Normally I play with the american dub, but I would make an exception if someone made something like that.

Even better if you keep say everything in the most monotone way possible.

Hmm...yesterday I had no issues shopping, but today I crash every time I select "shop" in the starting town. Without the high resolution fonts it works fine though.

Zareka

PC version will be fine once they get the kinks worked out. The Ys games also had issues around release and all the serious issues were taken care of pretty quickly.

It sounds like the new font is the cause of most of the headaches.

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding, I meant it more in the way of this:
That's not the question to be asked. The real question is why have you owned it a year and not played it? :(
Guess this was the wrong thread for that, but I figured this would be more active than a PSP OT, if there ever was one.

And the answer is, well, I don't know. I just don't know why. :(

My game just updated on Steam and for the last 15 minutes I've been able to play in 1080p and high res fonts without a crash. So... the issue might be fixed?

Got the update.

I kept a save from the same spot I was where I got the crashes earlier. I re-enabled high resolution fonts, and loaded it. I opened the menu, and the item list loaded, but then canceling out of it crashed the game. I reloaded it again, and this time canceling out of the menu resulted in this:

ed6screwy.jpg

I took that screenshot and alt-tabbed out (I'm playing in windowed mode, mind), and after about 30 seconds the game crashed in the background.

I loaded it again and tried to stay at Hotel Rolent and it gave me the same crash as before.

Sara put up a patch that she's hoping will fix some crash issues.

@Zareka - There should be enough text updates in the PC version (some crucial plotpoints being revised, for example) that I think the PC version might be worth those. Some terminology is different that will be reflected in SC, too. Still, I work for XSEED, so don't take my suggestion alone.

EDIT: Disregard, there was another update while I was writing this post.
Hotel Rolent crash persists with all of my saves with highres fonts on, it seems.

I ended up mapping the map rotate to the left / right on the right joystick and just use the keyboard for s-breaks (or use the menu during my normal turn if I don't need to interrupt a turn versus a boss or something.)

I did the same. In fact, thanks to the suggestion of Joy2Key from Aeana from earlier in the thread, I've pretty much been able to set the control configuration up as I usually like it in jrpgs. Feels really comfy now (minus the S-break problem).

I did that with joytokey and It took me 40 seconds.

I'm using Joytokey already (to map the d-pad to directional movement in addition to the left analog stick) and I'm still too lazy. :) Honestly, I'm more likely to map camera rotation to the right stick and leave S-Break on the number keys, just because I hate using the triggers to manage the camera.

EDIT: And apparently I'm not alone in this...

Just got another update. Now the Hotel Rolent issue seems fixed. Item menu issue also seems fixed now.

I didn't realize she pushed out two updates in a row, so my bad for confusing bug reporting above.

you got update? I didn't, and I was waiting high res fonts to be fixed before playing today as I kinda need them. At least steam shows no update for me.

edited: disregard this post, steam bug about not updating automatically is back for me, just checked and update is waiting there.

No problems with CTDs here as well.

Hatsuu, what about that chest achievement number discrepancy? Is the plot-relevant chest not counted by design, or is this a bug?

Sucks that the game came out with so many issues, but good to see the speed with which the issues are being addressed. Hopefully everything is ironed out by the weekend at the latest so people can enjoy this great RPG.

I've been told that plot-relevant chests don't count, so it should be going up all right.

All this talk about bugs and battle voices does worry me now... I'll hold off until the game is more stable, but I have to ask: can you turn off the battle voices completely (like in Shining Force 3)? I really hate them for the most part, especially in English since it sounds so cheesy (in Japanese I can tune it out more easily)? Are they non-stop chattering like in Xenoblade? Because I found the Xenoblade battle voices to be absolutely insufferable, to the point where it significantly impacted my enjoyment of the game. (The game also had tons of other flaws so it wasn't just that, mind, but holy shit were those voices annoying for real...)

You can turn them off in the psp version, so I assume you can here too. Really, there is only a couple of lines.

There isn't much in the way of voices at all, it's mostly just grunts. And yes, you can turn them off completely. Select disable battle voices in the config menu and no one will make a sound for the whole game.

Domo, Hatsuu-dono.

Steam Community never stops to deliver:

Is this done with RPG Maker as the core?
I have done some programming in RPG Maker and I see the similarities, but not many. There is so much more in this game that would require a TON of extra work. Of course all of the art work is custom, the 1080p def widescreen is extra, the controller support, music, sounds, views auto rotating, 3D water, all custom.
Beautiful game! The annoying things of stock RPG Maker have been altered in this game. Very much so.
So is this a souped up version of RPG Maker? I'm impressed, especially if Sara is the only programmer.

Is there any way to make the font bigger? Playing this on the TV that's 8+ feet away, it's a little tough to read the text.
Not even changing the resolution seems to change how big the text bubbles are when characters are talking.

There's a straight up on/off switch for battle voices, and it's mostly just the main characters, not monsters or other enemies except for some more important ones, (series spoiler)
some if not most of which become playable characters in the later installments, another reason to get the VA recorded for the whole Sora/Sky series done at once.
Drove me completely crazy in Atelier Iris the brief time I tried out the dub to see seemingly EVERYONE AND EVERYONE had some witty one liner in battle, when I think some of them just made noise in battle. Even if I'm wrong there... yeah, that language barrier can help a lot for that sort of repetitive nonsense.

It's not that big of a deal here anyway, generally just "hah!"s and "hmpf"s and a couple of actual lines during special attacks and after the battle.

Was super hyped for this, played an hour last night...

Hype has died down a fair bit. I haven't seen a more trope-filled first hour in a jRPG in a long time. Battle system seemed reasonably simplistic, though I like the "turn slot bonuses" on the upper right...

I didn't know RPG Maker could make 3D games. And it certainly couldn't back in 2004 when this game was originally released!

I don't see what's simplistic about the battle system. It's simple, not very complex from the looks of it, but it doesn't seem dumbed down from anything...maybe you could make the case for sequels, but not the first game. Actually, this battle system's an improvement compared to previous ones in the franchise.

It's not necessarily simple, but the game is easy enough that it may give that impression. Hopefully the difficulty unlocker comes soon enough.

I haven't seen anyone mention it here but does anyone else have an issue whenever you first enter the camp menu where you have no control at all (using a gamepad)? Usually I can just back out and open it again to restore control, and it only ever happens the first time during a play session, but it's mildly annoying nonetheless.

I commented to my girlfriend about the same thing (the highly cliched combination of 'stubborn, tomboyish girl who can't cook worth a crap, hates studying and doesn't think things through' and 'level headed adopted boy found abandoned who is treated like a family by the people who took him in, who just happen to be a widowed father and a girl who's the same age as the boy'). I can't help but feel I've played through this story a few times in the past in other games, but I give the game a pass for a couple reasons:

- It's a 10 year old game, so this particular ground, while still pretty heavily tread upon even then, was less so than it is now.
- The game mechanics, soundtrack and well-translated script make the game worth the effort, even if the story is built upon a foundation of JRPG tropes and cliches.

I actually own the PSP version, but didn't bother playing it because the other two games in the trilogy weren't ever going to be released. Now that there's a chance we'll see all three, I'm buying (and playing) this one in the hopes that XSEED follows through with the rest.

Yes. This was actually a bug in the Japanese version too, so I'm not surprised it's still present here.

Well, I'm certainly not done. I'll be playing the game for at least several more hours before rendering any kind of real verdict. Just a little disappointing on the outset. = P

simplistic battle system? for real?

Also I don't see how having a tomboy girl that obviously isn't interested in cooking or much of studying, because if she was interested in those things, she wouldn't be a tomboy, is suddenly trope-filled. Seriously, not everything that makes sense is bad, you know.
If anything it is other way around, trope-filled would be a girl that cooks for a boy and father, and basically is just a decoration outside of that, or npc (><)

edited: forgot to quote posts in question, but that probably doesn't matter, anyway.

Well, there's more a few cliches in there -- they just started kind of running together, and I've forgotten plenty too (the whole idea of a bounty hunting/hired help organization like the Bracers has been done so many times by now that it's a JRPG staple at this point).

On the other hand, the fact that the game relies so heavily on them doesn't affect my liking of it a single bit. Falcom is just doing what works (and really, there are few companies that can do no wrong in my eyes, and Falcom is one of those).

You can use them from the menu during the character's turn. The s-break feature is so you can trigger it any time in battle without having to wait for your turn. You can bind 1, 2, 3, and 4 to the right analog stick on your controller with a program like JoyToKey.

Just want to confirm that turning hi-res fonts back on doesn't seem to cause crashes on my end anymore. Based Sara.

Although I've been noticing more text formatting errors now that I can see more legibly. Orbment shop menu especially caught my attention, when looking to open new slots.

Sorry for challenging you for this, because the game is pretty cliched, but in Trails I find playing as a bracer (which is pretty much policeman/detective/bounty hunter all in one) is a pretty refreshing change from the standard adventurer's guild thingy in other RPGs and it's the structure provided from this which draws me into the world.

Actually, this battle system's an improvement compared to previous ones in the franchise.

Ehh, I think that's up for debate. It's better than the version of the battle system featured in the PSP remakes of the Gagharv Trilogy games, but the original PC Gagharv games use a real-time battle system that's pretty unique among JRPGs (even today), and I admittedly was a little disappointed to see that the real-time elements were removed for Trails when I first started playing it.

I've gotten used to the turn-based nature of Trails now, and the amount of depth in the battle system is pretty astonishing when you really get into it... but there are days I still find myself wishing that Falcom would go back to their real-time roots with this series, much as there are days I find myself wishing Falcom would bring back the bump system in Ys.

I guess sometimes, the classics just stick with you. ;)

Is anyone else having a problem actually starting the game? It pops up for half a second and shuts down.

Try a different resolution. It might have something to do with your aspect ratio or whether or not your chosen resolution is a custom resolution.

I couldn't get the game to launch at all when I picked a custom resolution but others work fine.

Can't map the triggers? Disappointing.

You can with a little time spent in JoyToKey. Native support would be better of course but the game's roots as an ancient PC game may make this difficult.

Are you trying to load it windowed at your native resolution? If so, yes. My native res is 1680x1050, and I can play the game fullscreen at that resolution, or windowed at anything below it, but windowed 1680x1050 it just opens and then closes immediately. Which is weird, because it was letting me play fine at that res a week or so ago.

I don't think it's that unique. Growlanser has been doing a similar thing since it started. I'd say it's way better than the system in the original version of ED3 in particular since you can't even control your characters directly in that game, and are instead limited to choosing presets. They changed that in the Windows release, of course. And I know you said JRPGs, but western RPGs have been doing real-time-with-pause for a while too.
