So next race is going to be the first F1 race I see in person after about 3 years of watching. Going to Austin for it. My girlfriends uncle is a big to do in Texas who owns car museums and has a few F1 cars himself. I got invited to join in their VIP skybox for the race weekend, I'm crazy excited and I'm going to have to control myself come race weekend because I'll be flipping out. I have no idea what it's like seeing an F1 race live, like should I bring binoculars? My eyesight sucks.

also Austin track has been one of my favorites, I love that first turn.

Where is the VIP box at? I didn't have binoculars but they would have been good for the first lap and not much beyond that, but I was sitting at T12 and had tons of action happening in front of me pretty much all day.

Even when you're right on top of a corner it's nice to be able to focus right in. Need to make sure you don't have catch fencing in the way though.

I'm going to start looking into Spa 2015.

No way am I going to miss what could be the last F1 race there for a long time.

17 point lead with 3 GP's to go....dat double points!

fuck double points!

Sorry, has this been posted?
"The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the Go-Pro camera that he had on his helmet that injured his brain," Moncet explained to the radio station.

Slowly waking is great news! The gopro mount injuring him? I don't know about that. I guess it depends on the helmet but I would think Schumi would be wearing a quality helmet given how much F1 drivers are in helmets.

There are only a handful of helmets out there that have actually been tested with go pro mounts attached. They're just not designed for it.

This was denied by a Bild journalist, it was fucking bullshit. Camera had nothing to do with it.

Good point, it probably isn't something that has come into play until the last couple years with the explosion of GoPro, and like, cameras.

Good to know, thanks!

Philippe Bianchi saying Jules's situation is "desperate" (french article quoting Gazzetta dello Sport)

Man it's so hard for the family :(

English translation from the BBC:
Jules Bianchi will not give up after Japan accident, says his father

Marussia's Jules Bianchi "will not give up" despite remaining in a critical condition after crashing at the Japanese GP, says his father Philippe.
The Frenchman, 25, suffered severe head injuries when he collided with a recovery vehicle at Suzuka.
"The situation is desperate," said Philippe Bianchi. "Every time the telephone goes, we know it could be the hospital to tell us that Jules is dead.
"He will not give up, I'm sure of that. I can see it. I believe it."

He added in an interview with Italian paper La Gazzetta dello Sport: "I speak to him. I know he can hear me.
"His doctors have told us that this is already a miracle, no one has ever survived such a serious accident. But Jules won't give-up.
F1 drivers in Russia
F1 drivers formed a 'circle of solidarity' for Jules Bianchi ahead of the Russian Grand Prix
"His trainer Andrea says that if there is one person who can make it happen with his will, it's Jules."
Philippe said the family have been touched by the show of support from other Formula 1 drivers, who gathered at the front of the grid ahead of the Russian Grand Prix, arms around each other's shoulders, forming a 'circle of solidarity' for Jules.
"I've never seen anything like that," said Philippe. "It touched us very deeply. We thank every one of them. So many of them have been in touch, written to me; [Fernando] Alonso, [Jean-Eric] Vergne, [Felipe] Massa have given strong messages.
"Hamilton wrote me a beautiful email in which he says that if there is anything he can do, he's there. Rossi and Marquez from Moto GP too."

Philippe also said that he is using the accident of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who continues his recovery at home after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in December, as a reference point.
Marussia team at the Russian GP
The Marussia team paid tribute to injured driver Jules Bianchi ahead of the Russian Grand Prix
"I was very sad when he got hurt," said Philippe. "I kept wondering, like every one else 'Why don't they tell us more about how he is?'.
"But now I'm in the same position I understand. Everyone keeps asking me how Jules is but I can't reply, there is no answer. It's very serious, but he's stable.
"One day he seems a bit better, other days a bit worse. The doctors don't say. The damage from the accident is very bad but we don't know how it will evolve.

"Even with Schumacher it took months to come out of the coma. [FIA president] Jean Todt said he hopes Michael will one day be able to have a normal life. One day I hope we can say the same about Jules."
He added: "It's tough. In a week the life of this family has been destroyed. What are we doing here? Living a nightmare in a place very far from home.
"But when Jules gets a bit better we can transfer him, maybe to Tokyo and things will be a bit easier. But who knows when that will happen. If it will happen. We have no certainties, we just have to wait."

Ferrari’s Formula 1 team is now using driving simulation software from specialist software company rFpro that models the world’s Grand Prix circuits with unprecedented levels of realism and response speed. The change was implemented following convincing results during extensive evaluation by Ferrari engineers. Ferrari’s decision to change operational software, mid-season, underlines the scale of the performance improvement available because simulator downtime in F1 can mean costly interruption to the engineering development schedule. Ferrari already had a well-developed DIL (driver-in-the-loop) software solution in which they had invested significantly over a number of years, but the leap in performance was too great to ignore. “The trial of rFpro was so promising that we immediately put it to use in production-intent applications within our F1 team,” explained Ferrari’s Giacomo Tortora, responsible for Vehicle Dynamics. To be fully effective as an engineering development tool for supplementing the limited track testing permitted in F1, simulation software must reproduce the track surface in minute detail and respond to dynamic inputs faster than the driver can detect. TerrainServer from rFpro is the first simulation package to fully satisfy both these requirements, and was selected after an exhaustive evaluation process. "I think Ferrari’s tests are the most demanding faced by any vendor. We tested video bandwidth and latency, road surface data quality and visual accuracy for the digital circuit models,” said Tortora. "It is important that the circuit model captures the road surface accurately, but also that it can be validated to ensure that our vehicle model is running on the same road surface as the real car,” he continued. "The way in which TerrainServer captures every LiDAR scanned data-point within the tyre contact patch, and integrates them all to provide our vehicle model with accurate road input, improves correlation with our measured data and also feels more realistic for the driver.” To ensure the necessary level of track surface detail, rFpro uses LiDAR scanned data, reproducing surface features in 3D with an accuracy better than 1mm in Z (height) and 1cm in X and Y (position), representing a ten-fold improvement over the resolution previously available. In addition to its existing library of circuit data, rFpro can provide customers with turn-key solutions for scanning, modelling and providing high definition LiDAR data for other tracks, or even public road test routes. Ferrari was equally demanding of the response speed, or latency, of the system, according to Tortora. "Video bandwidth is very important to us because we run multi-channel stereo projection and also wanted the fastest possible refresh rate,” he said. “rFpro are able to deliver the maximum video bandwidth, in stereo, at very high refresh rates with just a single frame of latency between our vehicle model and the projectors. This is the fastest solution on the market: video bandwidth is probably an order of magnitude greater than a traditional OpenGL based solution." With most of the top F1 teams now using rFpro’s software, the company is turning its attention to the mainstream automotive industry, where the potential applications are even greater. The ability to simulate a vehicle’s dynamic behaviour accurately, with a driver in the loop, makes it feasible to assess extreme situations such as those encountered when testing ADAS systems, ESP and other control systems designed to affect the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle. - See more at: http://www.autocarpro.in/news-inter...ware-rfpro-6554#sthash.xcgz4bEV.x1lnTZp0.dpuf

Ferrari is going to replace their simulator software with rFactor. Apparently their own simulator was a bit like their wind tunnel. Big, bloated, expensive and behind the competition.

Their guillotine is a bit rusty, but it still works just fine.

Well they better get it ready because
@pitlanetalk: Omnicorse reports Raikkonen uncharacteristically raised his voice to Mattiacci about the car problems in Sochi. He was furious.#F1 #Formula1
@pitlanetalk: Raikkonen told Mattiacci he's giving 110% every weekend but things are not improving. Problem is still with front end and balance. #F1

I told my dad the other day as he was asking about Max Verstappen, if only you bought me a kart when I was seven we'd be filthy rich right now.

Probably not, but one can dream, can't he?

My six-year-old nephew wants to go dirt bike racing and I told him that he's better off in a kart so he can make the family a ton of money, so I'm putting all my faith into him now, at 31 I think it's ready to let that dream go for myself.

Have you made him sign a contract so that you're his manager?

If it's on the front straight I'd suggest walking around after the start of the race just to experience more of the track as well as potentially seeing more passing/action. If it's at T1 I'd stay there all race long and enjoy those binoculars. With a little elevation you should be able to see at least half of the track.

I wonder what simulator tech are other teams using. Mercedes probably in-house developed simulator based on their road car simulators in their main R&D centre.
