The Division PC performance thread

No, this has to do with Microsoft's new driver in KB3140743. UNinstall this KB and then block it from downloading. Voila.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/48pae4/random_mouse_lagging_and_beeping/

To block it from installing again:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

It looks like KB3140743 was a cumulative update; they're on KB3140768 now. Should I still block the latter? I'm not sure if they already managed to fix this since it was just posted today.

Edit - KB3140768 still contains the bug, make sure to block that update after uninstalling KB3140743 (or KB3140768 if you already have that installed).

Thanks for the heads up guys. Ran into this issue with my Steam controller(I guess it's an xinput issue), but then I didn't see KB3140743 on the list of updates I could block until I saw Wallach's post and noticed it got rolled into a different update.

That makes me wonder. Is GPU utilisation on AMD rather poor in outdoor areas? Or does it still report back 99-100% utilisation inspite of having all that driver overhead?

I am not sure how they do it necessarily, but looking at the NV optimisation guide (which is awesome as usual Andy), it looks like the internal resolution of the effect is decidedly higher on Ultra.

its not cpu limited

my rig is

i5-3570k @ 4.2
8gb ram
gtx780 dcu2 oc edition

I can play the game smoothly at the High presets without modifying anything else @ 1080p, I don't get 60 fps all the time but the game is smooth and great.

I figured I'm probably not the only one with that setup.

Anyone having this problem:

Whenever I exit the game my computer freezes? Well it doesnt freeze as I can use the keyboard and alt tab and tab to different icons but I cannot click anything with the mouse. Perhaps this is because I have been using a controller in the division?

I am forced to alt tab and tab to computer shut down.

This feels like the first game I've bought in a long time that is really kicking my 780ti's ass. I followed the nvidia guide to turn the demanding stuff down to high or medium, but playing at 1080p I still get random drops from 60 down to 50 and 45fps. Polaris and Paschal can't get here soon enough.

I noticed a weird thing last night. I was running Shadowplay FPS counter. Was at a place where I was getting 57 FPS. I turned vsync from Off to Auto, shadowplay FPS counter went.....UP.....to 60 FPS.

What is going on in the engine where VSYNC increases FPS?

That's something I would like to know as well - does the driver report its own CPU usage as GPU utilization? I mean we know that there are different "100% utilization" because of how differently the GPU is heating up under the same "99% utilization" figures under different loads.

its not cpu limited

It's not CPU limited on NV's drivers, it is a bit limited by the CPU on AMD's:

Which I've already said on the previous page.

Has anyone else noticed some weird animations with enemy deaths? They seem to run at a lower framerate sometimes, reminding me of the cloth thing in AssSyndicate.

Had an issue last night where in game events stalled and then caught up a bit later.

Shooting an enemy, well trying to, gun would not fire, then it would, then no impacts would register and the game would catch up, registering hits, then the game would move on.

Then it would give a server error message, is this related to server load or coincidental.

Seen this as well. Also, the game has 30fps ragdolls :(

What settings are people using for a rig similar to mine?

i5 4670k @ 4.2ghz
GTX 760 2gb
8gb RAM

It defaulted to High but I'm only get 30-40 fps. Even turning it to low gets me between 45-60FPS.

980ti here, even at 1080p I'm turning down a handful of effects to stabilize the frame rate. ive found shadows to be the biggest hit, turning it down from NVidias top setting to their second setting has helped immensely. Aside from that I also tone down particle effects, depth of field and volumetric fog by one notch. Even then it probably isn't locked 60fps at all times, but it is close.

Looks pretty great, I'm happy with the picture quality and performance.

Also lord don't use the in game frame limiter it was making things so choppy.

I should probably overclock my 4790k and see if that helps. Also on a HDD so that could hurt a bit.

So, i guess i am a lost... I am not seeing a way to block the update i need.

I removed KB3140743

Now i want to block KB3140768, but how? I followed the link and downloaded that tool to hide, but i'm not seeing it there..

Blah reading these issues I feel like i should return this on Steam and buy it for PS4. I finished downloading it this morning and booted it up as I was getting ready for work and I was stuck on a black screen which wouldn't let me tab out and my keyboard lights went out.

This is actually the most optimized PC port I've played in a long time. It runs amazingly well on my 980 Ti / 4790k / 16GB RAM / SSD combo @ 1440P.

Averaging ~75fps. The lowest dip I've seen was to 56fps. Excellent port.

I maxed everything out @ 1440P with the following exceptions:

Particle details: High
Contact shadows: All Low
Depth of Field: Medium
Particle detail: High
Shadow Quality: High
Volumetric Fog: Medium

Toning these settings down comes with almost ZERO compromise as far as actual graphics during gameplay goes.

Andy's guide really helped with this:

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gui...formance-guide

It really illustrates which settings are truly superfluous during gameplay. This is not a game that you can just completely max out and forget about it, but for how beautiful it is with a few settings toned down, the performance is fantastic IMO.

At work so I can't explore in depth, but is turning down shadow quality and contact shadows really not too noticeable? I have identical settings to you save for those two. Might be worth it if it really makes 1440p attainable.

It runs well (when it runs). I do get some strange LOD issues, tho. Like, graffiti disappearing the closer I get to a wall, certain textures and shadows popping in right in front of me, etc. Game looks great, but there are some graphical issues that mar it's beauty.

Toning down shadow quality from HFTS to High will give you, by far, the single largest performance boost in the game. We're talking a 15-20 FPS difference.

Here's some interactive screenshots to show the differences between the two:

Comparison 2

Comparison 3

HFTS is really impressive from a technology standpoint, but I think I might actually prefer the hard edged shadows of "High" over the softening effect of HFTS. It's certainly not worth the performance hit to me.

As for "contact shadows", switching it to "all low" is pretty much completely unnoticeable for me in gameplay.

Thanks for posting that. The 3rd really shows how much better the higher end one is, but for performance wise, it seems like the lower end would still work well and still looks pretty good. Going to go modify my settings to see how this works out.

Looking at the other pictures I'm wondering if it shouldn't be the opposite on that last pic, with HFTS being the one with the softer looking shadows...

Oh wow, looking at those sliders, pretty noticeable between nvidia shadows and high. But at such a strong FPS hit I'm just not sure.

First thing's first is I have to get the damn game to recognize higher resolutions than native. No idea why it isn't giving me the choices.

They pulled the drivers, Last weeks, 362.00 is back up in its place.

I just noticed this on my machine last night.

I have the 364 drivers installed ATM, but I have a new notification that 362 are the "latest" drivers.

lol

Nvidia has been dropping the ball with drivers lately.

I'm very much looking forward to AMD's polaris lineup.

HFTS only gets softer as shadows get further away. It's attempting to recreate the way shadows form in real life. The last shot with the bicycle spokes is correct as the shadows are very close to the bicycle.

With my 970, 2500k @ 4.2, and 8 gb of ram I get a pretty solid framerate. I'm usually between 55-60, and some occasional drops into the upper 40s to low 50s when things get hectic. I'm playing on high settings for the most part (used the optimal settings on the GeForce app). Game looks gorgeous and runs smoothly. Very happy with it.

i5 2500k + amd 7950 at 1080p. game defaulted to pretty much everything on low. i kept anything to do with shadows on low and set everything else to medium, turned off AO and subsurface scattering. it dips as low as 40s outside while getting as high as 70 inside. not happy with performance at all. i know this game can be a looker, but the IQ at my settings arent doing it for me. It just might be time for a 390/970.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Thanks for the tips on bypassing the black screen issue (they're in the OP now, and I added a link to Andy's ever-helpful guide). I tried to benchmark the game yesterday but eventually gave up. I'll give it another go tomorrow later today.

Runs fantastic on my desktop (i5-4670k + 16gb ram + 970 3gb), runs like shit on my laptop (i7 4720HQ + 8Gb ram + 960M). I'll have to tinker with it more. Could well be driver related. I should add that my laptop issues were running on low in windowed mode. If I put it in full it will almost certainly run way better.

edit: How are the new 364.51 drivers running? Is anyone having crashing or performance issues? I was effected by the initial 364.00 and I've got it running well on 362...So I want to be certain before upgrading.

a 29% cpu OC is giving 5% more performance. hardly what id call cpu limited. and this is on a much faster card than the 390 v 970 DF video. they used a 4790k at 4.6 ghz for that video.

Yeah HFTS looks really good but I don't think it's worth that chunk of frames. Especially when High still looks great for the most part

What would guys recommend...

4k at 40-60fps with some settings set to medium -or-

1080p with everything set to max at solid 60fps?

Been going back and forth and not sure which I prefer, so just curious as to what others may choose.

Agreed. On my 980Ti, I just set the preset to Ultra, add max post-processing SMAA, and leave it be. Looks fantastic and runs smooth as glass.

Yeah I think those shadows are lost on me playing at 1080p.

Wasn't sure where to put this but I'll try here - I bought the Steam version as I had a ton of credit but only bought the standard version - my question is, if I buy the season pass later on am I limited to getting it through Steam or can I buy a Uplay key ?

I hope that nonsense with the mouse gets fixed soon.

Volumetric Fog also seems to be a bit of a performance killer. I was dropping down all the way to the 30s in the Hudson Refugee Camp mission with it on high, and dropping it down to medium helped a lot.

I posted a fix for that some posts back, if you missed it. It's on Microsoft to fix that, and I've no idea when they'll actually get it sorted.

Absolutely the higher res.

I'm playing at 1440p with my 980 and mostly at medium/high. I tried 1080 at ultra and, honestly, I didn't see enough of a boost to the graphics to sacrifice the sharpness.

The medium settings do a great job already and you're rarely paying close enough attention to notice the difference.

When you view your installed updates in the control panel, is Cumulative Update KB3140768 listed? If so uninstall that, block it with the tool, then restart.

Yeah I tried but I still had the same issue :S I'm okay with it unless my controller loses connectivity while I'm in game. In that case my entire game is gone.

Weird issue here on my 980x2 setup, after running the game for a while (15-30 minutes) it starts really slowing down, with it dropping to 0 fps for a second then picking back up with my character having moved if I was in the process of walking. I'm on the 362 driver. Any ideas what might be going on? Is the beta driver on NV's website ok now? It's 364.51.

Initial load time is pretty slow. Does that improve on a SSD or is it just the servers?

I have it on a normal drive right now. Unfortunately I don't think there's an easy way to move it to a SSD through uplay though :(

You're all heroes for figuring this out. I knew it was my xbox one controller, but I guess I just uninstalling the wrong updates. Cheers!
