The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

That sounds like a problem with your videocard. Try to get the latest beta drivers.

If that doesn't help, I guess it could be a bug with your particular hardware configuration? Check the Steam forum if it ever comes back.

edit: Oh wait, incorrect textures are appearing? You can try validating your game files by right-clicking the game in Steam > Properties > Local Files

I thought it might be, but it's only on certain textures.. textures that "embellish" the rest... so the floor and walls load up great and everything else in the environment.. but the spilt hay in the mead factory.. and the moss on certain walls in caves.. disappears and re-appears based on what direction i'm looking??? it's so mystifying... i can't play like this.. i've seen others post this same problem... and they just post again saying.. nevermind fixed it.. or ... "it went away" ... what on earth did they tweak?

Game runs fairly well for me. 40+ fps outside (generally 60, but it dips), 60 fps inside.

Max settings at 1080p
Tweaks in op (for eye candy)

i7 2600
8 GB RAM
6950 CF

Using Radeon Pro with alternate frame rendering.

Had to change audio settings to 41k, otherwise the menu would crash at game launch.

Still have a graphic glitch with the save/load screen flickering green/fade.

ini settings to change the fov should be taken out of the OP. They don't work.

Bringing up the console and typing "fov xx" where xx is the desired fov and without quotations, however, does work.

Can someone help me?? i'm about to give up in frustration ... I have textures like others have said .. .moss, hay etc.. on walls and floors that disappear depending on where i'm standing or looking... it's so distracting i can't play... anyone else have this?

I have this, been trying all day tweaks to get rid of it, no luck.

Steam validation didn't fix it =( I'm pretty upset.. it worked fine last night?? I've never been this frusterated.. it has to be a texture loading setting, or maybe interference with shadows due to the fact that it appears and disappears based on my angle towards the moss or hay or whatever...

Please Let me know if you find a fix for this.. PM me please... i'm dying here.. off work on a busy concert weekend and i can't play...

I have been having no problems whatsoever on an i7 930 @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 560 Ti, 6GB RAM running on Ultra settings with 0x MSAA (FXAA is on instead), 1680x1050 resolution. Turned off vsync and I have been running a program called Bandicam to limit the FPS to 80. My framerate rarely drops below 60, but at times it would shoot up over 300 indoors and the vertical sensitivity would shoot up with it. Capping the max FPS at 80 keeps the X-Y axes nice and balanced.

I can't believe it hasn't crashed once for me in 12 hours with a lot of alt-tabbing and heavy overclocks on both the CPU and GPU.

My game ran at about 50 frames everything max with no problems before it decided to fuck with moss textures and destroy my experience... If anyone can lend a hand to us suffering please do...

You might just be one of the unlucky people with an untested hardware configuration. It's not uncommon to see near launch. I'd suggest posting your hardware specs on the official forum to see if there are any similarities with other people in the same position.

edit: If you have an Nvidia card, recent drivers allow you to do a clean install very easily. Try that if you can. Try the latest WHQL set as well as the latest Skyrim beta drivers.

I've got two 5850's.. tried both crossfire and disabled... to be honest it was running great last night in crossfire.. whether it was taking any advantage of that I don't know... I've also run with RadeonPro... I have no idea... ugh...

Anyone here running on a 2010 Macbook Pro in bootcamp? I was originally going to get it for Xbox, but I hear that it's actually pretty well optimized for lower end PCs, so I just want to know how the performance is...

Try this.. if you are AMD that is.. seems to have fixed the weird moss and things problem.... Go into CCC enable adaptive antialiasing... override application control... turn skyrims aa to zero... enjoy...

I came here to ask about a Macbook Pro 2011 with the 6750M 1GB Vram and 4 gigs of ram.

How CPU heavy is the game? I have a shader unlocked 6950 2 GB paired with an old, old Q6600 @ 3.6 GHz and would like to know if and how much the CPU would hold me back. Oh, and is 4 GB RAM still enough?

I feel so old for asking this

I'm not sure which one caused it and I'm going through the process of elimination right now but one of these graphics tweaks is causing my game to crash every time I hit the screenshot key in Steam. The game just completely shuts down without any error messages or anything. I am also running FRAPS and using the same key for my FRAPS screenshots if that helps (F12). Anyone else getting this?

I get the same thing sometimes, the game just closes itself down with no message or anything.

I also took steam screenshots before this happened, I noticed in both times it closed down when I fast traveled or waited, so it's when the game autosaves. I took the screenshots like a good hour before the game crashed so it may or may not be that.

Going to play without taking a screenshot to see if it could be that.

anyone else getting random crashes to desktop? No hard lock up or anything... just quitting out with no warning... happening to me and a friend of mine too

My system: i7 2600k @ 4.4, 8 gig RAM, HD6970 running Ultra @ 1080P. Getting 60 solid indoors, outdoors is much the same except for a few areas like it drops to as low as 35-40 in Whiterun when I look down at the town after exiting Dragonsreach palace. Just realised I haven't used Steamtool to transfer Skyrim off my SSD yet so my load times are super-fast but I'll have to put it on my HDD sooner or later with mods incoming.

I'm also using the 360 controller but mine has a bit of drift in the right stick, which is pretty annoying when I go to lockpick and it insta-breaks my picks :|

Anyway, I've put in around 16 hours so far including an 8 hour session yesterday and 6 hours today and I haven't had a single crash or problem which is great.

Yeah, i've had two. Fucking annoying. Luckily i quicksave like a madman though, i guess

I am locked at 60 fps even with all the tweaks. Its quite frustrating knowing that you can afford the game to look a lot better but with no options yet......

it seems that the only place where the game dropped frames was intro. After that 60 fps locked 90% of the time.

I have a 6870, this didn't work :(

I love how none of the inventory hotkey prompts change if you customize your hotkeys. By love I mean hate.

Still don't know what button to push to drop an item into a corpse/container.

Any ideas on how to fix the wobbly x/y axis mouse bullshit, where y is faster than x? Even with

fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0200
fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0200

in skyrim.ini

They don't feel like the same speed

I can only assume thats a bug or the Nvidia beta drivers being shitty.
Definitely not normal performance, I have 2500k/4gb/gtx460 and it runs much better maxed out (4x AA).

So are we going to have an actual Skyrim Mod thread soon, it looks like the early stuff is just starting to come out?

I was thinking about this too, hopefully we get something like Ledsen's awesome Oblivion modding thread.

I'm always overly worried that new games won't run well on my PC, and I always feel like I'm taking a risk when choosing hte PC version over the console version. But once again, I'm pleasently surprised by how well it runs.

My setup is:

GeForce 9800GTX/GTX+
Core2Duo E8400 3.06Ghz
4gb Ram
Vista 64

I was running everything on recommeded settings yesterday (it auto-detected into Medium), and today I tried setting it to High, while just lowering the AA to 2x. First impression is that it runs just as good, but we'll see eventually.

I read somewhere that Skyrim is much more reliant on the CPU than the GPU, and I have a feeling that the CPU is my best component. So that could explain why it runs so well.

I have every setting set to maximum, with the exception of AA. I am using FXAA, because as weird as it sounds, I think the blurrier look that FXAA gives actually helps to blend some of the art together and give a smoother look. I can move it up to 4xAA before my frame rate really starts to take a hit, though.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2GHz
2 x eVGA GeForce 260 GTX (SLI)
4 GB
Windows 7
ASUS Xonar Essence ST
nVidia Beta Drivers v. 285.79 w/ dedicated Skyrim SLI profile...

Not the greatest rig, but pretty good. Overall, I would say I am hitting 60FPS about 95% of the time I am playing. I am extremely happy with the performance. I have to give it to Bethesda... they really pushed the visuals with Skyrim, and the engine can keep up! That means my computer is happy and I am too!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am running at a 1920 x 1200 resolution too!

Trying some console commands from oblivion..these ones work

tm - toggles menus
tcl - toggles clipping (and lets you fly)
tgm - god mode
fw [followed by a 5 digit hexadecimal number] - forces weather type, but I don't know the weather codes. Oblivion ones dont work
set timescale to [number] - sets the speed the sun moves with the background skybox (but not the clouds). Default is 30. For a 30 second long day/night cycle set to about 3000.
qqq - quit without going through menus

i5 2500k
8gb RAM
6950 2gb

Not noticing any drops running it on Ultra. Haven't measured the fps but if it's ever been below 40 I must be losing my edge. So far: awesome!

Running on medium/ high on MBP 2011 with little problems in third person. First person is another story. Is first person that more intensive?

E7400 (OCed to 3.5ghz)
4890 1gb (11.10 + ATI tray tools)
4gb ram

I was expecting Skyrim to run slightly slow on medium settings.

I'm running it with the tweaks mentioned, all settings on max apart from shadows (high), x8 AA and x8 AF - it runs flawlessly.

One question though - where is the HDR and bloom options?

Is it just me or does your framerate take a dive when looking at Whiterun from a distance?

AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.6ghz
4GB RAM
GTX480 1.5gb

Using ugrid at 9

Anyone know how to store items if you rebound the default keys? I'm on a quest that requires it, and nothing I push stores an item.

Unfortunately you can expect a lot of that, I'm guessing it's mostly due to the obvious reason that the game isn't really optimized to have X amounts of cells in a given direction loaded fully.

edit : anyone figured out actual working SLI bits/drivers?

Should be your ready/sheathe button.

Yeah, doesn't work :/

edit: jesus christ, until I rebound it to default key it wouldn't work. did they even play the pc version? god forbid you want to customize your hotkeys.

I'm loving this game, but everything about the PC version is pissing me off every few minutes.

That's because you have ugrid 9 on, it's trying to render the city even when your not near it.

Also lol, I'm guessing the "SLI support" in these latest nvidiadrivers is nothing more than them just slapping the bits from Fallout 3 and NV onto the Skyrim profile. Good going that sure did the trick.

I agree. I really think that people in this thread are not giving them enough credit. You have to realize that basically no one else does what Bethesda does (I guess the closest recently would be Risen, and that also required a high end system).

Maybe some people that have really good systems but performance issues run into some sort of bug, but my experience and that of a lot of other posters seems to confirm that the engine is capable of producing really good results for many combinations of hardware and settings.

Anyone else annoyed at how the dynamic day/night cycle is with regards to the shadows moving across the ground? It's really jarring, I mean they move 1 foot and stay still for 10 seconds and then they move another foot right infront of your eyes, combine that with the extremely blocky shadows and it really pulls you out of the game. Anyway to make this transition more fluent ?

Yes, the shadows are the only really big thing that annoys me graphically other than optimization.
If your running on a low shadows, they do lots of flickering every time they move too. Very noticeable and annoying if your stood still.

Probably sounds crazy to a lot of you but I'd rather disable shadows completely then deal with the crap we have now, would make the game look a lot cleaner at least.
