The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Thanks. Sounds like those will be the first games I get.

Now speaking of scoring and Deathsmiles, I am very confused.

I understand the basics. Gold crowns are worth 10 (I think), silver crowns worth 5 and skull rings are worth 1. When in powerup mode, enemies start dropping gold crowns (and it's dependent on what type of shot you use to kill them. I pretty much understand what shot is best for what enemy), but it gets confusing when in regular mode or powerup mode.

In regular mode, I am to understand that it is best to try and collect the gold crowns. But in powerup mode, I see the pros going for the skull rings. Why is this so? Also, I noticed that I am only able to max out the score multiplier if I go for the skull rings (in powerup mode). In regular mode, I can never max out the counter whether I go for gold crowns or skulls...

In power up mode, all items have equal value. Meaning a gold crown is worth the same as a skull. So it's more beneficial to let the crowns fall and break into multiple skulls, as that will increase your counter faster.

It's just very confusing. Also, I noticed a little trick that the pro players use. Take the first stage for instance. I noticed that they are somehow able to get 25 worth of silver crowns out of the pig enemies, whereas no matter what I try I can only get 5 worth out of them. How are they doing this? Is it a glitch? So, yeah, any help trying to explain this scoring system would be much appreciated.

They're most likely killing the pig butchers with the lock shot, since that will give them white crowns (which are worth 5 each). If you kill them with a laser or regular shot, you'll only get skulls I believe.

And to add to the recommendations, I'd suggest Ketsui, Mushihime Futari, Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou Black Label, and Muchi Muchi Pork. Those all seem to be in line with what you want (by varying degrees). And they all have fun scoring systems to boot (that includes DOJ BL).

Bah, still not up at NCS. Maybe in the next day or so.
Really wish Akai was region free. Hopefully XSeed, Aksys or Atlus picks this up for the US. But I'm not holding my breath.

I love hori, bullet hell, shmups. =(

Chances are good, I think. Cave has been in talks with US publishers on their upcoming titles, which is why they made Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweet region-free (probably nobody wanted to touch it) and probably the reason why Akai Katana is (there is an interest in a US release).

I think I'll order it anyway for the OST. Gonna get a JPN 360 later this year anyway.

Yeah, I'm sure Akai is a way easier sell to pubs because due to the 16:9. Then again, DSII never got localized, so who knows.

Help! I can't make up my mind if I want collectors edition or regular. I'm talking about on all the Cave titles. Right now most games are 80 standard, and anywhere from 130-199 CE. I just can't decide what I want to do. I want a proper collection, but idk with these prices, it's very hard to decide :/

CEs are only worth it for the Arranged OSTs, if you don't care, just get regular.

I get the CEs even if I never listen to the arrange OSTs. orz Something makes me not want the regular editions for some reason.

Yeah,

I just buy the CEs for the prettier boxes. OSTs get shelved. Did not even open the Daifukkatsu soundtrack yet. Did put Pink Sweets music on my PS3. Pretty cool.

Lik,

Get a J -360. Peanuts compared to what you spend every month on games!

DSII only came out last year, with DSI releasing in summer. Still a reasonable chance.

I was thinking it would be easier to sell because it's spaceships and not anime girls that threaten Western's gamers already lacking masculinity.

It is also horizontal. Horizontal shooters have always been way more popular in the west than vertical.

Thx for the heads up! Preordered the regular edition. I always get the normal ones, much cheaper :) Only one I kinda regret is Daifukkatsu 1.5 since the LE boxart is much better.

NCSX is a bit expensive btw, but they always deliver. My favorite import shop for jp games.
They pack exceptionally well, too.

NCSX is a bit pricier but they are the only one who can actually send to my tricky address...so I kinda have to go with them.

Still holding out hope for a Akai Katana arcade stick from Hori...something which would look very pretty since the art is totally cool. Crossing fingers since it will have been a year since the DSII stick shipped.

Yeah it's been awhile since a new cave stick came out.
Although, shouldn't it be announced by now? And what kind of base is hori going to use? The usual hrap? Would look good with the rest of the cave themed sticks.

Btw YesBoss, out of curiosity, what kind of arcade cabs do you have?

It would hopefully be the new base with SE parts. Really dying to get a licensed shooter stick in the new form into my collection. They might be done with those, though. Just got the vanilla seimitsu stick for Ressurection and a vanilla seimtsu stick for Mamoru-kun at the end of this month for PS3 :-(

My cabinets are an Egret 3 which I use for my atomiswave and Dreamcast, a New Astro City which handles my PS2 stuff and PCBs. Both of those are in great condition. I also have a small old metal Neo Candy which is totally cool cause it has a easy rotating monitor like an Egret 2. It is kinda rare and unique but in rough shape...still my favotite of my three and I use it for my Ibaras. Also have a stand alone Nieman trisync arcade monitor which is just totally fun to hook a saturn up to. All in storage for a few years till I move back to the US. Definitley going to pick up a cabinet or two in europe while I'm her since a lot of neat ones come up for sale. Will do that in 2012 since I'm heading to the middle east for a year in late summer.

Do you guys think copies of MMP with the DLC card will run out soon? Or are they already run out?

I've haven't been in the place to spend $80 on a game recently but my situation seems to be improving so I figure I should ask now. If nothing else I suppose I'll spring for the LE which is guaranteed to have the card.

NCSX put up the preorder for platinum Espgaluda II. They are listing it as region-free. Such a beautiful fun game for cheaper. They have it listed for $40 and a 28 April release date:

Awesome stuff, since i just recently bought the mushihime-sama futari platinum version for $40. Here's hoping this isn't region-locked by some chance.>_>

I absolutely LOVE Deathsmiles, and I'm totally looking forward to Akai Katana. I really wish Cave would make more side scrollers to maximize all that space the screen.

So, I'm in Japan at the moment.

Which Cave shooters for 360 are region free?

Espgaluda II Black Label (only the standard version, Limited Ed is region locked), Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets (this one is pretty recent, both versions) and Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 (all versions, standard, limited and greatest hits).

Ah, that's good to hear. I just bought the Deluxe Edition this Friday past, thinking it would be a good investment.

Now, all I need is a 360 to play it on...:p

Not actually that important
Hell yeah, I just noticed I had the Death Smiles Deluxe Edition soundtrack replacement in my mailbox, awesome customer's care from Rising Star Games! :))

Yup, I've got most of the Cave releases on 360, except for Ketsui, and by far Deathsmiles is my favourite.
Deathsmiles 2 has smoother scoring system, but the graphics really holds the game back.
Mushihime's art style and music is amazing, but the game is way too hard for me.
Espgaluda 2's scoring system is way too complex, but it has the most game modes, so if you like complexity it has the most value for money.
Dodonpachi: DOJ does not have high res graphics and it really was quite a mess when it first launched. I haven't played it since they patched it, but back then it was all I had and I played the crap out of it.
Dodonpachi: DFT also has epic difficulty.
Muchimuchipork: It's sitting on my shelf, haven't had the time to play it yet. =(

Quick question:

I'm thinking about importing Mushihime-sama Futari and maybe Espgaluda II.

But first on Mushihime-sama Futari. I know it's region-free but is this installable on the U.S. 360 hard drive?

Of course it is!

Ah crap, the Espgaluda II Black Label Platinum Edition isn't region-free, only the first print was. :(

Ah well. I don't think I could've spent $80 anyway. At least Mushihime-sama Futari's Platinum is cheap and region-free!

How certain are we that it's not region-free? Surely they wouldn't just repackage the pressing used for the LE versions for the PH version... would they?

I found a old 1up article that Cave said the normal version will be their last region-free game. Even the platinum or black label editions will be locked to Japan only.

On Play-Asia, the region-free one is out of stock. The platinum black label edition is coming out soon, but it doesn't mention anything about it being region free.

That was an old interview. Cave didn't want to make region free games anymore because they wanted to license their games to western publishers. But since Espgaluda 2 is already region free, there would be no point in making the platinum version region locked. Play Asia doesn't list it as region free because the game isn't out yet, just wait for release date and check again.

All versions of ESPGaluda II are the Black Label version, though, so there's not a difference in content. I think in the end we at least need to wait until it's been released to find out if it's region-free or not. I sincerely hope it is because for $35 I'll bite.

So I've been playing Ketsui over the last week or so, trying to improve my scores & 1-ALL the game, and well, I finally cleared the first loop with Type A. Got a 103m final score, so I'm pretty satisfied with that for now since I've mainly been playing for survival.

What an amazing game. Without question my favorite shooter of all time, and one of my favorite games of all time too. The game's just borderline perfect imo.

Now I guess I'll start working on the tsuujou loop... lol.

Congrats. Ketsui is fucking hard.
