The Bold Statement thread....

Scarface is the most overrated movie of all time.

Ever.

Bar none.

Don't argue, you're wrong.

now, I liked your FF7 post, I've never tried to criticize it's weaknesses while acknowledging it's strengths because I never saw them, not to say they weren't there, so I appreciate someone who can be... friendlier than I am capable but...

Scarface? what about Fight Club!? that thing is overrated to hell and back, Saving Private Ryan? Jurassic Park? Schindler's List?

ok, I'm picking on Spielberg, but every movie he makes is overrated out the ass! this is not the appropriate forum... I'll stop now

back to the bold statements

too much fuss is made over innovation, I'm sick of innovating and getting further and further away from what made games good in the first place

and the best controllers of all times are these babies
con_AtariDrivingController.jpg

People love Shenmue, but if they had to do those boring, repititious tasks in real life, they'd be tearing out their own throats with sporks.

N64 being carts absolutely rocked!

Destruction Derby 1 was excellent, 2 was a gigantic pile of dog feces and completely ruined the series.

It's perfectly reasonable for quality of graphics to impact how much you like a game.

Resident Evil 4 is like the most overrated game this generation, so.fucking.boring.
For the GC that is, Resident Evil 4 PS2 will be great.

Ookami looks like shit. Killer 7 looks shit, all these quirky bad art games need to stop being prodiced

Japanophiles need to be wiped out, they're ruining the industry

and most of all, i gotta say, Hideo Honda is a little overrated. He might have made some of the best games last gen, im not feeling his work this gen.

oh, Tales of Symphonia is the worst game i've played this gen, happy to see it bomb

Sony and MS are the best thing to happen to gaming, Nintendo must never be allowed to regain their former crown. Nintendo fans are everything thats wrong with the industry (look at Ironclad Ninja for example).

Halo 2 has the worst ending EVER. It doesn't even count as a conclusion to the story, it just ends two levels early

Iwata is the new Reggie
Miyamoto still has it
Reggie is too busy winding IGN up to do any PR
Matt@IGN is a fat bearded, scruffy HoBo with as much humour, wit, and Knowledge as my tuna sandwich
Resi 4 is the “best game this Gen PERIOD”
Zelda will oust Resi 4 as the ”best game this Gen PERIOD”
M$ shocked everyone (Okay mainly me!!) with their ability to market and sell a console this generation
The DS is actually a good piece of hardware
And Folder is well liked around here

The glut of thug games, street racers, and extreme sports games are everything that's wrong with the American game industry, and will eventually lead to a crash, when so called "cool" people drop videogames like the fad they probably see it as.

God of War is overrated trash, the graphics look very nice but the game boils down to pressing [] over and over and over, and doing the same "fatality" move 20 different times in a row. Plus, the lead character is so generic and unlikeable.

Sands of Time was a good game but the combat was frustratingly awful.

Psychonauts has ugly character designs.

When it comes to good games, Japan still does it better, sorry Xbots.

Rare is overrated trash, that's been all flash, no substance since the days of Battletoads.

Counter-Strike is only as popular as it is because:

a) It's a free download.
b) Everyone already had Half-Life anyway when it came out.
c) It will run on even the most ancient of computers.

DOA3 (haven't played the others) is stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Someone said the other day that if DOA3 had just been a normal multiplatform game nobody would've given a fucking shit about it, and I absolutely agree. It's a horrid piece of trash that can just barely be called a fighting game and could more accurately be placed into the genre of "press a button or two to see fucking pretty lights and shit". When I play VF4 Evo it makes me want to go break the nearest copy of DOA3 for simply existing on the same fucking planet.

The Xbox's marketing angle annoys the piss out of me. I was at Gamestop playing Paper Mario once and the Xbox next to me springs to live, shouting "YO GAMERZ HERE'S TEH 411 ON THE NEWEST GAMES TO DROP FOR DA XBOX". Jesus Christ, shut the fuck up.

Team Ninja are the most over-rated developers ever. DOA is the crappiest fighting game ever created, and Ninja Gaiden is shit compared to DMC3

MGS1's "deep" and "meaningful" story is a cliched pile of shit.

The original NES Zelda and Metroid have aged horribly, and are pretty much unplayable today.

Hmm, interesting thread...though there is likely no room for argument.

Anyways, the gameplay mechanics in Halo were ahead of their time and the two games in the series still sport the absolute FINEST FPS gameplay mechanics we've yet seen. Bungie solved so many problems that have continued to plague the genre.

It isn't about console versus PC either. Most other console FPS titles are a joke compared to the best on the PC...but Halo is different. Bungie understood what the genre needed.

Also...

The current Nintendo DS lineup is absolute SHIT and the upcoming release list isn't that hot either. I am interested in the system for a few games, but I simply do not understand the excitement around the system. I can find no more than 3 good games available in the US, and only one of them is even REALLY good.

Madden is the worst thing to happen to the video game industry -- ever.

Thanks the the Madden series and the various other sports titles which EA grew to love, we now witness the same games being spit out year after year... and selling better than decent titles.

David Dayton doesn't like football games

Star Wars fans in the early 80s probably would have said the same thing about the ending of ESB. And the end of the first two LoTR movies were terrible endings too.

They left it as a cliffhanger, get over it. Besides, the story isn't that good anyway.

NON-GAMES ARE THE FUTURE OF THE VIDEOGAMES INDUSTRY.

- videogames have gone as far as they can imo. supposed innovation turns out to be nothing more than tweaks of existing gameplay. videogames are limited by size of team and time in development, so we're never going to get the natural evolution of the current scene because it would be commercial suicide. the deep, engrossing, realistic worlds will remain vapourware, while developers continually spout the 'don't worry, we'll get there next time' bs.

the much derided non-games [which are most definitely videogames] will become the new standard for the industry, breaking out of, and expanding, current genres. they will draw in new gamers and people who have stopped playing.

non-games will become dominant across all platforms.

Eternal Darkness is a great game. It's a Lovecraft rip-off. You people say that like it's a bad thing. Part of Lovecraft is ripping off Lovecraft and the more games that faithfully rip Lovecraft, the better. Very undeserving of the hate.

Kirby is the best game on the DS and it's not worth buying at full price
Half Life 2 would have been better if the AI were over the original's, the scripted encounters save that game
HALO 2's story is what happens when people start watching too much fucking anime.
Having a graduation ceremony for students that aren't finishing high school is simply another way to congratulate mediocrity
Anime/JRPG endings are the worst

Console RPGS's have not evolved since Lunar and FF7. In some aspects they have devolved.

PC's will always produce the best Strategy and FPS games.

Zelda 2 (NES) is the most disappointing game of all time. It was not a good side scrolling game, the graphics were hideously third rate (even at the time), and the overworld looked worse than Ultima 1.

:D :D :D

Chrono Trigger is just a good RPG, crying it to the heavens as the next saviour is pisspoor.

Final Fantasy fanboys/girls need to stay out of this industry.

Microsoft should've just stayed the fuck out of this industry.

Nintendo are fucked, plain and simple.

Sony is the Top 40 hitlist. Full of shit.

I'm a pretentious gaming wanker. And so is everyone who has posted on the Gaming Discussion - no if's, no but's... ONE OF US.. ONE OF US..

Fuck yes. Spielberg is so god-damn overrated. Not that his films don't have plenty of good qualities, but fuck if you can't pick out every god-damn annoying habit he has within the first five minutes of his movies.

P.S. Still, Scarface IS pretty fucking overrated. But people overrate it because they see it as some paragon of cinema, not the schlocky cheese-fest it's supposed to be seen as.

Just out of curiosity, how could Japanophiles be ruining the industry? They've always been here, so doesn't that mean the industry was already ruined until non-Japanophile companies arrived? And doesn't that INCLUDE Sony, since it's a Japanese company which has plenty of flagship Japanese titles to push its crown?

Also, that Okami comment can get you killed around some parts.

Hey Prine, fuck you man. Ironclad Ninja > Prine

BOLD STATEMENT #2: Half of GAF is filled with people who have never played any of the games they argue about. The other half is filled with people just playing Devil's Advocate.

The funny thing is the industry didnt have japanese influence for quite a while before nintendo.

So what prine is saying is that the NES ruined the video game industry!

Yes yes, Atari and Coleco and whatever.

WHATEVER

But that's pretty funny, considering that these players led the industry to a huge crash in 1983 or 84. And that Nintendo saved the industry! But then ruled the industry with a iron fist...

I guess everyone ruined the industry in some way!

*gasp*

Equal opportunity ruining!

well, even though nintendo ruled with an iron fist, we still had options and tons of awesome games. so really they didnt ruin anything (except their marketshare wahaha)

And i was wrong kinda, japanese companies were makign arcade games before the nintendo came out and imo thats still the industry.

God, sp0rsk, don't be so selfish! The industry also includes developers and publishers! And it was a horrible time for them, back in the day.

Nintendo was always here!

* Nintendo fans have exactly the same mentality as Michael Jackson fans.

*Japan avoids look and feel lawsuits by claiming that each individual game is its own genre.

* RPG heroes are becoming demonstrably more gay.

A FPS without mouse support isn't a real game. I mean it.

Fighting game "stories" are the absolute lowest form of writing, even among the shallowness that most video game stories are. This is to be expected when a cool character sketch is assigned a hackneyed motivation for joining a tournament, and then the process is repeated for a dozen other characters and mashed together. If you're seriously interested in a new fighting game because you want to know what happens next, KILL YOURSELF.

Dropship is the best air combat game this generation. BUY DROPSHIP.

Online play is going to stay niche.

Sequels rock. People who enjoyed a game but then complain about sequels coming out are clueless. YOU DON'T LIKE THE GAME ANYMORE, SHUT UP AND GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE.

Oni rocked.

Katamari Damacy rocked and all, but the soundtrack is way overrated. That lounge singer tune is an abomination.

Diablo II isn't fit to wash Nethack's jock strap.

Likewise, F-Zero isn't fit to wash Wipeout's jock strap.

Dynasty Warriors is the greatest beat-em-up series ever. Okay, maybe that's not very bold or controversial, but I wanted to say it.

ONE CONSOLE, ALL GAMES.

Supporting Microsoft in the console market deserves some kind of Gaming Darwin Award. Microsoft has been a leader in fucking over everyone from the consumer to their partners for the past couple decades, and one of the first things they do in the console market is start charging for something that has historically been free, even with computing power and network bandwidth being far cheaper now. Gee, what's the fuckin' pattern here? Funny how you can find tirades and boycotts against EA, Wal-Mart, Rockstar, EB/Gamestop/Best Buy, and so on for their fucked up business practices, but say the same about Microsoft and it's "all companies are bad anyway" and a repost of a PA comic. Keep sticking that head in the sand.

Saying Destruction Derby 2 sucked balls is not a bold statement. :P

And guys, STOP ARGUING. This is a cards on the table thread, not a wah wah I disagree you're wrong you have no taste dead to me wah weh thread.

All PC games are the same three games just remixed differently.

Xbots are indeed racists.

Sony is so dumb sometimes.

Nintendo and it's fans reek of something fierce.

I hate gaming.

Bye.

PC gaming is the dark side of gaming.
Microtransactions are the beginning of the end.

*runs away* (i forgot my Console Jedi light saber)

-FFVII is the best RPG ever.

-DS sucks. I have no interest in any of its games.

-"* Nintendo fans have exactly the same mentality as Michael Jackson fans." - this is the truest statement in this thread.

-PSOne=PS2

-KOTOR was a tedious piece of shit. It had everything needed to be a great RPG, but unfortunetly the level design ruined it all.

-RE4=overrated

Japanophiles certainly aren't great or anything, but anti-Japanophiles are much, much worse.

Nintendo, for all their rehashing and franchise whoring, is still the company with the highest batting average in the industry, and does in fact innovate much more than anyone else.

The industry would be a bazillion times more successful if the average game was $30 or less at release.

The 3/4, pulled-back camera view of games like Fallout, Diablo, and Baldur's Gate is the worst shit ever.

FFVII is hands-down the worst post-Nintendo FF.

Turn-based RPGs with no battle interaction aside from selecting actions from menus need to die a horrible death.

Shig said:

A-fucking-men. It's been years since I bought a $50 game, because that price is absolutely ridiculous...especially when many games can be had for half their asking price within a few months.

Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time

It's more innovative and just more fun. OoT is an all time great, but Majora's Mask is the best game on the N64. (Oh shit, did I just make two bold statements?!)

The first person to scream fanboy in a thread is almost always likely to be one of the biggest fanboys on the forum

Too many people dismiss the importance of presentation in a game, arguing that the only thing that matters, ever, is the gameplay. Yet they enjoy Rez. What the fuck.

I'm so totally disgusted by the stories in most JRPGs that I will never, ever be able to take one seriously. This is assuming that there will never be a JRPG to go 100% out of its way to avoid a gigantic checklist of cliches. In other words, it'd have to be pretty damn charming.

Quake 3 (Rocket) Arena is leaps and bounds beyond Unreal Tournament.

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram is a better game than Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution.

Frequency and Amplitude aren't that good. Nor is Technic Beat, and I'm willing to bet Gitaroo-Man.

and does in fact innovate much more than anyone else.
In fact.

Oni rocked.

I actually liked it, yeah.

Tenchu is far and away better than Metal Gear Solid

Hironobu Sakaguchi is a has-been developer and his two games are going to blow

Halo is mindless and repetitive

Hiroshi Yamauchi is the best thing that ever happened to gaming

Halo is mindless and repetitive

I don't care if you don't like the game, but you really can't call it mindless.

Unless you're one of those freaks who thinks the FPS genre in general is mindless.

Outside of individual player experiences - this industry has never told a great story or delivered a stimulating narrative.

I can see hating on Saving Private Ryan, as it could be credited as the main source for reawakening America's annoying obsession with WWII. After that movie, any and everyone with a story to tell got to tell it... Just stop.

Fight Club is only overrated online; no one in real life hypes it up like Scarface.

Anyway, another bold statement: Killer7 is among the 10 best console games this gen.
