The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

Why did I never think about panel lining while the pieces are still attached to the board? As someone who doesn't paint and just does panel lining so far, are there any other things I might want to do before cutting out the pieces? It doesn't seem like a good idea to put on stickers, but maybe?

probably much easy to panel line after it's built in most cases.

RG's are so tiny and hard to hold so i'm using the runners to hold small parts in place while panel lining. but some of the parts are hard to panel line until they're cut from the tree, i'm just doing all the parts that are facing up. so i don't bother hard to reach places later.

but yeah, i decal as i build each part. much easier to reach w/ those tiny decals

I panel lined every piece of my Wing gundam before I even started putting the pieces together below is a sample. I will clean it up and re add ink before I top coat it.

Looking good.

Honestly the MG Wings need it bad. The RG needs it to, but just the amount of white and the far less detail of th Mg wings make it a requirement or things start to get lost.

thanks guys, I am not sure if I am going to panel the bottom/underneath part of the wings yet. I think it is kinda overkill.

Also these old kits have so many polycaps! like damn I should of took a pic of it for you guys but the Quabley uses about 30 polycap/pc parts.

I wouldn't panel line most things while still attached to the tree. I'd be nervous about the pressure creating stress marks by the gates, and the tree would get in my way during cleanup. ... I actually fail to see the benefit of doing this. For the small pieces especially I'd be afraid of damaging them.

I recently built the Zaku II OYW which is based on the 1.0....so I can relate :)

yeah, if that works better then, you definitely don't have to, just easier for me,

i did this for my de-active destiny and it was much easier to deal with on the runners and turned out great.

i found my fingers get oily so i smudge alot holding the pieces, so i try to do as much as i can before cutting, (i'm using a pencil)

you should see the macross stuff i have boxed up aside from the pile i posted, there's a lot of enablers on Macross World =) they have insane duplicates... a few of them are into gunpla and Metal build collecting... they got me hooked into gundams.
thankfully, i resisted the hot toys some of them collect. (almost got me into it but they're just too big to display and i have no room)
How big could those be? Macross stuff is bigger than gunpla?

Oh yeah, eat it, Full Frontal! Witness the awesome firepower of TRANS-AM!

I'm enjoying this game.
Ya know Sinanju was the thing I was excited for in DWG 3.....sadly a lot of the new suits just really sucked.

They did a good job with stuff like OO and the 3 additional Wing suits but some of the others just ew. Plus Zechs doing Heero's voice as well was just odd.

Sinanju looks cool, but doesn't seem to control very well. I thought it was just me, though, since I'm a newb. That's unfortunate.

I think it was DWG2, but I did play one of these games very briefly a few years ago. My friend and I wanted to do a one-on-one versus match and we ranted for an hour about the death of couch versus when we realized we couldn't. But then we came up with the ingenious plan of finding a spot on the CCA map where nobody would bother us and duking it out even though we weren't supposed to, or something.

I was Nu and he was Sazabi and it was the ultimate expression of our fifteen-year friendship-rivalry.

Yusss, My doorman just called and my pearl gloss kit came from manarake =)

i've been look so hard for this kit...
today's a good day =)

oh man... my whole room is stacked Macross and my closet.

i know right? crazy,

right I can only imagine the pain of collecting macross and gundam

just pure LOVE no pain haha, totally jk =) don't get into Macross, it will destroy your wallet!!! =D it's more for older peeps, (SDF-1 Macross came out in 84') i used to run around in the 80's when anime was scarce in the west, just to hunt for anything macross. once these highly engineered toy came out recently, after 20 years of nothing, people went nuts over them and revived interest in Macross for some younger fans.

Gundam has a much larger fanbase.
but i definitely see the same craze when the Metal Build line up was introduced.
and p-bandai doing that on the limited gunpla stuff...
Bandai knows how to milk and rob people knowing gundam fans will go into craze for it if it's limited.

Bandai recently got back into the Macross merchandise and starting playing the P-bandai game for their macross toys. doing the limited run B.S. (seriously, preorders on Macross are open for and last only 1-2 mins then sells out)

it's a trap for both gunpla and macross fans... and we're all falling for it.

i love it

Those things are huge and highly detailed, one of my favorites was that green one with the radome. How much do these actually cost?

ok, i cleared out my table and set it up for gunpla =)

sorry i'm a geek about this... trying to motivate myself as i give up building pretty easy and have a habit of not touching it for a long time once i stop, so i surround myself with box art to get my imagination and inspiration going =)

my table and RGs

Where the cutting mat @?

there's only 2 company's that have the Macross licence to make toys at the moment.
Arcadia(formally Yamato) and Bandai. (the Macross licence has been very exclusive and given to only one company per TV series)

-Arcadia has the exclusive licence for 1/60 scale toys for the following series: SDF-1 macross, macross plus, macross 7, macross zero)
-Bandai has the licence for everything else non scale and all toys for the recent Macross Frontier and upcoming Macross Delta launching this spring 2016 (Bandai are co-sponsors of Frontier and Delta)

the one w/ the radome, bandai Macross Frontier RVF-25 Luca renewal(v.2), is about 110-120 bucks aftermarket currently before shipping. (Luca's not popular, pretty easy to find)

Bandai's offering are fairly decent priced, if you can actually get your hands on a pre-order. On average, they're roughly about 100-160 each.

Arcadia's offerings currently are on average 280-340 before shipping (it's really high priced) but pre-orders are easy to get. bc they don't play the P-bandai game

too lazy to use it =) just using the bottom of the box to drop all my nubs and junk.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
David, that is an awesome collection.

So I jammed on Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 a little bit. It starts with Setsuna. <3 Fun game so far. Absurd, of course. But fun.

I got three a few years ago and had a blast...

Reborn is alright but it doesn't have that same spark---I blame the lack of the nice CG, and the fact that the dub voices hamming it up and shouting about peace while mowing down herds of enemies was really amusing. Plus the default music in Reborn is pretty lame, whereas DW3 despite removing the covers of the anime songs from the Western version had really nice tunes. Though Reborn has custom soundtracks so I can jam out to any Gundam song I want.

Also I'm disappointed they ignored a lot of series I was hoping got a boost from 3 to Reborn---no new G Gundam, Turn A Gundam, or Gundam X Mobile Suits is such a shame. They really need to get the Royal Shuffle Alliance together.

Was Frontier any good?

Was Frontier any good?

i think it was fairly well received by old and new fans bc they decided to continue w/ the new delta series.

Macross Fans are similar to the UC vs. AU debates.

The more recent shows are geared toward younger audience (which upsets the older hardcore looking for more serious story not waifus)

have you watched any previous series of Macross? depending on what you seen/preferred, will affect your opinion. but for the most part most old fans liked Macross Frontier after the initial blowback during the premier, plus it brought in a lot of new fans to Macross.

It was good. CG Valkyries continue to not be as good as they could be, but it's stupid to think that something like Plus' animation would ever happen again. Preview episode of Delta alleviated some of my fears based on recent promotional images. Was worried it was going to be Female Idol Unit vs Male Idol Unit, but that's not the setup at all. It's like Symphogear meets Macross. Also, Max's granddaughter is in it!

Macross has always been about love triangles and it was no different in Frontier. Delta might have some sort of love polygon though. lol

I've seen OG Macross, Plus and DYRL. I liked all three, nothing fucks with my Hikaru x Misa ship.

Wait whaattttt???? I always just assumed every sequel series took place way into the future and just killed off the remnants of the original cast, dna and all.
I really enjoyed Frontier (how could I not, same creative crew as Vision of Escaflowne) but it's a divisive series.
Escaflowne was one of the best mecha shows to come out of Sunrise, I'm vexed now.

80-something-year-old Mao cameo'ed in Frontier. Frontier is 20 years after 7. Max is a captain of a long range Macross colony ship in 7. Hikaru and Misa never show up again, but Minmey is still remembered in Frontier. She's the reason music is still so important to the culture. All in the same universe and only about 60-70 year span so far.

Don't worry, Frontier isn't as good as Escaflowne.

I love the Valkyrie design but I have never been able to get into Macross aside from Plus.
This is me.

I loved the characters. Sharron Apple's setup and excution was wonderful.

Plus I honestly think the Dub is amazing.

I dont care much for Macross aside from Plus, but as a stand alone mecha its story and characters jell better then most Gundam shows so I still rewatch it regularly.

I really need to watch Macross 7 at some point. I want it just for the Max and Miriya drama.

update progress:
just been doodling and experimenting this afternoon while watching TV..
i tried using the grey panel wash marker (left), thought it was too dark so i wiped it clear (center) and went with graphite(right). it might not come out well in the shots but the grey gundam marker looked too dark on white plastic for my tastes, i'm still a try to hard noob @ gunpla but having some fun.

speaking of Macross F, i tried to get a few girl singers i know to sing this song =)
makes me tear up a bit everytime i hear it =D

One of these days I'll suck it up and give Macross a fair shake, but the idol thing really, really turns me off... but... I've had people on this very site tell me to just try it anyway... but... idols...

It's part of the package heh. I wasn't too hot on Frontier because there seemed to be an over abundance of it. One of these days I'd like to get a VF-1J from Yamato/Arcadia.

As for Gundam, I haven't bothered with the recent stuff. I did watch the Thunderbolt OVA and that was awesome though.

Huh. This panel wash thing is pretty nice. The legs of my ancient HG Freedom were good test subjects.

Gunmetal gray on blue doesn't work well though. Gonna have to go grab some black paint.

I feel like I've leveled up. Haha.

Zero has no idols, but there is a songstress. I would never tell you to start there. I don't get what you're problem is. Plenty of singing in SEED. Frontier isn't a primer for Macross either.

Finished Flit's arc in AGE. The last couple episodes were pretty good. The fight scenes were good. I liked how exhausted Flit looked by the final duels. Grodek stole the damn show when he fucked up that kid's dad and was just like, "I killed your dad. Come get me." Grodek is becoming one of my favorite captain. Hopefully he continues to be great.

AGE is about to get actually pretty decent and interesting and then will dive into an abyss of shit.

I like the idea of following a family through a couple generations over the course of the series. Asemu seems alright so far. Flit has become the never around, kinda shit dad that all good mecha protagonists need. Flit still seems like he is thirsting after Yurin and it makes me wonder how his relationship with Emily is. Grodek told that one kid to become like him and instead Flit did.

While im with most that Age is horrible I actually feel Arc 1 is the worst as Flit is the worst of the three leads.

Flit was uninteresting in part one. I'm not far into Asemu's arc, but I like Flit now that his character took a turn for the worse after Yurin's death.

1,3 and 4 are all bad in their own way. It's almost impossible to pick which is the worst. Part 2 is the only section that can be construed as decent.

I cant really argue 3 and 4 are exactly higher quality.

Plus the weird baby factory syndrom the women get turned into really only makes it worse as the series goes on.

Well I mean of course Asemu arc is the best, there is a reason why they did a follow up OVA that expand more on Asemu Zeheart and Romary.

AGE was not that bad watching it a second time, it is just Kio arc and last 2 arc were really rushed. It would have much benefit from more time to flesh out Flit and Asemu and make this more of anthology series with different generations.

LEVEL 5 was just as short sighted as ever with Gundam AGE like their other properties. I still think AGE had potential. It is by no means good, but the premise had potential to be at the very least decent maybe good.

I personally despise enamel paint and exclusively use either acrylic or lacquer. Good that your plastic did not damage or melt, it is really easy so long as you keep the ratio in mind.

Good that the panel wash is treating you well. You can reuse that thinned paint that you used for the wash and weather your kit too. Having some pre thinned black, grey, brown for panel wash certain colors can also be use to do weather and rust. It makes metallic panel line easier too.

Really useful and it saves money and time in the process.
