The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- First Gameplay Trailer!

I pressed the button, something awesome happened.

Apparently Bioware was right. Just about the wrong game though.

Also, a note on the water, if you check the trailer, especially at the water mill and stabbing scenes, it actually looks good (for the snippet seen). I think its more the rapids look that's through it off, though in HD, I thought it looked somewhat decent.

I think you're right.

Personaly I think Fallout 3 was a top notch game in which Bethesda actually delivered a decent storyline and better yet, an actually good dialogue system. You may not be interested in the setting though.

Not the dialogue system, but Fallout 3's dialogue itself, the content, I found cringe worthy.

Although the system wasn't perfect, it was like a wiki, I don't think Bethesda games have had good dialogue since Morrowind. It's probably got something to do with switching to all voice acting for all the NPCs.

I am surely going to get the soundtrack for this game the minute it becomes available. I already have the Morrowind and Oblivion soundtracks and they make me so happy when I listen to them. Jeremy Soule is a great composer/producer.

Suddenly, I want Daggerfall on my iPad. "Climbing Mode." I forgot all about that. See that city? Fuck dealing with the guards, just climb the wall and sneak in.

Good times.

You have no idea how much I've wanted a portable Arena and Daggerfall.

Fucking Bethesda, don't they see? My money is yours if only you would deliver.

The games are free to download from the official website! Just grab a port of DOSbox for whatever system you want to play them on and go go go!

Son of a bitch, it cannot be unheard. :p

I never really played Arena and Daggerfall. I have them both installed, but the awkward controls keep turning me off. Is there a way to turn on mouse look in Daggerfall, because I haven't found it yet. :(

I just realized that I'm going to have to save up for a new computer if I want to be able to run this. I'm about half-way from a decent Alienware...but I'd rather build my own beast

Never played Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

Saw this trailer this morning.

Now I have a massive want to build a new computer before November 11, 2011. GOTDAMN.

/Fighting/FPS/RPG but not Elder Scrolls player

Whoa, thing sure got real after the events in Oblivion. Going through that Lore forum on bethsoft forums.

The info we have is from the Infernal City novel, which takes place 40 years after Oblivion, and thus 160 years before Skyrim. Here's what's mentioned in the book:

-with the end of the Septim line, the Empire fell completely apart.
-with the loss of imperial support, the Mages Guild (and I would presume, the Fighters Guild) also fell apart.
-a warlord named Titus Mede managed to capture the Imperial City and crown himself emperor. By the time of the book, Mede had just managed to reunite Cryodiil under his rule.
-Mede replaces the Mages Guild with two new organizations: the College of Whispers and the Synod.
-a good chunk of Morrowind is destroyed when Vivec's enchantments holding the Ministry of Truth frozen in time finally fail, leaving it free to crash into Vivec City, which causes a chain reaction that causes Red Mountain to erupt. The surviving Dunmer flee the province, many fleeing to Solsthiem.
-the Argonians of Black Marsh, seeing Morrowind's weakness, decide to strike back against their historic oppressors, and invade southern Morrowind.
-Elsewyr falls apart into independent city-states, after someone assassinates the Mane.
-Summerset captures Valenwood, forming a new Aldmeri Dominion.

From what we've been told since Skyrim was announced, it sounds like, in the time between the book and Skyrim, the Empire managed to retake Skyrim, which lasted until the High King of Skyrim dies, triggering a civil war in the province.

This is a feature I really wish more RPGs would use. It's so conducive to thief/rogue characters, yet it's never done.

Nice find, Dresden! I have the book, but i's been over a year since I read it, so I don't remember all the details. I'll probably go back and read it again. I also hope the sequel comes out before the release of Skyrim

"Lord of Souls: An Elder Scrolls Novel" is coming out this September.

There's so many great tidbits in that book. The birth of the city of Ione, the Thalmor, the Argonians taking revenge against the Dunmer, Vvardenfell getting nuked... Keyes really took the TES lore in an exciting direction with this. I loved how the fall of Morrowind was a big plot point. I also loved how we got a look at Argonian politics in Black Marsh.

Yeah, it's in the options somewhere. Been a while

Huh, is this about the new book, or the Infernal City? Either way, sounds like something I'd like to read.

Oh sweet! Thanks for the link! I'll be purchasing that when it comes out, for sure!

I enjoyed The Infernal City. I had trouble putting it down. It has a very interesting plot direction. I wonder if we'll be seeing the effects of the books' events in skyrim. Would be pretty nice to go around hearing NPC's talk about a mysterious floating city from the past.

I hope so. Who knows what'll happen, though. For all we know, Umbriel causes another Dragon Break.

Make some magical LAMs to use. :)

So I have to say I'm impressed with the look so far, it feels completely different from the previous tech. I apologize as it's been discussed before, but can anyone tell me anything about the tech (is it all internal, parts licensed like say Havok, etc)?

Read this. Should help you with your question.

Third-person view and you'll be fine.
I was never a big fan of 3rd person view in any of the Elder Scrolls games or Fallout 3...It just felt too awkward. The animations are obviously one thing, but just the fact that the game was developed for first person made it difficult to play 3rd. Everything was stiff in terms of camera positioning. Itwas stuck to the characters back which caused a miriad of problems. I know it could be turned and whatnot but it still wasnt good for control. Even if they improve the 3rd person aspect for Skyrim, I won't be using it...not often, at least. Maybe if I just want to see the character in some armor and in the environment, but definitely not for game play. But that's just me

If that is how the game is going to play then I'm afraid I'm going to get dizzy and sick.
You mean the shaking sprint-camera at the start of the film? Later on in the trailer you can clearly see the "floating head"-style of the previous TES games returns. :)

You know what else has been missing in the past Elder Scrolls games? Children! This series has so many towns and cities for us to explore, but not one of them has a child. Who is going to succeed that baker after he passes away? Who will be the new recruits for Tamriel's army? These people can't live forever. It always would be nice to see children running around the cities playing tag or hide and seek or whatever it is the children of Nirn play. Would also make an excuse to do search & rescue quests for the fighter's guild. Just a thought.

Oh! And also, what if the characters, actually changed clothes once in a while? It gets really redundant seeing the same person in the same set of clothes throughout the entire game.

There's kids in the game. They'll be used in random Radiant quests every once in a while.

I hate having to say this, as I accidentally double-posted in this thread just a few days ago, but there's an edit button. Use it.

Also, change your avatar if you want to keep it, 90x120 is the maximum.

Maybe too much texture work? I don't know..But I recall Fallout 3 having children! Mabe the didn't include them before for moral reasons...Or they were just being "lazy". :)

There's a great mod for that for Morrowind.
But that's unsurprising, there's a mod for pretty much anything for Morrowind.

If I ever consider getting a tatoo, it'll be of that emblem. Not because it is associated with this game, but because it is such a damned cool design of a dragon

Well, they already have a bunch of various clothing in the game. They could just make the NPC's wear different sets at different time intervals. And as for morals, that makes sense. But since it was done in Fallout 3 without any major hit from the media, so I don't see why they shouldn't include kids.

Indeed. I am so happy that Bethesda encourages modding.

I remember the Guards changing clothes in Oblivion, though that was very basic. When an off-duty guard went to sleep, he'd change his outfit from the city watch uniform to something simple.

They probably figured it was too much work for Oblivion to put in kids: they had to get used to the new console architecture and everything.

I'm not a native English speaker (figures from my terrible writing on the forum ;]), can someone check if my transcription of the narrator is correct and fix the bolded?

"You should have acted. They were already here. The Elder Scrolls told they'd return. Their defeat was merely a delay. For the time after Oblivion on(ly? ward?). When the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood. No one wanted to believe. Believe they even existed. And when the truth finally dawned, it daunted with fire. But there's one they fear. In their tongue it's Dovakhiin - Dragonborn!"

Don't ask why I need it.

Kind of sad that I know it by heart already, but I'm so incredibly pumped about this game, I've been watching the trailer way too much.

Congrats on the new avatar, wit3tyg3r.

Hopefully we'll get more scary quests in Skyrim, I loved those in Morrowind and Oblivion. Haunted houses, abandoned keeps. The quest where you get bitten by a vampire (for the first time) in Oblivion was awesome.

It would be cool if Bethesda decided to include more mounts in Skyrim as well. A dragon would be mondo bodacious, but I wouldn't mind if we could domesticate and ride other wild animals. I'd love to ride an overgrown mud crab into battle.

I don't think that's completely right. At least I'm pretty sure it's "dawned... it dawned in fire", not "dawns".

I don't remember that. I don't think I spent much time in a guard tower.

Thanks! and thanks to DieNgamers for making the job easier for me by providing the image.

I remember the fist time I got the vampire disease. It was such a pain to get the ingredient to make the cure as I would only have a few minutes to travel until the sun rose.

Gigantic Mud Crab would be epic. It would be great if they include large scale battles too, instead of the small packs of guards they called an army when you battled at the final Oblivion gate. I wanted to see an onslaught like Lord of the Rings. Hordes of daedra against the entire army of Cyrodill...OK maybe not THAT large...I will always continue to dream of what I want.

I agree with Ghaleon. While I won't begrudge your desire to have a buddy follow your every footstep, I hope you won't begrudge my desire to stab them through the eye-holes.
