Slayvenous thoughts start pouring in
You know, that's a good question...Decided to ask the deeper question here instead of over there...
Why is it that black women are so highly educated while black men are not?

Black girls in general are encouraged to have an attitude of self empowerment, so there is no negative forces discouraging them from pursuing academics.
Black boys (mainly amongst their peers) are encouraged to focus their attention in other directions (sports and other masculine endeavours) while school work is seen as soft.
How many of us graduate high school, much less college?

This pretty much.
Going along, and I don't really have statistics to back this up, but in a lot of black families, athleticism is promoted in boys almost more than education. In my family, and in a lot of my friends' families, it was generally acceptable for the girls to be primarily focused on their studies. This was definitely the case for my younger sisters. But when I got a certain age, I was given a choice: basketball or martial arts. My parents meant well and definitely wanted what was best for me, but it was never seen as acceptable for me to only want to focus on my studies in the same way my sisters were able to.

the educational system isn't built for black males to succeed anyway. but that's another tangent...

Of course, I'm wondering why that is.
Interesting. My brothers all played sports, but my parents expected us all to focus on our studies more. Extracurricular things were secondary. I was never the sports type - I always *did* want to learn a martial art, though
But if that's the case, isn't that tacit admission that the problem with black men and schooling is the fault of the negative parts of the black culture?
That's one of the reasons that racism is an overarching societal problem rather than one that only those directly affected should have to worry about. A lot of negative (external) influences and stereotypes can lead to internalized attitudes and become self-realizing over time when coupled with factors already making education less accessible for minorities. They face stereotype threat from both sides.
