I can't handle animal discussions. I was born poor as fuck in the middle of the projects, and animals simply weren't a big part of this culture or area. Growing up, I've had white friends come to me crying because their dog or cat died, and I had no idea how to respond since to me, it's just a damned animal. I have absolutely no compassion for those types of situations. All I can do is dish out a generic "I'm sorry for your loss," but if they push for consoling, I'm left dumbfounded.
I had a friend in middle school whose family dropped thousands on a procedure that MIGHT prolong the cat's situation by a few months. It ended up dying a week or two after.
My dad always told me stories about his family taking their pets "for a ride" (ie. taken to get put down) when they act up or are in need of medical help. Animals don't mean shit in my family. IF I had a pet, and there's little chance that I would, and a vet told me that it's in need of expensive medication or an expensive procedure, then I'm sorry, but dude's being put down. No questions.
