The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

GundamGAF, I've got a question for you.

I'm on episode 6 of Turn A Gundam, and I have to ask, why exactly did Sunrise forbid Tomino from making Loran a girl?

Like, the signs that he clearly wanted him to be female are everywhere! People call him Laura, he's got the feminine design, and from what I've heard he apparently dresses up in drag at some point!

It makes no sense as to why they wouldn't just make him a girl. What was the problem?

Actually if you look at concept art, Loran was male from very early in production (if not from the absolute start).

Loran looking feminine is likely mainly for the cross-dressing joke as well as emphasizing his innocence. The whole calling him 'Laura' thing is likely Tomino being Tomino.

Oh. Really? I always heard that Tomino wanted Loran to be female but Sunrise didn't allow him for some reason.

Likely just speculation based on the design and initial confusion with his name. I've never heard any direct evidence to support the claim and most evidence, like his early design sketches, seem to point away from that.

Did you get your Akatsuki yet?

It's supposedly left Hong Kong on the 27th, but I haven't gotten any tracking update since. Seems the HK post suspended tracking for surface post on October 1st, so maybe that's why. I'm expecting it to come any time now.

So I had an idea after that picture I took earlier. I truly have too much time on my hands.

Rather than post every picture, I'll just link the album:

Not all of them are models, I had to substitute a few of my old action figures.

Woot Zeta Gundam on Blu Ray will get bought. Hopefully 0079 sells well for Anime Limited so they can bring it the UK.

Will be buying the fuck out of ZZ and Build Fighters! Also what is the Turn A slide about?

Lots of Gundam fans talk about Turn A speculation as if it was fact.

I to will be getting ZZ.

And they do, I can get it though. I'd love for a Gundam with a female lead so I can see why they want to believe it so bad.

Yeah, I totally understand that too. I'm more speaking on people speculating on Tomino's intentions with the series as if it was an absolute fact. Multiple things about it, not just Loran's gender.

What? What is wrong with wings theyre like the most important part of a mobile suit. Without wings a gundams design is bland and under designed.

The look over designed and stupid with wings. The only ms with wings I like are the zeta gundam, and they aren't they big. Shit like the wing zero or that gabage in seed are disgusting.

Usually extraneous additions that serve no purpose other than making it look better. Overdesign, basically. I don't usually mind when they serve a purpose, like how F91's "wings" are actually cannons and radiation fins, or how the V2 "creates" beam wings using its thrust.

I'll be interested to see if the growth from The Origin is sustainable. The Origin is really something special. No other Gundam media can really live up to it. I'm not sure what you release next to transition out of it, especially on the Manga side. Maybe Crossbones? A translation of the Beltorchika's Children LN? You certainly wouldn't want to try and translate the mess that is the Unicorn LNs or something like Char's Deleted Affair. Glory of the Losers would be a good bet, but that's still ongoing.

Gundam Cross War coming out internationally!? -Throws his giant robot themed Vanguard cards at the wall- found my new money hole.

Though ironically still need to import the english cards -sigh- always something. Oh well still get to collect cards, the secret bane of my wallet. But instead of the bootleg Gundam/Macross themed stuff they are official.

Which suits do you think look better as an SD than they do as a real robo?

Like do some suits you dislike look better in SD form or do you just hate it as much if not more so?

This applies to robots in general that have an SD form.

Not sure but imo Banshee SD is hot damn the cutest freaking thing ever. It's mostly the claw weapon, its supposed to be intimidating but its just adorable when its all mini and deformed.

The SD Zaku II is just cutest thing. The original Zaku II is great, but man that SD is great.

Super hyped for an official ZZ release. Time to launch my bizarre flea market Malaysian DVDs into the sun.

I already have the old Bandai Z release on DVD. Never seen X but that will me mine as well. Super hyped!

Has anyone watched the Gundam Wing Operation Meteor OVAs? Are they a decent substitute for watching the entire series?

What about the 00 compilation movies?

Not sure I want to trudge through 50 episodes for each series again.

Read Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Glory of the Losers. Easily the best way to experience the series.

Don't go back to 00. As much as I enjoy Season 1, it's just not worth slogging through season 2 and the film. There are better ways to use your time.

Finished Victory Gundam. I guess I fall into the camp of people who thought it was really good, and probably one of my favorites at this point (or maybe that's just the post-ending high?). I mean, there was a lot of weird shit in it, like the tire obsession, the giant phallus cannon, and the Angel Halo, but weird isn't bad and those just added to how entertaining it was. And beam rotors are probably the best thing ever and I was disappointed how they were phased out later in the series. Quite liked Uso as well, he's up there for me in terms of Gundam MCs.

I'll also say it was interesting watching the first episodes of Iron-Blooded Orphans alongside this, given the use of child soldiers, albeit from different circumstances.

Guess that finished off UC for me, although I might check out Evolve or G-Savior eventually. Not sure if I want to move onto Wing or X now. I watched and liked the dubbed Wing back when it was on Toonami and didn't quite care to grasp the plot back then, but not sure if I would like it as much now.

Welcome to the small and misunderstood club of those that liked Victory Gundam. What'd you think of the ending and Katejina?

The entire final battle was amazing. I'm always a sucker for the "old generation sacrifices themselves for the sake of the new generation" trope, and the Reinforce and Jeanne D'Arc did exactly that. The standard Newtype ghost sequence was also good, and I'm glad that Uso got
his somewhat happy ending with Shakti and almost all his friends able to survive (RIP Odelo)
.

As for Katejina, I always thought something was wrong with her when she was glad Woowig got massacred in the first episode, but I never really expected her to be as insane as she ended up. On one hand, was a bit disappointed she
managed to survive, but then considering she's blind, poor, alone, and possibly amnesiac by the end of it, it actually might be a worse fate than just death.

I'm actually only thinking of watching these for my wife, so reading them individually isn't in the cards. I remember enjoying 00 enough to the end, but thought the movie was terrible.

Instead, we're watching Turn A. I haven't watched it since the early 2000s when I got some HK DVDs off eBay. We started it today and blew through 7 episodes. It's amazing how much we can sit through when it's actually good (/me gives the side-eye to Victory).

Evolve isn't much of an investment. I'd recommend watching other series, though, since it'll make shorts with familiar MS and characters more enjoyable. If you haven't watched Igloo, I'd go for that. It's a pretty good short series that takes place at various times surrounding the 1-year war.

That's like verbatim from the wiki.

And oh man that reminds me of an episode that really got me heated.
When the biker guy and his teammate die and there's the whole scene of their afterlife. These characters were bad, like dumb characters and bad guys. Am I supposed to be happy that they died and had a nice afterlife?
Too much b.s. like that turned me off of Victory.

I think the first ep is technically the third ep, but that doesn't help her the fact that she was happy a village got murdered. As crazy as she was she did have a legit turning point though.
Chronicle saving her from that rape and the fact that they never did perfect the whole cyber newtype thing 100 or so years later did not help.
I think there used to be a good woman there but it got insanely distorted through the story. When she was good had to have been preshow though cause man her way of thinking was weird. I really have to find the time to watch that show again to see her transformation.

I got the RightStuf 0079 TV box set No.1. It is a very bare-bones set and the subtitles are a very old-fashioned large yellow font but that is part of the charm I guess. Will probably pick up the second set and probably Z, ZZ sets once they come out.

And they have to do Victory. Victory is awesome.

My only problem with Victory was the BESPA suits kind of suck. I never warmed up. Which is a shame because F91 suits rock.

Otherwise, Victory is solid.

I think until you get further into the series they're just bug eyed wheeled abominations. Granted some of the later ones just seem over complicated too, the suits just don't have a stylistic flow to them. Everybody in Victory was insane, even the suit designers.

I quite liked a lot of the earlier, simpler BESPA suits. The Zolo, Shokew, Tomliat, and the Zoloat were great, before they started going overboard on the bug and tire designs. Not to mention three of these had beam rotors.

30 episodes into Turn A Gundam. This show is amazing. I love the weird mech design. All of the characters are top notch. The only character that doesn't fit is Corrin, but he isn't that important.

The Kihel/Dianna switcheroo has been far better than I expected it to be. I thought it was going to be a one-off gag, but it has turned into maybe the most interesting part of the show and really adds depth to the two characters. It is a little far-fetched that the two couldn't find time to switch back during the night when they were staying at the Heim residence. I'm also surprised at how well Kihel reacted to being forced into Dianna's position for weeks maybe even months. Dianna had several opportunities to get back to the Soriel and switch, but never took them instead leaving Kihel alone in a hostile environment while Dianna was in relative safety. I thought Loran would have been pushing harder to get Kihel back after he found out.

Loran knew which one he preferred.

So I just started watching Build Fighters Try. First episode wasn't bad, but I would've preferred it if Fumina and Sekai didn't just inherit the Build Burning Gundam from Iori and Reji's trophy. Ramba Ral has lost a lot of weight in 7 years.

Strike Gundam has one of the best mobile suit themes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImOrl-Jqofw

I love how the SEED soundtrack had just a touch of that late 70's style as a homage to MSG. I guess it was a bit of a modern reboot of the original series thematically. I think the moral ambiguity is done better in SEED, as I feel Zeon is clearly a dangerous entity that should not be allowed to exist under any circumstances. I think in SEED, Earth Gov is clearly the worser of two evils.

Turn A is pitch perfect. Really, an amazing show. Franchise could have ended right there.
