'The Last of Us: Remastered' coming to PS4, July 2014, [1080p, targeting 60 fps]

I don't really buy this. To me, the interpolated footage looks pretty much the same in terms of weirdness as the UC3 native footage looked like. In such a low bitrate blurry video, the interpolation flaws are not that noticeable most of the time, as they are hidden by the low bitrate blur.

I watched an interpolated Hobbit Bluray and I've seen the HFR version at cinema and they are night and day differences.

Man I'm so happy with this announcement. I bought TLoU on the PS3, but shortly after that, my PS3 died. I did end up beating it, but I never got to go back to platinum it like I always wanted. I had also bought the season pass, and I never even got to see the Left Behind DLC. Definitely double dipping on this one.

Not necessarily. I was thinking more along the lines of programming her AI and movement so that she constantly stays out of enemies line of sight and only pops out to help when your cover is blown (not having to escort her). There are even creative ways to deal with this. (She's small and could probably fit in certain hiding places others can't).
She follows Joel though, it's you the player that chooses her placements primarily. If they did what you're suggesting, she's need to teleport to those places, like Elizabeth, which is even more stupid.

There were a couple of moments where their actions were clearly very stupid, like you moving slowly and crouched not to make a sound, and Bill to come thundering through the environment, those would be easy to fix, but I think what you're suggesting is awful.

Because it ruins immersion and suspension of disbelief when an enemy is looking directly at her and behaves as if she's not even there. .

If you're interested in Ellie's AI you can watch ND's talk on GDC Vault (it's an hour long), I watched it earlier today myself.

They know they don't have the perfect AI for Ellie and they know it's immersion breaking. They simply prioritised game design over believability but they also wanted Ellie to stick with you. It would have been nice for someone to ask during the Q&A whether they didn't have enough time to improve (they scrapped Ellie's AI 5 months before release and redid it) or it's a limitation of PS3.

This. It would probably take a complete re-work to get her to follow you analytically based on the position of the enemy, and break following path to enter a hiding pattern, and then be able to resume following your path when enemy AI is distracted. What you want, while it sounds simple, would probably take a significant amount of work (game changing quite literally) and would be unrealistic, given how ND are just porting this to get used to the PS4 engine.

Big difference is that the interpolated footage of a 24FPS film will not be able to reduce motion blur that's in the original 24FPS footage. This is not the case with TLOU footage as it doesn't have any motion blur to begin with (I don't think that TLOU cutscenes have persistent object based motion blur anyway) so the interpolation has the ideal material to work with. Even if this not being the case, as I said to me this footage looked remarkably similar to UC3 native 60FPS footage, and I just don't like the look of it, probably due to animations not being perfect enough to survive the high framerate scrutiny.

Thanks, I'll look that up and watch it. I'm also highly curious if the things they could do with the AI were limited by the PS3 hardware.

It's one of the most confounding things I've seen here in a while. I can't even wrap my head around it.
You had similar situation about the decision to not make Ico remaster be 60FPS, and for the same reasons. I thought it was cool that Ueda didn't want to do that even though they could. The animation just wouldn't look right.

That's because the animation was keyed at 30fps. It would literally be in fast forward if that was 60. TLoU doesn't have that issue. Very few studios do that anymore and the few that do are mostly Japanese.

It has been, but I didn't comment about it at the time, and there's one thing that is really not good.

The cloud shadows are gone.

They'll probably be in the final release. The trailer was clearly hastily thrown together and it still has a few months left.

Wow. Just watched the trailer. Well "trailer". After 50 second seeing GotY awards I thought I was reading a curriculum vitae instead of watching a teaser.

At least they're not doing the cover Arkham City style.

I'm completely fine with the way they handled Ellie's presence during encounters, I agree they could iron out her behaviour so she would actually not just run around but if enemies were able to see her lots of people would complain about her ruining their stealthy approach.

I'd rather ND put their effort towards ironing out the wonky AI behaviour (enemies standing right on top of Ellie and not even noticing she's there, etc.) rather than spending all their time trying to hit 60fps. Wishful thinking, I know.

As much as you might think you want that, you really don't. Having an NPC ruin your experience sucks. ND made the right choice.

Can't wait for this to play multiplayer.

1080p, 60 fps, all 15 maps in one playlist, new perks, weapons, hopefully new modes too.

Lastly, hopefully some of the frustrating nuances with certain mechanics in the multiplayer on ps3 can be ironed out for the ps4 release (bat behavior, shiv lag, etc.).

Yeah that sounds glorious. Sort of topical but not really do you know if then upgraded 2x4 can have two hits? I thought it was one and done but I've been seeing two hits online lately.
