your flashlight was probably on the fritz. shake the controller and it brings the light back to full steam. motion controls really killed this game experience for me i mean come on naughty dog why do you have to put waggle in everything.

Come on now.
KuGsj.gif

Unless there are more horrible sections ahead, shaking the controller to bring back the flashlight is only motion gesture I've encountered. It makes sense since it's what you usually do to a flashlight that's about to go out. So if one simple jerk every and now then ruins the experience for you then you should MAN THE FUCK UP THERE ARE INFECTED AND PEOPLE DYING WITH THE HUMAN POPULATION ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION AND YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS?! WHAT WOULD SARAH SAY?!

Lol that's literally the only motion control in the game.

It freaked me out at certain points. It is so negligible that to complain about it is cringeworthy.

Just finished my first play through on Hard. Played it over 2 long sessions (18 hrs.) over 2 days. All I have to say is...... GOTG.

After the incredible beginning I was worried when I went through the first Boston section that slowed the pace immediately but after that it was just non-stop fantastic.

Thank you Naughty Gods!!!

Oh, and do yourself a favour and play with listen mode turned off, it's how it should be played.

Died 160 times, usually multiple times in particular sections.

i was just joking around since people overreact to waggle/motion controls like crazy

it's not even one of the game's problems for me. it's a neat little design choice that doesn't matter much in the long run, but is nice to have.

so far, the last of us plays like naughty dog took all the criticism of uncharted 2's story to heart and made some serious adjustments. i just hope this is the last waist-high corridor shooter-thing from them for a while.

About 60% into the game.

At this point I´m forcing myself to finish it because of the story. ND have yet to figure out how to make fun game- and gunplay.

I also miss the location variety that made this UC games so great.

I´m having fun with the story, but the gameplay feels like work.

I´m going to finish of course and probably share my final thoughts.

Hang in there. The combat gets better once you get more weapons but yeah. It's a bitch in the first few hours of the game.
This is reassuring. I've been getting owned hard so far and I'm about 3 hours in. I can't seem to take out the clickers with anything other than bullets (which is problematic, considering it alerts the others) seeing as I'm out of shivs.

Still loving the game so far, even if I am getting wrecked.

I just beat the game on hard but I wasn't awarded any trophies. This happen to anyone else? I'm kinda like wtf right now. Great ending but im just annoyed I didn't get my trophies.

anyone know why i didn't find the infected creepy or scary at all but the necros in Dead Space creep the hell out of me?

pretty sad when this is what people care about.

It took almost 5 minutes for mine to pop.

These ones don't pop out of vents every time you push a button.

3.5 hours in, this game is really fucking good, cant believe they pulled this off on the PS3. Only complaint so far is the clickers ability to one shot you, although it's not hard avoiding them once you know where to go.

I really love the world they created and the weighty gameplay suits this game perfectly. Also Ellie <3 The characters are fantastic.

And here I thought I was finally able to detect your sarcasm.

Fwiw, I agree with that I found the locations with waist-high covers funny. First thing that came to mind was "GEE ND, I WONDER WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?!"

So I guess my question on the last page got ignored probably by being the last post on the page.

I'll hide under a bed in fear of the game then.

I always thought the shaking for the flashlight was because it was one of those shake to charge flashlights.

Is Survivor mode as hard as it sounds? I'm gonna do a new playthrough and I'm scared :(

Question about an enemy encountered in the school:

I believe his name is the Bloater? Am I supposed to take him down or just run the hell out somewhere?

Kill him/it.

I must've written this a thousand times, don't shake it, hit it against the palm of your hand. It's a great and non intrusive implementation of motion controls. Is there anything people won't complain about?

Just beat it on hard, 14.5 Hours.
This was the best gaming experience I've ever had, thank you naughty dog.

But I also hate you for making all other games seem pointlessly dull now. :)

waist high cover and convenient bricks strewn about, no less

anyways I have no idea how many times I've 'died' playing on hard/no listen mode, 82% and my stats say something like 16. It's more like 200 counting checkpoint reloads, I usually just get pissed and restart if I waste health/ammo. Up until recently though I was usually able to flee and survive just about anything, yet I think at some point enemy human AI gets beefed up a lot and becomes far harder.

Also, lamest glitch I've seen so far: enemy shotgunners popping up behind cover but their heads were behind an object on the counter. I couldn't shoot them because apparently bottles and shit are bulletproof, but they could shoot me.

Take him down. You should have some shotgun rounds and a Molotov or two to help.

if you run out of ammo, Ellie might give you some more. At one point she handed me 6 shotgun shells. Try shooting him in the back, and Molotovs/bombs work GREAT.

I know, I was short as hell on ammo here and wasn't sure if there was some gimmick to it.

Anybody else think the real time inventory/crafting menu was pretty good in this game?

Before this game, I hated all real time menus. It was a detail, that I knew about this game before playing it, that had me worried; but the way you can quickly select what you want and the pacing of the game itself made this work out quite well.

Wow, the game can be insanely tense, but I really love how much you have at your disposal when things go south. Just running away and hiding, or re-engaging the enemies is actually an effective tactic. Then there's of course different ways of fighting, using human shields, various grapple and execution moves.

I'm also amused that they managed to go against the rules and make the game that has no trophies. I guess I'll just receive them at the very end of the game or something, but I'm happy to see how they were not willing to compromise. Also, no save game indicators, no chapter titles - you can tell they really wanted to eliminate distractions that don't belong to the game world.

Yes, I was worried about this too, but ended up really liking it so far.

So Bill was
totally gay
, right?

Because I caught the hints. Frank's note seemed to be hinting at more than just a failed cooperation, but then, it was all very subtle and not at all overt. It could have just been as simple as its face value.

Finished the game last night on hard. This just might be the greatest game that I've ever experienced. The characters and their story really hit me hard and I'll probably have a hard time not thinking about the game for a while now.

The combat felt very brutal and I really enjoyed the stealth side of the game as well, while using a shiv to open up storage rooms was a nice nod towards the Dead Space series. The skill upgrades could have maybe used a couple of more useful skills to choose from (Health upgrade, listening range and aiming stability were the only ones I needed, after that I just took the faster healing one, but who the hell needs to craft faster?), but I felt that they did the weapon upgrades quite well because they resisted adding any "+1 damage with rifles" stuff that always makes you ignore any weapons that you haven't upgraded. I didn't mind the AI ignoring Ellie as it would just be impossible to have her always hide 100% from every single enemy, and no one would enjoy getting discovered by the enemy because of your trusty sidekick. Funny enough, during the early parts of the game Tess actually triggered a couple fights by shooting at some enemies that got too close!

While I felt the game and its design were excellent, there was one aspect I'd love them to fix with a patch: At least 3 times during the game I ran into a situation where I carefully went through an area looting everything I could find, taking out only the enemies I had to, while the rest of the enemies had no idea I was there. However, once I made my way towards the next area the game would pretty much just cheat and trigger all of the remaining enemies to come rushing to my position. I actually ended up using this to my advantage and simply threw a molotov at the pile of enemies - which felt very cheap after going through the area like the fucking Batman.

PS. Loved Bill and thought he sounded and kinda looked like Dan from Deadwood - was a pleasant surprise during the credits hehe. Also, why didn't anyone tell me that I could smash in faces with bricks and are you people telling me that there was some option in the game settings to have listening mode on all the time? :)

I still felt it was only subtly hinted at because he commands a big ass chunk of Boston. There's probably all sorts of books, music, mags, etc. that he doesn't necessarily care about in all the clutter there.

But that was basically the strongest "yes, he is" sort of hint.

Fuck, I'm at it sounds like a little under the halfway point, the
basement of the Pittsburgh hotel
, and I have to ask if the game ever gets that tense/scary again? I ended up just shutting it off when
I was starting the engine, HEARD A CLICKER, and didn't bother to even see what happened when the QTE ended and/or got interrupted.

I'm also wondering if the game loads are faster for the digital version rather than the retail one.

fuck that part. I just remembered it bugged out on me.
I heard a stalker (I think this is where they are introduced? the not-quite-clickers), attempted to cancel the Alan Wake Generator™, which then somehow transitioned into me getting instakilled. I guess infected spawn when you start it but that is super cheap. The bug happened afterwards, I reloaded the checkpoint and was surrounded by assholes who definitely weren't there before. Thank god I was loaded down with molotovs.

Is there some trick to getting molotov's to kill people? I can't seem to get it to even faze them. Worse case was tonight on the subway level, Downtown I think it is? I flank the entire enemy team as they are in a gunfight with two of my teammates. I throw it against a wall where one dude is leaning for cover.. he literally just sits there leaning as his entire cover is engulfed in flames. Another dude runs around from around the corner and tries to kill me.. I down him, and he crawls back through the fire towards another teammate. Doesn't die. A 3rd enemy walks through the fire to shoot me dead, all while the 2nd guy is still just on his knees in the fire waiting to be revived. I just don't understand how it works.

I'm not as far as you, but I'm having a similar experience. I actually bumped the game down to easy, and am salvaging what I can with an experience-tourism approach. Glad most people are loving it, but it's not at all fun for me to play. Hoping the story and characters hook me in. Right now, I'm lukewarm on them.

Graphics and presentation are incredible, and of course I loved the intro, but I'm getting flashbacks to Bioshock Infinite. In fairness, BI's dullness was far more egregious, because I typically have fun with visceral shooters that give me superpowers. The only pure stealth game I've ever really enjoyed was Manhunt, so I might not be the intended audience for The Last of Us. Still, I have to say I think the mechanics could have been implemented much more impressively. If the stealth/gunplay felt similar to, say, the Tomb Raider reboot I'd have been happy. As is, I'd almost prefer to watch it rather than play it.

Reviews are good cos of dat drama, as I had expected. Think Naughty Dog are better off just doing sequels to Uncharted, not sure this was worth splitting the company....

Wait you're supposed to shake the controller to charge the flashlight?

I went through the game for like 30 minutes waiting for my FlashLight to start working again XD I thought the controller shake icon was the Auto save icon. :|

Well at least I know how to make my FlashLight work again, been seriously walking in Pitch Dark waiting for my flashlight to work.

we're at the same part. i completely saw it coming.

1.
all the promotional materials showed ellie + joel all day every day. she was never making it into the later parts of the game
2.
the 'i got bit and hid it from you' thing is a pretty classic trope in the zombie genre, and considering the two of you got separated early on, i figured it happened at some point there
3.
they had her do the 'i'm gonna settle down and enjoy life' speech, which is always impending doom for any character who says something of the sort

She wasn't from the start, if thats what you mean.

Finished it maybe 15 minutes ago. I didn't check the plays time, but for me on normal is had to be around 15 hours. I can check after work today.

The game is a fantastic experience from beginning to end. It's a complete journey in every sense of the word. Good gunplay, great stealth, with limited resources that lead to many tense moments and sequences that really got my heart pumping due to fear and the surroundings. Many absolutely brilliant sequences and gameplay design choices over the course of its story.

A fine achievement for all involved.

Edit:

Forgot to mention that this game has the best sound design of anything I've played on PS3 or PC as far as I remember.

you know, it seems like everybody pops in here after around the 2-3 hour point to say something like this. Or around the lines of 'yeah those dumb reviewers only like the handholding and story'

not saying that's you, or that I agree with 11/10 citizen kane of blahblahblah. Just saying it happens a lot. I think you need to be around 60% to 'get' the game imo. I'd understand if at that point the combat started to bug you since there's a shitload of it around there.

Got 1 more session until I beat the game. I'm at 89%. I played about 4 hours continuously without noticing. I haven't done that since BFBC2 with Neogaf.

I have to get up mad early on tuesday and I stopped playing when I realized it was 3AM...and now here I am talking about it. fuck

It really picks up a few hours in but... after a while did anyone else just become a walking armory? I was crafting up smoke bombs and melee upgrades that I never used just to clear space for more resources around halfway to the 3/4 mark, I eventually started using them but I just had so many resources it was ridiculous. And this was on Hard, I can't imagine what it would have been like on normal or easy.

Didn´t want to draw the Tomb Raider comparison, but that was my first thought as well.

In TR I couldn´t wait for the cutscene to end so I could continue playing - in TLOU I can´t wait for the gameplay to end so I can watch another cutscene and hopefully find myself in a different location afterwards..

Don´t want to hate on the game too much because it is still impressive, but as of now UC2 remains NDs best work to date and they really really need to evolve in the gameplay department..
