they're carrying, etc.

Yeah, I'm cool with the number being there then.

I'm not sure we should alter the tone of our conversations based on what potential lurkers think. The thread hasn't (in the time that I've lurked/posted here) jumped down anyone's throat who wasn't a) being stupid or b) Jandro. Every time someone has come with a serious question/topic, it gets discussed.
Then we make horse jokes.
Well except that one time in OT8(?) where we got shut down for a night

judging by the hurt up and down my timeline, i guess Light Girls premiered tonight. did anybody watch it?

Watching it now. It's not very good. Lots of jumping around and surface level insights with nuggets of truth here and there.

Also, a lot of these commentators aren't light. They're brown skin but the film crew is shining bright ass lights in their face.

Watched it a few days ago and I have no idea what I watched or how I feel about it

As soon as we got out my roommate straight up said he hated that shit lol
Gonna assume the overall message had to do with the end of the flower child/hippie movement and the overall resentment it was starting to have on the population

I'd be happy to help with production / mastering, I already do a podcast that covers Halo stuff roughly every other month or so

The BCT Got Gamecast

feat.
MWS Natural - The leader
Trey - The lancer
Fyre - The smart guy
Imm0rt4l - The big guy
Royalan - The chick
Sub - The one I can relate to
i hope you guys go through with it. i'd love to hear it.
Not apparent to the lurkers, IMO. Look at how many people post once and never show up again.

In fact, I just ask. If you are lurking and see this post, shoot me a pm as to why you don't hop in the discussion. Or you can post it in the thread if you feel like it.
well for me, one of the reasons why i'm a bit reluctant join into the more serious stuff is i'm new, so i don't i think i should just jump in throwing my weight around like i own the place.

and the main reason is. i have a real problem being able to to articulate anything i want to say, and i'm afraid people will misunderstand my point.
it's a very isolating feeling because i never feel like can ever add anything of substance to a conversion.

it's one of the main reasons i lurked gaf for seven and a half years before making an account.
and is why i keep to myself and don't have any friends.

there's also a couple more reasons that are even more embarrassing ( if you can imagine that )

i saw selma earlier tonight.
bloody amazing film.
