Even as a kid, I knew they were all just cheap imitators. Pretenders to the throne!

TMNT was the true king, but I cannot lie and say that I didn't indulge in the imitators.

I'm not going to even to pretend to lie. It was the skirts, I thought naughty things.

*In school girl voice* Street Sharks! I remember they even had a token black guy character.

As a fan of the original turtles comic I hate what they did to them.

Made them all PG and shit :(

Well if we're talkin bout anime and shiz, I'm gonna do something a black man should probably never do: recommend bishoujo anime.

School Rumble (maybe technically shonen)

and

Lovely Complex. The characters are so endearing and both shows are downright hilarious.

Come at me.

I use to watch Sailor Moon a lot when I was younger. I still have the VHS movie. "The power of loooove" song at the end was deep!

Oh God, that's what they used in the English version? MOON REVENGE FTW

Awww, you liked Lovely Complex? What a great shoujo. The characters were awesome, and I could relate to Risa, who enjoyed video games and was too tall for most boys. Definitely a funny show.

Those were the days. :( I use to watch TMNT religiously and had a bunch of action figures too.

Everybody knows they wanted this bad boy:

I was in Target about 15 minute ago and this middle aged black lady at the register told me I look like Raphael Saadiq.

Okay, guys (and gals).

I was at my local supermarket and something caught my eye. You know those little capsule toys that kids would ask their parents to buy for them before leaving the store? Usually it's some little ninja, maybe a gumball machine, stickers, etc. Look what I found amongst the other items:

Sailor Moon? Y'all buncha kids.

As a youth I watched Robotech, Voltron, and Tranzor Z on a station that I remember coming in all fuzzy. I'd have arguments in school about which Voltron was better, cars or lions. The debate would be mad heated.

... Jem is truly outrageous.

Gentleman AND a Scholar good Sir! Add some Force Five in that mix and we are starting my tweens and such! Man, the memories. So glad Jem is back on. Man even the toys were better! Die Cast friggin' METAL!

I've been asked "what are you" or "what are you mixed with" and i've been told that I am "well spoken" far too often.
People have asked me if I am Black and Asian before, I always say "yes" and then proceed to troll the shit out of them. But more than anything I get the "shocked" look when I meet someone for a business meeting for the first time. That "OH!....[pause] Hi?...[pause]..nice to meet you!" It all depends on what state you live in, here there aren't many black people in corporate so I get it a lot but back home in the Tri-State area I never got that reaction.

I've gotten the "shocked" reaction a few times, but I can't be mistaken for anything except black. That reaction is the best, especially after you make an eloquent point or start quoting facts/people.

It's literally like "o_O" *does not compute*

And I missed the anime convo, but don't sleep on Outlaw Star. The days of DBZ/Gundam Wing were the shit.

However, the DCAU rules them all.

Me either which makes it so silly, I have some what "asian eyes" but not really imo. It's like some people just want to be/want you to be anything but black. I've gotten the "so well spoken", shit so many times I don't think it even registers anymore lol.

Oh boy

I remember a time I was at work and I was helping an elderly lady with something. We were talking about stuff and I shared what I was doing with life blah blah. You guys know how it goes when you talk to older people. Then she asked me about my background, I told her I was Haitian and born here in Miami.

Her response was 0_0. Really? Yes. I mean but you look... Like what? I'm well spoken, well dressed, handsome(yeah she said this)I thinking oh man, "not Haitian". Sure enough her eyes told this was what she was thinking. I'll never understand that people don't understand there isn't a template.

I used to live on 1up.com (my username = firestar46, I'm a forums admin)...but the people paying the bills basically ripped the soul out circa 2008. The forum community splintered off, so I sometimes appear where they're at.

This is basically the only site I'm regularly located now, outside of sports/music blogs or places to watch stuff (mastertoons ftw).
Many moons ago, I used to be at okayplayer as well, and I used to write reviews for games at The Next Level/Gotnext and other sites.

Like I need a thread for that? I'm not black either, dashing invited me so I just make occasional post, I can tan though(Puerto Rican).

On that note, people usually think I am Hispanic/Spanish. It's kind of annoying because even after I tell them I'm black they ignore what I say and keep saying that there are hispanics that look like me and that I do not look black what so ever. That I don't have black features.

To be fair most people are exactly what they look like. If someone (of any race) is sagging their pants off their ass w/ a grill in their mouth I'm going to stereotype them as ghetto. The same as if they had a confederate trucker hat on w/ some overalls I'm going to initially think they are a redneck. My problem is when I am clean cut, dressed in business casual attire and people STILL apply some ghetto/low expectation stereotype to me when I look nothing of the sort.

Since we're talking about "blackness", are there any dark-skinned folks around? I can't count the numerous times I've been asked what country I'm from despite not giving any indications, I have no accent, etc. It's not that I have a problem with people asking where I was born, as that's a pretty normal question for anyone, it's just the assumptions people make. One of my friends Mom actually asked the first time we met immediately, "So what island are you from?" I replied, "Alabama Island". The confusion was grand lol. Another friend's uncle asked me, "So how are things in the old country?" Me: Wha? Him: Ya know, with your tribe, etc. Me: Uhh, my annoying cousins are still annoying in Birmingham. Fun times.

There are some hispanics that tan very dark, there is a chance they might think you're Dominican, though some Dominicans consider themselves black anyway. Anyway it's stereotypes, they already have a picture formed in there head of how black woman look and the picture is wrong.

As Urban Scholar said earlier there isn't a template.
