Just back from seeing the Senna film. Absolutely stunning film, you HAVE to see it.
Doesn't matter if you aren't a fan of motorsport, everyone HAS to see this.
Not afraid to say I shed a few tears at the end of the film.

They are so many people to love & hate in this film:
Ron Dennis is a hero in my eyes after seeing this.
Professor Sid Watkins is a hero & friend/confidant of Senna
Alain Prost is a meh.
Jean-Marie Balestre, head of FIA, is absolute scum.

The video cuts, music & on-board footage work really well.
The film shows a huge amount of video from the Imola weekend I had never seen from the history of the 1994 Williams car & its balance issues to the the tension that Senna was under & then the Rubens & Roland crashes.
It has on-board footage of the Imola race after the safety car pulls off until the moment Senna crashed into the wall. Sid Watkins describing the scene is heart-breaking stuff.
I always feel bad for Roland. Just because he was not as talented as Senna, it seems so many people feel it was not a tragedy that he was killed too.

Benefits to the open cockpit design? Sure. It's easier for the driver to see everything, the driver doesn't have to worry about the windscreen getting dirty (tearoffs ftw) and driver changes are much quicker.

I don't know anything about actual performance benefits though.

There are no performance benefits. Audi went with it primarily for the quick driver changes, because that used to be a big factor in the length of the pit stops. But when the number of mechanics working on the car in the pit was limited to only two, that advantage was lost because the drivers would switch quickly, but they still had to wait for the tyre change to finish.

Still interesting to see Aston Martin sticking with the open-cockpit design when Audi basically said it was pointless now.
That team is an absolute shambles, they purposely went with their own design instead of basing their new car on the Lola B090/60 (which was competitive and beautiful) that they used a few years ago and now they're nearly 30 seconds of the pace. Even the LMP2 cars are on their pace.

Prodrive and Aston, hang your heads in shame. (Would love to be proven wrong though )

The FIA has set a date of December 11th for this year’s Indian Grand Prix.

The FIA’s website has already been updated to reflect the new schedule.

An FIA spokesperson told F1 Fanatic “let’s say that for the moment, it’s official”.

The new date increases the length of the calendar by two weeks. The Indian Grand Prix takes over from the Brazilian round as the season finale.

The race, to be held at the Buddh International Circuit, was moved to the end of the calendar to make way for the reinstated Bahrain Grand Prix.

The FIA announced on Friday that Bahrian would take the date given to India, and moved the Indian round to an unspecified date at the end of the season.

However there is serious doubt over whether this arrangement will hold as F1 teams have told the FIA they will not accept an extension of the calendar.

According to the FIA’s International Sporting Code, changes to the calendar must have the support of all the teams.

Does anyone know if there's going to be a stream of Le Mans? I don't have Eurosport so I wont be able to watch it on the TV :(

Are there any thoughts on who's expected to be strong / weak at this year's event? (Le Mans)
In the LMP1 category Audi and Peugeot are expected to dominate the top positions with the Oreca's and the Rebellion's following suit.

Oh Flavio and your mega hot wife, how we hate (read: are jealous) of you.

ninja edit, Didn't the FIA ban him for life? Was that appealed and overturned?

Eurosport HD, it finished at eight, the next session starts at nine and should be on that stream.

Cool going to tune in at 9.
Can't wait for the epic Audi/Peugeot battle.
Last year Peugeot should have had a 1-2-3 finish but someone threw a grenade in the engines around the 20 hour mark.

Isn't there a motorsport thread for this stuff? Kinda annoying to come in here and not have F1 discussion.

We're just about the only 'core' motorsport fans on GAF. We might as well just discuss it here. If you don't like it then there's no need to comment.

I'm just saying I come to this thread because it's the |OT| of F1 and to have it bumped with non-F1 discussion is pretty annoying.

I'm not the only one who feels that way, the guys on Steam agreed when I brought it up.

FPs are tommorow in Canada, so in meantime Le Mans debate is welcome :)

There was no 2011 motorsport thread. I was tempted to put one up, but I don't know enough about the Indycar, MotoGP, or WRC etc. to warrant it.

Since this is a pretty big weekend, I don't think it's a problem if we have Le Mans discussion in here.

Well now we're bumping with non-motorsport discussion. If having to click the thread, scroll down, skim read, notice you're not interested and close the tab is too much of a problem, then sure.

Come on, like it's hard to create a new thread for this. Create, subscribe, discuss. Takes less than a minute and you might get other users interested.

Cool, I'll just go into a Skyward Sword thread and start posting about Ocarina of Time. It's kinda related and if people don't like it they can just ignore it!

Sounds good, it's not like you're taking it out of context or anything.

@Lucius: Here.

On topic. I wish Audi would come to F1. :(

That wont happen until 2013 at the very earliest. IIRC Volkswagon said they wont enter F1 even after 2013 with either Porsche, Audi or VW. But I'm not sure.

From the press conference:

Q: The race was stopped so when you were in the car what was the problem?
Vitaly Petrov: The problem first of all was my legs were stuck inside the cockpit. At the same time I tried to move them and I didn’t feel them. This is why I decided it is better to wait for someone to help me as I tried to feel my fingers on the leg and I couldn’t feel them. This is why I didn’t want to do some bullshit. I just wait for the people who can help me to do something. I thought it was broken to be honest but I was lucky it was not.

Q: (Bob McKenzie - The Daily Express) Lewis, Todt said that, had you not written, he was thinking about a six race ban, so was that in your mind when you wrote, and do you think you’re lucky not to have had that sort of thing?
Lewis Hamilton: It wasn’t in mind, no, but just as I said earlier, I just had time to reflect on the weekend and I wrote a sincere apology to Jean and to the FIA and I got a great letter back, so after that I was able to put it behind me and I’m very grateful to be here. I do want what’s best for the sport and I want to be able to contribute to improving the sport and making things great here.

Six race ban seems like quite an overreaction. Didn't even hear about that.

“My office was next to the stewards. Every time I went to see them I avoided making any comment. For me what Lewis said was unacceptable but I didn’t want to overreact. I could have asked our judicial court to address the problem but we never officially opened the case. He went to the stewards to apologise. He went with his father. Maybe it would have been better to put him in the court; to ban him for six grands prix. But he wrote to me and I wrote to him and the thing is over." -- Jean Todt

I'm beginning to feel that Todt doesn't belong as the FIA chairman. A six race ban would have been ridiculous.

It's pretty ridiculous that so much controversy was caused over what was clearly a joke. To threaten a 6 race ban for quoting Ali G? :|
Psh, he didn't quite Ali G.

Ali G says "Is it because I is black?"
Hamilton says "Maybe it's because I'm black."

He's far too well spoken. :D

I sincerely doubt Todt was seriously suggesting the possibility of a six race ban. The quote to me reads along the lines of "we could've issued an absurd punishment over a non-issue or just end it with an apology for a poorly conceived statement, let's all move on."

Webber doesn't want to quit
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92106

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner expects 'straightforward' talks with Mark Webber about a contract for next year when they sit down to discuss it over the next few months - after revealing that the Australian has told the outfit he wants to remain on board in 2012.

[...]

i guess he could stary trough 2012, while Riccardo gets his year and a half at ToroRosso before he takes his seat? at least a possible scenario.
