It's not selective reading, it's perfectly valid deductive reasoning.
"Modernized gameplay". When they are speaking of modernized gameplay in relation to the TLoU franchise, that would lead any reasonable person to conclude that the most modern gameplay found in these games (TLoU II) would be the point of comparison. They don't need to explicitly state, 'It's going to have TLoU II's gameplay and combat' when they make such a statement, modernized gameplay states exactly the same thing. That people now need to scramble to hide behind the absence of the explicit is only a desperate attempt to absolve Sony and ND of their responsibility in blatant deceptive advertising to try to justify a $70 price point.
Granted it's not out yet and we've only small snippets, but even then what's shown is a far cry from such modernization that TLoU II held in the gameplay and combat above the original. TLoU II is a massive improvement over it in every respect, not only in the flow of the action and mechanics, but the conveyance of the brutality, humanity, and horror of the violence. Nothing that was shown in these leaks was even remotely close to the second game.
