Yeah it's really that misunderstood show. Every time I read EvilKatarn and Corvo's opinions of it it makes me think I'm crazy for liking it. I mean it really can't be worse than G Reco. I even like ZZ, though that took a second viewing and Turn A is pretty much an anti Gundam show as far as I'm concerned cause it does not feel like a typical Gundam show (Don't worry Turn A fans I like that too). I even like G Gundam. I guess I like every Gundam show in some way granted I haven't seen AGE and G Reco yet, need to finish GBF Try. I like Build Fighters (Aila is best GIRL, and by GIRL I mean not full fledged woman cause that honor goes to Rinko, whom will probably at some point in life ask for breast reduction surgery so she doesn't injure her back severely).
Why do I like the least liked Gundam shows? I like Wing, Zeta and Victory the most from the Full shows. I like 0079, but it's not my favorite, I really have to be in the right mood for that show. I like Seed and Destiny is like a guilty pleasure to me. I like half of 00, haven't seen season 2 since I bough DVD's years ago. Makes me feel like the insane member of the community.
Seed is also a guilty pleasure of mine. I recognize all of its many faults, but nostalgia is holding unlike when I rewatched Wing. Hell, I'm in the middle of watching Destiny for the first time and I'm enjoying it more than I probably should. I absolutely hate Shin and a lot of the plot so far, but I couldn't help but get excited when Kira got back into the Freedom and wrecked some fools.

I understand the thrust of your post is that Athrun makes allot of dumb decisions in the final act of the series (presumably. It's usually what people are referring to), but I want to bring up something else which I don't see people talk about as much - Not directly any way or in details and in part I just have an urge to rail against this show again that I want to get out.
The idea that Athrun would be part of or the leader of this badass group of ZAFT pilots was nothing but a cruel marketing gimmick. Or something which the production team didn't or couldn't deliver on (knowing this show, probably the latter).
SEED Destiny has some pretty cool fight scenes in the first few episodes. The first one with the Blast Impulse in the asteroid field is the coolest one imo - It has multiple combatants doing different things across the battlefield that are each important to the final outcome in their own way, people aren't being stupid, and it has some neat, unique visual effects on its own (I like the one where Shinn crashes through the glass in debris and turns his cannons on the druggie trio).
Then we get to Earth and everything turns to crap. I should have picked up on it when the Zakus just jump onto the Minerva deck during the first battle, clearly to give them something to do, since Lunamaria hits even less and Rey's about as useful as the Minerva's own defenses. But hey, maybe they have no way to fly (despite being backpack-based units).
I really should have got it when Athrun arrives later and in his first sortie the first thing he does is transform to MA mode and fly off to "fend off" Sting, who is giving him allot of trouble despite his previous success against enhanced pilots and these guys in particular with a weaker machine
Shinn's left to fight an entire squad of Windams by himself but apparently it's not an issue. They're not giving him any trouble or trying anything smart. They're just floating there, awkwardly pointing their rifles in his general direction and waiting to be shot or cut down.
How did Athrun know they'd be so incompetent? It's not like they're fighting a highly maneuverable mobile suit with a ton of heavy artillery like the Freedom. The Windams have the same basic loadout as the MS they're fighting and have an overwhelming numerical advantage, a point which is consistently a source of tension in the original series. How do they suck so bad? Heck, man, the shot of Shinn flying up into a scattering group of MS with the Impulse just to pick them apart becomes like a thing.
Athrun ends up helping a little after the Gaia arrives, and it's the only exciting moment in the battle since every other element of it is clearly divided into inviolably inseparable parts for no good reason despite taking place in such a small area.
Every time I bring up this show I want to tear it apart. SEED Destiny might be my most anticipated sequel to anything, it starts off so well, and it crashes so hard and fast. I want to talk more about all of that since my post feels pretty incomplete right now but I've gotta get going right now.

My biggest problem is that Athrun forgot everything he learned in SEED. It pretty much takes Kira popping back up and Shinn "killing" him to snap out of it. Granted I don't think Athrun was going to follow Durandal's lead cause Athrun isn't as fucked up as Rey and Shinn were cause let's face it. Durandal knows how to pluck at the heart strings of fucked up boys. That's why I consider him to be the boy scout leader equivalent of Paptimus.
Most of the show was pretty much just waiting for Athrun to realize that he was making the same mistakes that he was making in SEED. I think once Athrun got passed the thrill of being "useful" again he should've realized that Durandal wasn't all he said he was. Granted I will admit that got admitted too late, but it was obvious the Logos group were just scapegoats.

Zeta is one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) show in the UC timeline. It's huge both among hardcore western fans and in Japan and widely regarded as one of the best series in the franchise.
A few people in this thread have unorthodox opinions about it. That's totally fine, but it isn't representative of the overall sentiment from everything I've seen.

Oh thank you for that much needed reality check on that one. I think sometimes on here one can lose perspective on certain things. Especially when it comes to Gundam shows. Just reassure me that I'm not the only person that likes Zeta's various transformable animal themed mecha and I'll be fine.
CCA is only acceptable if you don't stop and ask the question of why Zeta Char and CCA Char are two very different people. Unicorn was actually good for the most part minus the funky time travel scene, and Riddhe.
Yes. It's like how Strike Freedom is terrible from a design standpoint, but is arguably the most popular Mobile Suit and is always in the top 3 outside of Zaku II, Nu and Unicorn.

Sorry it took me a couple extra days to post thoughts on the most recent SEED episodes. New semester started and whatnot.
I liked them more than the last pair, for sure, and I think my friend did too. (Which isn't to say he likes the show, but a good laugh and a couple of moments of "huh" go a long way with him.)
There were some good fights and I still really like Flay. I'm guessing y'all are right and that'll change drastically over time. I was grateful that Lacus didn't sing, the poor thing. #TeamFlay. Haro was funny in a scene, too, which is a miracle.
This show delves a bit too deeply into the whole "girls undressed xfd" thing for me. It really cheapens productions.
Flay is cute though not gonna lie
I effing love this OP, btw. Gonna be sad when it leaves. I'm jamming to it right now and used it while on a run this morning.

I'm still the crazy one for thinking all of 00 is far superior to anything else Gundam-wise that I have seen. I don't think you can top that level of wtf.

Just keep watching. I think you and your friend will get a kick out of it. Has Kira fought Athrun and the rest of his team yet? That shouldn't be too much of a spoiler.

Yeah, he fought 'em all off once circa the fifth episode or so. It was fun. Blond fellow got mad crazy angst-ridden afterward. Green kid was like "eh whatevs."
I'm also watching Gundam shows religiously again to give me battle ideas for the mecha books I'm writing so every time big flashy fights occur I need to pay extra doses of attention since I suck at that sort of thing

Aw, thanks! I'll be sure to keep going with them, then. Between your praise for my silly little impressions and JadedWriter's Flay warnings, I'm having a good time in this thread. XD
I don't think the plot of CCA is that necessarily well received. The majority of fans I've spoken to like it purely for the mech design and animation. It's very commercially successful because of those aspects, but I don't think it's necessarily a critical hit.
I should get my MG V2 this week. I'm so damn pumped. I don't care if the transformation is a bit finicky (they always are), that design is a damn god.
The MG RX-78 2.0 still captures the original animated look very well. I really appreciate it for that. For me, it's amazing how quickly the 3.0 has become the odd man out. If I wanted an updated RX-78, I'm going for The Origin. If I want the original, that's what the 2.0 is for.

That's exactly what I'm saying tho. No matter how good or bad it was as a movie, it's still critically popular in a number of Gundam ACE another publisher polls by a number of fans. It's still a critical hit when you consider the popularity regardless of the quality of the content.

Haha when ever you start building yours is when I will build mine. Also HORY SHIT! this kit has 111 water decal stickers plus hg amount of regular stickers.I am going to take my sweet time on this baby since I want it to be perfect and displayed in my room. I think a matte or semi gloss would look good on this kit.
The origin rx-78 looks like it fixes everything I dislike about the 2.0 while still staying true to the anime colors. Plus it seems to have way better connectors and grips for all the weapons. Will buy later this year.
EDIT: Just used matte top spray for the first time and I am in shock how amazing it looks.

I would definite critical popularity as people generally liking the plot of the thing. In the west at least, which is of course a niche fandom, CCA's plot is derided. It's popularity is undeniable, however. No matter how good or bad it is, you can't really fault it for the animation and suit design. Class A work.
Yes. It's like how Strike Freedom is terrible from a design standpoint, but is arguably the most popular Mobile Suit and is always in the top 3 outside of Zaku II, Nu and Unicorn.
Well one has to understand my biggest issue with SEED designs are back packs.
I will be honest, they are neither sexy nor really functional for their size. They are just big and ugly and while Justice is better then say Aile Strike its still not good.
Also it is a total failure of a Red Suit, as it has to stand up against stuff like Zaku, Sazabi, Sinanju, Epyon, and Virsago and it just doesnt stack up.
IJ while okay at times just comes across as over designed with shit like the calf beams so often falls in the Strike Freedom and Freedom Zone.
Aside from Wing EW (which as very thin wings) I like suits with smaller back packs or those that serve a purpose.
Sinanju and Stien
Wing Zero
Nu
Unicorn and Banshee
Blue Frame (hate when tactical arms are in back pack mode)
G Bouncer
Age 3 Normal
Virgo
All of them have little to no back pack or it has a huge vareity of functionality or can disconnect and be used in tons of ways.

yeah they are backpack heavy, was forced to buy gundam 2 stands. i thought the inf justice kneecaps were funny looking. i got a mg kit as a gift for a family friend and noticed them. i had to look back at the anime bc i never noticed before with all the stuff flying around.
everyone's digging hi nu ka,
got a couple of friends that built the Mg one really nice
i guess i liked suits that make the character creative to fight.
i thought x105 kira was good bc he had to think to beat opponents. not sure if it's my favorite suit...
once he got freedom, there's not much animation except him spamming those rainbow colors and then everything on screen explodes. kira sorta got boring.
I'm still the crazy one for thinking all of 00 is far superior to anything else Gundam-wise that I have seen. I don't think you can top that level of wtf.
I like almost every single suit, Gundam or not, in SEED and SEED Destiny.
Also let's be fair to Athrun in SEED DESTINY, if only a little bit. Durandal's game in the beginning is pretty much perfect. He comes off as a down to earth man who just...wants to change the world for the better and he's got a certain way with his words. It isn't until the whole fake Lacus thing comes up that he even starts to notice anything wrong with him and it isn't until the death squad comes after the real Lacus that he realizes he made a mistake.
Hell the rest of ZAFT and most of the remaining Earth governments are behind him until he reveals he is a loony toon in ACT III with his crazy DESTINY plan.

On episode 5 of The 08th and I love everything about.
On episode 4 of Gundam Reconguista in G, the series is growing on me and I love the crazy suits, fun characters, and amazing animation. Story is not that good but the characters is what powers this show
Top coat finished on MG ZAKU, top coating is super easy but I should of waited before the panel lining dried some before I started coating. also even though I was using low orde spray it is still a powerful spray and will use it outside for now on. Moving on to the Gouf 2.0 then V2

I like all of Unicorn's designs from the Geara Zulu grunts to Kshatriya and Unicorn. I usually like most UC suits including Advance of Zeta and Ex-S Gundam and Penelope. UC generally has the best suit designs. I even like post Unicorn grunt suits from F91 and Crossbone. But the suits just get smaller and the designs aren't as catching post latter half of Crossbone into Victory.
Generally most of the better suit designs have come from UC.
I like most of G Reco design to from G-Self/Arcane to Kabakali and G Lucifer and Gaeon and Mack Knife and Jahnnam, it has so much variety and it all looks great in motion. Turn A also grew on me.
I only really liked a few suits in 00. I like most of Tieria's suits and I liked Harute since Harute was like an Evangelion in Gundam form. And I liked Zabanya. 00 never grew on me and I only thought Avalanche Exia and QanT was okay, I just thought Astraea Type F was much better. Tieria's suits and some of Allelujah/Marie like the Virtue/Nadleeh, Seravee, and the Raphael are cool with their Angel motif. The Harute/Marute fits that theme too. I could not bring myself to like Thrones or any of the flag suits. Reborn and 1 are okay...
Really Tieria was the best thing about 00.
The first half of AGE had pretty great Gundam and Grunt with Flit and Asemu. The latter half suit designs sucked and I mean the only one that was sort of okay is Legilis but that's because Legilis is broken as fuck in Maxi Boost On.
SEED/Astray is generally okay. I like a lot of suits, I just think the Aile pack is terrible. Ootori/Oowashi/Shiranui/Destiny packs are better. It gave us stuff like Astray Outframe and Testament and Dreadnaught which are kinda cool I guess. It gave us some crazy stuff like Astray Red Dragon and Turn Red.
Pretty indifferent to X suits. They're cool I guess like X Divider.
I'm just not a really big fan of Wing and G Gundam suits outside a couple of them at all.
For G Gundam I only really like Nobel Gundam and maybe Master Gundam because Allenby and Master Asia were the best characters from the series, everything else was mostly dumb though God has some cool attacks.
For Wing I only like Tallgeese, and Wing Gundam gave us the superior retakes like Fenice line and the Honoo custom line. Most of Wing gundam designs are really look like G Gundam knockoffs. Really. Heavy arms, Deathscythe, Altron, all those look like G Gundam rejects or leftover designs.
Katoki made some of them better but they still have their problems like with their colors used.

While Wing could have easily been God Gundam everthing else is really very different from G....this is really weird you bring it up but ignore X which litteraly are Wing retakes and they dont even try to hide it.

I really just don't care about Gundam X because I didn't finish watching it. I only see it through playing Gundam EXVS and from playing the game that is only thing I know about X.
It's just that whole section in the 1990s is where the designs really fell flat to me.
Other than Tallgeese, I can see most Wing suits and see how silly their design is and see how they can probably work in G Gundam as some kind of upgrade or stereotype. That entire period of time was just Gundam designs gone bad and Evangelion and other super robot shows just being a lot better.
Throw Altron as Dragon Gundam's older brother.
Throw Sandrock as some desert gundam
Throw Heavyarms as some violent American Gundam upgrade from the boxing one.
Throw Deathscythe somewhere in there too.
Also I need to talk about how stupid Gundam EX A is. Holy shit this multiple universe dimension shit with Sthesia Awar and the Extreme Gundam is so hilariously stupid...

Having specialized suits for Ranged Combat, Desert Combat, and Stealth Combat is something that makes sense.
Altron I will give though.
That said you have my sword on Gundam Exa.
What would be the coolest gundam ever? I know, we will use Strike's combine Gimick with a base Gundam that is like 78-2, but then with a quick change it can be God Gubdam, Wing Gundam Zero, and Strike Freedom with a pilot who is New Type and has access to Trans Am.......
I mean I guess. I just don't have the same nostalgia that I assume most of the people here have for Wing and probably G since not from America and only go to college there now.
When I was a kid outside of stuff like anpanman and doraemon, I have uncles and grandparents that showed me stuff like Gatchaman, Yatterman, Tekkaman, and then later original Gundam and Zeta. Those were the first exposure I had to the series and I only really got into it in the 2000s when SEED started running and I asked to stay up late outside of my age bracket to watch Evangelion and SEED. That's when I really got into robots and the concept of heroes. I get that Wing has some specialized suits, they're just not designed the best or how I best envisioned those would look like.
It's not even the suit design of EX A that bothers me, it's the general plot and story that makes it so weird. Especially with how it ties in with the game...

Its not even a nostalgia thing for me or at least no more then with you.
I grew up with stuff like Mazinger Z, Grendizer, Getter G and the like.
The very first gundam I came in contact with was 78-2 and Kampher in wal mart I believe.
G fares even worse with me then it does you probably because I watched and love what I consider be quality SR stuff like Grendizer and the best design in the show, it has no right taking credit for given its a robot Sailor Venus.
