The Division - Review Thread

Personally I would say no, but it depends. How much so you enjoy something like Borderlands? It's pretty much Diablo in shooter form with great graphics/polish and solid mechanics.
Oh, I tried Borderlands 2 due to its really nice artstyle. I forced myself through the first two hours and had to stop.

Guess I'll pass on this then if it's like that. Just not my style of game.

Just bought the game....

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS ALWAYS ONLINE. Sad none of the reviews mentioning it

Just my luck I can't get past the opening cinematic. it keeps fucking kicking me off with a DELTA 20000984 error. Every 30 seconds it kicks me off WTFFFFFF

Is there matchmaking in this? I am completely ignorant to the title but a Diablo TPS has me interested. I liked Destiny for way too long and still play Diablo III. Any good videos yet regarding the game systems and mechanics?

Great scores. It's not really my cup of team (seeing as how multi-focused it is), but it's always nice to see quality titles released.

Remember when everyone was sure this would be the Most Disappointing Game for 2016?

wow.
Ubisoft has had a bad track record there admittedly, so doing it right for once is nice. At worst it might not be quite what I would want but I probably had some unrealistic hopes I knew they couldn't satisfy.

Why do you all talk of Ubisoft as a single developer. This game was created by Massive, which is a very good studio.

I think this will be my first ever Ubisoft game (not counting Child of light and that world war 1 game). Game looks sweet but ill think ill wait for a few patches and stuff. Looks like there is not much to do after hitting max lvl.

Wow, I didn't expect those reviews.

None of my friends are interested in this game. Can I get a good experience playing solo/with randoms?

It's ace solo too.
That's the only way I play it, minus some DZ occasionally.

Interesting. I might give it a try sometime this summer, although finding a spot between my exams and Legion could prove to be a bit of a tall order.

I should also say, I've played 18 hours in 4 days.
Not many games grab me like that.

Ubisoft is very big on the cross pollination of design ideas, particularly with AAA stuff. They're way more diverse with the smaller games admittedly, but I don't think it's too wild to expect some of that mentality to get into one of their biggest releases this year, most likely THE biggest AAA game for them.

Of course, there is something to be said for implementing worn concepts well.

Hmm... pretty good scores.

Would you guys who like it recommend it to someone only looking to play single player for the interesting campaign/story/characters, and doesn't care for multiplayer (don't even have PS+) or MMO's?

I wouldn't if you literally won't do anything but play solo for a campaign. You could MAYBE do it for some Diablo-esque action, but I still wouldn't. The story is quite good for the kind of game that it is, but that's not the same thing as a single player rpg

Is this game "always online"? If so ---> no buy

Edit: ahaha, the season pass is 39,99? Definitely no buy.

So you're not buying an online co-op shooter because it's always online and you're not buying the base game because the season pass is priced similarly to every other game these days.

Sounds legit.

I"m about 10 hours in. Have played completely solo so far and would give it a solid 8 or so out of 10.

I'm sure once I start matchmaking and playing DZ it will get even better.

What... I'm 30h in and loving every second. lol

the shooting is rough, the combat is boring and i don't enjoy the loot for a loot game. a realistic looking gun that plays and looks just the same as all the other one's is not exciting for me. I'm already bored of NYC, needs more variety.

All my friends hated it, i really thought it would get 6s all over the place. Guess im am outlier.

I'm sorry but I feel like asking what is the point of rushing to make a Review Thread OT for one of the most anticipated games of the gen and then not give a fuck and update it at all?
It's actually a disservice to other members because I'm sure someone else would've picked up the torch if OP didn't take it upon himself to create such thread or just said yesterday that he was busy with life and a d willing to pass the baton to another freely available member.

Hey, just my own 2 cents that's all

like Destiny playing this game with friends and real life people makes it fun.

My funniest moment was going into the DZ with a friend and another team saw us. we heard this on their mics "yo watch those guys they might try to kill us"

it made my day

Nope, it's a massively offline singleplayer shooter, so it's never online even when you want to.
You're actually forbidden from even looking at the internet when someone so much as name The Division.

Edit: ahaha, the season pass is 39,99? Definitely no buy.

Nope, that's the price of the full game befofe the mandatory discount is applied (it's $29.99 for the first week, like usual for B productions of this caliber); despite every other game having similarly priced Season Passes, this game won't even allow you to think of spending a penny on DLC, if you look at your wallet while thinking of The Division you'll be banned permanently from playing the game (luckily it's totally offline so who gives a shit just keep playing anyway): it'll be supported with massive expansions until 2018, for free.

I know it's tough when a game flies so under the radar like this one where to get a faint idea on how it plays you gotta scour the internet for weeks looking for a tiny bit of info, I feel you man, so I just wanted to clear you of any doubts.
Now rush to a Gamestop near you!

Too common of a trend, unfortunately.

It actually is updated as far as the current Metacritic and Opencritic scores are concerned, there's just not that many reviews out there yet.

I'm hoping to be wrong over time but I'm getting the same feeling. Granted I'm only about an hour in but it does feel a bit boring and lifeless so far.

Like anything all games are not made for everyone. Sell quick if this is your honest opinion. Get a few bucks back while you can.

Still, it's a bad trend and it shouldn't be allowed to become the norm, imo.

Uh? No, it's not? It's missing 3 fully scored reviews and each and everyone of the in-progress, where we usually post snippets.

I don't think so. The campaign is very typical an outside of the main missions, the side missions are really boring and repetitive. This game was designed to be a played as a co-op experience.

I'm not sure you're an outlier if all your friends hate it too

The city and exploration is great singleplayer, but that's probably 1/3 of the experience. The 2nd third is doing the main missions on Hard with co-op (via matchmaking is fine), which is fucking phenomenal, and the last piece of the puzzle is Dark Zone, which is a refreshing, innovative and solo-able brand of player-vs-player multiplayer.

So arguably you're missing out on 2/3 of the experience by not playing it online.

However, the city is BIG, and it has great loot game and really good mechanics, so there's still a lot to do by yourself, though it might be a bit less compelling.

- the shooting is only rough if Destiny is your standard for shooting. The Division has fucking great shooting, but obviously it's not going to beat Destiny which is best in class
- the combat is boring until you play missions on Hard - with 3 others so there are more mobs. Play that way and the battles/teamplay is phenomenal
- did you do many of the main missions? In the main mission's pinkies are more level and environment variation than most games have in their entire campaign. The city itself can get prettu one-note, I agree, but the dynamic weather helps, and all the actual missions are brilliant

I just posted this on another thread but:

I actually think Division is a step back from vanilla Destiny in a lot of ways. In Destiny's basic missions, you'd shoot your way to a point where you'd activate your Ghost and then you'd have to hold off a wave or two of enemies. The biggest difference here is you're not using a Ghost to activate the waves of enemies.

I am starting to find the game extremely boring outside of DZ most of the main missions. The AI in this game is absolute crap imo which is why I think I'm finding this game a bit boring if not doing those things.

Sorry, I meant only that the scores were up-to-date. Opencritic has since dropped to 89 and Metacritic is still 91. I know there's a bunch of reviews missing from the OP, and I agree that if people are going to post Review threads they should follow them through.
Same thing happened to the Far Cry Primal review thread, OP did a hit and run.

I fully disagree with what you say about Destiny's mission design. In Destiny literally every mission is "Go A to B, defend B" rinse and repeat. In Division you get "Go A to B, defend B", "Carry object from A to B, with limited movement/firepower", "Search for item(s) at A, activate within time limit, then get to B", "Time limit active: kill all enemies or get A to B", and some other variations on all of the above. I literally don't think you can argue Destiny has more mission variation.

Although I feel you re AI and broader experience. However - as i mentioned - things improved a lot for me once i started playing the proper missions on Hard with full co-op teams (even if they were just randoms). It really shines on Hard and with a full team. Gets difficult, intense and demanding.

I remember some great AI moments in the beta, and have had fewer in the full game. I think playing co-op fucks with the AI
