The Game Developers Conference 2006 Thread (Part II)

At the very least, I'm hoping for high framerates on PS3. Obviously, those demos were a bit early, but I really hope the developers realize that one of the biggest problems with 360 software thus far is the framerate.

I'd hope for a minimum solid 30 in all games, but I think PS3 will be as much about doing more per frame as more frames per second. Doing less per frame won't necessarily mean higher framerates, on the system, as your framerate is bound by the slowest cog, so to speak.

Dean Takahashi snagged some
insider info
from Sony workers-
I went to a Q&A with Harrison and was astounded to discover that Sony had not yet decided, or at least wasn't yet saying, if it would have a hard disk drive as standard on every machine, or if it would be an option. Someone later told me at the Sony party that cost-reduction on the PS 3 was a priority now and they needed to figure out if they could afford a hard drive on every box.
Pretty much what everyone thought already, but at least this is a confirmation?

Hey, thanks for posting a big ass unnecessary picture at a time when GAF is slow and bandwidth is precious. Now please go back to the freaking Nintendo Forums.

Thanks, lotsa love

posting an image not hosted on GAF servers doesn't slow down the forum

but yes, that image was unnecessary. interesting to see that nothing has replaced the long since omitted (since TGS) "Revolution" tag that appeared at the bottom.

The PS3 demos's sound like they are early in development, makes me wonder what the hell have the devs been doing since e32005. Hopefully they will show us some good stuff at E3.

Sounds about right about the early demo.

Warhawk and Resistance didn't sound particularly early (though Ted Price did insist the latter was early, and it was a Dec 05 build), which makes sense if they're coming this year. Though they have 8-12 months left in development, with final hardware yet to come also, which isn't insignificant..

Some reports referred to 3 video chats being open simultaneously..this might be the slide they were referring to.

Whatever... we will have to wait for E3 to see how the games look. Everything should be stable, good looking by then

Good showing by Sony. And we still 8 months away from launch, the final kits have yet to hit. Im sure the games will look comparable to 2nd gen X360 games, maybe third gen??

No you can't say that. We will have to wait until the launch to see how the games compare. From all the impressions I have read the first gen PS3 titles will be ok but the stuff that comes out in 2007 will be more impressive (ratchet and clank, getaway etc)

ok scrap that :P Lets just wait for e3

count me in the camp that says iwata wont be dropping any bombs or real revolution news aside from the official name if that link about it being "GO" being real.

I'm thinking we'll see something similar to the previous gen. PS2 offered more 60 fps titles than either of the other platforms and I feel certain developers that are now working on PS3 clearly believe in the power of 60. I'd bet that both Warhawk and I8 (easier to type than the actual name) will be run at 60 fps in their final form, if their previous games are anything to judge by. I'd also imagine that PS3 will once again receive stronger Japaense support and it was from those developers that most 60 fps games on the PS2 came from. Even in games that didn't really run at 60 fps, you'd see that smooth framerate appear in other areas. FFXII, for instance, runs at 30 fps...but all menus and whatnot move at 60 fps. MGS3 is the same, as the game itself struggles occasionally with framerate but all menus (with 3D objects) run at 60 fps. It just creates a more polished looking interface and that is something that has commonly shown up this gen.

XBOX games (including many of the BIG titles) were often known for choppy menus, unstable framerates, and tearing. 360 has been following this same path thus far.

It makes such a big difference. Something like GRAW would look 10x more impressive if it were running at a high framerate, for instance.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the Revolution has the smoothest framerates. Maybe I'm wrong, but I imagine the controller will make jerky framerates more noticable than ever before, especially in first person shooters.
We'll see, but I wouldn't hold out on that. Nintendo's GC products rarely ever went for 60 fps and generally chose to stick with a constant 30. Even if we DO see 60, the Revolution will still be producing visuals that will likely fail to compare. I want to see next-gen visuals at 60 fps...but it is seeming less likely these days.

It doesn't seem at all clear to me - I think pubs will be able to region-lock their games.

Also, just listening to element's recording of the conference, there are some neat technical details that seem to have been glossed over. Specifically regarding Warhawk, the demonstrator specifically mentions that they're mixing graphics rendered by Cell and RSX - for example, the clouds are apparently being rendered by a volumetric software ray-tracer on one of the SPUs. It's surprising to see that kind of usage so soon!

Why would they call it the 60 then?
