Got my copy this morning (Dublin) with the Strategy guide at half price. My god it's a work of art. No intention of using until I think I've done everything (fully knowing I won't have) but even just to have it, its fantastic!

I wanna ask something. I couldn't get myself into Bethesda RPG's. I have tried but I couldn't. I have played Daggerfall and Morrowind (on Xbox) but they felt like slow paced and boring. Especially Morrowind. I also couldn't get myself into Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Would I like this game? First person view is always a turnoff for me but does Skyrim do it differently than Morrowind?
You won't like it if you don't like those games.

Here are some brief impressions after playing for about 3 hours:

Character creation is pretty good but about par for the course for Bethesda. It is almost impossible to make a good looking male (human) character unless you want a manly Nord with a manly beard and it's nearly impossible to make them look any younger than 40 or a rough 30. The hair choices are laughably bad and it's hard to not look like a Native American if you pick dark hair. I am pretty satisfied with the final result but it took me a while and I had to get my wife to help me. She's an artist and extremely good at this character creation stuff. Her character looks like a fucking super model. I think it's much easier to make a good looking female character in this game.

I thought the opening sequence and the beginning of the game up to the first town was well done and wasn't boring at all. It was pretty exciting compared to the opening moments in Morrowind and Oblivion and the voice acting is leagues above either of these games.

The graphics on Ultra look way better than what I was expecting based on the impressions in this thread. Yes, the textures could be higher resolution but seeing the game in motion, it is easily the best looking open world game of this size and magnitude that I have ever played and it effortlessly trumps any past vanilla Bethesda game. Character animation is much improved and there are a lot of nice touches such as being able to actually read books by flipping through the pages and every piece of loot in the game being individually modeled so that I can rotate and examine them freely.

I'm getting a pretty consistent 60FPS although the opening sequences were mostly 45-50. A little bit of screen tearing here and there but nothing to complain about (yet).

Phenom X6 1090T @ 3.4Ghz
Vapor-X 5870 2GB
4GB RAM
1080P, Ultra, 8XAA, 16XAF, everything maxed, FXAA OFF, ini tweaks (shadows)

Up until 3AM and had to get up at 6:30AM for work. Going to caffeine it up and play this all night but man is this going to be a looooonggg day :(

Ended up switching to a pad pretty fast. This game was not designed with KB/M in mind, at all. Navigating the menus was a bitch, but it's pretty intuitive with a pad.

I despise the menus which are obviously centered around controller mechanics but other than that everything works pretty great on KB/M. For anyone else playing KB/M, make sure you do the ini tweaks to remove the acceleration and up the sensitivity once in-game. It's way too low on the default setting.

yep, all of this very nearly kills the game. i don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the ui.
Killed the game for me, and that's sad. I mean, I never liked Oblivion, but I'd take really bad LOD at launch over struggling with KB+M controls because they couldn't be asked to have a human test it.

I would like to add that I hope someone figures out the noclip console command soon. I got stuck on a pile of logs last night and if past games are any indicator, this will not be the last time. I will be saving furiously and frequently.

Fuuuuuuuck yes! I got the game. Last copy and all. When the cashier handed the game it was a huge relief. Installing it now.

Either way, I'll be getting a refund on my other copy.

Played for 5 hours straight and had a blast. Nothing like summoning up a zombie to distract a foe, while you go behind them with dual daggers to slit their throat.

One thing I'm unsure of is leveling in this game. I get to be better with shields, you use shields and all that. What I'm unsure of is how many things in the constelation's/perks can you max out or should focus on? I had plans to go Mage/Assassin or just full on mage, but I'm not sure if I can even focus on more than one tree of schools of magic.

Anyone know how many you can max by the max level ?

Bummed to hear about the ui issued, but just bought regardless. At least I can get started and then get some community fixes down the line. Letting steam install it while I'm at work and will play this afternoon. In the past elder scrolls games, I've always been more of a powerful melee character or a stealth ranged character. Think I'll give magic a shot.

You can choose a total of 50 perks, and each tree has about 11-16 or so perks to choose from, so you should be able to max out at least 3 trees. Also, you might not want to pick all the perks in a certain tree as you can specialise in certain areas, like concentrating on flames rather than frost or shock in Destruction magic, or swords over axes and maces in one handed weapons.

I've seen screenshots which looked like 3rd person, but then youtube videos in first person. Can you play in both, or is it only in certain sections? I think I'd prefer to play in 3rd person like Dark Souls but don't know if its allowed/optimal?

I have a quick PC question.

I was happy to see this morning that the game pre-set my graphics to Ultra however I was wondering are the high rez textures included in the initial steam download or are these a separate download?

thank you.

You can choose 3rd or 1st whenever you like :)

Is the D-pad actually used for something outside of menus? I keep clicking Left Stick (sneak) by mistake in combat, but the game won't let me rebind it to the D-pad. (PC version)

You can change viewpoints on the fly but third person is not recommended. I only use it to check out my character's equipment or take screenshots.

D-Pad is used for accessing the Favourites Menu (up or down will pause the game and let you scroll through) and your two Hot-keyed options. You select things to place in the Favourites menu from your main menu (B, or circle I assume). You assign the two Hot-keys after you've accessed the Favourites list with up or down on D-Pad. Hold left or right for a second and it will assign a 1 and a 2 to your two most favouritest favourites.

Assigning Bow to a Hot-key is cool because you can press it to equip and press again to unequip (reverting to whatever you were wielding prior). Assigning spells to the Hot-keys is a bit more annoying. The second time you press it, rather than unequipping the spell, it binds it to the second hand. This bothers me.

Guys, stop stressing about the keyboard/mouse controls and plug in a fucking 360 controller. It was clearly designed for it, and you should already have one at this point if you play PC games.

For those who played both Nehrim and started a bit on Skyrim, how do they compare? I'm especially interested in the world and landscape. That's what wowed me on Nehrim (and ruined my experience with Oblivion).

I much prefer the KB/M controls and they are actually quite good outside of the menus.

Also, don't rebind "R" to something like Sheathe/Ready Weapon or the "Take All" function gets screwed up.

I really enjoyed Nehrim, but this is a different beast in terms of landscape. I've played for 9 hours and have only really explored the South-East (I've probably seen 10% of the game world at most), but it's all been very rugged and Scandinavian so far. The world, however, is a lot more immersive than vanilla Oblivion. You'll like this game, it improves on almost all of Oblivion's flaws. Buy it.

I can't play first person games with a pad. I just can't do it. I end up fighting the controller so much the games just frustrate me to no end. Not to mention I tried the pad for a bit and kept going into sneak mode while in combat trying to move quickly. Me and pads do not get along very well.

Sorry, I'm playing a PC game on my PC. I guess good controls without a tertiary adapter might be just one of those outlandish expectations I have, though.

First person works largely the same as morrowind, however, the actual game feels good... Morrowind was a convoluted piece of shit... And it's gameplay mechanics were awful

Fallout 3 was pretty meh to me. I was excited to play it because hey, elder scrolls with guns! But it ended up being such a massive disappointment to me. I liked morrowind for what it was, it's atmosphere. I wouldn't say that the you would hate the game for sure, because it's pretty different to morrowind in almost every way. Sure you are in first person, but it's UI actually works well... Instead of having to read giant walls of texts for conversation, and navigating horrendously designed menus to get what you needed... You get right where you need to go and easily... More streamlined.

Not every NPC spoke in morrowind, and not everything felt alive. Plus in re to the gameplay... You're not sitting there struggling with rats for 20 minutes

I would say give it a shot somehow without buying it (through a friend if you can) because the differences Between morrowind and this are so huge they are almost 2 different games. The game is nearly as complicated in what you can do but everything is presented and designed so much better than it was in morrowind.

Though if you're the kind of person that hates open ended gameplay in general, it would be a turn off. Watch a stream of someone playing the game too... It will give you a good idea of the game for the most part, as long as who is playing isn't being incredibly boring.

The UI is bad, the controls are bad, mouselook is bad, sound is bad. Come on, guys. I'd be inclined to give Bethesda a free pass too, but doing so only establishes the bullshit double standard for 'expected AAA games'.
Sound is fine, the mouselook y axis problem is minor, controls (outside of mouselook) are perfect (as soon as you set iPresentInterval at least), and you have a point with the UI -- but that will be fixed by the community soon enough. Still, I just played the game for 4 hours and it didn't crash or even stutter once, and more importantly, it was extremely awesome.

Applying different expectations to huge open world RPGs than we do to linear corridoor shooters isn't "double standards" in a negative way as much as it is setting realistic expectations.

Even with the slight y axis problems, the game controls far better with mouse/kb than it ever could with a controller. (Once you eliminate the input lag and crank up the sensitivity)

So i beat the crap out of a chicken and got sent to Jail. Upon looking for my gear i couldnt find it!!

I found the Suspects Chest and the Evidence Chest and both are empty, bug? should i load a previous save ??

I do apply different standards, to a certain extent. I expect the game to have some bugs, some save issues, and quest items or NPCs to suddenly disappear. However, I expect interaction with systems, like player control and UI control, to be near perfect no matter what genre a game is.

Sounds good. I put in nearly 40 hours in Fold Valley alone in Nehrim just because it was so much fun exploring.

Wondering how easy it is to escape the law in Skyrim. I remember the most annoying thing about Oblivion is how a guard would chase me to the edge of Cyrodil for accidently taking a piece of cheese off a table.

So, did you set iPresentInterval=0? Before that I would have been right there with you screaming "unplayable!", but after doing that it actually feels better in terms of control than Oblivion.

I even got used to the UI more now, it's not that bad once you figure out all the things you can do with the mouse wheel and wasd. Still, I'm looking forward to a community fix regarding that.

so yeah this game is pretty tight, i just did this fucking awesome chain of quests that were together. it led me to this mountain fortress on the very end of the game, by the sea, it was awesome.

we were to assault a mountain fortress, me and some dudes. i spent the night before in a bar where there was just this awesome atmosphere of a bard singing, people talking, people drinking, eating, the scripted type conversations seemed to be logical and cool set up (like the barkeep calling from downstairs to her daughter to come) and such.

well then i met this badass girlie in the corner, telling me how she'd beat my ass and we'd bet on it. so we fight, i knock her out after an admitted huge struggle, and she is impressed and says any time i want company to smash some heads, she's down. So I bring this girl whose title is "The Unstoppable" or something cheesy with me to the assault, first to the carriage to the farthest city away, stay in the hotel, and begin the journey through the ice topped mountains and ridges to our destination.

on the way there was an imperial patrol with a captured Stormcloak, so we decided to stop up the way and set up an ambush. killed em all, it played out sooo sick looking, jumping from the ridge and stuff.

then we finally after a days march meet up with these clansmen, assault this mini fort thick with tough high monkeys elves, slowly our numbers dwindle until it's just the captain of the clansmen and the woman who i think i want to marry.....

this game is cool i supose.

hei, I tried googling this but found nothing..
Is there karma in skyrim?

I`m planing on making an asshole that murders people and
steals vegetables, but I dont want the whole town to
become hostile because I screw around.
Or conversation trees to wither down because I`m a dick.

Any sign of those things yet?

Huh? this all sounds scripted, were these AI companions? I hear they are terribad. How many were under your control? how did you decide to ambush them with the companions not just charging in?

That sounds amazing and I am only 3 hours in but I haven't seen anything like that level of control with the AI yet.

How is the bound bow?

If you've been spotted and cast invisibility will enemies still find you?

Any awesome summon spells?

Just looking for impressions on anything magic really.

UI is awful, sound is low, dynamic contrast can blow me, and the combat feels like a PS1 game. I guess I'm spoiled by Mount and Blade's amazing melee combat that this just feels so archaic. I guess I'll play some more to see some fat loots, and bosses (if there is any).

I will say this though, it runs better than Oblivion ever did.

Is there any dungeon footage floating around somewhere? Looks like the German version doesn't contain any English language files on any system, which is indeed a bummer, looks like I'll start looking for the easiest way to obtain a UK copy.
