The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

So I finished Gundam SEED. There were a few missteps and what the fuck moments (
tons of early retreading of 0079, Kira somehow surviving a mobile suit reactor explosion for no reason, the three really dumb pilots of the Earth's Gundams, and Kira turning out to be the chosen one perfect Coordinator
), but it was pretty alright in the end. And considering how Rau's entire motivation was literally just
him being mad
, he was pretty compelling as the main villain at the end, despite the final battle against Kira lacking that "rivalry" feeling since that dynamic was always between him and Mu.

Mu and Rau were great, Athrun and Cagalli were good, everyone else was alright. I was looking forward to Destiny, but Macross SDF comes first.

Yes go watch Macross since it's God Tier before you tackle the clusterfuck that is Destiny. I really need to watch Macross again. I think the show and the animation has aged just fine.

If you're watching Macross for the first time, you can't go wrong with either sub or dub. ADV's dub was pretty passable (though Vic Mignogna as Hikaru took some getting used to).

That and for some reason on the rip I watched, the English audio track was much clearer sounding than the Japanese track.

If you want to buy it though I believe the volumes are on Amazon.

Why is Edward Elric piloting a Valkyrie?

i'd watch the japan audio for that at least the last episode for macross plus where the whole philharmonic OST is missing and replaced during the fight scene.

but the english dub has Bryan Cranston doing the voice for Isamu =)
Frustratingly, the Japanese Blu Ray restores the proper soundtrack for the final episode on the English audio track, but it's re-dubbed with a different cast. Makes me wish they'd re-dubbed the whole thing for some consistency at least, even if it meant losing the old cast (which I was rather fond of).

I at least have Trigun on DVD so that's not new to me.
Such a good show and Vash/Woolfwood is a shippers dream lol.

Seriously though while I can certain see and even agree with Dabid's outlook on it, I really do suggest at least one go of Plus in English as its superb.

Finally now that the Freedom 2 reviews are hitting, the transformable canons make a bit more sense. A lot of those flaps add extra fin detail to the wings. They still look garbage when deployed with the canons, but in the open wing poses they look pretty neat.

Man Unicorn is incredible. Not watching the reXXX whatever its titled right now just the og ovas and the pacing, visuals, and twist on newtypes are spectacular. Hoping we see another UC story line as good as this in the future.

IBO is already too many episodes too long to reach this height of hype even though I'm really enjoying the more grounded, personal story of Tekkaden, the cinematic opera of Unicorn is unrivaled for me as of now.

I have joined the club.

I just bought my first Gundam model since I was in high school along with a starter tool set and some detailing markers. I decided to go with a High Grade just to dip my toes in the water, but I'm really excited to dive into the Real Grade sets if I end up enjoying the build as much as I expect to.

#162 Wing Gundam.

Deciding on the specific model ended up being a surprisingly difficult decision. As mentioned above, I am buying it more as a dry run than anything else. I didn't want to get one that I would prefer to build later as Real Grade or Master Grade, but I also didn't want to just go with a random design that I have no interest in. This is mainly to get some practice with the side cutters and the Gundam detailing markers, as well as to decide if I want to proceed with 1/144 scale or go up to 1/100 scale (or mix and match).

I'm also watching Gundam Wing at the moment, so the decision kind of makes sense. I actually initially wanted to get Heavyarms, but I could only find the Endless Waltz High Grade and not the initial series version.

To you or anyone else: Any beginner's tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think that's the one I bought...still just a torso. I think the legs are my least favorite part of a build.

That's why I went with High Grade. TBH I was a bit intimidated by runner count of the Real Grade sets. I didn't want to start one and then not finish it.

Not all HG's are created equal. I got the HG Revive original Gundam and that has way less runners than the HGAC Wing.

Good man. The HGAC Wing is a wonderful kit. Highly detailed and articulate but also a simple and fun and largely stress-free build. A couple warnings on this kit:

There is one, annoying part of the build - The green, crescent foil sticker used at the base of the shield. Getting it *just* right is very difficult and, being a foil sticker, you have only so much leeway with reapplying it before you damage it in some way and it looks awful. So be careful. Many HGs have allot of stickers of varying levels of annoyance in applying correctly but the Wing is mercifully light on that end.

Second, a couple pieces may be loose when you finish building it. The v-fin may not be totally secure, and the chest vent(s) may just fall off outright. Use a dab of glue to keep them in place.

avoid building a MG Gundam wing kit for a bit though.

Thanks for the tips. I built some Gundam models in high school and there seemed to be a few tricky bits with each one. I will be sure to be careful with the sticker application to the shield.

Regarding the glue, this is yet another reason I decided to go with a High Grade first. Even though they prominently say "no glue required" I had assumed that there would be a few static pieces that would be well served by glue.

-Any specific tips on glue? I'm probably just going to order something from amazon.

The Revive series is a sub-line of High Grade, right? Can you elaborate about this? Is there any reason I should look ahead to Real Grade (aside from the complexity)?

Why do you say I should wait on MG? My main thought regarding Master Grade is simply that I might prefer the 1/100 scale once I actually have them in my hands.

I have built almost 20 kits within the past year but I will say I am noob compared to other people here like Dave, shun, and Beth.

Revive kits are easier to build, way cheaper for same quality and posing, and easier to hunt down. You could walk into any B&N store right now and pickup a couple.

MG kits are great but take way more time, concentration, and cost more. Can you imagine messing up a part or 2 of a 46 dollar kit. lol u will cry.

Practicing on 2 revive kits is the best way to go since you can get them for like 11 dollars.

I repeat do not start with a MG Heavy Arms or DeathScythe for your first mg because even if you build them correctly imo they require more resources to truly shine. For example I think the Heavy arms need paint on all the missiles and the Death needs glue due to loose skirt pieces.

Mg are definitely some of the most rewarding ktis you can build though and will look amazing on display for example

Make sure you read the review before buying a MG kit, some of them is a pain to build without a lot of glue and putty work.

yes this can not be stressed enough but I can't really think of MG kits that require glue unless your trying to hold accessories in place for a permanent pose

Edit: Gundam 00 1/100 kits being restock for USA

NovenD's Turn A Gundam review: SPOILER TAGS FOR STUFF FROM THE ENDING

THE GOOD:

1. Mom not only watched the entire show, she actually enjoyed it.

2. HARRY

3. The mechs(cameo zakus and friends aside) look like nothing we've ever seen in a Gundam show.

4. Loran is a protagonist with pacifist ideals who doesn't suck. Thumbs up Tomino.

5.
GUIN BECAME LIQUID SNAKE AT THE END HOLY SHIT

6. The whole soundtrack rules except for the second OP which sucks.

7. HARRY

8. Like any good Tomino show, character's dialogue occasionally descends into incomprehensible nonsense. I wouldn't have it any other way.

9.
Ghingham and his forces were such jobbers

10.
Only a few thousand people died! That's nothing by Gundam standards.

11. The mech fights were good as hell. A++

12. LOL at what Kihel and Dianna pull at the end.
Kihel-Dianna: Let's tell basically nobody that we stole each other's lives! I'm sure my mother won't mind that the person she thinks is her daughter went off into the woods to die of space cancer!
Dianna-Kihel: What about Sochie?
Kihel-Dianna: Fuck Sochie!

THE BAD:

1.
Seriously tho poor Sochie

2. Whatever the fuck was happening here:

FINAL VERDICT:

Show is batshit insane

loved every minute of it

5/5

6/5 because Loran's crossdressing game is on point and HARRY

GET IT

Turn A is totally rad To me, that was the "End" of classic gundam. For the most part, the franchise really hasn't had anything knew to say since then, with the exception of 00 which started off as a pretty cool post-9/11 take on the franchise before devolving into UC tropes.

Yoko Kano da god. Fantastic OST.

If this is as good as the MG this will be in the top of 3 RG for sure.

I'm hoping it retains the little Quantum Burst gimmick the GN Condensers on the arms and legs had in the MG.

[SUPER LATE EDIT: If any of you didn't know about that little gimmick, here you go:]

EDIT: Seeing them side by side, the head/v-fin on the 2.0 looks kinda oversized. Other than that, yeah, I have to get this soon.

Main body of Lightning Z Gundam done. Pretty sturdy for a HG just like the R-GyaGya in the same line that I built. Pretty straightforward, not too many odd parts and a good amount of detail. PS don't panel line after drinking a bit lol. Cleaned it up more after taking pictures but lol. The bit I did yesterday without drinking and then tonight after having a few beers with dinner.... dat difference. Very few stickers too which is nice.

All thats left to do is the accessories, wings, and gun to finish it off.

Any tips regarding where I should go to check reviews for models so I know what I'm getting into before buying? Are there clear reviews that call out problematic bits? Or is it more a matter of reading/watching reviews and hearing what people have to say?

Also, any tips on what type of glue I should get? It sounds like I should have some glue handy for my HGAC Wing build.

good stuff! getting into gunpla =)
Thanks man! Your Gundam posts in the action figure thread totally inspired me to get back into this.

If you just want picture reviews, dalong.net is a good place. The site itself is in Korean but it's not hard at all to navigate.

As for Youtube reviews: Some people might recommend Prime92, I'm not a big fan myself but give a few reviews a watch and see what you think. For older kits (Build Fighters and before), I highly recommend rrobbert184. His video reviews are usually split into parts (Unbox, Parts, MS, Transformation if it has one, and final verdict) and he's very thorough.

For more recent stuff I personally watch Mecha Gaikotsu, though he's mostly RGs and HGs. He also has a nice video that recommends the top 5 MG kits for beginners that you should give a watch.

Also keep an eye on the HobbyLink Japan YouTube channel. They often do live build videos and sometimes will have kit reviews in their episodes.

That sums it up^^^

Yo my Barnes and Noble is fully stacked with Ibo kits. I am talking stand plates, hg, and 1/100 kits.

They even have the guison/rebake 1/100 which is two kits in one.

I might spurge and pick up the barbatos 1/100 but I don't wanna sea with stickers

To add to an already great list of suggestions for YouTube reviewers, I'd like to suggest vegeta8259 and jabman025.

Also, wtb news on the Ka Signature Ex-S Gundam. Like a price and release date..
