What's everyone's opinion on Gundam X?
IBO got me interested in watching some more Gundam (a couple years back I watched the original, Zeta, Wing, Turn A, and most of ZZ, need to finish that one) and so I wanna finish up a couple more series, wanted to start with X first since it's pretty short. On the other hand I never see anyone talk about this show, and even the games seem to barely focus on it---like I got DW Reborn yesterday, and all they still have is Gundam XX as the only MS from that series.
One of my favorites. X is atypical for a Gundam show - Mecha design is overall its weakest element. Most of the designs look like rejects from other shows of the period, and I found myself really liking only a few of them: All of the lead's suits, particularly the original Gundam X (I wish I'd written down exactly why, but I like the white color scheme that fits with the moon motif and the design choices that makes it look like something that could be mass-produced but still strong and unique, like the assymetrical build and having a rifle/shield combo piece of equipment rather than two separate pieces of gear), and the Bertigo, this show's Quebley-type MS that has a super-cool boss pigeon theme going. Most people really like the X Divider (I agree it's cool) and the Virsago (for some reason).
The thing about X I see most people cite about liking it is its cast. I personally had been going on a Gundam spree when I watched it, and this is the only one from the era that really got me invested in its characters. The only ones from the main cast that I don't like are the Frost Brothers, who seem like obvious fujoshi bait and never really rise above it. Everyone else is great, and there are lots of characters moments that make them feel like real people. I was pretty used to crazy and/or unrelatable after binging on UC Gundam, and this was a nice repreive. The storytelling is pretty '90s, so YMMV. I also remember some early episodes kinda messing around not making much advancement, but I could let it fly.
The other thing I see people cite is that they like the fights. Spoiler, I suppose, but the main character is not a newtype. 'Newtypes' play a big role in the story, but thankfully newtype shenanigans aren't a driving force in combat for our heroes.
I also really like the music, which is something I almost never see anyone talk about. It's a softer, orchestral score compared to the more intense soundtracks of the shows that had preceeded it like Wing. Several pieces are beautifully composed, and I was surprised to learn that Yasuo Higuchi, the man behind it, has done almost nothing before and since then. It's a shame.
