The Last Of Us Part 1 - Improvements Listed

You don't get it.

When Digital Foundry covers video games and they say, "This game uses 4K textures" or "High quality textures" does that mean the game will NOT have any low resolution textures?

No.

The Last of Us Remake/Remaster clearly uses higher quality textures while The Last of Us Part II textures are lower quality.

You're the one telling people you're seeing NO improvements to textures.

I used the screenshot from the 2018 demo because I was specifically talking about the character's size. Carefully read the text below the image.

Show me where I was using that screenshot to compare graphics.
You served yourself. What difference does it make whether or not you posted that picture to compare graphics or a characters size? Lol ...the point is- that was still a supposed image of The Last of Us 2 that looks better than anything they've shown from LoU1 Remake! The irony of it all is that the e3 demo from which it comes from wad downgraded for the retail, but here we are almost 3 years later and ND can't quite match that despite us being on an entirely new generation, on a 10 tf rdna2 device with a cpu, gpu, and io system SHOULD BE vastly superior to a ps4 pro! So what does this tell us? That they've been over selling a disappointing ps5 exclusive or Naughty Dog has lost their chops or they've lost their drive to deliver what should be head and shoulders better than LoU2 and at least as good as that e3 demo!

BTW the e3 demo as well as the demo way back for the unveiling of Lsst of Us 1 we're both downgraded heavily. Also, Uncharted 4 had a misleading reveal cutscene they used of Nathan in the jungle as well as a 60 fps gameplay demo- neither of those were equaled in the official release. So it begs the question of whether ND can even be trusted or if they have a habit of misleading fans.

You've been corrected over and over and you're still clinging to your position but you think I don't get it? Sorry but I have functioning eyes and have been following the trends of output from Sony and ND. I'll happily eat my words if somehow the final release is miraculously better than the 5 or so minutes of gameplay we've already seen but why would it? That's not gonna happen.

Nah, you screwed yourself with that image. Posted out of context yes, but it disproves your theory that TLOU remake looks better than TLOU2 because of the PS5 allowing higher res textures and more detailed character models. Clearly, the bullshot footage from 2018 running on the Pro still looks better than anything they have shown for the TLOU remake.

You are arguing semantics while missing the bigger picture which is literally staring you right in the face. The game simply doesnt look as good as the original TLOU2 footage let alone anything remotely next gen.
Quote that post and show me where I used the image to compare graphics.

Do a better job reading.

Lol ...you think there won't be low quality textures in the Remake? Don't get me wrong that would be welcome and indeed might help to separate this project from the last gen LoU2, but you're going to be sorely mistaken if you think there won't be low res textures in it. Part 2 has great texture work for a ps4 pro game with the only low res textures being in distant lods. Even Ratchet on ps5 has low res textures in places, especially in the distance with its lods, just like LoU2 and every single game that's not the Matrix Demo.

The funny thing is that there are plenty of levels in the gameplay deepdown that look row res and flat out ugly.

I dont know whats going on with those character models but they look muddy and low res as fuck. The rest of the world's textures looks last gen as well. I went back and noticed the same fugly textures on characters in TLOU2. Look slightly better thanks to direct capture vs youtube captures above, but you can tell that they straight up lifted the same cloth assets from TLOU2 instead of modeling new ones for PS5 because they look smudgy where the jacket almost blends in with the backpack.

Over 4 actually. That was the E3 2018 demo. Amazing progress ND has made in 4 years on a brand new generation.

But well said. You are 100% right about ND's poor track record of misleading their users. Neil was up there lying his ass off but that clearly wasnt the first time wasnt it? I remember the U4 teaser thread on gaf trying to figure out if it was realtime. Whether the PS4 was capable of running those visuals in realtime at 1080p 60 fps. It had thousands of posts, went on for months, and the only response we got from ND was from Cornie Yu who said it was realtime.

The worst part about that is that GG is following suit. They also created a demo that was misleading. Hell, it wasnt even in the final game. HFW's original trailer was sold as 'footage captured on PS5' and that reveal trailer looks far better than the final game. Foliage, lighting, character models, water rendering, draw distance, underwater detail and ocean life. Everything looks a generation ahead of what we ended up getting in the final game. ND was allowed to get away with their misleading statements so GG was like why dont we create fake trailers and try to pass them off as realtime. And they got away with it. I got so much shit for pointing out that to my normal human eyes, the final HFW release does not look as good as the reveal trailer. They knew their army of fanboys will defend them no matter what.

Read up.

That sums up my issue with Abby in LoU2 ...if they had just made her look like a extremely strong and fit woman that woulda been cool, but instead they made her look like Miss Apocalypse USA. It's rediculous that a woman in a setting like this with such limited resources would be that big and even if it's physically possible, it's really unlikely. This was about Naughty Dogs woke politics most likely the reason they scrapped the way she originally looked for this out of place looking Arnold Swartzenegor wannabe.

you still dont get it even though i literally said that the image was posted out of context. Even out of context, you ended up owning yourself because the PS5 TLOU remake does not look better than the bullshot TLOU2 footage running on a PS4 Pro.

You can quote and sub quote all you want, but just take the L and admit that TLOU remake simply does not look as good as what ND showed up 4 years ago on a much weaker hardware.

Fact is, you can't even quote the conversation in which I used that image to compare it with TLOU PS5 Remake.

What does Abby have to do with TLOU Remake?

Anyone can see that you didn't read the conversation and that's why you can't quote any part of the conversation in which I used it as a graphical comparison.

I know you don't want to admit that you're wrong, but it's clear as day why I used the image and you're refusing to admit that you misread the conversation.

So much energy spent on a game clearly half of you guys don't care about.

Loving the lowres image comparisons on a 4k game by the way. This is amazing work.

Digital Foundry will be out of a job soon.
That doesn't make a lick of sense. If we didn't care about it we wouldn't be spending any energy on it. It's the exact opposite actually. If you can't come up with a coherent thought in your efforts to throw shade at the people criticizing this you should probably not bother. I bet every person in here cares a lot about this Remake, both sides. Your adding nothing but drivel to the convo.

smh....

Gotham Knights also dropped last gen support, it was not a game announced solely as some next gen only title.

So....barely looking any better might be irrelevant to the base that buys those types of games. I just don't know how many really will give a shit man lol

So they simply want The Last Of Us 1 remake to match The Last Of Us 2 graphically and likely never had some plan to put all this man power into a remake to make it on some new engine, 100% using the PS5 or something, its likely majority of that staff is working on that new IP, Fractions and early engine stuff for The Last Of Us 3. So I don't get this whole back and forth thing man, they clearly can make some new engine and spend a lot more years on this and clearly just choose not to in favor making it match Part 2 and moving on to other more demanding projects.

No one is going to mod old Tess's face on to the remake for the PC. If they do, i'll buy you gold. You have a better chance of seeing nude mods.
We will with out a doubt get a mod for her face.
Nude mods unfortunatly will come too and might even come first in some sense, but we'll see mods for all the characters getting their faces back in this

You honestly thought they'll all of a sudden abandon 120M userbase and focus solely on just a mere fraction of that? We've been discussing this over and over in the infamous "next-gen speculation" thread, that the cross-gen period will last two years at least, if no three. Just enjoy the games we get now for what they are, the next-gen-only stuff will come soon enough.
You mean like every time back in past ? ;d Looks on sales, ps4/xone users doesnt even buy same amount of games as on curentgen even tough there is 6x more of them.

I remember looking at sales of cross gen games during the PS4 gen and found some numbers. Watch dogs was around 70% on PS4, PC and X1 vs 30% on last gen and that game came out just 6 months after launch. By the time MGSV came out 1.5 years after the console launch, the split was 95:5.

It's pretty simple. The people who buy games at full price on Day 1 also buy consoles on Day 1. The late adopters who wait till consoles are dirt cheap also wait for games until they are dirt cheap. Delaying next gen games until those late adopters who have no interest in buying your games at $60 let alone $70 is absolutely moronic.

They have finally learned this which is why they have killed off the last gen version of this game, just like the Gotham Knights publisher did. But of course, it's too late to go back and make this game look, feel and play next gen.

Doesn't matter due to the economics. Since they are selling copies of an entertainment product with negligible variable cost per unit sold, it doesn't take long for each additional copy to directly contribute to profit margin. Even at a 70/30 split in favor of next gen sales, that 30% represents $millions in pure profit that would be left on the table. The pandemic, rise in development costs, and consumer reluctance on increased game prices all contribute towards extended cross gen period. As someone who welcomes new gen experiences anyway i can get them, that's why it annoys me when people complain about this remake. Sony/ND could have made it cross gen and made loads more money but they are one of very few developers willing to take the financial hit in order to move the industry forward with the new tech.

Yeah but developing on so many platforms also increase development and testing time so also costs. Just a reminder, I dont complain about this remake and will happy to play it (only finished lou1 once and on ps3) tough it not looks better than lou2 from what I've seen on trailers.

Yeah the latter part of my comments weren't aimed at you just talking about the general discourse.

I personally think it looks better than TLOU2 to the point where I can tell which is which in a side by side comparison within a few seconds. But I also believe ND is holding back on showcasing just how far the leap on fidelity is between pt. 2 and the remake. Rumors of a show next week have been floating around so I'm sure we'll get an even better look before release.

You're annoyed by people complaining about the Remake but as Slimy Snake said this game is new gen in all but name, everything about it screens cross gen, that's what half the complaints are over. Half the complaints are about the mechanics not being rebuilt with LoU2 mechanics but the other half are squarely over the graphics not being worthy of a ND ps5 exclusive.

Edit- I didn't see your follow up that you think it looks better than Part 2. Why would they be holding back on not showing us what actually separates it? They showed 5-10 min of it already and they're gonna want to make a great first impression that doesn't make sense. I think Slimy Snakes theory is spot on. It was developed with both ps4 and ps5 in mind and only recently did they shift it to only ps5/PC. That would explain why the only next gen tech is Dual Sense support (yay?). Every graphical and A.i. feature they showed existed in Part 2 already.

Are you talking about the reveal of FW at the PS5 reveal or are you talking about the first gameplay demo of FW? Sony is the new Ubisoft it seems but they'll never get criticized for it the way Ubi was due to Sony fanboys.

There still isn't anyone who has given an example of Part 1 remake improvements over LoU2 in this thread. Someone tried with "that looks like RT reflections" but that was a fail. Still waiting ..

Yeah, the reveal trailer at the PS5 reveal. I thought it was realtime and indicative of what GG would deliver based on what Sony said before the trailer 'Captured on a PS5' and based on GG's recent history of upgrading graphics from their reveal trailers. Ever since that KZ2 CG trailer debacle, their reveals have always been realtime and have always managed to look better in the final game. Even KZ2's gameplay reveal was improved upon at launch.

I remember making these gifs from the trailer and posting it in every comparison thread showing just how good PS5 games could look, and it turned out I was lied to. You can see from the view count that i spammed this thing in every thread for two years lol.

I used to be one of the biggest sony bots here, but they lost my trust one by one. Neil's interview with Geoff about TLOU remake was the final straw. Now Jimbo has devs do his bidding.

Yeah .. so it's not realtime even? I remember the whe "captured on a ps5" as well just didn't know it was proven not to be real time. Doesn't surprise me that it was a bold faced lie though. Let's see .. ghost of tsushima reveal was supposed to be running on a ps4 pro but the "directors cut" on ps5 doesn't look that good. All the downgrades that ND has done. The Gran Turismo 7 lies where they showed multiple trailers that all claimed at the end "playstation 5 EXCLUSIVE" was a lie. The "we believe in generations was more of a fib than an outright lie".

This seems to be the trend with most gaming companies when they reach a certain level of acclaim and adulation they realize it's better to get that hype train rolling with a bang than risk the tiny amount of backlash they might get from the few hardcore fans who will rightfully call out their BS. There are far more fanboys and gamers who are OK with being lied to and who will lie to themselves just so they can feel better about their purchases.

I love these Sony first party single player games but I will not lie to myself. I can't believe how many justifications I've seen over this latest Sony fiasco. Sony keeps pushing the boundaries of what they can get away with. Not only is this a Remaster at best but it's $70 while removing the fucking multiplayer and ND employees are acting like basic features like "unlockables" and "accessibility features" and "4k" and "60 fps" are a big deal. It's insulting to our intelligence.

PS-i font care if "technically" they remade it using new code. If it doesn't pass the "eye test" of what we've come to expect of a real Remake then that is just another misleading buzz word. I also dont give a fuck about whether they crunched or not or if it has the most amazing accessibility features (since when is THAT a major selling point for 99.9% of gamers?). If you're charging $70 for a game on ps5 made by Naughty Dog then at least make it look f'ing amazing graphically.

Lol, that was me and I don't understand how it was a fail. I have explained multiple times why the examples I showed aren't SSR or cubemaps. So I failed because ND hasn't yet confirmed the tech they're using to render them? Such baseless logic. I guarantee you DF and others will be make a point to discuss the stark differences in lighting and reflections between the remake and tlou2.

I will ask again, can anyone show me environmental reflections on car windows that look anywhere close to this on TLOU2? Because I tried to find them without success.

Got to agree with others that this is an unnecessary remake and the list in the first post reads like a desperate attempt to justify the ridiculous £70 price attached to this game. This is the third version of a game that already runs fine on the PS5 in its remastered format. Had this been released at £40 then it would have been far better value but I would still have argued that it is a bit of a pointless remake at this point except that there's a TV series to promote. I guess that is the real reason this game exists. Will not be buying at launch, certainly not at that price, but may pick it up cheap on physical media on Amazon or whatnot.

Find it a bit strange they use the Lou1 REMAKE to do a side by side comparison.. and not the PS3 edition.
That would show off the difference a whole bunch more then the remaster.

You mean the remaster? If so, I agree but at the same time it gives a more fair comparison in terms of how the remake compares to the best version available atm, and i respect that. Still there really is no comparison.

When people say they lied and this was built from the ground up again...it clearly was. The assets are all different. There's not a single asset that's the same here in this scene.

Despite some of the very vocal critics on Gaf and other messageboards, the majority reception has been largely positive for this, especially considering this is also coming to PC.

I'm not seeing a dominating negative sentiment on social media.
Some are expressing some reservations about the price, but most seem excited about the remake.
I think the constant arguing in threads pertaining to TLOU series gives that impression.

A total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay mechanics, improved controls and expanded accessibility options.

I wonder what the modernized gameplay mechanics could be? It’s been years since I’ve played the remaster, but I don’t recall anything that would feel outdated today.

I’ll be double dipping on this for PC once it hits. Kind of excited to experience it again.

You mean the remaster
Yes, I meant the remaster; I dont know why I wrote remake... got me spinning.
Orginal PS3 vs PS5 Remake to show the big improvments.
Remaster vs Remake is... just fine and probably easier for them to aquire the footage then the orginal PS3 version. But I still do think showing the difference would shut up a whole bunch of arguments we see thrown at it. But I also agree with you, its more fair comparison vs their best version vs PS5 remake.

Hope digital foundry does a better PS3 vs PS4 vs PS5 comparison so we can see it more clearly.

Let us diehard TLOU fans enjoy this game in these new, beautiful, realistic graphics with haptic feedback

Not a single asset reused here. I'm amazed at how far this remake goes in comparison to something like the Demon's Souls, it blows it out of the water.

Yep, plenty of underestimating going on for the potential game changer provided by haptics. If someone claims haptics can't bring immersion to an entirely different level, I'll just direct them to Returnal. That goes double for 3D audio, due to the genre. In regards to graphics, the advanced lighting alone will make TLOU2 look like the PS4 game it is. Not to mention a much more pronounced difference between 4k resolution for the remake and 1440p used in TLOU2 since ND doesn't use image reconstruction. People will be begging ND to do the same rebuild for TLOU2 (hopefully they will).

Since I like going against the grain, I might just get it to piss you people of lol

The game will sell well. People miss Joel and will jump at the opportunity to play as him again with all the PS5 related features.

Detractors will continue to detract and offer their unsolicited financial advice about how best to spend £64/$70

But this is still me when Amazon prime drops the preorder through my letter box
