So I wasn't a huge fan of Oblivion. I hated the leveling system for some reason.

However, I'm buying this simply to support people making games like this. It looks amazing, so I'm hoping I will enjoy it. :)

Oblivion's leveling system sucks, to put it simply.

Cannot wait to get the PC version of this and max it out with Sparse Grid Super Sampled AA. Gonna look SOOOO good.

Has it really been 5.5 years since Oblivion came out and I spent hours playing and modding it while rocking out to Tool's 10,000 Days? Wow. :|

23 hours in, I'm level 13 and am starting to explore more of the world now. I've only just reached another large city after Whiterun (the first city you go to), simply because there's so much damn stuff to do, and not just in terms of the abundance of quests you receive. Spent way too much time collecting ingredients, hunting animals, crafting items to make armour and weapons, cooking food, making potions, chopping wood, mining ore, etc.

I didn't believe the talk about the game taking around 300 hours to complete.

Now.. I'm not so sure. Wow. This is great news.

Guys I don't think you know how excited I am. I would pay $100 if I could just start playing it today... It's pretty much torture at this point having to wait until Friday.

How is the game's challenge level. It offers you so much shit to do, so many spells, weapons, skills, tactics - and none of that matters if the win button is run up to enemy and mash right trigger (360 ver obviously).

I'm not saying it should be Dark Souls level of difficulty, but hopefully normal mode provides a challenge moreso than other 'popular' games.

Would like to know this as well as whether the difficulty option is like FO3 or like Oblivion.

I've just opted to get some leather leggings, boots and straps, some bear fur and a solid iron helmet and wander around the woods until Friday.

There's definitely shadows on objects indoors, and the books do open them if you pick them up.

Also, cool little note about the houses you can buy, there's a book shelf that you can deposit books in and it automatically stacks and alphabetizes them for you :)

well you can adjust the difficulty and even in Oblivion, before they really fixed the scaling, you could make the game completely unforgiving. But for me, after a point it stopped being a challenge and became just cruel haha but that's just my own personal experience.

I don't remember how the difficulty options were in Fallout, but in Skyrim you have 'Novice', 'Apprentice', 'Adept', 'Expert' & 'Master' and the game defaults on 'Adept'.

At the default level the game definitely has a fair amount of challenge, and I got a definite sense of being in a lot more danger the further out from the first city I tried to push myself, which goes some way to explaining why it took me so long to get to the next big city (and the fact that I'm obsessively compelled to explore everything in Elder Scrolls games).

Praise the Nine. This was so frustrating in Oblivion. I was lucky enough to get the 11th off of work without asking. All day play here I come.

Hey Bootaaay, you can recollect arrows from fallen enemies right? Just wondering about confirmation of that, after hearing that arrows are apparently going to be rather "rare" in Skyrim.

Yeah that's how FO3's works (V. Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, V. Hard). Wonder if the modifiers are the same. FO3/NV used pretty tame difficulty setting modifiers compared to Oblivion.

When you say 'get' you mean steal right? Don't let the authorities catch you or you'll have to pay a fine to avoid jail. :)

Yeah, you can get arrows back from dead enemies, although like Oblivion you won't get all of them back (however, there is a perk that lets you get more than normal). And as for arrows being rare, I've never come close to running out (except after fighting a dragon), quite a few blacksmiths and random traders sell them.

Cool info mate. Does it give any indication of how the different difficulties affect the game though, like does 'Master' mean 2x health for enemies or something?

I've had this game pre-ordered on 360 for months now, and I have been on a blackout. How does the 360 version look?

I have a PS3 and a 360.
360 version looks great. Surprisingly great considering how big the world is. I haven't seen the PS3 version, but it sounds like everyone playing it is happy with it. Seems like either one will do you fine.

Looks like the perks add a lot of variety to the game. I see multiple playthroughs in my future.

Right.

Who else immediately goes for the highest difficultly?

I'll just go for hard difficulty, it's the perfect blend of challenge and fun for me. Make it harder and it becomes less fun. Make it easier and it loses the thrill of fighting things

Unless the game changes something beyond enemy count/health/damage I always keep it on normal or one notch up.

In FO3 and NV, those settings were just damage dealt and damage received modifiers pretty much. In FO3 you actually gained more XP on higher difficulties, which was removed in NV. Otherwise the damage dealt and received are altered in the range of 50%-200%, eg. V. Hard you deal 50% damage and take 200% damage, whereas on V. Easy you deal 200% damage and receive 50% damage. Oblivion's top end of the slider was actually quite a lot worse; you received 600% damage and dealt 16.6%.

Just seeing the shelf gets me hyped. Gonna search every nook and cranny of this monster.

How has the PS3 version been performing? Any freezes yet?

What changes when you raise the difficulty?

For some reason I just don't feel right bumping up the difficulty in an ES game, or any other RPG for that matter.

I've never tried but it seems like enemies would just get more HP and do more damage instead of becoming smarter, changing tactics or anything like that, so it just seems like an artificial difficulty bump which is probably just unfair on the higher settings. Unless its more like everything dies faster including you, that might be cool, anything that reduces the amount of random swinging and spell spamming would be good.

Interesting. If NickBreckon is around, maybe he can shed some light on the different difficulty settings. I'm guessing it would just be damage dealt/damage received modifiers as you described.

Been having a look on the UESP wiki for Skyrim.
Looking at the perk list I am really disappointed, 90% are boring and completely uninspired.

Fallout had much more interesting perks.

W - w - what. I'm not going to contest that Fallout didn't have interesting perks, but I feel that the perk system in Skyrim is just ridiculously cool. The only perk tree that I think is uninspired is Smithing (thankfully, it seems that you can improve armor without its tiered perk, just not craft armor of that tier, but still, regulating the entire perk tree to "maek ebony gauntlet" is =/ ).

They managed to make Restoration seem badass. I'm not sure what more you want!

Man I have such strong compulsions with these Bethesda games. When I played FO3 I made it my mission to collect every garden gnome in the world, then I placed them all around my house in Megaton so that they were all staring at me when I walked in the room. You can not imagine my elation when not only did I find like 20 garden gnomes at once (miniature ones used as chess pieces in a raider hideout), but they defaulted back to normal size when I dropped them. I think at least 40% of my total FO3 playtime was spent on this hunt. In conclusion, I hope Skyrim has garden gnomes.

Only the one freeze, when I was about 14 hours in. Had to reset the console. Other than that, it's been fine for me, barring a few minor graphical niggles like soft shadows stuttering and the occasional ground texture popping in. I wish they could have gotten the grass and foliage to spawn a bit earlier though, makes the repeating ground textures quite noticeable when looking out across a wide area from above.

Thanks for the impressions.

Are the conversations more like Fallout 3 in the game? I loved talking my way out of situations in Fallout.

Well if it's just higher HP and less damage with no XP boosts, then I probably won't touch it either.

XP in Skyrim is hitting things more often. Higher difficulty naturally ramps up your XP.

Speaking of XP: I've seen "rested" status pop up after sleeping in some streams. What does it do? I <3 Oblivion mods that allow for "rested" bonuses, so I am intrigued!

Agh, i noticed this in some of the videos and was really hoping it would be fixed. Guess not. Oh well, its not a huge deal to me but graphically it was the only issue that really bothered me. More of a pet-peeve than anything.

Huh, so... both, I guess. Interesting.
