The Division - Review Thread

Jim's review sums up pretty much all my feelings about the game. Its been overwhelmingly average for me and my friend.

Unlimited as in easy to get ammo yeah. Restock boxes all over the show, baddies drop plenty of ammo etc but then for game design purposes it has to be as it's a loot em up which is all about shooting enemies to get better loot :P It's very MMO/gamey in that regard and if that puts you off that's understandable.

That does not put me off at all. I loved Diablo 2, Destiny was great until I could not put too much time into end-game content which was very community dependent with shit community tools, played several MMO's, etc..

As a design perspective with how you have access to basically the top weapons (looks wise) right off the bat, and the better ones are basically the same lookish with better stats seems to suck out the scalable fun, and wanting to get that 'Windforce' so to speak.

I will have to read more into it, to see how the weapon looting is handled with the 'end game' like gear.

Just saw gamestop review, I was expecting 9 from the positive things he had in the video review lol.

Out of 42 friends currently online on PSN, 19 of them are playing this. Been watching streams, read reviews, but I'm just not feeling it. Sort of saddened by it.

For what I see on twitch the end game is rather grindy and well, rubbish. If they planned to have people play in the dark zone for end-game then they didn't do enough to make it worthwhile, repeating story quests for the daily is just like destiny where it becomes boring rather quickly.

The first two free updates add things but it sounds like a lot of extra end game content is all paid dlc, plus IMO the game needs a PvP team battle mode soon to keep the players busy.

Yeah that's something I really don't know much about too be honest so hopefully one of the other fine folks here who are at endgame already will be able to tell you.

I got to level 30 the other night and I’m still enjoying the game. However, the setting and loot are the biggest concerns for me. I mean NYC looks great; however there is only so much you can do with it before it gets boring. With Destiny and other sci-fi games you can create all these wonderful and unique places. Same thing applies to the loot; there is only so much modern day military equipment to choose from. I mean a perfect example would be flamethrowers. The Cleaner use them, so why can’t I? They would be a pretty fun addition. It is a good game, but it does feel bleh after a while. Hopefully the content they add later will help spice things up a bit; all that being said, I’ll continue to play it because I’m still enjoying it.

How come? It's basically more grounded version of TLOU.

Totally different context from what I can tell. The Last of Us is a world devastated by a disease and society has completely collapsed. There is no government left. Communication lines no longer exist. The world was put back into the dark ages and it's every one for his or herself.

As far as I can tell, in The Division, this is just one city under quarantine and for whatever reason a call was sent out to hundreds of thousands of secretly trained badasses around the country to go in and fucking murder everyone who is causing trouble in the city.

It sounds like a right-wing gun-loving militia man's wet dream, honestly, and I don't think I'd be comfortable playing taking on such a role.

This game is great but it's missing something that really sets it apart from other loot grinds. Dark Zones are neat but more of a novelty than anything else. A more diverse selection of guns would be great, some more future tech. More diverse enemy AI and unique enemy types would be really welcomed. And there should be way more flashy, unique, clothing options, which may be solved come end-game. But <random> puffy jacket just doesn't cut it. There is a wealth of clothing options but everything seems to be outdoorsy puffy jacket shit.

the shooting is rough, the combat is boring and i don't enjoy the loot for a loot game. a realistic looking gun that plays and looks just the same as all the other one's is not exciting for me. I'm already bored of NYC, needs more variety.

All my friends hated it, i really thought it would get 6s all over the place. Guess im am outlier.

You are not alone. I have a lot more hours into this game. But im only playing it still because of achievements. (Pretty easy 1000). But the game feels really shallow, repetitive and boring. Getting the last couple of collectables is really not a fun experience.
I expected a lot of 6s or 5s out of 10 for this.
A lot of the game world is copy paste. A lot of locations are reused. I dont get the praise for "detail".

This is what worries me the most, and why I am still on the fence.

Maybe it is the effect that people wanted a Destiny contender/replacer so bad, they have some short term revisionist history that both are pretty equal content wise. Does this have PvP?

I agree completely with everything that you said. Luckily Dark Souls 3 comes out next month. Just have to hold on until then!

Those are precisely the people you're killing.

This is actually the best story summary I've seen for this game. Should be on the back of the box.

Wow this thread a few days ago was a paradise... Now is the hell.. what happened? Fatigue?

I fucking love the game. Can't get enough of it. I think there will always be a subset of people who just simply won't like games in this genre, due to their inherent nature of being a bit repetitive, grindy, and not all that driven by narrative.

Sure, but how are you any different as the player? Because you're "official" or something? Somehow the government backing makes it even worse in my mind.

You're a member of a paramilitary force. The official organization name is Strategic Homeland Division. You're not there to randomly assault people, you're there to protect NYC's JTF (police, EMTs, firefighters) from right wing zealots (cleaners), gangbangers, Rikers escapees, and others. Like no mission is you going out on a hit job, it's often about hostage rescue and protecting supplies.

It seems that in general it's much harder to get to a 9 MC than it used to be, I can see U4 being the best in the series and still land around a low 9, high 8, it won't get a crazy 9.6 no matter what imo, unless it does something new and mind blowing.
Yup, review scores have come back down to earth this gen which is a very good thing. Not every legitimately good game is a 9+ anymore.

8 is the new 9.

It's not a Destiny replacer though as it doesn't play like Destiny, like at all. Two different games. This is much more of an RPG than Destiny is as well, always was.

Well the whole game is about taking New York back from the disorganised chaos and gangs going on around you and trying to find out what happened/stop them.

Can't see what's so 'right wing' about it to be honest. Unless you think killing gangs of bad guys doing evil things during an epidemic is somehow 'evil' or worse than any other videogame out there then fair enough.

Part of the reason I've not pulled the trigger on this game. I was bored of NYC in games before this game even released and playing the beta didn't change my mind.

Yeah, I found an echo of cleaners torching a family in their car, and another one of ganebangers beating a couple to death with some bats.
But the legitimately great games(Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, MGSV) of 2015 all scored above 90.

Division is at least as good as any of those tbh.

Wow an 8/10...might as well only pick it up when it drops below $20 after huge discounts. I need someone else's opinion before I can make a purchase.

Real funny when a review comes in lower, that's when a thread turns to shit.

Some people were waiting for the low score review that would align with their opinion of the game. "Told you so guys! This person think it's bad!".

However, that is not what was going on. The main conversation was people such as myself, asking valid questions to see if it was a purchase now or not.

I have been gaming a long time, especially MMO's and other loot games, knowing you can't have a review, that is that realistic, so soon, and be rated 95-100, and seen all the content the game had to offer to warrant that.

A red flag went up right away with this type of game. And the more I am reading, the more I am seeing, Destiny, only no PVP, no varied environments, and maybe worse end game content out of the gate. And the later reviews seemed to spend more time with the scope of the game, and not the initial 3 hour wow factor.

So can we not derail in the typical purchaser vs. non-purchaser false narrative?

I agree with basically everything Jim said, although I'm still finding the game fun enough at 8 hours in. I already feel the repetition setting in, though. I imagine another 5-10 hours and I'll be done.

It's definitely a competent game in nearly every respect, it just doesn't feel like it does anything particularly interesting.

The combat is fine.
The open world is fine.
The missions are fine.
The story is fine.

Everything is....fine. It's OK.

it's been bad at almost every review outlet for the past 15 years actually. anything less than an 8 is generally ignored as far as I've seen.

I think this game is a turning point for me, time to stop reading reviews and look at twitch/general not hyped raw gameplay instead.

The game review system and scores are fucked.

There is PVP? And base game content blows Destiny out of the water- including all of its DLC.

How come someone mentioned earlier there was no PvP set up like destiny?

I am trying to get information from here.

Agreed with that one.

There is PvPvE, the Dark Zone is an area where you can find high level enemies and other players to fight against if you wish
Check the OT for more info

The DZ is a PVP zone. You can individually or as a group either hunt normal players or go on a rogue hunt instead. Incidentally, the actual RPG mechanics, gameplay, missions, environments, story, and contextualization of everything you're doing in the game is better done in Division.

There's PvP in context of being able to shoot other players etc. But in its current iteration its a lot more world PvPvE in the Dark Zone. An area where you are shooting AI, shooting other players (where the rogue system comes into play) and getting loot.

In terms of say Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Capture The Lootbox or whatever then no there's nothing as organised as that. Not sure if they'll ever add it in.

A good channel with lots of videos on The Division is the Marcostyle Divsion channel. Should have lots of useful info for you to look at :)

There is PvP, but it's not traditional sPvP that most people are familiar with. It's more opened world PvP.

Gotcha. Thanks for the feedback.

I had no interest in buying this game. While I like games like WoW and Diablo III, I was totally bummed out by the shit show that was Destiny. My friend bought it and since there have been no major disasters with servers and bugs I decided to jump in.

We are having a bunch of fun playing with people on our friends group and, while I agree with the people who are dissatisfied with the game, it has been a worthwhile purchase for me.

If I had nobody to play with it would probably not be as fun.
