The Last Guardian early copy impressions thread

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Dont know if have been posted yet, but in a list of the best games of 2016 a journo from The Guardian has called TLG the ''standout game of 2016''

https://www.theguardian.com/technol...r-watch-dogs-2-dishonored-2-the-last-guardian

This is some glowing praise especially compared to the games he has listed like the Witness which is also an all time great in my opinion and The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine which maybe not quite as good as Hearts of Stone on a story and character level was a great experience, looked incredible and was better executed than the main game. Damn I'm trying to keep my hype in check!

I just looked and they're nowhere near as spoiler-filled as I expected. Very little in there besides the game completion trophy's name being suggestive.

(Your personal mileage and spoiler-phobia may vary obviously)
Basically, if people don't want to read it, the trophies are very much in line with previous games.

Beat the game, beat the game faster, beat the game "perfectly' etc...

And I already knew it was going to be good, but the last review from The Guardian just sealed the collector's edition for me. Even with the prime discount, this is a big much for a new game, but since I'm not buying anything else until Horizon, I'm going all in. I need that steel book and statue.

So with these early impressions being glowing are any of us predicting a different metascore than previously thought?

Nope, these are from people that generally don't have a problem with tech issues, there will still be some reviewers who do. Or likely gamers that appreciate strong narrative and minimalistic storytelling. It's still not for everyone, but meh, reviewers are opinions so you can never put a beat on so many different personalities in the critics world. Inside was beloved after all and so was Witness.

I think the 70's meta was lowballing, I still think it would avenge a high 80's range. So my prediction for meta would be 87.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Is this game full of feels? Moreso than Shadow of the Colossus?

Nah, I still think it will be low 80's. I personally have faith in the game, but my gut tells me critics will be bit harsh on it, because of tech issues.

@Ultro's Yeah, since you just feel sadness and loss throughout SotC, this one seems a lot more personal since it's just you and a beast. Many have said its very powerful if you are a pet owner.

Check the page 1 though, keeps getting updated with impressions.

i will wait for the DF video and if the tech issues are bad, i'll wait for the remaster.

i've waited close to ten years for this, what's another 3-5.

Comments like this are always so bizarre to me. Not so much the tech issues bothering people but the second part.

Collector's shipping tomorrow.
Everyone who has played the game seems to be happy about it, that's a very positive signal =)

I mean SoTC had tech and camera issues. Didn't stop the powerful design of the game from shining through to a ~87 MC

as bonus – http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/fumito-uedas-slow-route-to-perfection (also article by Simon Parkin, but for The New Yorker)

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of the exquisite Souls series, once told me that playing Ueda’s début game encouraged him to quit his job at the American tech firm Oracle and join FromSoftware, the Japanese video-game company of which he is now the president.

I had been waiting for this game ten years. Got it yesterday, five hours in.

Coming from a long-standing Ueda fan, I honestly couldn't be happier. Toriko has such lifelike behaviour it's unbelievable.

That was a totally different time. People, including reviewers, are much more sensitive to this stuff now - in some cases it's a good thing but i think more often than not now it's either causing people to overlook a great game or resulting in developers expending more of their time on performance than on innovating.

I think if SOTC released to this climate it would be received very differently.

Having said all this, it means I am probably going to fucking love this game :)

heh

hope you get spoiled the end in two years by a random post here in neogaf

i don't care about spoilers so that's not an issue

That you are relying on some fabled remaster that may never come and could potential run worse if not handled well.

SoTC is my second fav. game of all time, i'm willing to wait for a nice running remaster if it doesn't perform well. I mean we just got a PS Pro that improves performance of older titles, very possible we get another patch for this for the next PS upgrade. i haven't heard anything about performance so chances are good it will run good enough. In the end it's not like the original game would disappear.

I am beyond excited for this game. A bit sad that I won't get to play it until break though.

I think I'm going to try and get my girlfriend to watch with me as I play. This seems exactly like the type of game that she'd be interested in.

I actually disagree. I think that SotC would be just as well received today. Certain games, movies, books are timeless experiences, and Ueda's work fits in that camp. Full priced games are more homogenized than ever, so something like an ICO would stand out more.

As for TLG, it sounds like only inveterate pet haters won't like it. What it's doing is so unique and powerful (a buddy tells me it's so overwhelming emotionally that he has to take breaks) that to dock it for technical issues seems petty - critics will, of course!

Gaf early impressions are almost always a bit higher than the later GAF consensus in my experience.

Most notorious example was Order 1886 thread. People on there insisting it was 8-10 hours long LOL.

If it took them that long to play it, who are you to say otherwise? This game alone, the length has ranged from 8.5 to ~15 hours, with the majority around 10-12

Simon Parkin of the f'ing Guardian named it GOTY, though.

You could just as easily apply the opposite. Like Ratchet and Clank being a 5 hour game.

Just take the impressions for what they are.

Yep. It makes sense, though, as people who get the game early are generally more excited for/interested in the game. Of course, I don't mean to imply that this means that TLG is bad; just that early impressions might not necessarily be in line with the general opinion later on.

I did not particularly rush through that game, though I admit I also didn't find the collectibles at all interesting so I didn't bother much with that. Was done in just over 5 hours. So say 6, 7, or hell even 8 hours. But 10 hours to beat? Come on. I just don't see it with that game.

But not really the main point, which is that IMO, these early impressions lean more towards the positive a lot of the time on Gaf. Hey, I hope I am wrong and these excellent early impressions are right on point!

Just gonna keep saying it...The Guardian's 2016 Game of the Year is The Last Guardian.

This goes way beyond early positive impressions like The Order got.

I really can't believe this is coming out this week never mind that people actually have finished it already. Damn I'm not even finished FFXV yet. What a time to be alive.

I'm pretty sure that's around how long it took me to finish the Order for example but then I'm much more of a leisurely type of player. If you are trying to gauge the length of a game from someone's impressions then surely its common sense to take into account that there's a likely chance they don't play games 1:1 the same way as you. Likewise should be said when talking about positive impressions in general then whining when the game doesn't live up to what a random person on the internet said.

Wonder how many will bash it from the angle that it's been on and off development for 7+ years...
I'm from the perspective that pretty much anything should be judged on its own merits, particularly in entertainment, but I doubt every review will be like that tbh.

What was the Guardian Goty 2015?
Bloodborne afaik
