P-Bandai is a necessary evil for getting out a lot of kits that just don't have the interest for mass market. Some times there are head scratchers like Banshee Norn in there, but I'm certain they aren't throwing things up there arbitrarily. Yeah, you end up paying like 50% more for the kit, but it's better than the kit not existing at all.

What Bandai needs to do is give BlueFin access to their B-Premium releases for GunPla like they do with DBZ and Power Ranger Figuarts. They should at least be able to put the Wing kits out here, since Wing is bigger in the West than Japan. Either that or they need to fully open Bandai Premium up to Western customers.

They already have. I've been seeing P-Bandai stuff and previously event-exclusive kits show up on the shelves at the hobbytowns around here.

Wait, really? I'm really surprised Blue-Fin hasn't put a huge push in for the Tallgeese III or Banshee Norn. If those kits got general distribution on Amazon, they'd be massive.

I see, thanks.

I have one more Gunpla question: I kinda want to get some of the 0083 HGM models. I don't have an airbrush and honestly have never painted a kit before, just done panel lines. How far could I get with just Gundam Markers?

Thanks Shun for all the Akatsuki info! SamuelDecal just got back to me and he still has some. I'm going to grab that really quick. Looking forward to finally having a kit of a favorite design of mine. It looks really cool.

I see, thanks.

It's doable, but I doubt most people would be able to do much with them unless they're really, really good with paint markers. They're basically blank plastic if you don't paint them, so they take a crap ton of work.

The Neue Ziel isn't too bad, though.

I might suggest buying the pre-painted regular figures of those 2 and HGs of the others. That Dendrobium seems next to impossible for a novice modeler.

You are much better off practicing with hand painting by buying your own acrylic paints and primer. It's cheaper in the long run that way and it gives you skills for if you plan on detailing and airbrushing later anyway.

You don't even need to get a marker for panel lining. You can do all your panel lining with a paint brush via wash.

You can even thin your acrylic paints with Future acrylic floor wax for a gloss coat.

I'd recommend just going and buying your own paints because 60ml goes a very long way after thinning the paints properly.

No problem, great that Samuel still has some in stock since he is one of the cheapest option. You'll have a great time building it. I really love mine and I'm so glad I finally have a 1/100 Akatsuki that isn't that garish reflecting gold like the Phenex and the HG Akatsuki. Just remember to gloss coat and sand.

Finally finished my SD Delta Plus with gold paint. Going to take better pictures tomorrow but in the meantime:

Good shit, you missed a spot on the forehead camera but looks good. Better than the vanilla Riddhe colours.

I've watched X and Turn A recently a G blows both of them out of the water from a character and plot cohesion point of view. G is a tightly constructed Gundam show. All thriller, no filler.

No way, man. Gundam X has the best character development of the franchise. It uses actual subtlety and stuff too to communicate feelings and ideas. Threw me for a loop when I watched it. I mean, it's still Gundam, and it goes only so far, but it's good.

Bandai MG Hyaku-Shiki 2.0 and Dragon Momoko MG Akatsuki Gundam comparison and review.

Thanks allot. I've been on the fence about taking the dive here. I've been hesitant about picking up any gold kits. I had a bad experience many years back on my MG Hyper Mode God Gundam and strayed away from them since.

I knew this one is a different design, but I didn't know the underlying plastic is yellow-goldish (definitely much better than the God Gundam, unsurprisingly). Could you sand the side with a nub and just gloss coat afterward to hide it, or is that a no go?

Honestly to me the Dendrobium is like almost all white anyways, aside from panel lines and a few grey/black bits and the thrusters... and the beam saber, I guess. The nearly-bare kit looks pretty fine to me. =/ I can see how the l'il Gerbera Tetra looks ridiculous as plain plastic, though.

Bandai has upped their game with gold and Dragon Momoko did a great job. It isn't the same kind of gold as the MG Hyper Mode or the Phenex so your nub problem is much much better especially with the underrating. It's more similar to Titanium Finish kits but with undergating.

The underlying plastic is clear white for the Hyaku Shiki 2.0 and vomit/yellow gold for the Akatsuki.

Both kits during the gold plating/finishing process start off with layers of gloss black underneath the glossy gold finish.

The Akatsuki is almost completely undergated so the bad nubs only occur on the handful of pieces that aren't so no side nubs. When you cut the nubs off it will seem black because of the layer of gloss black between the plastic and the gold. Sanding would strip both finishes and go straight to plastic.

What I did was to marginally cut nubs parallel to the runner while pulling away. It gave me a cleaner cut and I folded over the stray gold finish with my fingernails to mitigate the nub marks.

I would only sand the inside of the kit so that everything snap fits better. I wouldn't sand and gloss the gold that wasn't undergated. I would either fold over the finish or touchup paint since the Akatsuki is similar colour to Tamiya Gold Leaf.

Holy shit, that look 10 times better than the original NG 1/100 Akatsuki. Did you gloss or matte coat the non-metallic part? Based on the photo, the gold is perfect as it is, I don't think I can do a better paint job than that.

I really want to pick it up once I finish some backlogs.

I see, thanks.

I wouldn't recommend Gundam Marker for painting, just buy some paint brush and vallejo paint. Vallejo model color is perfect for handbrushing, it cost around $3 a bottle, a lot local hobby store carries them. You just dilute it with water to 2% milk consistency, then start brushing multiple layers.

You also need primer before putting on paints, get Krylon Gray Primer, just make sure you get the one for plastic. Future floor finish for gloss coat, and Krylon against for matte finish.

Bandai Premium is reissuing the Crossbones X-2 and X-3. The problem? They're doing it the same month as Altron. Why load up one month with so much stuff? Oh well, it should at least drop their price on the secondary market.

For me, the red, blue and yellow are really important parts of the Dendrobium's color scheme, but of course different people value different things. I also don't like seeing the Mobile Armor part without some sort of breakup with different shades of white and grey, RG style.

If you want it, I might recommend picking it up ASAP. Third Party kits have a tendency to disappear out of the market completely. Try to find some of the old resin kits. It's next to impossible.

I agree, the 1/100 NG is more anime accurate but this gold finish is much much better.

I glossed everything with Future. It gave it a couple extra layers of protection but it made snap fitting a little harder than usual.

Pick it up as soon as you can and keep in mind the sanding flaws because of how tight the kit is in some areas.

If you mess up cutting out the pieces and putting it together, the Akatsuki's finish is very similar to Tamiya Gold Leaf so buy a jar of that and make do so that you get a similar color finish.

I'm fond of the two tone gold/orange-gold but it might not be everyone's taste. So throw on Gold Leaf on those orange-gold parts if it bothers you.

So, I got the initial construction done on my Hi-Nu Ver Ka. I'm really glad I decided to go with lavender and creamy grey rather than Vikings colors. It looks pretty clean. The decals might break it up a bit. We'll see.

Also, I opted for the solid-color funnels like the redesign Hi-Nu that we all know and love. Dreading doing these water slides...

awgUEiH.jpg

Then i can flat coat. A lot of fun, but I think I'm officially in the 'paint if you want a new color, just clear coat if you like the plastic color" camp seeing how much work it is to paint, lol. Any way, LSNu Tigers colors can get rekt.

Nice work there. I adore the Hi-Nu design. It'll look good in whatever colors you put on it. It's just got so much shelf presence.

As for the "Hi-Nu we know and love", ain't nothin gonna beat the original Izubuchi design.

That is the Hi-Nu. The dumb straight up Nu recolor with different wings is pretty much an insult to the Hi-Nu name. Also, tiger stripes are the best. The almost blue purple of the original plastic is absolutely perfect. I'm so glad they captured that on the Ver. Ka. It's a really hard color to match.

The funnel fade is really divisive, it seems. Some people adore it, some people prefer solid funnels. As you can see, I'm in the solid-camp. I tried to get something closer to the EXVS Full Boost suit.

Are they ever going to issue new HG Turn-A kits? I love Kapool and Flat, and even like the Sumo, but I want the modern articulation and better baseline plastic coloring that the older kits just don't offer.

Also, I finally started Victory Gundam, and am really not into it. I keep reminding myself that ZZ didn't get good until about 15 episodes in, but even ZZ had Marshmallow and Bright to keep it watchable. I can't bring myself to care about a single character in Victory yet, and I'm at episode 16... They've just headed to space in the most recent episode. I'm worried that just like with F91, it's too far removed from the one-year war era for me, and it feels more like another timeline.

Finally, just going to throw out some opinions on non-UC series I've watched:
  • G Fighter - Complete garbage. I like the Devil Gundam (the one that is a Gundam coming out of a giant Gundam head), but mostly because it's so ridiculous that it circles back around to being awesome.
  • Wing - The first Gundam series I ever saw, and I'll definitely credit it for getting me into Gundam in general. However, it's mostly terrible, and I doubt I'll ever be able to stomach a repeated viewing.
  • X - I remember comparing it to Wing a lot, but now that I think back on it, that was probably incorrect. I'll probably watch this again once I'm finished with Victory.
  • G Reconguista - Also garbage from what I've seen (only the first 10 episodes). I like the Elf Bullok and the other weird flat MS (reminds me of Turn-A's Flat). Because of my experience with ZZ, I'll probably give this another chance.
  • Turn-A - One of my favorite non-UC Gundam series. Fantastic setting, and one of the best Gundam models out of the entire franchise.
  • Seed/Destiny - It seems like it gets a lot of hate here, but I really like it. The Blaze Zaku is such a badass re-imagining of the Zaku.
  • Age - Love the Genoace, hate the story, characters, almost everything else.
  • 00 - Remember liking this quite a bit, despite thinking the Gundams were mostly dumb. Thought the movie was terrible. Aliens? Really?
  • Build Fighters - Haven't watched Try yet, but really enjoyed the first season. It's crazy that it's basically a commercial for Gunpla, but since I'm into that, it's kind of great! I also enjoy the call backs to normal Gundam series, like Ral-sanm and the whole festival scene at the ned of the first season. Don't care too much for the main cast, though!

What am I missing from that?

What is it?

Also, what is this, an illustration or a full on model? If the latter, is it incredibly high-gloss, or did the modeler hand-paint a highlight/gloss effect on?
It looks like it's painted intentionally to look like an illustration. There are other models I've seen online with the same style, and I love it. It seems like if the background is good, the model looks like a hand-drawn sketch in any pose.

Looks like the person painted the high gloss on. That's amazing. It looks just like the show.

Awesome work!

Thanks, bro! I got it up with canon Nu Ver ka right now and I am trying to figure out which one is better...

I'd say Hi-Nu is better from afar and Nu is better up close. Hi-Nu is more striking and Nu has more subtle aesthetic appeal that becomes apparent when you get up close. Better proportions vs. better detail, I guess.

So, do genteikits ever fail on delivering preorders?I only managed to preorder MG Altron a couple of days ago and while they didn't say out of stock I'm afraid it might be one of those places they accepts preorders regardless of how many units they can secure.

Exia has to be my favorite Gundam since its overall design is rather simple compared to the more popular ones like Wing or Freedom Strike that have generally busy designs.

I like the design on paper and its focus on CQC, but actually putting together the HG kit a few months back made me do a 180 on the suit.

Just found out one of my supervisors is a huge Mecha fan. Shooting the shit about uc gundam right now

Ask them what they think of Nina/Quess and decide right then if you want to continue working there.

Have tried the RG or MG? I'm having a good time on the MG and I recently ordered the the Repaired RG because MG is just that fun to work on.

Just the 144 HG.

I love the the seven sabers/swords and the placement of each, the fact its only got the pistol and Vulcan for anything midrange. But building it I realized I just didn't like the overall form as much as I thought.

Thinking about it now I love the approach they took in the design of the 4 original suits, with each excelling in a particular area, but I'm not much a fan of any of them.

I finally went to Chinatown in LA the first time in 5 years, I can't believe there's a gunpla store. I normally only buy gunpla online, but holy shit, the gunpla they had on display are amazing. You may not be able to tell from those picture, but every single one of those gunplas are fully painted with pre-shading.

I was so impress I bought Sazabi from them for a hundred bucks after tax without checking the online price.

I checked later, the price is pretty fair for a b&m store, if only it is not in Chinatown.

-------------
On another news I finished building my first 100% resin kit, no scale Dunbine, from another Tomino robot show in the 80s.

It is recast from gk8u8o, you can choose between the body with cockpit open or closed. There are no moving part, so it is more of a figure than a gunpla.

I originally thought this would be piece of cake since it had no moving part, and only come in ~60 pieces. Well, it took me 15 hours to cut the tabs, sanding every parts, drilling pin holes, cleaning mold release, and putty.

15 hours isn't too bad, but because the danger of resin dust, and the equipment you working with (drill, heavy duty cleaner, rod cutter, etc), you have the wear eye protector and mask all the time.

Regarding the kit, the quality of the cast is amazing, every piece fit perfectly, which is a miracle if you ever worked on a resin kit before. There are barely any imperfection, except the large part (the thruster), which can be fix after a few minutes of sanding. All the detail came out perfectly. I am still trying to figure out what color to paint this kit, may be some day I will finish it. The backlog isn't help, building those kit is a lot more fun than painting them ~_~.

If anyone ever felt like doing resin kit, or resin skin for gunpla, I highly recommend gk8u8o. They don't have a large selection, but I got 6 kits from them, they all share the same quality cast.

Ah, now I see.

For kicks, I decided to finally send off 3 funnels with Nu Ver Ka MG. I now see that this kit was designed with this in mind. Gone are posing issues, funnel collapse, and shield interference. It truly is the perfect MG. Also, helps that Nu is my favorite gundam by design anyway.

Meanwhile, you really can't do too many action poses with the MG Hi-Nu Ver Ka if you want to keep the shield. I had heard about this before hand, but I dunno. I COULD ditch the shield, but I love it too much. It attaches on the outside of the arm instead of the front-forearm, so it is a bit inhibiting to movement. Eh, I'll find a good pose for it eventually.

I'll mess with lacquer paints but I can't do resin or garage kits unless they are plastic. I'd rather deal with and ventilate lacquer paint fumes than deal with resin dust.

I also feel like I'd mess up and break things more doing resin than dealing with lacquer and lacquer thinner.

Both are pretty bad health hazards so pick your poison.
