There is a strong contingent in the Black Church that is deeply conservative, socially conservative. Deeply authoritarian. Homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, and ultimately anti-black. Consider how many churches are against women preachers. How many look the other way when children are abused, when affairs are rampant. The Pastor and the First Lady wear the finest and drive the flashiest, and members of the congregation struggle to eat and dress decent for Sunday service. And you wonder why Darrell Scott and his contingent have been supporting Trump? Why Martin Luther King III went to Trump Tower? Why Kim Burrell spewed hate and Shirley Caesar backed her up? And why Tina Campbell said this nonsense?
But what are you going to do? The Black Church is power in the black community, if not the power in the black community. Some places have the FOI, but I know nothing about their power structure and if they are plagued with the same problems (I have my theories, but I don't want to talk about what I don't know). We depend, almost too much, on leaders.
