Just got it, and damn it's awesome. I'm disappointed though, they seem to have nerfed the utter shit out of thievery/speech/merch compared to Morrowind. Not being able to immediately unload stolen goods is rough, and persuasion seems to have little effect on anything.

Persuasion in Morrowind was a total wash. Almost entirely at the behest of the dicerolls. I have vivid memories of mashing X for minutes at a time watching the numbers climb and fall over and over like a total chump. I'm content with the new system in place so far for at least not being so arbitrary.

I still hate the new lockpicking minigame, and I haven't explored bartering too much, but it doesn't seem to really offer much guidance in the risk factor.

Probably a dumb question, but has anyone cleaned out Velverin yet? It's the first dungeon ( Elvish ruins ) you encounter as you emerge from the sewers. Those winding, labyrinthine corridors are pretty easy to get lost in the first time through.

After clearing it out, I started wondering -
the necromancer in the last room had an "undelivered" letter. I'm sure this was part of some kind of quest from one of the guilds, to find this guy, kill him and then use the letter to expose the Imperial he's been working with. But I'll be damned if I can figure out who I should talk to in order to complete the quest. I kept his staff and skull robe, in case I need them later to turn in as evidence that I killed him. Anyone have an idea who gives this quest?

It has complete control over bartering. Getting their disposition in the 70's and 80's can often lead to 15%-20% more/less on resale/buying. Doesn't mean much at the begining when you are dealing with 20 or 30 gold items, however once you start getting into the hundreds that ability to gain extra % is awesome.

it's here. i have it.
Actually i have my friend's copy here, i reserved the limited edition but it will arrive tomorrow (maybe, my retailer is not even sure). I'll wait one more day. Tonight i'll play with my friend's copy, so it's not that bad; he's too addicted to GRAW live anyway, and he's not even into Rpg's.
Too bad i'm stuck at work for another 8 hours...

After a second night with this game Ive come away even more impressed. I had to stop just short of joining the theives guild because my g/f was whining about having not seen me. Aside from some performances issues/bugs/crashes this game is facincating. To be truthful a lot of these issues aren't very forgiveable given the scope of this game. I can only imagine how many bugs they took out. I can't wait till Saturday when I can waste an entire day on this game. lol

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
I bet some people in the UK get their hands on a copy today, my GAME store had them in but the guys won't break release date. Talk about retarded! Also really freakin annoying how they seem to be the only place in the land to sell the xbox 360 collector's edition.

Any UK'ers know if they have some kind of "we can sell after 6pm" rule or something?

How is the AI in this game? It was hyped quite a bit.
It's not as in-depth as was expected, but it's definitely better than anything I've seen in an RPG. I've seen NPCs read books at a table, get up to take a walk around their yard, and go back to reading. Also, instead of trying to punch you to death, citizens and shopkeepers will bolt out the door and get guards or other civilians to prosecute you and beat you down. They also have conversations with each other about topics, and while it's not scripted and they actually answer each other realistically, it usually follows "have you heard of [topic]?" "yes" "that is good" "have a good one" "you as well."

This game is fundamentally broken.

Yep, it stole all my friends away and broke our relationships. Thanks, Bethesda.

I'm such a n00b at this game. I hope I'm not so bad that I can't get much done. I only got to play for a little bit before I had to go to work. I just got out of the sewer and killed some fools who were hanging around across the water.

Throwing that flame is my favorite thing so far, so I decided to become I Battlemage. Hopefully I don't mess it up :(

I'm having awful stuttering problems with the game, every action I do it seems to pause for up to 10 seconds at times, and sometimes more. I've tried the trick to clear the game cache upon bootup (holding down A or any button whilst booting up the game) and it still has the skipping issues. This is the 360 version if you haven't gathered.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try? I've heard that some people have got it running smoothly without the hard disk connected, I don't know if I wanna try that though.

This game is fucking awesome, I bought it yesterday and I've played it for 10 hours or so but... I'm afraid of being the first one complaining but... ehhmmm...

The sound is CRAP. This game has the most compressed sound ever. You can feel the compression artifacts on EVERY F****NG sound of the game but the OST. Specially voices. People sounds "metalic", like crappy p2p low-bitrate cd-rips of the 90's.

Fuck "Hey yo!! Oblivion on a single DVD!! Blu-ray pwned!!!"-haters. This game should have been released in 2 DVD's just for HQ voices :\

Same here. :(

Is this a common issue? I've only just got the game and have noticed it stuttering frequently even before I actually got to any gameplay, which I still haven't because I've rebooted the game a number of times but to no avail. Is there a fix for this, or do I have to go to the hassle and get my copy exchanged?

I figured out my problem from earlier. Apparently you can only continue a quest if it is the "active quest". Well, maybe not for all quests, but I do know it was that way for the one I was having a problem with. Someone was supposed to meet me somewhere at a certain time of day - but he would never show up - not until I set the quest as my active quest at least.

Although, another individual would always show up, waiting on the same person I was waiting on. Weird.

I did the same and never found anything to do with the letter. The only quest I got out of the dungeon was after selling the statue that is found there (sells for 1000) I was approached by someone to find 10 more of them.

I am going insane.

I picked up Oblivion at about noon on Tuesday. I played for an hour, then went to the airport for a trip.

It's now 8 AM on Thursday, and I've read through the manual damn near 20 times. I've checked this thread every chance I've had for free time, but always skip through so I don't read too much.

I get back in the afternoon tomorrow. It really can't come soon enough.

2k games lied to me.

I haven't tried my copy but it appears the italian version is entirely translated (meaning voices too).
They have been telling me it would only be subtitled for months now...

Having the whole area, I've do the maths (seriously), and it's about 6h and a half to run all along the perimeter :D

You did the math and estimated, or you actually did it?

I think you would have to actually do it to prove anything, and also - that would be skewed from running into baddies along the way.

I heard it only takes about 10 minutes riding a horse until you hit invisible walls which will turn you back to that big imperial city. I hope that's not true...

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I've played about 10 hours without any sort of bug (fingers crossed). That's some sort of Bethesda record for me.

Just as an example of how impressive the scripting is to me. Yesterday I completed the Paranoia side-mission in Skinard
which involves a mentally insane resident who believes his neighbors are watching him. He'll ask you to follow them around but it doesn't take long to figure out he's imagining things. You can either set him straight or play into his fantasies. I played it straight until he was convinced I was part of the conspiracy (several days later) and tried to kill me. I took his key and rifled through his house, finding a desk where he had been writing notes about his neighbors and me. I have the strategy guide, so I decided to let myself read about this one mission. Turns out that the variables are incredibly vast depending on how you play him off. Apparently he could have hired me to actually kill these residents. Barring that, there's a point where he runs off saying he "can't take this anymore", and goes home to grab his battle axe (which I also found upstairs) to kill the other residents. The thing is, he'll just rush out and try to murder them until he is stopped or the guards as part of their natural routines put him down. If you make it into his house later, the number of notes on the desk are changed based on what transpired in the mission.

That's awesome. And that's just one podunk mission in a city. "Radiant AI" or whatever, that sort of level of gameplay makes this one of the most interesting rpgs I've ever played.

i don't think you'll find many bugs in oblivion... it looks like they really polished this sucker

both versions of morrowind crashed for doing trivial things... oblivion has been smooth sailing... so much in fact that i'm actually not afraid of not saving for hours :)

I've found a couple so far. The repeating lockpicking sound has happened to me 3 times now.

I did the math with an estimated speed wich I not remember and the official terrain data. It was a couple of months ago.

Anyways, I'm not trying the challenge, no way :lol

Eso76, what about text? Is it italian ONLY, or does it switch to english if you change the language in the console settings? I really need to know ASAP, as my copy is waiting for me in Italy. :)

I got a chance to play more Oblivion last night, and I'm just totally getting sucked into the world. I can't believe how fast time flies when I'm playing this game. I sit down at 6:30 PM and the next time I look at the clock, it's already 9 PM.

Anyway, my thief character is coming along, although I haven't done any real "thief" activities yet. Mostly started the main quest, and have since been exploring Imperial City and clearing out a few dungeons. I finished off all of Velverin except for a final door with a lock rated "hard". I ended up breaking too many locks trying to get it to open, so I saved it for a return later. It's the door just beyond the Necromancer's chambers for anyone who has done it. Hope there is something good past that damn door! :)

When I quit last night, I was exploring the country side some, and fighting mudcrabs and wolves, which are both pretty easy to take out. I'm third level, and trying to decide if I want to continue this character, or go back and create a different one before I get too far along.

Very impressive game. I'm loving every aspect of it. The graphics are awesome, and some of the lighting in the dungeons is beyond compare. Can't wait for the weekend when I can really put some time into it.

did i forget to mention that the clerk at Best Buy was so annoyed at me price matching that she neglected to even look that i was trying to get the collectors edition instead of the regular one. so all in all i got the CE for 40 bones.....kick ass

If I'm not mistaken, that door just leads you back to the beginning so you don't have to backtrack. There should be a key in the Necromancer's chamber that unlocks it.

This is true, I think the key is laying right beside the chest of goodies in the Necro's chamber.

I made a killer loot haul last night in a dungeon, it was off the main road between Bruma and Chorral, called "Smuggler's Cave" or some such. Nearly every chest had a magic weapon, ring, or armor in it!

Anyone notice the load times in Chorral when entering the city or leaving a house within the city are exceptionally long? Wasn't like that for me in Bruma or the Captial, but in Chorral it takes like 20-30 seconds to leave a building or enter the city.

Saw something funny while I was there, though.
If you've listened in on people, you'll know there's a wierd family with some dogs. Well, I stumbled into their house and it just so happens the dogs were running crazy through the house and the man of the house was trying to PUNCH the dogs! I was like, wtf?, but the dogs just ran out the door and he stopped being aggressive. Good for a laugh.

I did this same mission. I had saved just before it and had about 5 different outcomes to it. I don't have the hintbook, so I didn't know that he could take the axe and try to kill the "spies" himself, but I had him hire me, I had him turn on me when I told him that he was being paranoid, I turned him into the guards and let them track him down and kill him, etc...

The AI is really something in this game. Almost every mission seems to have this level of variables built into it too. Major characters can die in the course of a mission, affecting the outcome, but not affecting your actual completion of the quest.

I have a quest about getting into the Thieves' Guild. Is there a way to murder someone without it getting a bounty placed on your head? I know that if you kill someone and text appears saying that unseen forces saw it, that means the guards saw it, but I've tried killing innocent people in the wilderness, and as soon as I returned to town, I've been arrested. :-|

I even killed the innkeeper in Hackdirt, which doesn't have conventional guards, only to be attacked by residents of the town. I didn't get the text message and I escaped /killed them, but still got arrested when I set foot in a proper town again.

Doesnt shit like this really hamper the entire thief thing? Sounds kinda lame not being to do anything because apparently, God is watching you.

Was that what you were trying to do? Have them price match the CE version to what CompUSA was selling the regular edition at?

No, unfortunately you can't un-knock an arrow. I usually just shoot the arrow into the ground or into a nearby tree or trunk & pick it right back up again. The only bad thing about this is that if the bow's enchanted, you lose a charge.

I hope not... I have been playing a thief so far, and it's tough to a degree because I am mediocre in combat (though I have good marksmanship skills).

I am hoping that the payoff comes when I get into the guild and am able to sell all of my stolen items. That's the whole reason I don't want to get arrested, actually... It would be a shame to lose everything I've stolen.

If I get enough cash to buy a house, and stick my stolen items in there, does anyone know if they get confiscated when I get arrested?

Ahh..good to know. No need to go back then. I searched high and low for a key, but couldn't find one, must have just missed it somewhere.

I made quite a good loot haul last night myself. More gold than I expected to have at this point. Now I need to invest in some better weapons and armor if I can find someone selling anything decent.
