So I am finally going to buy this after a long wait and I just wanted to know whats the current status on the bugs overall, as I remember it being quite a mess at launch. The consensus is still that I should not turn the HD subtitles on? Or is it fixed by now? Any advice regarding that?

Basically everything is fixed minus a few very minor widescreen issues. There is the occasional geometry issues at the very edges of the screen that result in some black triangles in the ocean and whatnot, there are some SS's a page or so back to illustrate. There are probably still a couple others but that is the best example I can think of. HD fonts are fine.

So, I finished the game. I was honestly unconvinced up until the last two chapters. I guessed some twists fearly early, like (end-game spoilers, you have been warned)
Kloe being a princess, Olivier not being a simple wandering musician, that Richard was up to no good, that Joshua was an assassin of some sort (he was just too knowledgeable and good in combat ~ his S-Break "Black Fang" just screamed overpowered, not to mention his other powers) and that Professor Alba wasn't all nice thanks to his "stare", the only time we see his eyes, which was quite eerie... Though I really didn't expect the revelation at the end about him.
And now I need the Second Chapter. Like, right now. Oh, and also a save with a perfect Bracer points score ~ I missed a few smoke bombs back in the Orbal factory, and I'm 3 points short... I don't really want to play the game from the beginning again.
I know there was a different bug with this quest, but I just got the "complete all school quests" achievement after completing only 2 of them. I hadn't even started the decoration quest yet. Can give more info if needed.

I... think this might actually be due to the bug-fix from before. The third school quest was bugged for so many people that we just kind of kludged it by making the achievement pop after only 2 quests.

They don't have to be connecting, they have to be on the same line. All of the lines extend out from the slot in the bottom-center, and the slot in the bottom-center counts towards all lines. See how, in the top-right part of the Orbment screen, it shows the value of each element in each line? That's what determines what arts you have access to.
Well, I guess that means I gotta rethink my orb patterns...tough to find a good setup for Joshua since his time only orbs are in a weird configuration.
and man, the timeframe for some of these later quests are strict as all hell...but then there are no quests after that lol. I'm at the final chapter now, can't wait to finish the game this weekend.
Just reached chapter 1. Is there like a recommended level list to end each chapter in? I finished the prologue level 10. And jesus fuck that was a long prologue.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's practically impossible to grind for experience in this game. Once you start outleveling the monsters, your experience gain per kill goes way down. Just make sure you're not skipping too many fights.

Yeah, I've been running past most enemies until I notice I'm getting a ton of XP and then fighting some. The game has still been easy. I wouldn't worry about levels too much.
I really wish that combat gave a bit more control, such as which square to attack an enemy from. I know movement brings your turn up faster but I don't know by how much.
Some of the rare backtracking can be stupid - going up to the mine, seeing it locked, going back to the mayor, getting the key, going back. (unless I missed a trick and you can actually get the key if you talk to him again?). And so is the JRPG trope of defeating a villain only for them to do something outside battle and scarper.
The game is still really addictive though. Joshua is just tearing everything up.
About time to beat that boss. I wish I remembered what I did on the PSP version because I demolished him, granted that was in part due to the boss deciding to never heal. The setup in this guide looks like it should work decently enough though.
Unfortunately, it will have to wait until tomorrow...
Damn, like I said above the game now fully supports the 360 controller for me, didn't have to do anything, both the right stick and the d-pad are working like a charm.

Confirmed dpad and right-stick enabled on my end (PS3 controller + Mayflash adapter). Still need Xpadder for the triggers, though.
I noticed Right Stick camera moves faster when turning left than right, but that might just be me. Something to do with deadzones, I guess. Gonna look into it.
I apologize for not popping in for a bit! Got caught up with some things. I hope Trails is going well for the most part with everyone. It looks like Sara's d-pad fix is already known, so that's great. I'm currently working on the HD assets now, since they have to be done in English, but we have them! I hope I can finish the HD assets soon-ish so that we can implement them for everyone to see. I hope no one minds the wait.
Finished chapter 2, really loving this so far it's lived up to the hype people have given it.
Edit: This might be a minor spoiler so I guess spoiler tag it though it's a fairly simple question. I understand that like Grandia you have no real control over who's in your party as your party is dictated by the story. However in any of the games in this series (Trails in the sky) is there ever a point where you can freely pick your party members? Or are you always forced to have certain characters for the entire trilogy?

So I'm in the final dungeon with every single BP available to this point, turned in those chapters for Estelle's final weapon and I'm only missing the one newspaper issue that shows up during the ending. Good times.
Just had to look up how to do the last "Temp Librarian" quest in Chapter 3 - how the hell are you supposed to figure that one out? I understand that
3 FL Barrel means a barrel on the 3rd floor, but what are all the other upper-case letters for? Or are you just supposed to run around areas with 3rd floors looking for a barrel?
Not to upset about missing out on the achievement, and I know I can read it online, but it's the principle of the thing I was trying to get everything. I still have a save back from the end of chapter 1 which I assume it shows up at the book stand, but I really don't want to redo the past 4 hours of play to get back to Ruan.

This is practically impossible without a guide unless you talk to every NPC available every time the story inches forward. Even then, some issues are tough to find.
I suggest ignoring all completionist stuff on your first playthrough.
I'm 10 hours into the game, according to the average playtime I'm 1/5th of the way through, which is perfect as I want to finish this game asap since I have more stuff in my backlog. I've basically decided that whenever I find an area that gives me a decent amount of experience (at least 20 per battle) I'll grind out there until I'm gaining 9. Then it's skipping enemies because fuck battling enemies for only 9 per battle.
