yea, the difference is probably pretty negligible actually, point still stands though since whitaker had to darken up significantly. Saying he was in blackface is to say that his oscar is predicated on him selling out, shucking and jiving and what have you. The implication that it's wrong to darken your skin up for a part in a movie doesn't sit well with me at all. That's the whole point of make up. That isn't to say that casting shouldn't take skin tone of the actor in consideration, they clearly should. But what happens when the best actor for the job is a few shades to light?
Cop Out. Whitaker is much lighter than in that pic, the amount of shades in the transformation is pretty damned comparable to Zoe to her Nina look. Hell, Zoe Saldana is naturally darker than Will Smith.
I was referring more to Will's celebrity level. If Will was hired for a role like that, it wouldn't be for his acting abilities or his looking the part (similar to Zoe and this film).
You are right that the situation is comparable in regards to make up usage, but honestly how many darker skinned actors can you name that would have done a better job than Forrest Whitaker with that role? And can you honestly say the situation is the same for Zoe and the role for this film?

ok, but that has no barring on what I was saying, and I agree that Whitaker was great for the part(hence the example). What doesn't sit well with me is that you're saying he is in blackface. That word shouldn't be thrown out so haphazardly. There are connotations that come with that term that is still relevant today. You said that blackface today isn't quite what it was back during the minstrel era, that it isn't necessarily just used for lampooning blacks. I'd argue that blackface today is something more along the lines of that racist holiday zwart piet.
equating this
to this(a black woman making her skin darker for a part)
is disingenuous. And it only undermines the bullshit blacks had to put up with decades ago when we were being made fun of. Blackface is some seriously offensive shit. What's offensive about Zoe Saldana is that she was casted because Hollywood doesn't care for dark skinned black women which is racist/colorist but that is a whole nother story, which I'm sure you and I will agree on (it's some bullshit).
yea to look like Nina. Realistically they should have never casted her ass to begin with and gone with a talented dark skinned woman who'd likely closer resemble Nina.
The definition of blackface has changed with the times, and includes the mere application of darkening applicants and prosthetics to achieve black features. It's not exclusive to Al Jolson levels of shoe polish and red paint. There's also brownface and yellowface now...

Not saying her ass should have been casted to begin with. But saying a black woman cannot make her skins a few shades darker for a film role makes no kinda sense.
Maybe this has been addressed, but why in the hell is Viola Davis not playing Nina Simone? That would've been my first call. (Zoe would have been right before Eva Mendes.) Edit: I see that I'm waayyy late, but if everyone is seeing it why can't the creators?

I think it has to do with looks / whitewashing depictions of black people as much as possible in order to draw in more of an audience. Hollywood and colorism
hey... i don't actually see anything wrong with Zoe using makeup and prosthetic parts for a role... i was just imagining out loud about how AWESOME the reactions in a thread about those pics would be.

In NONE of these threads are people lampooning black people or using black face in the traditional 1800s minstrel show definition. I know what the term black face is supposed to mean and the history behind it. But the rest of the world uses it in a different context now and so I'm using it in that context. I understand if that context isn't traditionally correct, but that's an argument for another time.
Also, not every usage of black face in those times was for the sole purpose of lampooning black people vs shows refusing to hire black actors and instead casting white ones. That practice was also offensive, and this is why I have a problem with Zoe because even though she is black, she has less "African" features than many other black actresses that could have fit the role and IMO the film makers are doing a "milder" version of the practice I just mentioned of excluding black actors.

You REALLY need to look at those Nina Simone pictures and compare them to photos of Zoe Saldana. They didn't just make her skin darker. They gave her a bigger nose, they changed the color of her lips, and she's wearing a wig. IGNORING the fact that Zwarte Piet is considered a discriminatory holiday and ONLY looking at the make-up, how is the guy in the Zwarte Piet picture you posted doing anything different than Zoe?
But I do want to be clear that I don't automatically attribute black face/face make up to discrimination/trying to be offensive. I mentioned Cloud Atlas a few times already, that movie is filled with people wearing make up and fake noses to play different ethnic groups (Halle dresses up as at least two different ethnic groups in the film). The film also got a lot of heat for white actors portraying Koreans in "yellow face".
I don't find the usage of "face" in that film a problem and think it's acceptable because in the film they are trying to tell a story about
reincarnation/people from different eras coming back to life as different people.
I don't find Zoe's usage acceptable because there were other black actors who look more like Nina Simone that could have been put in the role. What the MANAA members in that article I linked are complaining about (more Korean men being cast for the Korean male roles played by white actors) is exactly why I have a problem with Zoe's role in the film. But unlike Cloud Atlas, there is no story reason for casting Zoe. And unlike the Forrest Whittaker example, she's not the best actor for the role.
Anyone seen the interracial porn video on wshh? Camera guy is interviewing a girl and asks her about black guys. Straight away she blurts out NO and says how her mum would disown her if she did it.
So she gets blindfolded and thinks she's blonde dick. Black guy comes in and after 20 mins of love she takes it off. Well, I'll let you guys see the reaction lol.
This is something I always wondered with people that are so strongly against sex with black people. If it just happened somehow, what would their immediate reaction be.

I've not seen the video but there is very little chance it's not staged, just like all the casting couch videos. There is no way the girl doesn't know what is going down. The closest I think you would come to that in reality is the traditionally anti-black girl who secretly wants to be fucked by a BBC. Scenarios like that or the casting couch videos are enjoyable when browsing porn, I just don't ever put much real thought into them because they are all carefully crafted things built to stimulate our male fantasies.

Dude you're being obtuse as hell. Dealing in absolutes won't help your argument either. There is nothing wrong with zoe saldana darkening up her skin. Nothin wrong with forrest whitaker making his skin darker for the last king of scottland. PERIOD. You say it doesn't get a pass. YES IT DOES.
There are clear differences between Forest Whitaker darkening his skin for that role, Zoe in this scenario, and random white kids being ignorant on camera.
This reminds me of the time I broke it to my friend that bangbus was staged, for him It was like finding out santa was actually your mom that's leaving the gifts on christmas

I wasn't trying to be obtuse, but obviously this argument isn't going anywhere/neither of us is going to budge from our view on Zoe's make up, so let's just agree to disagree and keep the topic moving.
look. this would be so much easier if yall would stop beating around the bush w/ all this blackface bullshit and just said "i just dont like zoe" or "i really dont think she's a good actress"
You should definitely stick with Morrigan. You do the down, down + 2 buttons super to get her clone super and you spam fireballs. Throw in Doom with Hidden Missile assist and you can lock people down.
I have a confession to make. I suck at fighting games. I have the worst memory ever which makes remembering combos impossible. I've only ever been good at Soul Caliber and only for the Dreamcast for some reason. Taki ruining fools.

I would play doom, but hes too high execution for me. You have to know how to triangle jump and his combos all require you to be able to consistently dash down forward. I just cant.

I've spelled out exactly why I had a problem with Zoe in the role for multiple posts already. No need to put words into my posts that don't belong because you don't want to address the bigger Hollywood issue (or don't want to read). You could have put Halle or any other lighter skinned black actress in Zoe's place and my response would have been the same to the make up.

Pretty much, it's like racist cuckolding. Interracial porn that plays up the different races is a specific type of smut for a specific type of viewer; for them it's part porno, part horror flick.
"BEHOLD! The TERROR of Black Cock!
CRINGE (and CUM)! As women are RUINED for MARRIAGE!
And MARVEL at the Jungle Bunny, in her natural urban habitat!
Coming soon, on [pay site with a fetish-specific name/horrible pun-based name]!"
Me too, although grapplers don't really work well for me in Marvel 3; that's one reason why I'm not all that crazy about the game. I'm trying to get into it, though, if only because my friends play it all the time.
