The Last of Us |OT| It Can’t Be For Nothing (Spoilers)

I just found the best strategy for the (chapter 4 spoilers)
high school area
ever. Just climb up onto this big truck and uppercut runners off while they're climbing up...

I think I encountered a glitch while doing this where Joel punched a runner and it flew about 5 meters up into the air before falling down. It was incredible.

The game doesn't even really tell you what chapter is what.

I imagine you can bypass most areas if your'e stealthy enough.

If you go to chapter select it does. It's pretty clear there.

So new game plus is only for the difficulty you completed it at right? If you want to do survival you have to start anew?

No. Look at my post on the previous page.

You can actually, there's a trick to doing it.

As soon as you finish your first game, start a new game plus on whatever difficulty, complete the first chapter, then quit to main menu and go to chapter select, select the first chapter and select Survivor for difficulty and the game will consider it a new game plus on Survivor.

With this method, only two play throughs are required for all the difficulty trophies.

Well there it is.

Nope. I remember one area there was this ladder that you could boost Ellie up to, but it wouldnt let me because there were enemies in the area.

Like, I tried, but then the hint thing popped up showing me an enemy that was still in the area.

Also, there are areas with dumpters and shit you need to move, so forget about bypassing those areas.

Like I said, just a very minor complaint.

This game is an exemplary at diversity and very good at it. People always claim that diversity is a hard thing to achieve in video game and yet here ND does it simply and in an understated way. Every single main supporting characters come from different background, gender, sexuality, and race. Most importantly, they are all important and contribute to the story in a meaningful way instead of just there for display or for laugh.

I'd like to especially express gratitude to ND for portraying
a gay character in ordinary way. There's nothing over-the-top or spectacle about Bill. He's just a guy who happens to love another guy. His story is as sad as the other characters and he has flaws and regrets like the rest of them. He contributes to the story and the other characters in a meaningful way.

Thank you so much for giving this character real personality and individuality instead of being the butt of the joke like in other games. You guys really set a standard for how story should be approached in a game.
WOAH!
I totally didn't realize that Bill was gay. I thought he was referring to someone else when he talked about someone he cared about (who he left) and the Frank was his partner who left him because he hated him. That's cool!

Someone halp... ;_; 80% spoilers

So I'm playing as Ellie and getting chased away from Joel. Just fallen off my horse (RIP Callus ;_;) and this stealth part (beach area) is driving me crazy. I've failed it about fifteen times now.

Is there any strategy or a decent path or anything? I can't seem to go anywhere :(

I had the same thing happen in what is probably the same area. Had to kill everyone to boost her to the ladder.

It can be an issue to not have that as well, as you can really just sprint past a good amount of encounters in the game.

There's a lot of bricks and bottles if memory serves me right. I stayed in one of the buildings and lured people in and had a stockpike of stabbed corpses.

The one criticism of the game I have is that when I go to an "area", I have no idea if its an area that I need to clear, or its an area that I can bypass. I wish that this was outlined somehow. I'll know on my second playthrough, but still.

But really, that is such a minor gripe in a fucking amazing game. I cant stop playing it.

I kinda hope they do more with this universe.

most areas you can stealth by

hopefully someone uploads a "stealth" playthrough on youtube soon, i'm sure you can bypass most areas with little to no combat but on hard with no listening mode things get hot almost every time

ERR MAH GERD

Please don't patch this, ND. We shouldn't even have to trick the game into doing it.

Its not detracting from the game I am just saying, though
the part I am at where you play as Ellie is doing a fine job of making the game boring

if you don't like the winter chapter than just stop playing the game.

sounds as if someone is pulling you by tooth and nail to finish this.

Yeah I mean £40 is on the table so I may as well finish it. I feel like I can't give a proper opinion until I have finished it because who knows it may magically get better but I don't have high hopes.

I also think my camera is bugged out its focussing on the feet rather than higher up.

Probably asked before:

brick or bottle?

team brick for life.

Team Brick. I couldn't bring myself to use bottles instead of bricks, because my mind kept saying that it'd be too loud when the bottle shatters, and I wouldn't get to use a stealth kill because all the enemies would be alerted. Darn brain...

well there's nothing wrong with the game.

you said from day 1 that you have no motivation for these characters.

this game is built on the relationship of joel and elliot. if you could care less about these 2 than why even play it?

to give an opinion about how much you hate it? your only wasting your own time. but whatever.

I think thats debatable.

I don't think you get it, I want to enjoy this game and I want it to be good but I just don't see it. I am trying to finish it in the hope that something makes me come around bit I can't see it happening. The game is built on Joel and Ellies relationship yes, though I don't care because I have seen this a hundred times before. It is nothing special, the main 2 are simply boring, other than the occasional funny wise crack from Ellie.

Don't mistake my criticism for 'trolling' please, it is simply how I feel about the game.

You've seen this million times before...but in a video game..done to this level?

You've seen this in other mediums before, sure. But never done this well in a video game format.

dont know if this has been discussed yet but, while playing the game i cannot help but think:
this is so fucking close to what capcom should do with resident evil
really all you'd need to do i think is swap the constant forward momentum for a more "metroidvania" or classic re mansion approach to the environment. have actual puzzles and backtracking etc
everything else they could just fucking leave as is and it'd be incredible

i want this, capcom. do it

Please point me to these hundred games, as i'm very interested in playing them, i need to fill game time before GTAV comes out.

All I know is you can use bricks as a melee weapon and kill a person/clicker just with that. I don't think bottles do the same.

Exactly. Bricks were precious one-shot wonders for melee, as well as a distraction tool. I'll take a bottle if I see it, just as long as I don't already have a brick on me :D

Joel and Ellie are such brilliant and complex characters, the writing in this game was phenomenal. Towards the end
when Ellie goes quiet as you near the hospital, I wasn't sure why (and clearly Joel wasn't either) but on reflection she was clearly coming to terms with her last moments alive. And to see those giraffes and reflect on the beauty of life, despite all the chaos, while Ellie just soaks it all in - knowing her fate. What a watershed moment for videogame story-telling. Just poignant and beautiful. And Joel, his lies selfish and personal, but you could tell he just couldn't face losing her even for the greater good. True lines of grey there

So because its in a game it is supposed to feel new and fresh? Just because its a game does not mean I grant it special privileges on the story.

Not necessarily games but in all mediums as I said above. The formula is particularly used in kids movies.

I never realized that either, I thought they implied they were mates, with partner being used to describe them sticking together through it.

Makes that note you find even more brutal ; _ ;

Is there a point in this game where it becomes gripping? After the intro I've found myself enjoying it but not as much as I feel I should. I'm 2.5 hours in.

Oh wow, I wish I would have known about this sooner. I played on Hard the first go round, and I started a New Game+ on Hard because I couldn't choose Survivor. I'm already well into my second playthrough, so there's no going back now. Luckily, I love the game, so going through it one more time, or two more times if I still don't have all the single player trophies, isn't a bad thing. :)

I agree! Good job Naughty Dog!

Yes, you should. Movies, books, TV...those are older mediums that have evolved and progressed. On the other hand, few games attempt those types of narratives, especially in a bleak Road-esque world, or adult mature stories in general. Games like Mass Effect or The Walking Dead are expections. In fiction overall, TLOU's setup may be cliche but from a game medium perspective, it feels like a milestone.

You say you've seen this formula many times in kids films. But like I said, in games? In a game where young children commit or witness horrific acts of violence and people live in a fucked-up kill or be killed America? Where the protagonist isn't a space marine or wisecracking good guy but a ruthless unlikeable antihero "with few moral lines left to cross"?

Call me crazy but wanting more from my games is a good thing from my perspective. Whether or not it is a milestone in gaming, it hasn't gripped me. I love the whole apocalyptic genre but this just doesn't do it for me. Give me a while to think and ill get back to you on what I think is more of a milestone in storytelling in games.

I just got to
Fall. Met up with Tommy...and I'm now right outside University of Eastern Colorado. Do you get to see Tommy again? I think the brothers angle was done pretty well. There's some sort of tension amongst them, yet deep down, there's some brotherly love.
.

I'm still running out of bullets left and right. At the
sniper scene with Henry & Sam
. I had like 1 bullet each on each of my weapon...and there were about 4-5 guys out to kill me. Really had to adapt on the fly. This game is REALLY something. I love it!

Hahaha, I'm oblivious.
Still, even with that you can still assume they are mates who had a bad falling out.
Edit: You know, two grumpy dudes surviving.

There's also the gay porn mag in the truck, and you can see another one in Bill's hideout (in the room where you find the bag of tools and workbench, I think)

Got kinda tipsy and bought this game today when I was out shopping, despite the fact that I don't care for the uncharted series.

Got up to Ellie. The game is fantastic so far, but it kind of irks me just how similar the mechanics are to uncharted, but how much better they work (IMO).

I swear they even put a tease in at one part in the beginning. You jump down to get a plank, and theres a pipe fixed to the wall going straight back up. Nathan Drake would have just shimmied up the pipe like a monkey, but Joel has to go all the way around.
