Cringeworthy comment right there. Thread is gearing up to become just as embarrassing as the UC3 thread.

Quit the shit.

It's one man's opinion. Is it really that hard to believe that people are moved by Naughty Dog's work? I never understood the giddiness people get when mocking people's enthusiasm over a game. "Waiting for tears and meltdowns" - is about as silly as waiting for "10s and perfect scores".

Feeding into cynicism and watching people become disappointed is a stupid past time.

Bayonetta is terrible? You crazy, son.
I didn't like it either. I would give Uncharted 3 a 10 out of 10 also. Opinions? How do they work?

Open (love) letter to C. Balestra :

http://www.gamalive.com/actus/16887-the-last-of-us-lettre-ouverte-naughty-dog.htm

in french. Nothing but praise. Guy loved it. He says it will punch you in the guts

Very rough translation :

Dear M. Balestra...

Oh and after all, we are in a young and dynamic industry. There is no place for fancy protocol and long presentation ceremony. Here, we call ourselves by our first name, we tap in each other’s back and drink beer together.
So, even if we one day reach a respectable age (only if age can ever be) because, if I recall correctly, born the same year, working in the same industry for the same time but are both from different side of the mirror, please let me use a more direct tone for the occasion.
Furthermore, we meet several times. I even had the pleasure to interview you, for my present site, GamAlive.

Anyway.

Dear Christophe,

I present myself today to take the feather (its an expression, I actually just grab my keyboard) to thanks you for The Last of Us. You, and all your team at Naughty Dog.

I just beat the game. Wah. What an emotional choc. What a beautiful, incredible, beyond understanding slap.
Thank you. Thank you a thousand times for this amazing experience. Thank you for this amazing adventure.
The Last of Us is one of these game for adults, too rare, that gaming needs. Thank you for intelligent scenario, really worked out, that does not spare any reallity to the players. We are a thousand miles away from Hollywood good moral where we deliberatly stay silent on basic logic or avoid all the dirty questions the audience have on the tips of their lips.
Here, everything is shown. The player gets his face smashed by an horrible reality that is nothing short but true and basic in it’s more horryfing form and it will take you to tears, beyong moral, beyong acceptance.

The Last of Us is a great game. What am I saying, a giant game that deserves to stay in memories thanks to his perfectly mastered treatement all along. My god what a slap !

The story plays with our feeling in a esquishing way. You will care for the characters as they care after each others so their sacrifices and challenges are then more intense and painfull to us.
Pushed by solid graphics, this story is that captivating, the game is that good that it will push back every littles concerns we could have to the «it’s not important» box (you can read about it in our test that will be online tomorow). A true great game, really.

The Last of Us is one of this game that will move your guts, will make you feel passionante and move you. A monument. A pure and intense moment of bliss.

Thank you. Thank you a thousand times for this unique experience.

During my already long career as a game journalist (already 17 years) it’s the first time I’m writting such a thing as an open letter. But it is deserved : The Last of US is without a doubt the best game I ever played. If not the best. That’s it. Just Amazing.

And who cares if this entire letter can look fishy. I know that today, criticizing is a way for many to feel alive online. And too often we tend to not got over enthousiatic, we do not congratulate. To keep an editorial line because many believe that doing so, praising in public or congratulating something, is selling ourself. I do not believe that. I think that if we are harsh towards failures, we should be equaly praising masterpieces. This is why I let my self take off my hat and bend over for this one master’s work.

Thank you for daring. Thank you for not censoring anything. Thank you for going this far to make this project written in history as one of the best game ever.

Friendly,

Cedric Gasperini

That said, Naughty Dog will end this gen with a perfect record. 4 games scoring higher then 90 on metacritic. Wonder how many studio's can say the same thing.

To be fair I think there are very few studios with the resources to make that many AAA games in the course of a few years. My point here being that lots of smaller extremely capable devs could theoretically produce just as many great titles if they had the chance. Similarly, developers that clearly have more than one team (eg Intelligent Systems, Square, EA) and that have to spread themselves thin, whether it be because of pressure from a first party or simply to support the studio. In this sense, it can be quite unfair to treat say, the galaxy/3dland Nintendo teams, as "Nintendo". I often wish with bigger devs we had more insight into the teams and who is actually making what.

I'm not taking anything away from naughty dog, I love uncharted 2 and 3 and the first one was enjoyable too, but you can't deny they are in a very privileged position as far as developers go (huge budget, first party backing). There are lots of developers that deserve this support just as much but for whatever reason, maybe commercial success and mainstream appeal of their games, they don't get it and are unable to work to their full potential.

Luckily naughty dog are and are making this game for me...

This is slightly disingenuous. They have been in a privileged position pertaining to resources because they've earned it. And they are one of the very few developers in the industry who have made full use of those resources to the best effect consistently.

I hope the reviews tell me if I should turn the listen mode on or off (I'll be playing on hard). I don't really buy the whole ''wallhack'' whine if the game is designed around it but if turning it off indeed improves the experience even if by making you need to play a lil more carefully but not making it tedious then sure, why not.

Seems like some of you want another UC3 thread to happen.

Exactly but let's act like the Uncharted 3 thread was the only thread on GAF where a negative score didn't set off the same type of reaction. I forgot what Nintendo game got a bad review and people on GAF acted just as silly but MamaRobotnik wasn't making any lists of them so I guess people don't remember.

It happens with every big tent pole game or exclusive. Literally every single one. I think the biggest fall back was from the infamous Gamespot 8.8 to Zelda Twilight Princess.

Quit the shit.

Feeding into cynicism and watching people become disappointed is a stupid notion.

That´s absolutely not what I´m doing.

Calling TLOU "the game of gaming history" (based on what exactly? Surely not on playing it...) simply is cringeworthy.

This very thread--

Watching this thread and hoping for fanboy meltdowns.

Dont let me down SonyGAF!

This is exactly what I'm advocating against. Purposefully mocking Sony fans and passively derailing the thread to make it a dick measuring contest. Come on son, you are better than that. This shit is getting old and pathetic.

Not really cringeworthy. It's like declaring that the food you're eating is the best you've ever had in your life, whether or not it's true. It could very well just be expressing one's fleeting feeling. I think you're looking at the simple statement deeper than necessary, and arguing about this (me included) is more "cringeworthy" than anything brought up about this. :p

I actually want this game to get a bad review just to see the reactions, this thread certainly has potential to top the UC3 one.

Disclaimer: I'm buying the game, I just love meltdowns

Fair enough. But you can't deny that it helps just a little that their games this Gen are in the possibly the most popular genre ATM, just in terms of getting the support. I also feel that uncharted 1 is a big step below the other two, and in that sense it is a blemish on their record. Props to them for pulling it out of the bag after that though Jesus!

Declaring the best food I´ve ever had is still somewhat different from declaring it the best food in food history.

However I agree. I´ve probably taken it too far already.

Will be playing TLOU this Saturday (woo!) and will probably be back with some absurd statements of my own.

I wonder if someone will bother compiling a list of people who are hawking for the game to fail so they can watch people get disappointed.

You seem like the right guy to do it! ;)
