The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is IGN's Game of the Show for E3 2016

Yep. Obviously.

Only game that comes close is NieR Automata.

OT: this is the first thing it came to my mind:

On topic: well deserved! Zelda and RE7 were the only two games that really interests me from this E3. There are other games like Horizon and Scalebound that are in "wait and see" approach right now. I though I was growing old for video games as this E3 was boring me until the very end. Too many violent games, scripted "adventures", guns and explosions...

Nintendo once again proving to the masses that they still got it! Super well desserved award. Zelda BoTW exceeded all of my expectations just by the time the first 30 minutes of Treehouse stream finished. The amount of stuff you can do, find and collect in this game is super exciting and holy shit, to think that we have only seen 2% of the whole game makes it 100000% more exciting. I have a feeling that this game is going to mark a new before and after on the history of gaming. Just like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time did back then. Even Reggie himself said that at the start of the Treehouse stream and I thought he was just showing off but maybe... maybe he could be right???

Well deserved. This, Horizon and God of War were my favorites of the show. Fantastic E3 where I really feel like there was something for everyone.

Just don't let him kick open a treasure chest without his shoes on

First time watching this hahaha I genuinely laughed! I loooooove this kind of details. That Nintendo touch <3

It's 2016. It's time to move on.

Whether a game has voice acting ot not has nothing to do with the year we live in. These are artistic choices and the less we have story exposition with spoken dialogue the better this series is for me. We have enough games that try to tell an epic story with cut-scenes and dialogue, hell many old IP's seem to go after this now. It's great that at least one classic game series keeps things simple.

That guys post was about NPCs having voices and not about cutscenes and story though, right?

Tbf, I love the voice acting at the start, and I love even more the fact that it's a British voice, but it was a bit meh to go from that to more NPC text with no voice acting. It just felt a bit like Nintendo cheaping out and stuff.

for me it was a tie between horizon zero dawn and zelda breath of the wild

good to see zelda win,

funny enough they both look pretty similar from the outside lol

man when these two games come out, there will be some serious ass vs discussions :3

can not wait

I totally agree!

Not much to explain. It's a meteorite. Whether it's a random event or part of a sidequest or whatever else is unknown. The clip is from the full day/night cycle on Nintendo's website.

Oh ok, I was confused if it was a meteorite or maybe link freezing and beating a rock or jewel or something until it blasted all the way over there.

Considering the size of this project, it's definitely not a decision driven by money lol. It's a design decision like I already said.

You think someone at Nintendo said: "I know! Let's have voice acting in cutscenes but NPCs will still have text and no voices! Yeah, that's a really great idea!"?

And how do you know it was a design decision? Did Aonuma tell you on the phone? And even if it were a design decision, it makes no sense.

I still can't get over the lack of voice acting for the NPC's.

Every time that old man appears and you have to read lengthy text it takes me right out of the moment. It doesn't fit and sticks out even more now considering they have some voice acting.

Yes, I know the game will have more voice acting, but they should have gone all in and not half ass it. It's extremely disappointing.

I disagree, I don't think short NPC dialog being voiceless as half assing it or immersion breaking. I see a lot of that stuff as unimportant and in some cases it can get repetitive when they're voiced. But then I'm thinking I'm just so used to partial voice acting in games, it just doesn't bother me. I've always hoped for voice acting in Zelda to resemble Dragon Quest VIII and it's definitely shaping up that way from the little we've heard.

Yeah it's 2016, the argument is tired out. It's time for people to stop acting like text without voice acting isn't a viable choice in games. Some people still enjoy reading over being spoon fed dialogue.
:P

"Spoon fed dialogue" because it's voiced? What the fuck are you on about?

That's great, but the game isn't just being made for you though is it. It was immersion breaking for me too.

thats what I thought too. Its a bit deceptive cause of the little "bounce" that's part of the animation for getting in the shield

It's not deceptive. He never touches the ground before activating the shield surfing. If he did he would have touched his shadow, but he was a few feet off the ground when he activated it.

Well it's a terrible 'design desision'. Skyward Sword proved that. They have absolutely no excuses not to include voice acting for NPC's, especially if they're already going to include some voice acting. It's such a buzz kill.

I agree with IGN. I had high expectations for this as I always have for Zelda but Nintendo completely blew me away with Breath of the wild. I havent't been this excited for a game since the first showing of Twilight Princess. And back then we didn't actually know much of the game, more than it looked cool. Bit this E3 showing with tons of gameplay has been nothing but a victory lap for Nintendo. The game just looks so fun, imaginative and epic in scope. The wait (for surely the prettier NX-version) is going to be unbearable.

well, to say that games need voice acting is like implying that listening to audio books is inherently superior to sitting down and having a read. There's room in the gaming medium for written dialogue, and games aren't inherently worse or antiquated for making the choice.

I know it's not really about being spoon fed the content (That is assuming that listening is lazier than reading) but I felt a bit like mocking those that insist its a necessary addition to games. Jokes.

While I love the female voice they've got, I don't mind a lack of voice acting for NPCs frankly, I think my head fills in the gaps perfectly fine as it always had. Voice acting is seen as a objective improvement over pure text, which is something I don't agree with entirely. Voices can inject their own personalities but text can very easily do the same if it's written well and thus invoke the "inner voice" of our heads. I don't really care unless it's bad either way. However, I don't see a reason for it to be bad as of yet.

I totally agree with you that not at all games need voiced dialogue and it doesn't make a game inherently worse, but right now BotW is like an audio book playing out and then also having to read parts of the book yourself. It's just inconsistent and weird. Felt immersion breaking for me too.

At the same time the singular use of voices could be seen as Ethereal thus differentiating it from other characters.

This just shows that there are different tastes in the world. I prefer the minimalistic approach and you don't. I would hate TLG having english voice acting as well.

I dont think you have played many open world especially japanese open world games, like xenoblade, cutscenes and important characters got voice acted, but most scenes were just text.

incase you dont get it, voice acting is fucking expensive, and not every line of dialogue needs to be voiced for some arbitrary reason like being "immersive" or whatever

True, that's an interesting way of looking at it. But I guarantee none would have any qualms about NPCs being voiced if they were. And since we have been given no official explanation on why NPCs are not voice, I'm just gonna have to chalk it up to Nintendo being cheap and saving money where possible.

"You haven't played many open world games obviously"

I've played enough. Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher 3, Xenoblade X.

The Witcher 3 and Red Dead? All dialogue was voiced, so why can't Zelda U's NPCs have voiced dialogue? I thought Zelda is supposed to be Nintendo's AAA title?

You cheat yourself intellectually if you believe that. This is probably the most expensive game nintendo has made. They wouldn't "save money" this way.

Then tell me what is the reason for giving voices in cutscenes but keeping NPC dialogue text based?

This new direction Nintendo are taking, letting younger developers and designers take over, gives me a warm feeling. It's already paying dividends, and I hope it results in success for the NX.

Uhhh Xenoblade X was NOT fully voiced (oh, did you edit your post? I swear you listed Xenoblade X as being fully voiced). Speaking of which though, if there are sidequests involving helping out people and triggering small cutscenes, I hope THOSE are voiced. I found it quite odd that in X, you do these big sidequest missions that are presented just like the story cutscenes, but aren't voiced at all. THAT came across as lazy to me.

Bouncing enemy attacks goes all the way back to Link to the Past in SNES. Waiting for attacks to counterattack is all what OoT is about.

Not sure if this is what is amazing about the clip. It's that we know this attack is strong enough to kill link when hit by it direct and I'm sure this parry won't work with just every shield setup... We know that the equipment in this games has a durability scale so you obviously have to be prepared before trying something like this or your shield might just break.

Then tell me what is the reason for giving voices in cutscenes but keeping NPC dialogue text based?

Importance of cut-scene character dialogue against in-game, the pacing in the gameplay, the feel of mystery when characters speak in made up languages. I can't be sure what was the main reason for the developers until they say it themselves, but I do know it wasn't about money.

Persona 5, NieR Automata, Horizon and Zelda all in Q1 2017 is crazy.

And Mass Effect Andromeda.... guys?!

You cheat yourself intellectually if you believe that. This is probably the most expensive game nintendo has made. They wouldn't "save money" this way.

Lol... it's the most expensive game they've made, you bet your damn they want to save money where they can. They don't have a blank cheque here...

I don't know about you, but I know people are just gonna speed through that text faster than any voice acting can catch up with.

Games have dealt with this for a while now, voice acting, and you press a button to move on to the next dialogue if you finish reading sooner. Works perfectly in Mass Effect (and countless other games)

This game has blown everything away. I haven't been excited like this for a game in sooooo long. Fuck I need it.

These gifs always get me. Always gotta have a new gif in a Zelda thread that surprises me.

seriously, the variety offered in the game is INCREDIBLE
