I wonder if they'll sell the MP separately? I would buy that so fast.
As it is now I'll be waiting for a hefty price drop before I double dip.

I've never felt more pleased that I snoozed on a game on release.

It was perfect, really... I was so stoked for this game, but school had me amazingly busy last year! And now it's back, and shiny *_*

Can't wait for this to play multiplayer.

1080p, 60 fps, all 15 maps in one playlist, new perks, weapons, hopefully new modes too.

Lastly, hopefully some of the frustrating nuances with certain mechanics in the multiplayer on ps3 can be ironed out for the ps4 release (bat behavior, shiv lag, etc.).

It shouldn't be too hard to have the Re-mastered version of the game running in Native 1080p w/60 FPS. We're talking about a system that has:

8 GB's of unified GDDR5 RAM, & a 1.84 TFLOP GPU on PS4,

Vs.

The Cell Processor, a 192 GFLOP GPU, & a paltry 512 MB's of shared RAM on the PS3.

Especially when PS4's more developer friendly than the PS3 is due to the CPU being a x86 architecture that's from PC.

Wat?

The problem is the wildly different architectures, 8 core x86 vs single core, dual threaded PowerPC with 7 SPUs and GPU with unified shaders vs fixed, separate pixel and vertex shaders.

They are porting an engine that has been super tuned to the PS3 quirks and probably has a lot of fixes, bodges and super weird optimisations that wont translate or don't make sense on a different architecture.

The fact that they have been working on this since PS3 version ended, around 9 months now, means it's not as simple as having lots of power and "easier" architecture.

Also I stand corrected when I said they wouldn't aim for 60fps earlier in the thread.

After watching this..Idk how I feel about it being in 60FPS. It looks kinda weird.

It looks weird because it's taken 30fps footage and interpolated it to 60fps, essentially it is a sped up 30fps footage, native 60fps would look "normal".

You didn't play it at all?

I personally redbox'd it. Didn't end buying it though. Now whenever I pick up my PS4, I'll get this version.

Lol, I'm locked in a debate with a guy elsewhere saying all this...

if buy halo4 or 3 now, ul get them for 15-40$ max and this is not just limited to consoles either. any timed console exclusive released on PC is sold at for 40$ too. they are mostly digital downloads but still they are complete games with added bling due to stronger hardware plus they are new experiences for PC users.
heck even the remakes, remasters, HD conversions weren't full priced like this on PS3/360.

To my reply that Halo 3 and Halo 4 are old games, he said this:

how old? srsly u going to nitpick on these things now? tell u what...il answer ur question if u can give me at least 2 examples of remakes that were priced at 60$ last gen. also don't forget that delayed PC releases are mostly just months apart and they don't sell at full price either.

The guy has played TLoU, he is a die hard green machine fan and was sour all over when TLoU won so many awards and was pushed to universal acclaim status, since he voted for Bioshock: Infinite to win GoTY.

Well, the reason you make a remaster is to change things. You then sell it by explaining to people what's different from the version they already paid for, especially if you're asking for full price again. So yeah, they should spell everything out, because that's what marketing entails. Try not sounding so salty next time someone asks a simple question.

Do you seriously think out of all the developers in the world, Naughty Dog would be the ones to neglect to do anything with their textures in a remaster?

I bet he was happy as a hippo during the PS3 infancy, when the exclusive games rated and sold poorly, unlike many of the games on the green side. The way things are now must be hard for him. ;)

Everybody and their momma knew this was coming and I'm so glad we were right. Bought this day 1 on ps3 and then my disc laser died. Took months to get it fixed and by the time I did the rumors of the PS4 version surfaced. I think sold it to fund the ps4 version. 1080p and 60fps is a dream! I just need GTAV and all will be right with the world.

I really can't believe the negativity around the jump to 60fps. I can't process that stance to articulate why it's so misguided.

Were the PS3 cinematic rendered at 720/30? How much bigger would they be if they switched up to 1080/60? Might not fit on a bluray?

I really can't believe the negativity around the jump to 60fps. I can't process that stance to articulate why it's so misguided.

It's partially hard for people to admit I think, that a game they loved despite having serious framerate issues had a major flaw that needed fixing. They enjoyed it at 20 to 30 fps, so why not put in 'more graphics' and leave the framerate about the same.

admitting 60 is better is like admitting that the PS3 version pointy ankles.

at least, I think that's partially what's happening.

I hope no one is buying into the framerate and resolution don't matter nonsense that various companies and media outlets have been spewing forth, although I'm not going to worry too much as more and more developers seem to take notice of how important that stuff really is.

pushing for higher framerates. pushing for native resolution. even offering optional framelocks for games that run in the 30 to 40 fps area. life on the PS4 has been very happy indeed in that regard.

Is it only me that's hoping for a Tommy SP DLC to see what he went through during the outbreak?

Knowing a bit of his backstory in the game, there's probably enough there for a whole new game.

I still want to play in one form or another Ish's story.
coming back to find shit has gone to hell is not a unique premise but still intriguing. Particularly interested to know what happened to them after they had to escape the sewers

I'm interested to know what the maximum quality video PS4's hardware decoding capable of. By hardware decode, I mean the PS4's fans run on low speed once a video or 2D image displays fullscreen..

Killzone Shadow Fall's videos were pretty disappointing compared to say, any of the Final Fantasy XIII's on PS3. I'm sure it's just poor encoding but it'd be nice to know the upper limits.

Well there is the maximum it can decode (which should easily be able 50+MB/s AVC or even 4k video), and then there is what bitrate can the devs spare to play back cinematics while loading other assets in the background?

30Mbit/sec is a more realistic figure for high quality game 1080p30 video which is less than 4MB/sec and there's plenty of RAM to buffer ahead.

There have been a few The Last of Us threads in the last few days, so I didn't want to create a new one.

That being said, I feel the need to express my experiences with this game.

I borrowed TLoU as well as a DualShock 3 from my friend back in the beginning of the year. I just beat Normal mode yesterday for the first time last night. My final playtime was just north of 30 hours.

And holy SHIT. What a wonderful 30 hours it was. I don't think I've even got the vocabulary or writing skills to accurately convey the way this game felt. Game of the generation? I've been playing games since the NES was out, and I'm fairly convinced this was the best game I've ever played in my life. Maybe that says something about me. Maybe that says something about Naughty Dog.

I am so, so glad that I never had anything about TLoU spoiled for me. Going into it, I "knew"
it was a zombie game, and the only footage I had seen was a (from E3 maybe?) few minutes of gameplay inside of a hotel. In the end, I wasn't even 100% on the money with what I knew.
I am so glad that I didn't know anything else.

For me, this was the first game in years and years that really pulled me in. I didn't feel like I was playing a game. I felt like I was surviving. I felt like I was protecting. I felt like the world around me was madness and death. I grieved. I killed. I got angry. I felt horror. I worried.

I played a masterpiece. Holy shit.

Yes, it's an amazing game. But you played on normal, go back and play it on survival. It's the true TLoU experience ;)

I felt pretty similar to Ecrofirt, I don't think it's the best game ever, it's the best action game ever probably, but it was incredible. I think the people who're going to get to play it first time on PS4 are really extremely lucky. As amazing as it was, it's going to be significantly better now.

Indeed. For the first time in my gaming life I feel envious of gamers that will experience a remastered TLOU for the first time. >: [

However, no matter how many times I go over it in my mind, there was no way in hell that I wouldn't have gotten TLOU day one on the PS3. So, that's my comfort.

I feel similar to Polygon. It's a 7.5 at heart, making it FullHD will not change that score significantly.

*sighs...* I can't believe I am doing this but it fits so well...

Naughty Dog just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about console culture (I'm an expert), but not understanding how things work and not making sense are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on PC where you can become successful by being logical. If you run at 60FPS over on consoles, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is that illogical people, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the Last of Us for either system, nor will they purchase any of Naughty Dogs games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Naughty Dog has alienated the unreasonable side of the market with this move.

Naughty Dog, publicly apologize and run the Last of Us or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I don't really buy this. To me, the interpolated footage looks pretty much the same in terms of weirdness as the UC3 native footage looked like. In such a low bitrate blurry video, the interpolation flaws are not that noticeable most of the time, as they are hidden by the low bitrate blur.

The UC3 footage looks strange, but I've never seen another 60Hz game look strange, I think it says much more about the effort given to whatever reason that video was made than it does about 60Hz.

I think all this concern is missing a major point, ND made the game, and they have decided 60Hz is preferable, it always would have been 60Hz had they been able to without huge visual compromises.

I can't believe you felt the need to it, either. You've managed to mischaracterize what many have said to the point where the attempt at satire falls flat.

In reality, Naughty Dog will use their best judgement to balance the benefits of frame rate against improved lighting, sophisticated material shading, and model detail to give us the best experience they can. Like they always have. If the existing assets and design for The Last of Us mean that a solid 60fps makes sense, then they'll go for it, but they won't treat it as a holy grail worthy of significant sacrifices to achieve. They'll doubtless follow their artistic vision as always.

I just think the animation in the game was never meant to be running at 60FPS. It's just not precise enough and detailed enough, so when you can see all the transitions so clearly, the illusion breaks apart. Their animation doesn't look so cartoony, so I think you run into an uncanny valley effect when you can see it to clearly.
I do realize however that much of this seems more a problem when you just watch the footage, while it wouldn't when you play it, as you don't have as much time to pay attention to animation details then. I also think on the other hand TLOU at 60 will feel more lifelike which was possibly their goal all along. I'm just not sure the cutscenes need that treatment.

I'd rather ND put their effort towards ironing out the wonky AI behaviour (enemies standing right on top of Ellie and not even noticing she's there, etc.) rather than spending all their time trying to hit 60fps. Wishful thinking, I know.

I'm fine with the way they deal with Ellie now. I do NOT want a 20 hour escort mission.

Why would they iron out behavior they deliberately put in the game?

What you want is a design change, not a bug fix.

Because it ruins immersion and suspension of disbelief when an enemy is looking directly at her and behaves as if she's not even there. .

Not necessarily. I was thinking more along the lines of programming her AI and movement so that she constantly stays out of enemies line of sight and only pops out to help when your cover is blown (not having to escort her). There are even creative ways to deal with this. (She's small and could probably fit in certain hiding places others can't).

I just bought a PS4 after seeing the announcement, despite living in a country where it costs an absurd.

That's how much I want to play this game. My ps3 got fucked up and this is my only chance.
