The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Hmm, of course it's not impossible that the analog is broken, but I doubt it. At least I haven't had any problems in other games. And it isn't really keeping moving left (or right), it just takes an extra step into a wrong direction after moving the stick constantly in different directions for a couple of seconds. I'll try it with my second controller over the weekend. Luckily it's nothing really serious that affects gameplay too much. It just makes me feel a little bit uneasy, when I know that I could manage my way through the bullets, but can't trust the controls completely.

could be input lag, but I'm not too sure. it really isn't necessary, but I try to play all twitch-gameplay based/intensive games on a 19 inch NEC CRT monitor to avoid any input lag issues... but the input lag shouldn't be nearly as bad as what you're experiencing.

Did anybody get a chance to try the HD versions of Espgaluda II or DDP Resurrection on the new iPad (3 lol)? I'm thinking of finally kicking my OG iPad to the curb.

Just had a quick credit of both. They look fine though they're just pixel doubled from iPad 2 resolution.

The crontrols seem a bit unreliable though. Especially when I try to steer through some heavier bullet patterns, dodging quickly back and forth, the character makes forced moves to the side, usually left. Is this really intended?

If your character keeps moving to the left maybe your left analog is broken. In arcade mode when the shikigami is out you can only move your character left and right, but in 360 arrange you should be able to move freely (unless something is blocking you).

From what I remember, the dead zone on the analog stick is really, really small in Guwange. Your analog stick might not be *perfectly* centered, and while most other games have a large enough dead zone to correct this, Guwange doesn't for some reason.

I played Guwange with my other controller and had no problems this time. So maybe the stick is a bit loose and is noticable only in this game for the reason To Far Away Times mentioned. Thank you all for helping me with my problem. Much easier to enjoy Guwange now.

NCSX tax. Play-Asia will probably offer it for at least $10 less, which is ultimately lost on shipping charges.

the funny thing that I just noticed is that, the limited edition on P-A is actually priced $10 ($139.90) more than NCSX ($128.90). Not to mention P-A's shipping costs. seems like it's the other way around, no?

It's been a while since we've done a ranking of Cave games, and I think it would be a good idea to rank the difficulty of all the 1 loop games. I have no idea where some games like Deathsmiles 2 and Espgaluda II BL would fit in. Daioujou WL and Ketsui are considered to be the hardest right?

From what I'm familiar with:

Hard
Mushi Futari 1.5 Original
DoDonPachi

Mushihimesama Original
Donpachi
Espgaluda
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu
Mushi Futari Black Label
Deathsmiles Mega Black Label
Deathsmiles
Easy

I haven't played all of these games to 1CC so I definitely can't say with certainty, but I have at least played all of them.

Hard
(Fuck-crazy hard tier)
Mushi Futari 1.5 Ultra
Pink Sweets (no infinite lives trick)
Mushi Futari Black Label God
Espgaluda II
Ibara
Mushihimesama Ultra
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (Resurrection) Black Label (Strong)

(Possible tier)
Dodonpachi Daioujou (Blissful death)
Guwange
Muchi-Muchi Pork
Mushi Futari 1.5 Maniac
Progear
Ketsui
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (Resurrection) Black Label (Power, Bomb)
Mushi Futari Black Label Maniac
Mushihimesama Maniac

(Takes dedication but you can do it tier)
Mushi Futari 1.5 Original
DoDonPachi
Esp Ra. De.
Mushihimesama Original
Donpachi
Espgaluda

(Accessible, recommended for beginners tier)
Akai Katana Shin
Mushi Futari Black Label Original
Deathsmiles Mega Black Label
Akai Katana
Deathsmiles
Deathsmiles IIX
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu
Easy

Not sure where Dodonpachi Maximum and Dangun Feveron would rate.

If you're going to split up DFK's modes, you really should split Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles MBL's modes as well. I can definitely get a lot further into Deathsmiles Lv1 than I can through any mode of DFK.

I'm not completely sure about the general consensus, but I remember Feveron being hard as hell, then again thinking about it I can't say I've ever really tried to survive to get a 1CC. I always played with Uo-Poko cause I could score the best with it, and to score well you kind of have to play suicidally.

No clue about DDP Maximum but there was an interview about it with a prototype shot of it I haven't seen yet:
http://www.wpcentral.com/xbox-live-developer-interview-cave-makers-dodonpachi-maximum

Out of what I'm familiar with, I'd probably rank them like this:

Futari 1.5 Ultra
Dodonpachi Daioujou (2-loops)
Ketsui (Ura loop)
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label (2-loops)
Ketsui (Tsuujou loop)
Espgaluda II
Futari BL God Mode
Futari 1.5 Maniac
Ketsui (1-loop)
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label (1-loop)
Futari BL Maniac
Espgaluda II Black Label
Futari 1.5 Original
Akai Katana Shin
Akai Katana Zetsu
Muchi Muchi Pork (1-loop)
Akai Katana
Death Smiles II X (rank 3 + EX)
Death Smiles II
Death Smiles (mixed rank)
Futari BL Original

I'm not too sure where to put AKS, because that game is really hard when played for score, but I think it'd be fairly easy if you're going solely for survival. Not sure. (Same can be said for Futari BL Original)

Futari God Mode also looks really hard, but I think it's only a tiny bit harder than 1.5 Maniac. The buffed firepower for both Reco and Palm make a pretty big difference.

I think AK/S/Z is perfect where you have it. For survival, it definitely took me less time to 1CC AK than it did Futari 1.5 Original, but I'd almost want to say that MMP 1 loop is more difficult than Futari 1.5 Original.

I think the bullet patterns in Pork are a lot harder than Futari Original (for the most part), but getting an extend every 10 million helps a lot to lower the difficulty. Plus, the stages get a lot easier once you realize you can use bomb fragments for brief moments of invincibility.

Deathsmiles IIX harder than Deathsmiles II arcade, iconoclast? That seems really weird to me.

I should've specified all stages at rank 3 + EX, whoops. It's been a while since I've played X-mode, but I thought it was a little tougher than arcade. Not a big difference between them though.

I'm still baffled by their portable releases, I really don't find playing their shooters comfortable on the small screen

The precision is amazing. Really one of the few genres which can be ported successfully and they've done a top job.

Technically, the Cave games feel better than other shooters on iOS because they're ported with the interface in mind. The ship travels faster than they are capable of doing in the original arcade versions so they match your finger movements. It's cheating, more or less.

quick question for Cave-GAF: I have a US 360, and deathsmiles and deathsmiles IIX, as well as a couple of the XBLA shmups available, and wanted to know what other options I had for more cave goodness without digging in for a JPN 360. I understand that apparently DDP DFK is region free if you get the PAL version, are there any others I can import region free?

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Mushihimesama Futari is awesome and region free. That's the one you should get now. Espgaluda II is also quite good (but hard as shit). That is your other region free option.

There's also the Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork two pack, which people seem to like. I haven't played it, myself, however.

DFK PAL is not region-free but it is unlocked for US 360s, so that is indeed an option for you. The only region free options are Mushihimesama Futari 1.5, Espgaluda II Black Label (standard/platinum hits editions only), and Muchi Muchi Pork + Pink Sweets.

Right now we're awaiting a release date for Akai Katana Shin, which RSG will be releasing in the US as well.

awesome, thanks for all the prompt responses! I'll be picking up Guwange in the near future, and DFK PAL when I have money, then Mushihimesama Futari. I'm still like, a D-Class shmup player, so I don't know that I'm ready to handle something like Espgaluda 2 then. :D

Hey, is there anything on the recent Platinum re-releases of Espgaluda II and Mushi Futari 1.5 that isn't on disk for the original releases of those games? I have yet to open my copies of these 2 games' original releases, was wondering if I'd be better off with the re-releases.

Some of the original copies of Mushi Futari have exclusive 1.01 DLC codes.
First run of Espgaluda 2 include a soundtrack CD.

To answer your question, no. In fact, per the post above, the opposite is true.

All right, that's nice to know. It also seems the Espgaluda II platinum release is out of print already, too. So, doubly so.

How's the music in Espgaluda II? The music in the first one was one of the games biggest strengths, IMO. Hope #2 is in a similar vein.

I came to post about that interview in May 2012 Famitsu 360 and I am not sure I agree with the translation above...he says in earlier answer that of course they will continue to work on shooting games, but the last part he is just talking about doing something pretty large scale that they haven't done before, and apologizes it is not going to be for 360..he said it is secret and just getting a solid plan now . in a diff part of the interview they hint that next series to get a sequel is likely to be Deathsmiles...
