The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I guess it's good that this is my first PC game in like seven years, besides the Nvidia guide stuff i haven't done anything to the game and i think it looks fucking beautiful.

Tried Immersive HUD last night and it already feels like something I couldn't live without.

Nothing too fancy since I guess it's a beta part of a larger mod. Health, Magicka and Stamina are only displayed when they are in use or charging. Compass is displayed only when you sprint and crosshairs appear only when casting or using a bow.

When you are just wandering around it's just sweet Skyrim vistas as far as the eye can see.

Little help please, I've installed some of the main mods, Serious textures, better water etc and now I have a yellow FPS counter in the top-left of my screen and I can't figure out how to disable it. Any tips?

I used the QD Interface mod, and now I can't seem to enchant any items. It's not nearly as annoying as the in/out/in/out/in/out water noise I get anytime I'm with 200 feet of water

Sounds like Fusebox hit F12 along the way and enabled FRAPS showing up.

It's a known bug with QD inventory mod. You can actually still enchant, the problem is that when you select something, you're not actually selecting what you think you are selecting (so you think you selected iron dagger, but really selected iron helmet). You can work around it, I typically found that I would select item (it'd be wrong), select enchantment (I think that would be wrong too), then select gem, then go back, change item, then change enchantment. The second time around it would be right.

Annoying as hell and made the mod worthless to me since I am regularly enchanting. By the lack of updates I'm not sure that mod is ever going to get fixed, and I'm starting to think SkyUI is still a ways away since that mod author seems to be the kind of guy who thinks it is never ready.

Someday the inventory will be made good though!

Edit: in the comments of that mod a few people have said they've solved the problem by removing the crafting menu from some file, haven't experimented with it myself though.

That's pretty cool. I remember talking to someone early on about how I didn't like that the HUD was always on screen. I might have to try this out.

Whatever dude. It's not like you can measure the system RAM + VRAM usage and see that the game crashes when it hits 2 GB of combined usage...

Oh wait, yes you can. 4GB mod is not a placebo. Educate yourself, young troll.

You can measure RAM + Video RAM usage by using Process Hacker. I can tell the 4GB launcher works on my system because Process Hacker reports that TESV.exe.4gb is using up to 1.1GB of VRAM + about 1.3GB of RAM. My GTX 570 has 1280MB VRAM, so I'm guessing the 1.1GB allocation is simply maxing out my card when you consider the 120-130MB of VRAM Windows 7 itself needs to keep running.

Without the launcher, TESV.exe can only reserve about 800MB of VRAM and 900 MB of RAM, which is already perilously close to the 2GB limit. In fact, if I try to load my current 12MB save file without the 4GB launcher, I get an immediate CTD, whereas I can play just fine with the launcher. (I can start a new game without the launcher, but who knows how far I'd get without CTDs). I suspect as I continue to play and the save file size increases, even the 4GB launcher won't save me from an inevitably doomed and bloated save file, but that's how it goes with gamebryo. It happens sooner to PS3 users, so we should count our blessings I suppose.

No, but I did install RadeonPro and disabling that seems to have turned the FPS off for now.
On my RadeonPro hitting F11 switches the corner of the screen the FPS counter shows up on with one extra press hiding it completely. That may be the default behavior so give it a try if you want to keep RadeonPro running.

Not too sure why, but I like the images "without" (the original) more than the images "with".

I hate to say it but I reverted back to default shortly after taking those screens. I like the way dragonsreach is lit with the mod, tho. I'm playing mod-free at the moment. I'll probably save all the mods for my next character.

I was just testing iPresentInterval=2, which limits the game to 30fps, but at the expense of enormous load times and horrible input lag. Those two problems aside, it's excellent! It feels pretty much like console-quality locked 30fps. The Dxtory 30fps limiter looks utterly terrible in comparison, stuttery as hell.

So why is this iPresentInterval=2 an available option, why is it so laggy, and why is it so hard to implement a locked 30fps properly? If you could get rid of the lag, I'd happily play the game like this. It's way better than the 60fps with drops in towns that I'm currently getting.

Has anyone else been getting huge drops in framerate? I did the first and second imperials quest having to go to some cave/ruin and the game just continued to get worse and worse performance wise. Once I finished the second quest I fast traveled to Solitude and my fps was in the teens which normally is in the 40s. Ugh would love to play more of this game but I keep getting issues like this.

Backup/delete old saves and only leave the 5 most recent. That might help.

The lush grass and smart UI mods are awesome.

1.6GB in backup saves with an average file size of about 9MB ><

I don't even know why I'm keeping them but I may delete them after a bit.

Is there a directory where backup saves are stored? Because I just checked and my save directory is about 300mb with 36 saves with file sizes between 7 and 10 mb. The highest save number is 308. Does it update the number when you overwrite a save?

I just cut/paste them into a self made directory.

Oh god. I recently did the ugrids 7 thing but performance has been dodgy. I didn't back up the original .ini files ( no idea why I didnt ) I tried to modify the ini myself to remove the ugrids line but whenever I loaded a save it would instantly crash. So.. I tried the method here:

http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Gui...guaranteed-to-make-your-game-look-even-better

To roll back and saved.. exited.. went back in. Now when I launch Skyrim the background logo is red and when I attempt to load any of the recent 3 saves it instantly crashes.

Anyone had this red logo thing? Started to think I've destroyed my 80 hours of saves :|

The thing with the red color comes from an ini file in your data directory. I think it happens when you save your ini via the console. To restore your save you should just have first load up a save you saved with uGrids 7 then do the ini stuff (ugrids 5, save, refresh) and create a new save. You should be able to load the new save when u change the uGrids line back to 5.

I and someone else had the red issue a page or so back.

Just go into your data folder and delete any ini you find there. There should be a few lines that you can use to identify the problem:

rUIMistMenu_AmbientZPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientZNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientYNegRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXPosRGB=0,0,0
rUIMistMenu_AmbientXNegRGB=0,0,0

I deleted the whole ini but you can try just removing them.

What smart ui? You mean ihud? At first I didn't think I was going to get much out of ihud but decided to try it anyway because I like the mod author. But I am actually really enjoying it, makes the game a lot more immersive. Now I just turn on all my quest markers, see which ones are nearby, and navigate the world primarily by the clues Inside it occasionally checking the map rather than just following the arrow on the compass.

Yup, that's what I meant.

Good idea with turning on quests. I hate seeing lots of map markers though.

Just in the 'My Games/Skyrim' section in Win 7? I did try deleting the 2 .ini in there but it still happened. I've just ended up completely deleting it in Steam and im downloading again. Hopefully my saves won't be ruined.

Whaaat?! Why delete it all?

It's in the main Skyrim root directory. The Data folder. It's something like steamapps/common/skyrim/data.

I had spent too much time getting angry ;) It's ok. It's almost done and I do have my saves. Just hope they arent broken from the ugrid thing I set a couple days ago as this will all be vanilla.

You didn't follow it all the way through and delete Skyrim.ini.

Have they patched the crashing to windows yet? My game is crashing to windows every session and it's really sapping my desire to play.

Someone will peddle some 4GB mod snake oil, you can try it but it did nothing for me.

Haha good luck. I was getting pretty angry too. Spent a good hour or so trying to fix it and deleting the wrong files.

Working ok now - only lost about 2 hours play as it was quite recent when I began messing with the ugrid stuff. Think i'll leave that vanilla and just stick to my mod packs / FXAA. Thanks for offering the fix though.

Good to hear :)

You're welcome!

I've just finished playing BF 3 MP [B2K mostly] and my god, switching to it from Skyrim is like jump to another dimension. I'm not talking about how fluent it is or what image quality it has [it has much worse then my Skyrim], or about whole destruction and particle effects but just solely textures. Its just mindblowing that such a game has like 4 times better textures than Skyrim.
If anyone has B2K, launch Skyrim, look at some textures and then jump into the BF, Your jaws will drop :)
