The Black Culture Thread |OT7| Luigi took our stare

Question, and not a stealth criticism but a genuine question.

Why does Giant Bomb have an official GAF OT? In fact, a lot of the things that site does seems to get promoted on GAF. Is there some connection I'm not aware of?

And let me catch up on this controversy.

People like Giant Bomb a lot here. That's pretty much all there is to it. It's based on personalities more so than other gaming sites.

I like Jeff's opinions just because he's been in the industry for awhile and I think attended every E3 ever or some shit? Vinny is kind of funny in a off beat way and Patrick is pretty grounded in discussions.

Other then that....ehhh

I like Jeff and Vinny and Ryan (RIP). I'd say they have personalities; I mean you can hate them for a variety of things but you gotta at least respect Jeff and what he went through in order to set up Giantbomb.

The stuff Giant Bomb does is pretty good. Talented dudes, and their podcasts/liveshows are hilarious. They're also one of the few sites that do the premium thing so well, because they actually have content worth the purchase.

Jeff, Vinny, Patrick are super smart dudes. Ryan was too before his passing.

I like hearing Jeff because he's the most ratchet gaming journalist I can think of.
I like Vinny because I think he's legitimately a likable person.

I respect Jeff and Patrick. I literally don't have any dealings with the rest.

Question for you all, have you had people ask you to be their ally in social issues?

Damn @ EmCee's last post in that Giant Bomb thread

I shouldn't be surprised considering the shit that gets in other threads but seeing is summarized like that will hopefully put things in perspective for posters.
Mods and other posters have been dropping that kind of truth in threads for a while now. Fact is most of these folk don't see why their posts are so problematic. They think they're completely in the right. Nothing will change.

...No. But I've been part of humanitarian groups for a while now, so outside of the usual stuff within those groups, I can't say that I've been asked.

Yes. Gay is The New Black.

You're a black guy. Understand my struggle. We're like, totally the same.

I'm already inclined to be an ally and I don't mind reminding people that their struggle doesn't have to be equal to another for them to be worthy of respect and dignity.

This! I got A LOT of this today in light of the Giantbomb thing. I can never quite admit to those that ask how much this annoys me personally.

It irks the fuck out of me.

And each time someone comes at me with it, its almost always some half-assed, embarrassment of an over-simplification of an issue that they're begging for a cosign on for validation. And then, after I screwface them for not knowing their own shit, the next thing on the flowchart is to call me and everyone else who doesn't agree a homophobe/bigot/big meanie.

Learn your shit and draw parallels when and where they apply.

This is the perfect title for a gay porn parody starring Austin Wilde...

Anyway, the best that I can tell about this controversy is that it's about a group of white guys who run a gaming site and pride themselves on diversity in the gaming industry, but when given the opportunity to demonstrate that, the punk out and hire two more white guys for their good ol' boys club of gamers?

Ok.

Ok.

From what i gather, GB aren't particularly hard on championing diversity. With the exception of Patrick. And his recent blog post about expanding potential guests for their podcasts/live shows/panels, etc was probably bad timing in the face of the new hires.

There was already an undercurrent of sentiment. GB just happen to be the ones bearing the cross right now.

I will say this, I hate for struggles to b compared. They need their own identity.

But I really hate that every time someone says "it would be nice if they gay/woman/black main character once in while" wagons get circled and sheer ignorance comes out. Minorities will not take over, chill guys.

To this day it pisses me off when people compare the struggles of the homosexual community to slavery. To me if you're going to compare anything to slavery compare it to the holocaust. I think that'd warrant a discussion (even if I personally believe black struggle over the past centuries is still worse). Point is homosexual community shouldn't compare.

I hate when minority groups try to usurp the struggles of other minorities without any respect given how those struggles differ and what makes them unique. I don't think there's anything wrong with seeking solidarity among oppressed groups for certain issues. But my struggle is not your struggle is not their struggle.

But, at the same time, as a gay black man, I get especially irked when the reason provided for why the struggles faced by black people aren't the same as the struggles faced by gay people is "we didn't make the choice to be black!"

Like, of all the legit reasons there are...

I am so glad I found this thread. You guys make me laugh a lot. And I don't mean to make light of the serious conversations that happen here, learning a lot too, and getting a different perspective on things.

"what do mean you guys?"

You got to laugh to keep from crying sometimes.

Eh, let's be realistic. None of us have gone through slavery, nor have our parents, grandparents, or great grandparents. It should also be obvious that slavery was SO bad and went on for SO long that unless you're talking the total extermination of native Americans there is no comparison and it's insulting to try. And yes, I include the holocaust in with that. Don't even make the attempt.

I don't think anyone is saying what gays are going through is " just like slavery " because that's so far out there it isn't plausible. Now, if youre explicitly talking the endless effort for equality? Being denied basic rights? Lampooned as a joke , or beaten in the street for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Not being able to marry who you want because someone might get offended? Being denied jobs or housing based on what you are?

Yeah, there's some parallels there. Getting into a Dick measuring contest over who had it worse isn't productive, but my personal feeling is that when fighting for equality that means everybody, whether you agree personally or not, and I know I'm not the only guy here that's heard that gay rights is "different" or gotten the "jesus said so" excuse to turn a blind eye here.
