The Flash |OT| Gotta Go Fast - Tuesdays 8/7c

Well, I thought this was the best episode so far. Which makes sense, we all knew the Flash/Zoom (I'm just gonna call him Zoom from now on) showdown would be epic. And hey, it was.

The special effects continue to impress, even though we all know it's on a tv budget. They obviously aren't gonna hold up to close scrutiny the way that great film CGI can, but for TV level CGI, The Flash is probably right at the edge of what's achievable today. The only time it actually fell down for me was when Zoom was handing Dr. Wells his ass. The CGI model of Wells getting beaten looked like it was rendered on a PS2. But all the rest of it, especially Ronnie as Firestorm, looked really good.

About the only negative in this episode is when Barry finally goes and spills the beans to Iris. That's when you're reminded that, yes, this is indeed a CW show and now we have to endure this typical CW bullshit. Ugh. Cringeworthy to watch.

Some thoughts on Zoom's identity:

Well, the show certainly seems to want you to think that it's Wells. All the evidence is pointing to him. But I'm still not sure. For one thing... Zoom looks like a brick shithouse in that suit, while Dr. Wells is a lanky fella.

Zoom taking out the SWAT team was pretty nice, though I was hoping for something a bit more accurate to this panel:

Don't know if this has been discussed before. But do you think it is possible that Wells locked up all the metahumans after they gained their powers. So he could release them for Barry to become stronger by facing them.

Kind of strange that they just started to show up, after Barry woke up from the coma and not before. Like they were waiting for him.

Will you guys quit it with the CW romance complaining. Like shitty romance drama hasn't been a staple of comic books since the golden age. Or that sometimes its the best part of that material.

Yeah I don't mind the Barry/Iris schtick in this show at all. It's fun little drama but it doesn't overwhelm the series or episodes, it's not the primary focus like in Smallville and that's fine. Iris is also already 100x better than Lana Lang or Laurel.

Mte.

This shit ain't related to a network, it's a foundation of the source material

Theory from youtube:

"Harrison Wells is not the only Reverse Flash, he is just the original; a.k.a Dr. Edward Clariss (Harrison Wells is just a pseudonym). Wells was just helping Eobard Thawne become the reverse flash as well. Eobard Thawne was born in the 25th century, so Wells needed Eobard to be so fast that he can travel back in time. That's where Well's plan comes in, he is just augmenting Eobard's suit. It may be the tachyons that allow Thawne to use the red light force to travel back in time. So now Wells is storing the suit in the secret room so that in the 25th century Eobard can find it and run fast enough to travel back in time to trigger the events that create the flash (like killing his Mother, and causing the explosion). That is why Wells asked Eddie Thawne by his last name to read the Reverse Flash his rights to remind him it's Eddie Thawne. And that is why Eobard did not kill Eddie, because Eddie Thawne is Eobard Thawne's ancestor, and in doing so he would kill himself. And maybe Wells did just Incidentally create Barry unintentionally. And the second speedster in the room when Barry's mom dies is Barry Allen from the future trying to save his mom, and Barry carries himself 20 blocks away."

Been saying that since season one of Arrow. Comic books have always been soapy as fuck.

Doesn't mean we need to have that shit here. And it may be handled well in the comics, but the show stuff is garbage.

It's not the romance, it's the way it's presented.

Edit: thought this was the Arrow thread. Flash has been pretty tolerable with the romance, but Arrow is just too much.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the way the romance has been presented. Iris and Barry have good chemistry and so does Iris and Eddie. They've managed to tie in Barry's hesitance to act back to his parents. The best non-action scenes have been about Barry's romantic feelings toward Iris. It doesn't feel forced or cheesy to me.

I think there are two
Reverse Flashes

The one in this episode is
Wells

The one who killed Barry's mom is
Eddie
Regarding the "other speedster", I think it's pretty obvious it was Barry. He probably got sent back in time with RF and tried to stop his mother's murder, but failed.

Obviously the other red speedster isn't Barry, it's his dad and like the other poster said the old show has been canon the whole time!

I kid, but the whole stint with Wells being beaten up was likely just a cover, remember Joe was already pressing him for info about the yellow man. This was probably just a way to eliminate suspicion of Wells.

To be fair, I would prefer the double Reverse Flash idea though. I would much rather have Wells as Zoom than Eddie right now.

EDIT2: Or it is Wells and this just one of his crazy stunts to get Barry to work harder, and show him that he's not doing enough.

maybe i lack imagination but good lord how hard would it be to make a good flash game. like how do you pull off that gameplay? unless you make it some on rails shit-fest.

arrow would be easy though. a little tomb raider reboot with some arkham asylum.

In Infamous Second son, super speed is an awesome travel power in the game for the open world but it's combined with "neon power" so it's just not straight speedster...it could work as a basis for a flash game if your primary attack was melee in "bullet time" or something

Second Son is the perfect example of how not to do super powers. None of the powers in that game had weight to it, they all felt so lacking in impact. inFamous 1 & 2 did it much better. Neon dash makes you feel like you're FPS sprinting and can't turn properly. Flash running should feel like a blur but with perfect control.

Or you could just create an endless runner complete with speed force recharges that you can buy with IAPs to keep progressing!

Your ultimate goal is to catch your mom's killer, but watch out, the Rogues and their trickery will try to stop you at every turn!

See, 1 million downloads easy.

What a fucking fantastic episode. Put me in the confused camp but I don't care, it was too good a viewing. Firestorm CGI was amazing as well.

Just rewatched the ending, Wells superheals his face when he activates his suit. Perhaps the ring gives him his power?

The ring also caused the suit to appear. I'm wondering whether or not activating the ring resulted in the timeline fixing itself and the Reverse Flash and Wells were "merged" back in to a single timeline entity, hence the healing and the suit appearing?

Future Wells had to initiate all of these events in the past in order to give himself what's needed to fully operate as the Reverse Flash, in order to help the Flash become who he's destined to be, etc. etc. etc.

I've never been good with time travel stuff so I'm probably chatting shit.

EDIT: ^Yeah what he said

Okay so not only is Barry's mum's murder a predestination paradox apparently the birth of Reverse Flash is too! I mean obviously with all the drops of tachyons enable "the technology of the future" they're hinting that they enable time-travel. So Wells apparently steals the device and gives it to himself so he can travel through time. I love it!

It's really fucking amazing how far we've come with TV CGI, considering we were dealing with this only a couple years ago:

While certainly true, shit like Lost's inexcusable CGI was unacceptable even then. BSG was doing spectacular stuff alongside it with a fraction of the budget

So I went and checked the pilot (trailer) and realised that it's the yellow lightning that moves Barry into the street. Considering how long it took Reverse Flash to kill Barry's mum it stands to reason that Flash was successfully preventing him from doing so.

Barry is eventually going to find out that going downstairs as a kid and forcing his older self to rescue him gave Reverse Flash the opportunity to kill his mum isn't he? :'(

Yeah the mum-killing bit is confusing.

* Reverse-Flash killed Barry's mum for a specific reason which he's not yet ready to reveal (but probably again tied to making Barry have something to help fuel him as The Flash when he gets his powers).
* Future Flash must have gone back to the same point with RF in order to stop it from happening cos he obvs wants his mum around in the future and thinks by saving his mother he could rewrite history. Downside here is that by doing so we may never have ever got The Flash. Typical Barry to not consider certain key elements though in his plans.
* RF obviously succeeds in killing the mother and probably merks FF in the process (otherwise he wouldn't have succeeded in killing Barry's mum)
* RF dumps young Barry on the street to get him away. He needs Barry to grow up and become a hero, blah blah as we all know Wells wants him to be.

Basically RF is the original super smart ridiculously powerful Flash. He has some fucked up sense of heroism but why do we even have a Flash in that case. Reverse Flash can just be a hero on his own.

No doubt there's way more to it and it's not as simple as I made it.

EXCITING TIMES.

So I'm guessing Walls is someone from the future who was a big fan (or sidekick) to the Flash. Flash died and Walls became insane and went back in time to make Barry into a better superhero so he could survive what happened to him.

His power comes from his suit, which is then taken by Thawne during the season finale.

That kinda... makes it a bit true to the comic at least.

Didn't even notice Wells fast healing when he put the suit away. I have no clue if he's getting his powers from the suit or not.

I'm of the camp that so far all the Reverse Flash appearances have been time traveling Wells. Now the order of the timeline is a bit hazy, as Wells appears to have stayed in the current timeline for at least ten years.

I think Eddie's time will come later.

Or Maybe he is simply the Daniel West version. Iris' brother from another mother.

Wouldn't that make him black? Also the show hasn't seemed interested in exploring the West family lineage yet, which is absolutely being saved for Wally's introduction. Now if Wells was related to Barry, that I might buy.

When Cisco says that there was someone trying to save Barry's mom, that might mean that future Barry tried to save her, which means we could have a Flashpoint Paradox arc, hopefully.
