Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Holy crap, it's amazing how deep this game is. Some time ago I was pillaging a ghost ridden temple to get ectoplasm, and happened upon an Ayleid statue that I could take. Seeing the value of the object, I figured it would be perfect to sell.

About five minutes ago, a messenger gave me a note, asking that I meet his master in the Imperial City. Apparently, the master heard that I had recently sold an Ayleid artifact, and wanted to speak with me regarding it.

It's amazing that if you really don't scour, you'd miss a lot of quests.

FYI, Ive been storing my loot in the pirate ship for the past 10 game days and I haven't lost a nickel. I think Im going to keep everything I steal in that chest till I can start getting fair value for the stuff.

OK, so I got vampirism and I'm almost done with the quest to cure it. But I'm having just one wee little problem:

WHERE THE HELL CAN I FIND GARLIC?! I've gotten everything else, gotten all the "tougher" ingredients. What should theoretically be the easiest to find is completely eluding me, though. Actually, I have three cloves which I *did* buy from merchants, but those have been a rare find. I've been to every city and every alchemical/general trader that I can think of. Is there a place or farm somewhere that it grows at?

I stole all the garlic I needed for that quest from Weynon Priory off of Jauffre's desk and shelf.

alright, i'm just going to start over. seems like a pure-ish thief isn't very rewarding to play. dungeon loot quickly becomes better than the stuff you can steal, and moreover i suspect that i could steal most of the stuff i've stolen without high sneak or security levels. i really like sneaking up on enemies, but the 6x backstab bonus doesn't compensate for for my character's combat weaknesses. i think a thief needs alchemy or magic to fill the gaps, but i find alchemy tedious and i don't have the stats for magic.

i think i'll make a fighter who can sneak just well enough to handle thieves' guild quests. i've only done a handful of quests, so the only thing i'll miss is all the stuff i've filled in on the map.

Fighting a vampire conjurer is intense. Because he's always running away from you and depending on his summoned monster, but if you get close enough, you might catch the disease. I was just football tackled by a scamp!

I did most of the thieves guild quests with a sneak of 15-25 without any problems.

You have like 3 days or something to do a simple cure disease after contracting polyphoric hemophilia, btw.

I'll try again: has anyone found a place to buy Fortify Skill magic? I keep finding loads of Fortify Attribute but I'm not interested in that. I've already tried Anvil's Mage Guild (the place for Restoration) and most chapels, but found nothing.

I've found a nice wraith soul to put into my item, but I still need the spell effect...

Speevy: Just get up close, kill him, and gulp down a Cure Disease potion.

drohne: I don't find alchemy really tedius, personally, since it takes like 2 minutes to whip up a big batch of a BUNCH of potions and the ingredients are all pretty cheap. I *do* agree that there's no real reason to rob stores because they don't have anything worthwhile (that's both good and bad), I do like to break into people's houses and steal lots of ingredients for alchemy.

I'm mostly pure thief, except I have Restoration and Illusion magic.

You can really go crazy with alchemy once you collect a lot of ingredients. More than likely you'll just make some simple restore fatigue person, but you can sell those for 10 GP a piece.

Evilore is right. This game feels different from Morrowind, but I can't stop playing it. I'm at level 6 now, so hopefully when I reach level 10 I can start seeing some more powerful weapons around.

The stores never get anything worth anything?

Boo Bethesda. I remember wandering into a new town in morrowind and my jaw dropping at the one or two treasures the weapon shop would have.

That's not true either. It's just prioritized differently. You'll find a special weapon or armor in certain shops, like an enchanted item that costs an insane amount of money.

The real over-the-top stuff is in the mage's guild though, since they sell spells you can't possibly use until much later.

In many ways, I think the difference between Oblivion and Morrowind is that they've made playing as a magic user much easier than anything else, IMO.

What do you mean "prioritized differently"?

Do the items scale or not?

Oh yes. I never said otherwise. But that doesn't mean you can't get a sword that is overpowering for the enemies you're likely to fight. You just have to look for it.

"The stores never get anything worth anything?"

That's not what I mean, I mean the stores never have anything lying around for a thief to steal that's worth much. Which is both a good (for balance) and bad (I'd take even a lame barely enchanted dagger just for the fence, but outside of getting the sneak and security practice, no real benefit) thing.

BTW, has anyone had any luck with that cache reset fix?

I stopped at my parents house for a bit today and checked out my younger sister's progress in the game (she's obsessed with Elder Scrolls) and was shocked at how much slower her loading was. The map loading was around 2-3 times longer than what I've experienced and there was a lot of odd pausing in the menus. She didn't seem to notice anything, but I'd like to fix it.

I've tried holding "A" from both the dashboard and starting up fresh. The loading remains long.

Any ideas?

It just brings up a message that says "it's against the rules to loot a corpse in arena battles." I only tried it once, just for kicks. I'm not sure if you bypass that message if you repeatedly attempt to steal from corpses.

EDIT: I just cleared out the haunted house, and the whole thing is fixed up, and ready to use. That's pretty awesome, as I'm now able to store stuff I don't use often but want to keep, without worrying about people pilfering it.

Hooray for owning a house!

Ok, sorry, yet another difficulty question from me:

I'm trying to do the third part of the first town mission of the main storyline:

I'm level 16, and I'm just wondering if it's supposed to be this hard or if my character is just chronically flawed. At the part where you storm the basement of the church, there are 2 of those older dinosaur things, 1 big frost elemental and 1 of those dragon on two legs things. The guy I'm escorting dies almost immediately, and I'm forced to run back into the chapel and fight the monsters as they zone in after me with the help of the people in the chapel. Then, in the next part, I go outside with two guard guys. There are 3 of those dinsoaur things (the older kind, not the runts), 1 ice elemental, 2 fire elementals and 1 of those walking dragon things. The two guys I'm with die right away, and I'm forced to zone back into the chapel basement to fight the monsters. I pecked my way one at a time through the rest of the area, always running back to the main courtyard after aggroing the monsters.

Now, I just opened the main castle gate and there are so many monsters that came out it's ridiculous. 4 dragon guys, an ice elemental and 2 older dinosaur things. The main guy is knocked unconscious immediately, and all guards are dead in seconds. Again, I'm forced to zone back into the main chapel and fight the guys.

This is kinda do-able, but is the quest supposed to be so hard that you have to zone into another area, and wait for the monsters to zone after you 1-2 at a time to kill them? Are people able to take on 7 powerful monsters at one time in an area (without zoning) when their characters are at level 16?

And, a basic question: How do you do crowd control when being attacked by two-three monsters? I can't block all three of them with my shield. I can maybe paralyze one of them, and then run around backwards shooting arrows. How is a pure melee fighter supposed to deal with these situations?

EDIT: Also, please don't tell me to turn the difficulty down if it's too hard for me. The game is on average difficulty, and I intend to keep playing at that. The game was apparently balanced to be played at this difficultu. I'm just wondering if everyone is running away and zoning when they get aggroed by three things, fighting the monsters a few at a time as the come through the zone.

Is there a way to keep magical weapons from losing charge? I'd love to not hit the mage's guild every time I swing one 40 times

I just had this wonderful little quest line in Cheydinhal.
I had to find evidence against a corrupt captain. Anyway, I did, and he was thrown into jail and the quest was done. Since I had nothing better to do, I went into the barracks to go see him. "Come to gloat, have you? You'd better hope I never get out of here." THIS GAME RULES!

Speaking of phat lewt, I've heard that there's a
Ring of Nighteye
. Anyone have this or know where it can be found?

40 hours to finish the MAIN QUEST? Wow. I was almost thinking that it wouldn't be that long considering all the other gameplay there is..

In case nobody answered you... the Ring of Nighteye is in a average locked chest in Umbra's lair (if you know where that is).

If not, go tot he old bridge and nearth North up the road. You'll come across some ruins that are right on top of the road. She is at the end of those. You'll need to be at least level 8ish? or so for it to appear, I think. I've done the quest at earlier levels with other characters and it hasn't been there.

Also, the main quest is nowhere near 40 hours long. Ten tops, unless you do ALL the oblivion gates, which could then bump it up a tad (they only take a few minutes unless you absolutely go over every inch for loot). Depressingly short, actually, but it isn't as if there is a shortage of other things to do.

Well once you wake up to find ghosts in your house, you go downstairs and find a tipped over vase. Inside is a skeletal hand with a diary entry in it. Take the diary to Velwyn and he agrees to help you out. The only problem is, once he breaks the seal in the basement, he runs for his life because he's a total pussy. :p

Dont you join them by killing people? would you be able to go back after?

There's no going back once you join the Dark Brotherhood.
All you have to do is kill an innocent person and then go to sleep in a bed. The brotherhood will visit you in your sleep.

SanjuroTsubaki said:

Yeah, you gotta kill an innocent but you only need to kill one to get them to come visit you when you sleep. You can try to kill a guard but that seems to be more of a hassle than anything. The bums are no good because that'll put you in hot water with the Thieves Guild. I'd recommend some scrub that you've already delt with in a previous quest and you'll more than likely never have to deal with again, like that Argonian woman in Anvil that's been laying rotten meat over by her neighbor's basement. Or you could kill a NPC that you're on a quest with. It's up to you. After you make the kill, just remember to sleep in a bed or bedroll afterwards. That's how they approach. Do the job they ask you to do and get some awesome light armor as your reward.

And after joining, you don't need to stay in the Brotherhood. You don't have to do any of the contracts they offer after the initial one. But seriously, you'll be missing out if you don't 'cause imo they're some of the most fun and interesting missions in the game.....or at least so far. Plus if meet the bonus stipulations in their contracts you can get some really kickass weapons, armor, and magical doo dads.

...and because I'm in the mood to bitch about something. Why the hell is it that sometimes I can't retrieve my arrows even if I can plainly see the sticking out someone?

Because some of them are considered broken and you can't take broken arrows.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
What, exactly, does "Drain Health 15 pts for 6 sec" mean? Does that mean after the target is hit, it will lose 15 points of damage once every six seconds (totalling 90 health loss), or it will lose 2.5 health for six seconds, totalling 15 afterwords?

Also, if I hit an enemy with two of these, does it stack? Does it reset?

EDIT: Also, a second question. Soul gems- where can I get reliable empty ones? Also, if I buy a greater soul gem with a petty amount of soul in it, can I fill it up further? If a weapon doesn't need all the soul energy out of a sould gem, will it only take what it needs and leave the rest in the gem?

FlyinJ: Here's what Stevemeister said earlier.

"Protip: Alchemy rocks! Find & use all four apparatus pieces - Mortar & Pestle, Alembic, Calcinator and Retort. There are 5 different levels of these -- Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master, and you'll start finding higher level units as your Alchemy skill increases. The higher the quality of the Alchemical apparatus, the better the potions. I've found Expert level apparatus for sale Gilded Carafe in the Imperial City Market District on occasion, but Master level equipment can only be found as dungeon loot. As a Master in Alchemy with 3 Master apparatus and 1 Expert, I can make a Damage health poison that does 8 points of damage for 30 seconds and a potion that Restores Health 13 points per second for 43 seconds. Another thing to know about poisons is that they STACK. So if I hit someone with 3 poisoned arrows with that poison I listed above, depending on how much (if any) they resist the poison, I can be doing up to 24 points of damage PER SECOND for 30 seconds. For defense, Shield is good -- my Shield potions at this level and with my character's equipment is 49% for 148 seconds -- and with the enchanted items my character is wearing, one Shield potion gets me up to the maximum 85% armor rating. Really handy for melee combat."

I'm assuming it's per second.

I just traded in CoD and PDZ for this game... Im really nervous (havent played it yet). RPGs like FFX are my favorite ever, but Ive never played a game like this, so yea.

GS's review sold me on the game though.

PS. Someone should make a site where you upload a picture to it and it tells you what parameters you should make your character to

My favorite Oblivion moment (semi-spoilerish, but doesn't give the entire plot of the quest away):

It's the quest in Bravil where the lady's gambling husband has disappeared and an orc sends you off to a fort to recover some axe. When you get there, you have to kill your way through a maze to get out. Well, the last guy in the maze (for me, levl 4) was this Orc decked out in steel armor and too powerful for me to just wail on.

There's this pool right by where the Orc is, so I decide to jump in and lure the Orc into the water. Sure enough, he follows me in, and I jump out of the water. Apparently he got caught on something because he never came out. Drowning death FTW!

But when I left the building, the game locked up (an AI event that was supposed to happen, didn't) so I had to re-do it. This time I couldn't repeat my previous feat, so I let him chase me into another part of the maze where there's these traps that shoot arrows out of the wall. Not only did the Orc take a lot of damage jumping down from the ledge (no damage to me since I'm an Acrobat), but he got flailed by the traps and I took him down in like 2 hits.

Is anyone else having trouble with the guards seemingly wanting to arrest you for doing absolutely nothing wrong?

From Bruma to Imperial City, guards were ok with me. I talk to one civilian and start his quest. I see a guard who's horse is dead (don't know what happened) and he wants to arrest me for breaking the law when I walk up to him to talk to him. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID.

I tried loading a save just before that incident and they did the same thing. They don't run up to me or anything. I have to actually talk to them to say, "Stop, you're under arrest!"

Very strange. I'm playing as an Imperial and not as a Redguard. WTF?

RegularMK said:

Hmm..I thought I already answered this but searching my name tells me that I didn't. I must've closed out first or something.

Anyway, heres what you need to do

Make sure you have the note ON you. Dont' just read it when you're inside, actually take it (X on the x360) and bring it to him. He should then say he feels guilty and agree to help you out.

BTW, if you're a mage, like me, it would help to bring some sorceres potions with you.

Hope that helps.

Did you throw an object at someone? One time I got arrested for throwing a steel pitcher at a woman in a bar. I didn't think I could do time for that.

Just got a summon Daedroth spell. He rocks big time. Sorry puny mountain lions and brown bears, it's PAIN TIME for you!

Also came across 3 necromancers at once. Jebus! Thanks to the nearby lake I was able to take refuge there, with the Buoyancy spell while I healed myself, then go back and summon my new pet. :D

No. On my way to Imperial City, I raided a cave or two and a ruin with some bandits in it. I killed about three of those killer death fish in the lake and that's it. Nothing bad at all really.

Like I said, they don't run up to arrest me like I was pick pocketing and got caught or I swung my sword at someone. I have to actually walk up and talk to them.

Edit:

This happened when I arrived in Bruma too. In that case, I really didn't do anything wrong because I had just completed a quest, killed a few wolves (which attacked me first) and went straight over there without fighting any bandits or anything.
