The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

Jaded don't overthink it. Hobby knife and pliers to take out and clean the edges are the only things you need.

My first mg was a Deathsycthe so don't stress about it.

Using 5-7 blades on mg is overkill and a waste. Get some quality blades.

I used 2 blades to build 5 kits with no stub mark in site. I can show pics of any of my kits.

If you wanna use gloves you could but just make sure your hands are washed and dry. Cut away from your fingers always.

I would recommend sandpaper if you ever plan to spray your kit with paint or top coat. I actually went back to one of my first kits and use paper and looks way better.

It doesn't really matter which mg you start off since it is more of a time thing rather than a difficulty thing.

I mean unless your nose is inches from the kit you won't need a face mask. But I recommend something to cover your mouth/ nose when spraying.

I have yet to build the sandrock but it should be straight build outside of the weapons. One thing I recommend after building 3 of the wing kits is to be very careful you aren't cutting into the wrong party in the runner.
I really don't see myself spray painting a kit in my tiny ass room, but thanks for the advice. Maybe at some other point like after 2 or 3 of these I'll think about sandpaper at least.

Gloves aren't necessary for sandpaper. I cut off slivers of sandpaper sheets and glue them to popsicle sticks. Works great and makes things easier for wet standing since you can dunk the entire sandpaper in without soaking your hands too. The only drawback is that the adhesiveness of the glue eventually gives way from continually soaking it in water but this is sometimes/often(?) around the point that piece of sandpaper is about to lose its usefulness anyway, so it's not a big deal.

For blades, I'm still on the first knife I started with lol. I love the knife in the Tamiya basic tool kit.

Cutting toward you is something that works better in some situations but I do not recommend it until you're experienced enough to control the blade and even still you should avoid it unless you can't find another way to clean up the piece.

You guys have this down to a science. Is the first build even fun?

The first build takes awhile, but I found it fun. I did my first build in October and I enjoyed it. Get a MS you like, I think seeing it start to come together is really satisfying. Just don't worry about making it perfect. As people have said, you can build a model with just clippers if you want to. Hobby knife, sandpaper, top coat, all of that stuff is extra and just helps make your finished kit look better.

The only kit I could see myself going all out for would be that expensive as fuck MG P Bandai Altron and no way in hell would that be my first kit. I'll probably get MG Sandrock or MG Shenlong.

I started simple. I started with a HG GM Custom which is one of my favorite grunt suits, then built a HG Ez8. I'm now (slowly) working on a MG RX-78-2. HG are definitely nice for learning as they don't have a complex inner skeleton or moving parts.

So my first kit should be the HG Revive Gundam MkII then?

What kind of gloves are you using? Wouldn't want something that hurts dexterity.

I went to home depot and tried out all the gloves until I found one that's comfortable. I usually just take them off when I need start assembling each section.

Either a grey Gundam marker or a .3 mechanical pencil.

That particular kit will not need much panel lining because of the dark colors, so it's really up to you whether you even want to panel line at all.

If you do use either of those methods, both of them are very dummy friendly. You can get outside the lines with the marker, then quickly smear it away with a q-tip or even your finger. And you can erase stray pencil marks with an eraser.

I might just go as barebones with this as humanely possible then. Possible to panel line later?

Jaded get the tamiya kit. pretty cheap.

second for barebones panel line. get these, they are the easiest to use.
http://www.gundamplanet.com/tools/gundam-marker/gundam-marker-fine-point-for-panel-lines-465.html

get grey and blk. that's pretty much all you need.

i found using pencil is tricky as well as the fine point gundam marker. it took me a while to learn how to get the lines even w/ the latter two.

but the brush type i linked is fool proof and easy to wipe off.

yeah, pretty much. i felt the same re: panel line but it's extremely easy and fun since you can make mistakes and redo it. i was scared to do it too in the beginning.

with the brush type marker you can even use your fingers to wipe off, and it goes on evenly.
Gundam Planet seems to be cheaper than Amazon regarding that kit by 15 bucks. I wonder if shipping is expensive cause wow. So many places I can order these from.

i live like 2 blks away from gundam planet, are you going to the GAF meetup this weekend? not sure if i'm going to go or i'd stop in and pick the stuff up and bring it.

I actually thought that was last week. What time does it start and where's that again?
donno, i haven't checked but i think it's 6 or 8pm sat in the city on 3rd street.

anyways, it's looks like it's about 10 bucks shipping flat rate so if you do order from gundam planet grab a few items along the way or wait till it's cheaper on amazon, it looks like the ones linked on amazon are from 3rd party and nothing from amazon directly.

it'll be cheaper but amazon usually gets stuff late.

Sounds like it makes more sense going through Gundam Planet any way, granted GP has a lot of kits out of stock at the moment. I wonder how often they restock. Where is that Gundam Planet you're by? Jersey?

Finally had my big Wing order shipped.

Grabbed my daughter a BB Knight Zero Gundam as well cause she wants to build her own.

Started my next order as well. Broke down and ordered an IBO kit, some blade replacemnts and I think I'll grab the MP Ulta Magnus so I can replace his head with the KO Magnus.

I held out this long but as a modeler I keep wanting to see that damn frame up close.

So I grabbed Leo 2.0.

Thanks for that!! I thought they were two different models.
Edit:
I can't get off Gundam Planet...Why is Wing Gundam Ver Ka so fucking sexy? It's a bit boring on the show, but holy shit that MG is sexy as fuck.

I think I'm in the minority but I don't like most of the ver. Ka Wing redesigns. I think I liked some of them at first but the more time passes the more I realize I like the Okawara designs best. On the Wing, the color scheme doesn't seem to have any particular purpose and it's too bright, the design itself seems like largely an afterthought, stealing 90% of the Wing Zero EW's body wholesale, the accessories don't have the personality of the original (the original Wing's shield opens up and a burst of steam or cold air or something shoots out along with the beam saber - awesome!), and the wings are these big, blocky things which aren't as coordinated as the little 'feathers' of the original Wing. The Okawara design has this '90s charm to it I love like those yellow vents right near the chest gem, and it has some other nice touches not on the Katoki design like those thrusters on the back of the legs.

The only Katoki redesign I definitely like more than the original is Altron. Altron TV is an overdesigned mess. As a kid, I thought it was kinda cool but I didn't really process everything that was going on with it because there was so much going on. Looking at it now, it has way too much and the elements don't all really mesh. It kept the Shenlong's shield but it's kinda like a useless appendage now. The twin dragon fangs and double beam trident are fine, a pretty standard upgrade for a Gundam. Cool. But the wings are just too much. No reason for Altron to have wings or a tail laser for that matter. I guess Okawara was going for a dragon motif but he lays it on too thick. It's the same reason I don't like the Deathscythe Hell EW. Deathscythe Hell TV tries the same idea of "Death" as a MS but doesn't lay it on so thick and has that awesome beam cloak which deflects everything. Cool! (and because the cloak isn't always in the TV version whenever it is open it gives a feeling of "it's time for business")

I don't mind the MG ver ka, but I'm not the hugest fan of the feather EW version myself. I don't mind Endless Waltz Sandrock though and yeah I'll admit the Endless Waltz Altron is a less busy step up, but I also did like how the tv version gave it a weapon for every situation. I'll probably wind up building both at some point if I really do get into this sort of thing.

Im of this opinion as well.

Wing TV to is such a horrid design. The line art looks like a 20 meter Gundam squished to 16 meters. Its horrid and unbalanced for somethung meant to be mobile.

The Ver Ka is sexy, colors are amazing, Wings look badass and like they would have enough thursters in them for high speed. It also being mecha design instead of Angel Wings keep it looking like a weapon instead of a runway model and making it better then Zero to me.

Yeah the whole design just screams don't mess with this thing, I love it.

I agree.

The more intense sheild and longer buster, with guard and extra rounds is far more bad ass the Wing TV's three and done.
Just looked at Shenlong Ver Ka, looks pretty damn cool, though they redesigned the dragon fang a lot. They really need to do an Altron tv version Ver Ka.

That is what Altron EW is.

Many dont realize that Nataku doesnt exist, its a title given to all suits that WuFei pilots.

Altron EW is meant to be Altron TV just as Wing Zero Ew is to TV or Sandrock Kai EW is to Sandrock Kai TV.

Wufei didnt actually get a third suit until Epyon White( which he also calls Nataku).

Ok, that makes more sense. I'll rephrase that statement then. They need to do a badass looking Altron that isn't "WTF!!" expensive. Seriously. Why is that thing P Bandai exclusive. Thing looks fucking slick as snot.

I pray they change their mind. Then they can release it with full equipment pack from Glory which gives it the missing armaments from the TV version.

Then they can release Epyon White. I hope the MG Epyon Ver Ka isn't too hard to make cause that thing looks sweet.
MG Epyon Ver Ka is the best and most unique of the Wing MGs, its easily the one I recommend the most for people who want only one Wing MG.

Id buy 2 of the White's and I have hopes we will see it one day given the runner layout of Epyon EW.

Yeah that would be the one Wing kit I get myself. Pretty much the Ver Ka's from Wing I really like are Wing, Sandrock, Shenlong and Epyon. Where in the fuck I'd put those in my room? No god damn clue, but those are the one's I'd buy if the MkII I want for my starter goes well enough. Anybody here know if Dyames and Kyrios are hard builds? What the shit eating fuck? Why is there no fucking MG for Dynames and Kyrios? Fucking Bandai!!!

You can often Google the name of a kit with "review" at the end to get a decent idea of what people thought of it.

Once you build a few kits, you can look at pics of the parts and manual and get a decent idea of the complexity. And of how many stickers you'll be dealing with. Personally, the fewer stickers the better.

The high grades of Kyrios and Dynames are both pretty easy. The Kyrios does have too many foil stickers imo but the actual build is easy. I don't know about the non-grade 1:100, but I dobut they would be difficult at all.

Yeah most MG from 00 are Exia or 00 variants. It bothers me too.

The thing you'll start to see is that all kinds of designs get turned into HGs. The main characters, sure. But also weird one-offs, side characters, novelties, etc. Because HGs are cheapest to design and produce.

MGs require more work and engineering, so only more popular designs get MGs.

Then RG and PG are pretty much only the most popular designs.

But I wanted MG Kyrios...why did they need sixty different versions of Exia and 00? And who buys all of those? It's like the Nissan Skyline equivalent of Gran Turismo to Gundam.
