The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

@the dude mulling around in the demo files: anything suggesting that the cutscene at the beginning of the demo was pre-rendered? I know there's often a big fidelity gap between real-time cutscenes and gameplay, but I've never seen a gap THIS big. It doesn't really matter in a practical sense (the main issue with pre-rendered cutscenes is that they hurt ""immersion"" when the cutscenes look like they take place in a whole different world than the gameplay (see: Final Fantasy X) but as long as you keep them in the same ballpark (see: Metal Gear Rising) it doesn't matter) and I know a lot of games have to pre-render a few cutscenes anyways (like the volta river scene in MGS4) but in this case it would almost feel deceitful because of how it was assumed that all the footage we've seen thus-far was being rendered on a PS3 or equivalent.
It is pre-rendered and yes it is jarring sometimes unfortunately.

huge spoilers. literally game ruining spoilers, potentially.

I'm sorry, but
don't the last two shots of the post-demo trailer basically spoil the ending? I'm not even gonna write it down here, but it's what a lot of people were expecting. the last two shots, if you pay attention to them (especially the second to last) they pretty much confirm those suspicions and reveal what is probably the big twist at the end of the game.

edit: just to summarize though if you're the type of person who cares even the slightest bit about spoilers (I'm not, fortunately) do not play the demo and DEFINITELY don't watch the trailer that starts to play when the demo is over.
I can't believe how many people fell for this. The last two shots are from two completely different parts of the game and the dialogue is from another scene entirely. It's only cut in a way to make you go "Holy shit!", but it has nothing to do with the actual storyline. Many games do this nowadays. The Beyond trailer as well etc.

Watching the video posted on the last page, at 2:51 she walks right through his body. Is this done to keep her from getting in your way during combat?

By the way, the sun shining through the trees was really impressive. This game looks like it has has terrific atmosphere.

She definitely pushed me when I was trying to hide during a clicker encounter, so this must only happen during crafting.

With shooting you cant just fire away you have to take your time.

The melee is of course fantastic, upgrading the board or pipe for a one hit kill is awesome.

Played the demo, honestly they could have done a better job. It's too short and most of the time it's just going through the buildings, the ending part is good and gives an idea of what to expect from the game, a great survival experience.
But if I had to judge the game based solely on the demo I wouldn't be too much impressed, also the night setting plus the grain filter don't do the graphics justice.

Seriously I had only 6 bullets in my revolver ... i put two in the chest of one of the Clicks and he still kept coming .. I ran away like a bitch LOL ... tried to fend them off with my fists and my knife but they were too much for me! Awesome game!

So... I decided to play on normal and see if stealth was easier (for whatever reason I just cannot sneak up on runners in hard mode, they always spin around and aggro - and I'm a stealth nut in other games I should be able to do this!!! lol ) anyway I'm playing on normal to see if it's easier... NOPE! I'm spotted, and shit goes sideways as usual. Get into a fight, I'm able to beat down two runners and break away before the clicker in near me, kill the other runner with a brick + melee combo. The clicker is all over me now... so I stun it with a brick and try and get to a melee weapon that's on the ground... clicker grabs me but I had a shiv left. I use the shiv thinking, okay demo over. NOPE! Shiv does not kill clicker, just pisses him off. I have one round left in the revolver *POP* I miss, he eats me.

Damn dude, even normal is a bitch at times. Thought that shiv was gonna kill him, thought wrong.

LOVE how the aiming dot auto targets the head if they're close enough. The detail of the headshots in this are one of the things that are very reminiscent of Manhunt.

And rushing the Clicker with a brick and smashing its face off never gets old.

There are
some bricks/bottles on the ground next to it...

I know, but you're implying that shooting it works and it didn't for me.

I sorta expected better graphics from what I've seen in past Uncharted games. I thought the textures on the outside area were a bit washed out, but the interiores looked great

I can see what you mean but keep in mind that environments are a bit more expansive and there's only so much they can do with that amount of memory. Could also be a trade-off for the rain effect in that area, I'll have to see an outdoor daytime section. Assuming that the final game looks like the demo of course.

I love how cover is natural you don't have to push a button or anything.

Eh shooting it does work I did it.

The demo is amazing. I couldn't believe how intense the fighting was in the end. It's gonna be one of those rare games where your every move counts and that totally suits its setting.

Reading these coments makes me wonder how I survived when they all rushed me at the same time. Must've been really lucky.

Must've been a bug, I'm positive I hit it several times.

So this is not for PS+? Should I go out and buy God of War right now? -_-

I would rent the game if you can. You might be disappointing buying the game after seeing how short the demo actually is. Unless you are also interested in playing GoW:A, which is a great game, than by all means grab it.

A bit too short, but the demo felt amazing. Great visuals, gameplay (controls feel improved from Uncharted games), music and the survival feeling. Really atmospherical and hard as it should be while facing these monsters, because main characters are real people and not Rambo or superheroes.

Awesome work guys, can't wait for the game.

Luckily it’s not always dark.

Don't hurt me, but I have to ask: Are you using crouch? =P

You probably are, but it's definitely possible to clear the whole last section without being spotted. NearRivers posted his own video of how to do it earlier in the thread:

Yea, I have seen the clipping between the two characters occur more often that I'd have liked. It's even more disconcerting when you realize that none of the Uncharted games had this issue.

I had to take a breather after the first time I riled up that mob of runners and their clicker pal. The full game is going to be so intense

I'm hyped after seeing that snowy area in the trailer. Whether that means the seasons change, or you travel a far distance, it hints at a hell of a journey

Yes of course I crouch haha.

It's interesting to watch that... maybe my issue is that I was moving too slow behind them, and didn't get on triangle fast enough. Because they always spin around on me, even if I'm stationary.

Just to put it out there, I've ghosted every Splinter Cell up to them turning into action games, and got perfect ratings on the first two Tenchu games, no kill Metal Gear runs, etc. So this was pretty weird running into trouble on TLoU. I think maybe I was too careful. I need to start recording my stuff. lol

So what's the difference between normal and hard? Less materials lying around?

Yes, that for sure. I don't really know if there are other differences yet.

Yeah, could be. He seems to get in for the kill quickly and at least one of them was beginning to turn around. So maybe they will hear you no matter what, but you have a small window where you can still stealth neutralize them.

Curious to ask someone who has experimented with both difficulties then - obviously it's a short representation, but which difficulty do you think you'll start with in the full game?

I'm eager to jump in with hard mode, but worry about enemies being too 'spongy'.

After watching the trailer a few times and everything else, I get the feeling Joel mightve had a daughter in the past, maybe Ellies age, whom he lost in the years past due to the infection or some other tragedy. His shortness with her, his distancing. He seems to keep everything at a bare minimum possibly in a way to avoid attachment.

The thing about this game... it's almost more fun when stealth breaks down and you have to scrape to survive. I don't know that I can say that about any other game. I always play stealth if possible and will restart a level (not checkpoint) if I mess up. This game is just like, whatever... fun either way. Almost more fun the other way.

I will probably play hard. There may be a difference in the amount of punishment enemies can take, I haven't experimented enough with the difficulties to confirm this. I will say that, it felt "right" on both difficulties. It didn't feel like it was too much or too little.

The main difference is resources. They give you a lot more on normal. In hard, you get one wood stick, and not enough blades to mod it. You get far less ammo pickups. Wasting a shiv to lockpick the door barely nets you anything, it's a hard choice. I personally like hard choices. I like having to really think about how to use limited resources. And how to tactically approach conflict. So I will play hard right out of the gate. I feel like normal might be too generous with resources, and remove some of the tension.

Good to hear it's challenging even for you.

Sounds like playing on hard kind of limits you to playing stealthy and conserving stuff though. Maybe normal for the first run then a stealth play through on hard is good.

Man reading this thread is painful, hopefully they make a PS4 port someday. The game sounds perfect... how often do you see legit survival games with limited resources and intense encounters with just 1-2 enemiess with big budgets made from one of the best devs in the industry. I can't even think of one. The attention to detail is somethin' else. Quite a swan song for this gen.
