The Last of Us Part I |OT| You know Ellie, we really are worth 70 dollars

I don’t even need to watch that video. I’ve been watching both gameplay and cutscene footage for both part 1/2. I changed my mind last night. There’s defl a graphical improvement, just not a generational one

I can respect this take. Loxus Loxus hit it perfectly by mentioning how this game blurs the line between PS4 and PS5 gen. To me it is the best looking game available now, but definitely could've been pushed further. Overall I'm happy with it. Beyond the graphics, it feels much better to play than the original.

It really does. I was impressed.

Combat and sound were things that I werent expecting many differences, but it really feels better.

And the sound is just *chef kiss*

It's a huge upgrade due to the Tempest audio on PS5

You still judging it from different scenes at different light conditions, so I won't prolong this discussion

Yet again I'll repeat myself: go to "Model Viewer" where you can see the ingame models using the same light source. They look the same in both games in terms of detail.

And no, DF didnt say that Fidelity Mode looks the same as Performance Mode. They said that Performance Mode is probably bugged and doesnt run with dynamic resolution, it's a locked 1440p just like TLOU Part 2.

Fidelity Mode runs at 4K, hence the bad performance drops at 40 Hz mode
I think DF said they do look thr same aside from resolution

Another big question around combat was why Naughty Dog didn’t add some of the new mechanics it built in The Last of Us Part II from 2020. In that game, players control Ellie and Abby, both of whom can lie on the ground to hide in grass or crawl under vehicles for cover. They can also dodge, a feature that added a whole new dimension to fights, giving you an out when a Clicker or Bloater is bearing down on you for a one-hit instant kill.
According to Gallant, the ripple effects of adding dodge to the original game would have been too significant. “Dodge isn’t something that lives in a vacuum,” he said. “You have to add tells to the enemy attacks, and now the enemies are going to be attacking differently. You also may need to change the encounter spaces; you need to give a little more room to have that dodge gameplay.” Beyond that, adding dodge would diminish the tension that Naughty Dog tried to infuse in the game’s battles.
“If you have dodge, you kind of have an out. Then all of a sudden, a fight that was very claustrophobic and tense and nerve-wracking – this thing’s bearing down on you and you have to land that headshot to kill it – you get a very different sensation if you have dodge,” Gallant said.
But most importantly, according to Gallant, playing as Joel fundamentally needs to feel different than playing as Ellie, and just porting over her moves would diminish those differences. “The way Joel plays tells you a lot about his character,” he said. “He is a bruiser, he’s a brawler, he’s an older man. The way that he fights is supposed to feel very different than the way Ellie fights in The Last of Us Part II. She’s a younger woman, she’s nimble, she has a whole skill set that’s very different.” Fans can continue to argue about whether Naughty Dog should have gone further with the changes it made to gameplay, but it’s also reasonable that they want to keep the characters in Part I distinct from those in Part II.

Just a bunch of excuses.

They had dodge in Part II and that didnt make the game any less tense because of it. And despite the bigger maps, there were tons of confrontarions in closed spaces.

During the infamous E3 Demo they had Joel dodging some melee attacks. So them saying that Joel is too old and heavy just doesnt cut it.

The truth is simple: budget and time. They would have to add a bunch of new animations to Joel and enemies in order to make it work.

But they can't say it for what it really is, so thats where PR bullshit comes in.

AI in Part II is still much better overrall. They ported the AI but it isnt nearly as complex as its int he sequel (and for a remake, thats fine).

Is the difficulty broken? I started on survival and I had so much ammunition dropped I don't remember OG was dropping so much, like ~15 bullets in the dock area right before chasing Robert.

Did you mess with the difficulty options? There's a setting for amount of resources.

Few hours in:
  1. TLOU2 plays WAY better (obviously);
  2. Remake's graphical fidelity is about on par with TLOU2 (which is okay as it looks super good);
  3. Gameplay, puzzles, level and encounter design aged like milk;
  4. Story, writing and characters are still GOAT.

Does it feel better than the original and 1st remaster? And if so in what way?

I'm waiting for the pc version!

Yeah, devs dont lie and PR talk is not a thing in this industry. My mistake.

It definitely feels better. Way smoother, even when compared to he already 60 fps remastered version.

I think due to Motion Matching

Combat has improved due to better enemy AI and such.

$70 price is what it is. Obviously many people are unhappy about it. Personally, I would be willing to get it for full price, but I’m going to get Ragnarok and play that first. If it’s still $70 at that time, I’ll get it. Since I only paid $10 the first time around (PS4 remaster), I have no problem paying full price for this. But for people who are buying this for the 3rd time now and are pissed about the price, I totally get it.

Where’s the lie, everything he said is valid. Since when did ND ever have budget issues for what type of game they want to make. Your just making shit up. If anything time is factor which the dev mentions in addition Everything that dev said is valid for the game they wanted to make. You’re mad because the devs statement doesn’t match the narrative you dreamed up in your head.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I find it fascinating that even in the Remake they didn't use the same scenes from TLOU2's flashbacks.
Artistically they're match up now but still slightly different.
but they kept it the same as the original 🤔
This was done by The Lost Legacy team right?

No, the DRS isn’t working

Performance mode should be meaningfully higher than 1440p
Are we sure that’s not the intended behaviour? Think it’s supposed to be a locked 1440p ideally would like a higher res personally as it looks noticeably softer than the 4k mode. Isn’t there supposed to be some reconstruction or something.

Pulse 3d users. What audio range do you use? Auto is medium. Shouldnt headphones Be max?

And is vrr for sure working in fidelity mode? I see hz live changing on lg oled but only in performance mode

Naughty Dog never used any form of reconstruction, ever.

When every other 1st party from Sony was using checkerboarding or their own reconstruction(Insomniac), ND was always locking at 1440p + TAA

Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, TLOU 2, all 1440p

So I'm pretty sure that they arent using any reconstruction here

I swear, one of these days that basement is going to give me a heart attack. Typically I don’t find myself dreading certain parts of a game. This (and RE4’s Regenerators) are exceptions.

Especially with the new improved Bloater audio. Damn, ND.

How good is the DualSense support in this game? I hope its better than UC remaster DualSense support because that one was a bit underwhelming.

There are no “teams” like that.

Lost Legacy was made by about 80% of the studio in 12 months.
Then 100% worked on TLOU2 from 2017-2020.

This was made by an unknown number of devs at ND and Visual Arts.

You might be thinking of Shaun Escayg, who co-directed this project and Lost Legacy.
He left ND after LL shipped and returned last year.

2 hours in.. ya so PS4 can't do this. You can argue they could have done better and I agree with that... But - this is beyond part 2. The lighting engine in this is on another level
After an hour and I can only laugh at all the comments on how this looked the same as the remaster.

The only thing that ages this game is the game design but visually this is way better than part 2. At first you don't notice it that much but as soon you're at the QZ 20 years later and you're outside the visuals melt your eyes. I kept saying "holy shit" out loud. Even the gas station during the prologue did that for me.

Imagine someone watching the TV show in a few months, not knowing anything about this IP and just go and play this on a good PC or PS5 for the first time, and then part 2. What a fucking trip.

This is definitely a step up from part 2

The audio, haptics, lighting, texture detail, and physics all make the experience so goddamn immersive and savage

Really is pretty top tier stuff, I’d say it’s pretty close to if not the best visuals the industry has to offer

Have you played through the sewage section with Henry and Sam? That has been the most "next gen" moment for me so far even though PS5 was struggling lol still beautiful. I do hope they fix performance for 4k mode soon.

I just watched easy allies spoiler mode for this and hearing how they praise the lighting, ai improvements and animations, i really wanna play this now.

I have already finished this game multiple times on multiple consoles and i have huge backlog waiting untill ragnarök.

What do you think GAF? should i just pull the trigger and play part 1 to completion this weekend or work through my backlog till gow:r comes out?

You should never be “working” when playing a game, Ditch the other shite and replay one of the best experiences in gaming once more in grounded mode!

Just got to Bill’s town

It’s amazing how these areas are so vastly improved that they feel unfamiliar. It’s like you’re re-exploring them but it feels like the first time again

That’s when you know it’s a good remake

Btw… the pacing in TLOU1 is so much better than part 2 it’s insane. Just like UC2

ND went way overboard with the walk n talk for UC4 and part 2

Felt the same on that area. Almost physically. The high fidelity on textures and geometry, and the number of objects lying around - and their details - changes the feeling of the game. Everything hits you much more.

It’s how the game always should’ve looked in way but the tech wasn’t there.

The only annoying thing is that because of whatever they did to the sound design, I find the clickers scarier than ever and it stresses me out. I turned the sound off a couple of times. :/

Part 2 is a much better game but its still a great game
Part II is so good that made me like Part I.

I was never a big fan of the original to be honest. But they went so fucking dark and made those characters so fucking interesting on II that I had to replay the first one in this new version (also the graphics and artistry on II, of course).

Super interesting to hear Ellie saying these bad ass things that are so consistent with her young adult version. It’s an amazing pack of games.

I got my new 5.1 surround sound setup ready for this games launch and I can't wait to run across the clickers. 😁
