Ya know, there was a time where I would have been thrilled with this news. Now? I'll be extremely cautiously optimistic. Maybe it will be amazing ... ? Right?

:/

Well, I'm gonna be skeptical until I actually hear it. Iommi and Geezer have proven that they can still unleash hellishly heavy riffs very recently, but Ozzy's voice is... well... yeah.

And despite my unabashed man love for Dio, I do enjoy the first 6 Ozzy albums (with SBS being a personal favorite), so I'm not waving my fanboy flag. I just can't stand Ozzy's voice.

where can i find info on getting Manowar tickets? I'm in Chicago but I really want to try to head to NJ for the show!!!

I bought mine! :) Ticketmaster should still have 'em but prepare to pay out the ass. The total for me with service charges came to 93 dollars. It's worth it, though.

That's what gives me the greatest amount of apprehension.

Sabbath w/Ozzy and Sabbath w/Dio are two completely different beasts and I dig both quite a bit for different reasons. I would say that that I favor the Ozzy era more since I was exposed to it first.

but the real mastermind here is Iommi. the early riffs makes up for ozzy's terrible voice.
I saw him in Heaven and Hell, and he is still godlike.

Well, I saw Ozzy a week ago and his voice didn't hurt my ears. He's far away from his past days but together with the others it could work. ;D I don't believe this news till I see more sources, though.

For me, it's half and half. Iommi's riffs and the vocal melodies Ozzy came up with. Both are very important to a magic Sabbath album to me. Even as weak as Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! are, there are some great songs between them both due in large part to Ozzy's melodies and delivery such as 2nd half of Johnny Blade, Junior's Eyes, Shockwave, Air Dance, You Won't Change Me, and She's Gone.

Iommi cannot be denied even 40+ years later, the Ozzy part however ... I don't know how capable he is of fulfilling his role unless they can get a producer to whip him into shape.

That autotune crap from Scream just will not fly with Sabbath. If that is all he is capable of nowadays, then I fear for this new album. Quick, someone hire Martin Birch!

Ugh, hopefully the words "Kevin" and "Churko" don't come up in their discussions about who they want to produce the album or mix or engineer >_>

And yes, Martin Birch should come out of retirement for them :p

Throne of Ahaz - Nifelheim
Great black metal from sweden. Sounds a bit similiar to Darkthrone's A blaze in the northern sky. Lots of first wave bm influences.

fuck yes for Throne of Ahaz. fun stuff.

Went to Power of the Riff last night in San Francisco. Noothgrush fucking killed. Winter was bonecrushing, sounded almost exactly like the album, but heavier live.

Chiyo is one of the funnest persons to watch drum. Small japanese girl that smiles a lot, but destroys the drumset.

Noothgrush AND Winter? Good god I wish I could have been there.

Both are scheduled to play Maryland Deathfest next year as well
The line up for MDF is absolutely insane.
I got excited when I saw Nausea there, thinking they were the crust punk band but they were from NY so I guess that's the LA grindcore band, who are pretty good too.

Not only were Noothgrush and Winter playing, Dino from Dystopia/Phobia was there in attendance :p

EDIT: Holy shit, I just saw the lineup for MDF 2012.

highlights for me:
Godflesh
Autopsy
Saint Vitus
Artillery
Morgoth
Confessor
Winter
Demigod
Desaster
Hellbastard
Noothgrush

Looks like every year a lot of the older bands are on the bill. I'm stoked that Godflesh will be finally playing a U.S. date. This gives me hope that they will come out to the west coast at some point.

Soul Sacrifice!

That is the first CD I bought by them. Found it at one of those large indoor flea markets. I had heard FoE but, didn't do much for me though there were a few bits that stood out. Anyway, I stumbled across the new (at the time) EP and it was $5 I think. I figured, what the hell, can't go wrong for $5 :p To this day, it's probably my favorite release from them. Great great EP.

Yes yes yes

Spiritualized D is one of the best stoner doom albums ever.

So in other news, Rhapsody of Fire just... splitted?

After 15 years of friendship, hard work and big passion, fully invested in the creation of symphonic music and an epic saga that will remain in the history of heavy metal, Alex Staropoli and Luca Turilli decided to proceed to a friendly split.
“10 albums released and the end of the saga represent, musically and lyrically, an important artistic goal finally reached, underlined by the success of our last release “From Chaos To Eternity”, for which we want to thank our wonderful fans once again. Now it came the time when new artistic stimulations need to be found, in respect of both parts’ visions and perspectives and of our longtime friendship” say Luca and Alex. Due to the latest legal agreements actually in force, Alex Staropoli will go on with RHAPSODY OF FIRE having, between the others, Fabio Lione as singer, Tom Hess as guitar player and Alex Holzwarth as drummer. For the same agreements and the original name’s common ownership, Luca Turilli will release his future works with a new RHAPSODY band, including the faithful band members Dominique Leurquin, Patrice Guers and Alex Holzwarth.

Alex says: “While wishing the best to Luca and his new band, I want to tell you that Fabio and myself feel motivated and stronger than ever and that RHAPSODY OF FIRE are already planning a great worldwide tour. More information regarding the new bass player and the new second guitar player will follow. Stay tuned!”

I definitely did not see this coming.

Wonder if they'll play anything off Canterbury. I used to love that album, but I guess most fans didn't.
Anyway, DH without Harris singing isn't very appealing.

Whoa. I heard that he hurt his arm and couldn't play drums anymore and that's why Dystopia stopped, but according to ghouls website they are recording a new album and going on a tour with GWAR. Dino = Fermentor unless they got a new drummer. Hopefully his arm has healed properly and we can get a new Dystopia record at some point cause the ST was great.

It warms my heart to see this thread take a turn to doom/stoner goodness

I'm currently listening to Wooden Stake's Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenades. Kinda like a mix of Electric Wizard and early My Dying Bride but with female vocals.

Doomtacular.

Glad that everyone seems to love it. The world needs more awesome underground Doom acts. Actually, could anyone recommend me more bands like the one I posted? Preferably with the option of buying lossless copies of the albums online.

Hooded Menace. It's more death/doom with a Stockholm sounding production. Very old school sounding though.

Hooded Menace - Never Cross The Dead
Hooded Menace - Fullfill The Curse

Just listened to Stormwarrior's latest...

I hate this expression, but "meh" would be my first impression. I really liked their previous album too. I'll give it a few more listens though.

Here's some doom, sludge, stoner whatever bands. Might not be exactly what you asked for but I hope something sticks!

Thorr's Hammer
Female fronted death/doom. This was the first thing I thought of when I heard Wooden Stake.

You've probably heard of Corrupted but just incase you haven't you can read my post about them

Plaguebearer
These guys only have a demo out right now. They describe themselves as Iron Monkey + Dystopia so they might not be exactly what you're looking for.

The Mighty Nimbus
More death/doomy but leaning more to the doom side.

Abysmal Grief
Keyboard heavy kind of gothy doom.

Unholy
Death/doom

Graves At Sea
A more bluesy Burning Witch.

Mourn
Trad doom with a female vocalist.

Buried At Sea
Drone doom.

Wounded Kings
Trad doom.

Asunder
Funeral doom.

Agrimonia
Not sure if they fit here since they are mostly associated with "crustcore" but they are fucking great and have long atmospheric songs and a female vocalist.

Runemagick
Death/doom.

Hopefully someone else can recommend you something that fits better.

Sure its not as good as the late work but damn this is some sick shit. So fucking awesome.

When I used to do radio I based my show theme and DJ name off of early Carcass.

Just a small snippet of Carcass stuff that I have.
I'm a huge fan of Symphonies of Sickness, not so much of Reek of Putrefaction.
If you like early Carcass, the first General Surgery album, Xysma, Pathologist, and The County Medical Examiners are blatant copies.

I do. Reek of Putrefaction is their best album, followed by Symphonies of Sickness, I don't really care about the rest at all.

One of my friends is the biggest Carcass fan I'll ever know, she's pretty darn cool! I'm not a huge Carcass fan, my favourite album of theirs is Swansong, so what does that tell you?

Love when I go on a new hunt and discover a few new bands. I've just discovered Revocation. Their album 'Chaos of Forms' absolutely slays!

I've mentioned this band before, but the Carcass discussion made me want to bring them up again. If you like Carcass, check out Climatic Terra. I've described them before as saying they sound like what would happen if Arch Enemy went ahead and decided to say "fuck it, let's make an album that sounds like Carcass".

That sounds great. I skipped over it the first time because I thought it was the Danish crust band Nuclear Death Terror (who are fucking awesome).

Here's an old live clip from 1990: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xvb3tCfXvDo

They also had marvellously twisted lyrics:
Distended belly, forlorn eyes
coarse hair covers his body
he has his mother's greenflies

He is infected, beyond help
a pig wrapped tight in human skin
he has his mother's greenflies

A human becomes a pig at birth
when the mother fails to bathe it
and the piglet rolls in dirt
and eats feces and drinks urine
because mother's milk is sour...
and the pig grows and grows and grows

and gives blood to fleas
and he smells repulsive
and he laughs at the empty lies which are his life
his laugh a wounded dogs cry
and he has his mother's greenflies...

And a couple of "newer" songs from the early 90's...
