The DS, why i am proud of Nintendo for what they did.

Firstly there is a large chasm between people when it comes to videogames. There are gamers and there are non gamers. These non gamers find gaming too complex etc. ZI see this as a valiant attempt at getting those people to play videogames.

The peripheral abilities, thus far all periperals have been a secondary option. So people had to buy them to play the game and thus had been a impediment to selling potential for these kind of games and thus an unnattractive propostion for companies. We finally get to see if there is a real market for these kind of games and if there are new experiences to be had with these devices.

Lastly i commend Nintendo for taking such as risk with the ds. They could have EASILY scrapped together a handheld with the same power consumption as the DS with a little more power to compete with the psp. But they didn't.

For once in the last decade they actually did something commendable for gaming. It makes me want to think of returning to be one of their fans.

Me too... me.. too.. (slowly starts to clap and stand up. crowd of 60.000 people does the same. Cue inspirational music).

I think my mom, dad, aunt or uncle would find playing a DS more complex than playing a Gamecube. This topic will only cause problems. :lol

Agreed.

My mom: "How do you turn this thing on- oh. Okay. Press....START. Okay. Ooo! Which screen do I look at? So much is going on! Do I use the pencil now? It's......oh well, I lost. Fun toy, son."

Maybe i was expecting a little too much with the DS. The touchscreen does provide a new method of control that hasn't been seen in the video game market. It's just that the implementation of that method isn't exactly exciting. As simple as Feel the Magic was, i think it was possibly the best demo of the touchscreen of the few DS games i've played.

i also can't stress my disappointment over the lack of the DS alerter feature enough. As much as Nintendo talks about community, they really screwed up by not shipping the DS with this. You can't build a community if its would-be inhabitors can't see each other.

Well, just to be fair here:

My mom: "You have to find the guy's face on the top screen? Okay, there he is. Got him again. This is easy. Wait, where the hell is he now? What is this? Oh, there he is. Oh no, they're moving! Got him! Oh no! Out of time."

Me: "Okay, let me show Dad now..."

My mom: "No. One more game."

Hell yeah, the same with my inlaws, the wifes of my friends and even the co-workers of my wife at her office. I have seen the DS for like 30 minutes when it arrived last week. Everybody is hogging the damn thing. I need a second one and fast..

ok now i'm confused, so what are you commending them for again?

While there are some "innovative" things you can do with the touchpad you'll never convince me it's nothing more than a gimmick. If stuff like that was what gamers really wanted we'd have modern day versions of the powerpad, powerglove, R.O.B., and the virtual boy. Way it is now the DS will be fine stopgap and nothing more till Nintendo releases it's next gameboy that will be graphically superior to the PSP. When that time comes the DS will be fondly thought of like those other "innovations" :D

Many seems to forget Iwata's initial quote that he was happy if only 10% liked the DS or something.

Seems to me that Nintendo didn't have that high expectations from the start. Nintendo are aware that the DS is different, and that some people might be disappointed in it, while others love it.

The hardware is not nearly powerful enough and Nintendo is releasing games for it that probably were made in 5-6 months. Plus, the games themselves are not that innovative/fun.

If they rush out the next Zelda like they did Wind Waker then I'm not supporting or buying there games anymore.

i always thought they were purposely lowering expectations to soften the blow of the DS. Launch software is hardly indicative of the potential of the hardware, and while i'm looking towards the future for more innovative games, there's not much that's been announced that looks wowwing in any sense. Guess we'll see what E3 brings -- Nintendo's likely holding out until then.

I think the DS is incredibly lame and I'm embarrassed for those people who suckle at it's teat. But there's a lot of good things happening again on GC, so no reason to hate on Nintendo. At least it has an interesting Bejeweled rip-off (Zoo Keeper) coming. Monkeys>>>>>gems.

What’s wrong with the DS? Its launch line up was better plenty of other consoles, plus there will be a healthy flow of releases during the year.

No it wasn't. The DS had a horrific launch lineup in the US, and its Japan launch line up was only marginally better. I love my DS but one of the most disappointing things has been its atrocious launch. I've seen people pull better launches out of their pus-infected anus sores than Nintendo did for that thing.

I don’t think it was as bad as the PS2 or PSP launch, I am not saying it was great but it was solid in Japan but was kinda sucked in the states.

Still I think we will get lucky with Wario ware, Mario and pokemon dash all at launch. Wario Ware and Mario are MINE!!

Ya. The DS didn't even register on my radar because of the launch lineup. I rushed out to get one because of the GBA playback comparison pics. I do love the touchscreen minigames on Mario though.

You're talking about the Australian launch now, which is fine.

America did not get any Pokemon Dash. Pokemon Dash sucks by every indication we have, but I won't judge it until I play it. Wario Ware is nice and all, but we just got Wario Ware Twisted! on GBA like five days ago. I mean we're REALLY stretching for what dictates worthwhile purchases here because they are 'franchise titles'. And Mario 64 DS, while awesome always and thankfully renewed thanks to 30 more stars and mini games, is still just a remake of a nine year old game.

I mean this is Nintendo trying to redefine the boundaries of what people can classify as a "good launch" just because it contains titles that have "big franchise names" in them.

It's like the launch has a Pokemon game, that must mean it's a well thought out launch! The launch has a Mario game, so boy that must have been a lot of work! Gamecube only got Luigi's Mansion! The launch received Wario Ware, so it's like GBA all over again! And GBA rules!

I mean, I like DS...and I like Mario 64 DS... and Feel the Magic XX/XY is a nice diversion... but the launch was just bad by any measure. Chokkan Hitofude seems nice and Band Brothers seems ok despite average-to-slightly-above average scores, but none of those came to America at launch and neither are they coming to Australia at launch, so that can't improve those.

Agreed!

One thing I like about the DS is it doesn’t focus on eye candy, I hope developers don’t try to make “realistic” 3D games because they are going to look awful.

I would rather the console focus on 2D titles and more “cartoon/Anime” Visuals in the 3D titles.

I agree a LOT. The lack of true analog control makes this even more plausible. Oh, except I want lots of FPS games for DS. They're perfect for this platform.

This hasn't been the best of times for Nintendo it seems, the GC while backed with a number of good titles hasn't really done as well as the Xbox or PS2.

IMO the DS is a little more gimmick than innovation. The touch screen is novel but it's not as if The Almighty visited a vision never before seen by man to the DS designers, PDAs have utilized touch pads for quite awhile so I can't be all like "oh Nintendo, how ever did you come up with such an amazing innovation!?"

Also it's still not the most comfy thing to hold and operate. I'm sure people will respond with "you get used to it" and stuff like that, but you shouldn't have to. Just look back at the SmartJoy Frag threads, that's chock full of people who agree for whatever reason that there shouldn't be a period of "getting used to things."

You're never going to pull those Nintendo folks away from that teat they apparently seem to be suckling at these days.

From our good friends at M-W.com:

"
Main Entry: 1gim·mick
Pronunciation: 'gi-mik
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
1 a : a mechanical device for secretly and dishonestly controlling gambling apparatus b : an ingenious or novel mechanical device : GADGET
2 a : an important feature that is not immediately apparent : CATCH b : an ingenious and usually new scheme or angle- gim·micky /-mi-kE/ adjective "

By Jove it is a Gimmick! :P

Don't get me wrong, I like my DS but even though I own 8 games for it I find myself playing GBA stuff on the thing. Really the only thing that interests me till May is WWare so it's gonna be a long dry run for a bit.

I would have rather Nintendo released a new GBA, same style/size as the SP with:

The DS screen (backlit)
The DS 3d power + proper texture filtering
One screen (to fit SP case design) -can still have touch I guess, although years of playing PDA games tell me that stylus games arn't so hot

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
