The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

I use the 360 controller and haven't had an issue...I read on the reddit breakdown of mods that that just makes it easier for KBM...

Or am I thinking of something else?

Downloaded LOOT, when these mods install I will play with it...YouTube is at the point where I'm at. Thanks!
A lot of mods use SkyUI to change settings, so you need it period.

Uh, it's good at organizing your inventory, and adds features like being able to change your arms or armour loadouts with the click of a button, quickmenus, searchable menus, categories, sorting, favourites, &c.

Welp...I think I have ruined my save yet again through sloppy/lazy mod installations.

So...I guess I'll just have to start over...

Probably for the best. The scripts that are running must be running wild all over the place.

There's a savegame cleaner out there now, have you tried that?

Try the cleaner, and also try sleeping for 31 days in your house. That fixed a problem I was having where the game would crash everytime I enterd a certain area.

Okay, I feel dumb...

I installed NMM and downloaded several mods and I'm not sure if I have to do more to install them or not but I don't think any of them are working. What am I doing wrong?

I bought Skyrim vanilla on steam, I even downloaded the High Res Texture pack for free and I don't really notice anything with that.

I'm on Ultra High everything and it's running buttery smooth, but I feel like I did something wrong here.

(EDIT)
Oy, I have ot double click the mods to make the X a checkmark.

Use WryeBash! It will save you so many headaches down the road!

I'm curious, there's quite a few mods that change vanilla armors to work with body replacers. Would the replacers not work with vanilla armor, or would there simply be minor issues that the modded armors fix?

They should work, but you wouldn't get any of the aestetic benefits of using a body replacer.

Does anyone know a way to expand all categories in the Nexus Mod Manager app? It's really annoying to click on them all to see the mods.

I was gonna make a thread about it, but I guess this thread will do well enough. I want to play through Skyrim again, but this will be my first mod playthrough. I've tried some mods before, but they're mostly visual and weapons mods for a LOTR style playthrough I didn't end up finishing. I don't want to ask for a huge list, but are there any big essentials (besides SkyUI) that might be included on any "must have" lists? I can also try the reddit mod guides/lists since they seem pretty comprehensive.

And if anyone has any tips on either getting ENB to run smoothly or a good SweetFX preset, I'd appreciate it. My GTX 570 can handle ENB a little but I'd rather not have it since the preset I have/had almost halves my fps.

There's a search bar at the top, you can type something then delete it and it'll expand all folders.

Ah, I see. Thanks.

Also, I'm using Interesting NPCs, and it's pretty easy to tell them apart from vanilla NPCs, because they actually have personalities and their dialogue trees have a ton of conversation options beyond yes/no/exposition. Shit, the companions alone put the vanilla characters to shame. Each and every companion I've come across from the mod remains clear in my memory, while I don't remember nor give a fuck about any of the vanilla followers apart from Lydia, and only because she's the first housecarl you get. Reminds me of New Vegas, with companions having backstories beyond "I'm such and such, let's go adventuring".

Lots of people will tell you about graphic ones, but for gameplay...

First things first, grab all of the unofficial patches for Skyrim and all of it's DLC.

Next I recommend Character Creation Overhaul. This completely revamps the leveling system and character creation system meaning that characters feel specialized and unique. This is a personal choice for me, but it makes the game feel a lot more standard RPG versus default skyrim which was pretty much "you can master everything and do so easily."

Finally Civil War Overhaul. In their rush to get skyrim out, they dumbed down a lot of what they wanted to do with the Civil war aspect. The final version is very static and takes place over only a few predetermined battle grounds. In the original design, the civil war was dynamic, with battles taking place throughout Skyrim. You could die or lose a battle and it wasn't over, your side merely lost territory. You could directly go and intervene in a specific battle, or you could sit it out, etc etc. This mod restores all of that which makes the whole civil war just feel that much important to the game, and your role in it.

Nope. It just activates the dlc. You should be fine.

Ok thanks. That's cool.

Use WryeBash! It will save you so many headaches down the road!

I'm gonna try using WryeBash. I'm not great with computers so it's a bit over my head, but I've been watching YouTube tutorials and I think I'm getting the gist of it.

I just installed all the DLC and now I CTD immediately after opening Skyrim. So I figured I'd just start fresh by reinstalling Skyrim and using some new mod programs — namely WryeBash and Mod Organizer. Nexus Mod Manager is cool but I've heard good things about Mod Organizer and how it's a bit "cleaner" than NMM because of how it operates.

It's not that bad. There are plenty of pages that explain how it works, you just need to do a little bit of reading :D

Of course, that's the main hurdle to going down the modding rabbit hole. You have to actually read the descriptions of 100+ mods for compatibilities, etc.

I recently did a clean re-install of Skyrim, including updated versions of several mods from Nexus. I used NMM and LOOT while applying the mods one at a time. Things seemed to be working well until I hit Whiterun (or more specifically, the farm near Whiterun). Everytime I get near it, the game starts to seriously chug, resulting in either a CTD or a freeze.

Here is my mod list. I tried disabling a few things here and there (Sounds of Skyrim, Inconsequential NPCs), but so far have not been able to determine the cause or how to fix it.

I also used TES5Edit to clean the Update and DLC files, but left out any mods. They were verified clean by LOOT.

I also used PTDWrapper and followed the basic cleaning method.

And lastly, here's a log of my last crash after following all the steps above: http://www.mediafire.com/view/2bs795c593hnu9s/latest_error.docx

Have you added or removed mods from a current save?

Removed, never added. I tried making a new character and having them spawn at Whiterun to test it out, but that resulted in a crash too.

As far as I can tell, the chugging and crashing happens outside Whiterun, not within it, but I haven't tested that theory extensively.

From what I can tell, because I've experienced this too (Whiterun is famous to me for crashing), it's because you're running out of memory.

Use ENB and the SKSE memory patch to help alleviate the problem.

Well I finally finished. :) I switched from NMM to MO and learned how to use WryeBash. I installed my mods one by one, sorted them with LOOT, and ran them in Skyrim to make sure I didn't CTD. Then I made the bashed patch and everything is running smoothly as far as I can tell.

It's so beautiful.

Can I use Nexus mods (like model replacers, skin replacers, textures, etc) along with Steam Workshop mods? Workshop is what I use but it has a rather limited selection. Where would I place the Nexus files?

My problem is that I've decided that I want to do THIS kind of thing before I even start playing the game... which in turn makes "getting started playing Skyrim" a hell of a lot more daunting than it should be! :(

Thanks for that. Is there something for the reverse or should I just switch to the Nexus Mod Manager?

unfortunately not, there is no way to do the reverse. You could always download from the nexus, unpack the files and manually install the mods....heaps more work though. So just switch to NMM

Removing mods from a current save is generally a bad idea, because Skyrim still tries to reference the scripts used in the removed mods. Have you used the Save Game Script Cleaner? I used it, and slept for 31 days in my house, and after that, my crashes became far less frequent.

Use Mod Organizer, dude. It's leagues better than NMM, because each mod is placed in a separate folder, meaning you don't have to worry about overwriting shit. If two mods change the same thing, whichever is highest in the load order will have priority in the game. Plus, you can make separate profiles in case you fuck up your current mod selection.

Hah I do the exact same thing. On my first playthrough I was a warhammer-wielding heavy armor warrior badass. I named my character Leonidas and made him look like Gerard Butler from 300. This time I decided that I was going to be a pure mage (hence the Forgotten Magic Redone mod). My character is a female Altmer and I made her look like a witch with purple hair and lips, and scary dark face paint around her eyes.

My gf's sister is visiting our place right now so sadly I haven't had much time to play. I got to play a little yesterday and I really enjoy using magic so far. Using 2-handed weapons got really old by the end of the game on my first playthrough.

Is there a mod that makes Brynjolf stop saying "Sorry, lass, I've got important things to do. We'll speak another time" after you become the leader of the Thieves' Guild? Because if there isn't, I'm going to make one.

I think that's a glitch fixed by the Unofficial Patches?

I need help!

My trees and the draw distances are messed up. I have the Flora overhaul mod enabled, but it's acting all weird. There's also lots of pop-in too. Like rocks, trees, and other aspects of the environment just pop in. And I have all my visual settings in-game maxed out.

Here are the list of mods I have enabled.

Did you change your ugridstoload in your ini file ?

Default should be 5.

Got the chance to play again. I'd like to give the mod Forgotten Magic Redone a shout-out. I was going to explain it, but the description on Nexus does a good job: While other magic mods oftentimes introduce hundreds of different spells (which can be a bit overwhelming) this mod takes a different approach. Forgotten Magic Redone provides a smaller set of spells, that partially complement each other, and tries to keep them balanced and immersive. What makes this mod special is that the spells you use will level up with you and enable you to unlock some of the mysteries hidden within their scripts, bestowing new effects upon them as they grow stronger and stronger.

I love how it has a "perk" system for its spells. I got the novice shock spell as a random drop and I've almost used it enough to unlock my first perk. If you're doing a mage playthrough like I am, I can't recommend this mod highly enough. It really adds to the RPG experience.

Kind of a general answer but do you use LOOT (BOSS) and/or WryeBash? Both of those programs help make your modding experience smoother, so maybe that could help. I'm a noob modder though so that's all the advice I can give you.

No, I actually didn't change anything with the ini file. Was I supposed to?

And yes, I used LOOT to sort the files. It said to download TES5 Edit
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25859/?#content

Will that work?

No but changing that settings determines how many cells are loaded in game thus increasing the distance stuff is loaded in the area so if you haven't changed it thats not the problem .

Tes 5 edit is for cleaning your mods but i don't think that will help for this issue and it is best used only when you know what you are doing .

Also which version of SFO are you using ?

Latest versions require iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure= to be put to 6 or 7 to work properly in The skyrim ini file .

Ah, I see. I'm currently running the latest version SFO.

I tried it again after I added in the two ini adjustments, uGridsToLoad=7 and iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=7, along with the uGridsToLoad mod, but are still no changes.
