The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

Thanks a lot man! Currently on the 5th episode of 08th MS Team, really enjoying it so far, even if it seems to be very different in tone to the move trilogy!

08th MS Team is my favorite Gundam. I think it achieves the original goal of Gundam. To get away from super robots and make a realistic mecha show about war and soldiers. I would love another Gundam series like 08th MS Team.

I'm not a big fan of the Seed series. The mobile suit design is excellent, but overall it just wasn't very good. Too much stock footage, awful characters, etc. I plan on watching it anyway, but I don't have high expectations.

I take it Victory isn't held to very high regards? What I liked about Victory was the characters. They were all pretty interesting and I liked the diversity in the cast. There were, at least comparatively, a lot of female and non-white characters in semi-important roles. The mobile suit design was pretty bad (what's with all the motorcycles in space?) and the premise for the overall conflict was pretty weak though. I also may have liked it more due to the last full length Gundam I watched was the hot mess that was ZZ.
Gundam ZZ takes two viewings to like, I didn't like it the first time I saw it either, but it's better the second time cause you know what to expect. Victory I liked cause of the characters as well and it's brutal depiction of the horrors of war. That shit with Uso's mom was straight fucked up though. My favorite insane Gundam female will always be Katejina, she'll never be trumped.
I don't see why you'd be afraid of Seed Destiny if you liked Victory.
Seed Destiny didn't do a single thing right. All it did was throw out Athrun's character development from the previous series, make Kira look like a preachy douche, give us a more emotionally unstable Kamille, without the hotness of Emma to smack some fucking sense into him and not give him a woman as nice as Fa...fuck that show...didn't even get the Four Murasame plotline right.

I biggest complaint about ZZ is the tonal shift in the middle. If it kept the goofy super-robo junk from the first half or the very grim tone from the second half throughout I think it would be fine, but instead you get half of the show using Scooby-Doo sound effects and the other half being more reminiscent of Zeta. I also don't understand how Bright could give command of his ship over to Beecha who has probably betrayed the Argama at least 3 separate times while also constantly trying to steal their mobile suits. Hell, I think Beecha and Mondo are the cause of most of my hatred for that show.

I had a hard time understanding Katejina. Her becoming crazy and fighting for Zanscare seemed to appear out of nowhere. Maybe I missed something, but I don't remember anything significant happening to her between the time she leaves to try and be a spy and when she turns evil.

Katejina got turned by Chronicle when he saved her from being raped by those two soldiers, then she went full on cyber newtype, so it didn't exactly come out of nowhere, some it is hamfisted, but it is there.

I remember that scene. I can see why she fell for Chronicle. That event must have been more significant than I thought it was. Soon after that event she tells Uso that she is going to Zanscare to spy on them. Was she lying when she said that? It was that or she turned sometime between when she leaves for space and the next time Uso runs into her. Either way it makes sense, I was just expecting a defined moment or flashback or something throughout and I never got it which is fine.

Oh man, I completely missed the part about the announcement of the Blu-ray release of the original series that they'd also gotten the rights to series like Gundam X. I'm totally buying that one as soon as it comes out. Probably Zeta too I guess.

And I never watched G-Reco, but I randomly decided to look up what kits they had on Amazon and I really like the designs for all the suits in the series. The only one I'm kind of lukewarm on is the main Gundam itself. Really tempted to pick up at least one of the HG kits since they're pretty cheap, though I have no idea which one and I'm not really into the whole painting thing to complete them.

I think it's something she believed at the time she wrote it but Katejina seems like a person that doesn't exactly get herself. Kind of like Reccoa, but not as bad though. She just found herself caught up in a situation she didn't expect, but she's not a victim though at all. Eventually she was just the most manipulative thing with two legs, she just wanted to play with the feelings of both Uso and Chronicle.

Unless Zeta is blu-ray I'll probably skip it, seeing as I've still got the two Anime Legends sets Bandai put out.

I'm hoping the stuff that's been released before will get the BD treatment.

I completely missed those during the first release. I own the G Gundam set and my sister has the Gundam Wing set. Also got her the Destiny collections, though she'd have preferred the just the first Seed series.

I'm really hoping so as well, though the fact that Turn A appears to only have gotten DVD releases makes me wonder if they actually will. Was there ever a Blu-ray release for G Gundam?

Also, found my old Gundam Official Guide from Animerica recently when going through some things. This thing was pretty much my go-to for information back in the day when I didn't have easy access to the internet or at least knowledge of good sites to check out back then.

Hopefully we will get the original OPs and EDs.

I seem to remember the Zeta release a while back didn't use the original vocal tracks.

I've still got mine sitting on my bookshelf. It's still a good read, even today.

It made me aware of a lot of the series I was completely unaware of since I think I was only familiar with a few of what they had shown on Toonami at the time.

I also learned of G-Saviour. And then decided to never look into that one again.

G Gundam hasn't gotten a Blu Ray release in Japan yet, but I think it's only a matter of time.

Sunrise has partnered with the Right Stuf to distribute Gundam and they just announced the original Gundam series is arriving on Blu Ray. So assuming the Right Stuf is getting their authoring tools in place, I'm hopeful the other Gundam series that have gotten Blu Ray releases (like Wing) won't be too far behind.

I remember being asked when I bought it what Gundam shows I'd seen. I told him all the ones that'd been on Toonami/Adult Swim to that point and he was all "No, you haven't seen the real things."

I understand now he was probably referring to how the shows were edited or possibly referring to the shows with original japanese audio and subs, but innocent middle school me didn't understand and thought he was just stupid. XD

I've always felt like the tonal shift is what helps make the last ~30 eps of ZZ so great. For as wacky and inconsistent as the show is at the beginning it does do a good job of setting up the personalities of the core cast. Then, when the serious shit kicks off, you see them grow and rise up to the challenges before them....but they still stay true to who they are. Also helps that just one a base level I find the ZZ cast much more enjoyable than the Zeta cast.

I will always have a problem with how the swept Puru under the carpet. Puru was like a sister to him and Judau couldn't even shed a tear for her.

What series have received them so far? The original series I know and all the more recent series, but has stuff like Zeta or Wing gotten one yet?

At the very least we'll get reprints of the other series, but hopefully they do so.

I never really knew anyone who'd seen the others series for quite some time and by the time I did I was well aware and had seen the original series and a number of the OVAs.

That could have been it, though I could swear they aired unedited episodes of Wing during Midnight Run or something.

I have some morbid curiosity about what the film is actually like, but am not sure it'd be worth the time to ever actually try and watch it.

Off the top of my head:
0079
Zeta
ZZ
Wing
Turn A
SEED HD
SEED DESTINY HD
Victory (will release later this year iirc)

Not sure about the ovas or CCA/F91

As someone who sadly owns the DVD... No. It's not worth it.

Just build the HG kit and call it a day.

So most of the UC mainlines that were really important and the side series that we super popular. Turn A is the surprise there since I wasn't aware of that show being a hit. And I have to question even more why we are only getting the DVDs now. Is there some weird thing with Blu-ray getting released over here from Japan? I feel like I've seen weird instances where if there's a dub it'll only be on the DVD and things like that.

I'd guess at least CCA has gotten a Blu-ray release.

I'll keep that in mind then. I'd laugh if they RightStuf ended up reprinting that one.

Japan is super afraid of reverse importing. Their Turn A set is relatively new as well.

I have a feeling we'll see a Turn A BD set from Rightstuf during the tail end of their releases.

Me personally, all I want is Wing blu-rays and for them to finally release STARGAZER over here.

Just paid for my Turn A Moonlight Butterfly wing set. ~$30 is kind of a dumb amount to pay for some accessories and a stand, but Turn A needs to be complete. I've been waiting years for this.

Remind me to buy these new dvd releases when they come out so I don't forget and they get expensive. What sets have been released recently? Just Turn-A?

Because we don't charge the same obscene amounts they do? Is that why all the Aniplex Blu-rays are always so insanely expensive?

Hopefully so. I think I'll wait a bit and see on that series in hopes that they do.

I've turned a bit lukewarm on Wing over the years, but I'd probably still pick it up to have it. That was the Seed OVA, right? Was that any good?

Actually do the Blu-rays really up the quality for those old series?

That for the HG or the MG? I just found out that they recently did an MG for Turn X which looks pretty great.

Gonna pay for mine soon. Don't mind the price, it's an exclusive item.

The wings and stand are for the MG. Also, the Turn X MG is amazing. It's such a beautiful and different build. One of my favorite (non ver. Ka) kits of recent memory.

It's not a terrible price. It's more the shipping that got me. Wonder if the box is much bigger than I expected.

Also, I probably would've paid close to 100 for a damn set of wings. If I had to buy another MG Turn A I would've. I need a complete Turn A.

It looks great and I even saw some set ups that actually had the whole bits aspect of the Turn X represented which is a neat feature that's possible with it. Definitely on my list of kits to get at some point.

Really want to get the MG Turn A as well as I've always had a fondness for that suit design. I don't know what it is about it, but something just appeals to me with it.

It's a great kit, for sure. I've had mine since it first released (2007). It gets a little flimsy with age, though (but I guess that's true for a lot of models).

The mold has a bit of degradation but, having built it recently, is still quite good. The one thing I will say is the mold was degraded on one of the chest missile covers to the point it no longer clicks into the chest. It just falls out. I put a little bit of that blue tac in there and that holds it just fine and still opens and closes, so it was a minor issue overall.

The problematic area on mine is the torso joint. It's gotten incredibly loose. I've tried to tighten it before, but being 8 years old now I'm not sure doing it again would help any more.

Plus these days it can't hold the beam rifle for jack. I usually just have it in a standing pose with no weapons.

Geez, hard to believe it's been that long. This was my fourth MG kit (after Freedom/Strike Freedom/Strike Noir).

Almost finished on the Dahack HG I got, though unfortunately I clipped one of the beam saber effect pieces for the four swords and can't get it slotted in.

What does one do to do lining on kits? Do you need a full on paint set or are their special markers?

You just need a good thin black marker and an eraser.

I usually use the Gundam Markers with the super fine tips. The top ones in this image.

Huh, I really should get a GM03 marker... I usually only use gray for white parts and black on everything else.

There are lots of different ways to panel line kit, but I would say the default beginner way is to use the thin Gundam Markers specifically designed for the task. They come in 3 colors brown, black and grey. I would point you away from using pure black unless you're lining grey or another dark color, though, as it makes the lines stand out too much for my taste. It's all personal preference in the end. I buy mine from HLJ, but with cheap shipping it'll take a while to get to you.

They markers come in two types. The traditional small tip ones that act like normal markers.

Then there are the new pour type. With these, you just tap them on the line and capillary action fills in the rest. They leave a little dot where you tapped, so you have to wipe the excess with a Q-Tip or something. These are my personal favorite, because they provide a really consistent finish across the entire line.

Thanks for the recommendations. Rather relieved it's such a simple method to go about it.

Also managed to find a way to fix that beam saber piece with the Dehack so it's all good now. Really liked how it turned out and looking forward to trying out an RG soon.
